Development Of Biomechanical Analysis Techniques For Fatigue Of Transtibial Prosthetic Socket And Pylon Interactions, Thomas Z. Sudbury May 2014

Development Of Biomechanical Analysis Techniques For Fatigue Of Transtibial Prosthetic Socket And Pylon Interactions, Thomas Z. Sudbury

Honors Theses

The lack of formal, engineering based information is prevalent in the prosthetic industry. Currently, very few prosthetic manufacturing companies can definitively tell their patients how long their products will last. Because of this lack of information, many amputee patients will experience failure of their transtibial prosthetic device during daily activities. One such failure occurs from the fatigue of everyday use. Fatigue failures originate from the repeated application of certain loading conditions. These repeated loads usually occur for millions of cycles before a transtibial prosthetic catastrophically fails. The purpose of this study is to develop a testing procedure and apparatus that …

Supply Chain Flexibility In The Special Purpose Vehicle Industry., Florian J. Loderbauer 1982- May 2014

Supply Chain Flexibility In The Special Purpose Vehicle Industry., Florian J. Loderbauer 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Supply chains of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) industry are complex and with many constraints. Since the SPV industry is a special field of operation, there is no classical supply chain strategy which is appropriate. It is possible to apply concepts of industries with similar requirements but there is a high loss of time and money because these classical concepts do not fit to the SPV industry. Even strategies of the conventional automobile industry cannot be transferred. Therefore, there is the need to develop a supply chain concept for companies of the SPV industry. As a first step, basic knowledge …

A Mathematical Programming Approach For Dispatching And Relocating Ems Vehicles., Farshad Majzoubi 1983- May 2014

A Mathematical Programming Approach For Dispatching And Relocating Ems Vehicles., Farshad Majzoubi 1983-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We consider the problem of dispatching and relocating EMS vehicles during a pandemic outbreak. In such a situation, the demand for EMS vehicles increases and in order to better utilize their capacity, the idea of serving more than one patient by an ambulance is introduced. Vehicles transporting high priority patients cannot serve any other patient, but those transporting low priority patients are allowed to be rerouted to serve a second patient. We have considered three separate problems in this research. In the first problem, an integrated model is developed for dispatching and relocating EMS vehicles, where dispatchers determine hospitals for …

Low Power Strain Sensor Based On Mos Tunneling Current., Li Zhu May 2014

Low Power Strain Sensor Based On Mos Tunneling Current., Li Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensors, such as pressure sensors, accelerometers and gyroscopes, are very important components in modern portable electronics. A limited source of power in portable electronics is motivating research on new low power sensors. Piezoresistive and capacitive sensing technologies are the most commonly utilized technologies, which typically consume power in the µW to mW range. Tunneling current sensing is attractive for low power applications because the typical tunneling current is in the nA range. This dissertation demonstrates a low power strain sensor based on the tunneling current in a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure with a power consumption of a couple of nano-Watts (nW) …

An Ecohydrological Perspective On Drought-Induced Forest Mortality, Anthony J. Parolari, Gabriel Katul, Amilcare Porporato May 2014

An Ecohydrological Perspective On Drought-Induced Forest Mortality, Anthony J. Parolari, Gabriel Katul, Amilcare Porporato

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Regional‐scale drought‐induced forest mortality events are projected to become more frequent under future climates due to changes in rainfall patterns. The occurrence of these mortality events is driven by exogenous factors such as frequency and severity of drought and endogenous factors such as tree water and carbon use strategies. To explore the link between these exogenous and endogenous factors underlying forest mortality, a stochastic ecohydrological framework that accounts for random arrival and length of droughts as well as responses of tree water and carbon balance to soil water deficit is proposed. The main dynamics of this system are characterized with …

Implementation Of Prediction Algorithms To Reduce Latency In Control Of Switching Converters, Brent Bell May 2014

Implementation Of Prediction Algorithms To Reduce Latency In Control Of Switching Converters, Brent Bell

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using pulse-width modulation (PWM) to control switching converters such as a dual active bridge introduces latency into a system [1]. Latency in a switching converter decreases the effective bandwidth that the converter can be switched at and for the case of a closed loop control system decreases the effective closed loop system stability. This delay can be attributed to sampling of the control signal and calculation time for the PWM. If a prediction scheme is implemented in this calculation, the next switching time could be predicted to remove any latency. There are effectively two steps in order to achieve this …

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin May 2014

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has a "hydrological" cycle with hydrocarbons including methane and ethane in its atmosphere, and may be analogous to a frozen prebiotic Earth. Tholins created in Titan's atmosphere fall to the surface and interact with these liquid hydrocarbons. As a surrogate for tholins, nanophase silica was used as the nanosediment that interacts with the chosen liquids used to be analogous to those found on Titan. The effect on the evaporation rate of these liquids with and without the added silica was explored through 10 experiments.

