Analysis Of Environmentally Friendly Marking Ink For Military Equipment And Electronics, Liang Li Jun 2014

Analysis Of Environmentally Friendly Marking Ink For Military Equipment And Electronics, Liang Li

Master's Theses

Recent advancements in corrosion-resistance coating technology has reduce the use of environmentally harmful compounds such as Hexavalent Chromium by replacing Hexavalent Chromium in primers and topcoat. However, marking inks were neglected in the process. Products such as Enthone 50 series are still widely used, which contain compounds such as lead, hexavalent chromium, bisphenol A (BPA), Cadmium Sulfide, and more. Excluding catalyst compositions in Enthone, the chemicals in the ink alone contained three reproductive toxicant and numerous carcinogens. Therefore, it was essential to search and validate the performance of potential marking