Experimental And Simulation Studies Of The Permeation Of Water Through Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms), Dilawer Singh May 2014

Experimental And Simulation Studies Of The Permeation Of Water Through Polydimethylsiloxane (Pdms), Dilawer Singh

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Experimental and computational techniques were used to test the permeation of water through polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The experimental portion consisted of creating a permeation cell in such a way that water’s only path to escape was through a PDMS membrane. Weight measurements were recorded and turned into a permeation coefficient of water through different types of PDMS. The membranes were then stretched to a certain amount to study the effect on water permeation. The computational part used Large-scale Atomic / Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) to study the diffusion coefficient of water through PDMS. The initial step was to translate coarse-grain …

Estimating Unsaturated Flow Properties In Coarse Conglomeratic Sediment, Michael James Thoma Jr. May 2014

Estimating Unsaturated Flow Properties In Coarse Conglomeratic Sediment, Michael James Thoma Jr.

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I address the lack of knowledge of unsaturated flow in coarse, conglomeratic sediment by determining if functional θ-ψ-K relationships, specifically van Genuchten-Mualem (VGM) relationships, developed to predict unsaturated flow in relatively fine-grained sediment can be directly applied to coarse, conglomeratic sediment. In the summer of 2011, a field-scale infiltration test was conducted at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site to determine if functional ψ-θ-K relationships could be applied to infiltration in coarse, conglomeratic sediment, and to estimate parameter values for the VGM relationships. Vertically and laterally distributed ψ(t) and θ( …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Gait Kinetics Resulting From Use Of A Vacuum Socket On A Transtibial Prosthesis, Maria De Lourdes Ramos Gonzalez May 2014

Biomechanical Analysis Of Gait Kinetics Resulting From Use Of A Vacuum Socket On A Transtibial Prosthesis, Maria De Lourdes Ramos Gonzalez

Honors College Theses

The technology and design of lower limb prosthetics have evolved greatly since their introduction. The current study proposed to compare the effects of a conventional pin socket attachment and a vacuum socket attachment for a transtibial amputee. Whereas traditional measurements of gait utilize force plates and camera systems, this study made use of a small tri-axial load cell located at the base of the socket to measure the forces and moments exerted during a regular gait cycle. The hypothesis tested stated that a vacuum pump socket attachment, when compared to a non-vacuum (pin) socket, will have a significant effect on …

Development Of An Application For Patient-Centered Dementia Care., David Collar Alston May 2014

Development Of An Application For Patient-Centered Dementia Care., David Collar Alston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dementia care in the United States faces several challenges, many of them associated with managing the information that is associated with patients. Protected patient information about patients is often separated between many sources. For example, a new doctor may have information on patient medicines, but not the document associated with the caregiving goals of the patient and their family. Problems can develop if a patient is treated by a new caregiver, who may not know the patient’s treatment and behavior history. There is a strong desire for a system that can collect, organize, and analyze patient information in a user …

Optimizing Polymer Fluorescence For Explosives Detection, Rose K. Cersonsky May 2014

Optimizing Polymer Fluorescence For Explosives Detection, Rose K. Cersonsky

Honors Scholar Theses

Pyrene is commonly used for explosives detection, as when mixed with polystyrene, the fluorescence intensity of the resulting film can be used as an indicator of the presence of nitro-aromatic, nitro-ether, or nitro-amine explosives. Previous studieshave tested a three-component system including pyrene, polystyrene, and a salt, tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAHP). From these previous studies, it has been seen that vapor pressure of the preparation area is a governing factor in the formation of excimers, which are instrumental in achieving and maintaining fluorescence intensity. In this study, three parameters – solution concentration, film thickness, and molecular weight of polystyrene are examined to …

Modeling The Adaptive Immune Response To Mutation-Generated Antigens, Rory J. Geyer May 2014

Modeling The Adaptive Immune Response To Mutation-Generated Antigens, Rory J. Geyer

Honors Scholar Theses

Somatic mutations may drive tumorigenesis or lead to new, immunogenic epitopes (neoantigens). The immune system is thought to represses neoplastic growths through the recognition of neoantigens presented only by tumor cells. To study mutations as well as the immune response to mutation-generated antigens, we have created a conditional knockin mouse line with a gene encoding, 5’ to 3’, yellow fluorescent protein (YFP), ovalbumin (which is processed to the immunologically recognizable peptide, SIINFEKL), and cyan fluorescent protein (CFP), or, YFP-ovalbumin-CFP. A frame shift mutation has been created at the 5’ end of the ovalbumin gene, hence YFP should always be expressed, …

A Novel, Tag-Based File-System, Aaron Laursen May 2014

A Novel, Tag-Based File-System, Aaron Laursen

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

For decades, computer use has largely focused on managing and manipulating files-- creating and consuming media, browsing the web, software development, and even, with such systems as UNIX and Plan$9$, direct device access can largely be reduced to locating, creating, reading, and writing files. To facilitate these operations, developers have created a vast assortment of file-systems, each presenting a unique framework underlying nearly everything people do with a computer.

For various reasons, these file-systems have historically represented only incremental improvements and alterations from their predecessors, leaving the basic design and interaction models relatively unchanged. Because of this, most common file-systems …

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward May 2014

Variable Bounds Analysis Of A Climate Model Using Software Verification Techniques, Peter Revesz, Robert Woodward

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Software verification techniques often use some approximation method that identifies the limits of the possible range of values that variables in a computer program can take during execution. Current climate models are complex computer programs that are typically iterated time-step by time-step to predict the next value of the climate-related variables. Because these iterative methods are necessarily computed only for a fixed number of iterations, they are unable to answer many long-range questions that may be posed regarding climate change, for example, whether there are natural fluctuations or whether a tipping point is reached after which there is no return …

This Extension Circular defines soil matric potential and describes principles and operational characteristics of one of the electrical resistance-type soil moisture sensors for irrigation management. It …

A Remote Capacity Utilization Estimator For Wlans, Yi Ding May 2014

A Remote Capacity Utilization Estimator For Wlans, Yi Ding

Doctoral

In WLANs, the capacity of a node is not fixed and can vary dramatically due to the shared nature of the medium under the IEEE 802.11 MAC mechanism. There are two main methods of capacity estimation in WLANs: Active methods based upon probing packets that consume the bandwidth of the channel and do not scale well. Passive methods based upon analyzing the transmitted packets that avoid the overhead of transmitting probe packets and perform with greater accuracy. Furthermore, passive methods can be implemented locally or remotely. Local passive methods require an additional dissemination mechanism in order to communicate the capacity …

Interpolation And Validation Of Arced Labyrinth Weir Discharge Coefficients, Rhen Daniel Thurgood

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Arced labyrinth weirs have been researched in recent years as a viable option to help increase spillway discharge capacity. Previously published data have indicated the hydraulic efficiency of these weirs with several configurations at different sidewall angles (α=6°, α=12°, and α=20°), expressed in terms of the discharge coefficients. These published discharge coefficient data were used in the current study, along with new experimental data, to develop a better understanding of the accuracy associated with interpolating arced labyrinth weir discharge coefficients. Discharge coefficient data for a 16° arced labyrinth weir (of similar physical size to the arced labyrinth weirs in the …

There existed an aging electrical system that needed to be upgraded. An upgrade was necessary for this system because the cost to maintain the aging technology was becoming too great. There were, however, no available schematics or technical papers describing this system. In order to upgrade the system, it first needed to be reverse engineered. The system to be upgraded was a device that would pass data back and forth from a personal computer to a proprietary storage device. The device to be upgraded communicated with the personal computer over a standard Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) interface and with …

Increasing Storm Tides In New York Harbor, 1844–2013, Stefan A. Talke, Philip M. Orton, David A. Jay May 2014

Increasing Storm Tides In New York Harbor, 1844–2013, Stefan A. Talke, Philip M. Orton, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Three of the nine highest recorded water levels in the New York Harbor region have occurred since 2010 (March 2010, August 2011, and October 2012), and eight of the largest twenty have occurred since 1990. To investigate whether this cluster of high waters is a random occurrence or indicative of intensified storm tides, we recover archival tide gauge data back to 1844 and evaluate the trajectory of the annual maximum storm tide. Approximately half of long-term variance is anticorrelated with decadal-scale variations in the North Atlantic Oscillation, while long-term trends explain the remainder. The 10 year storm tide has increased …
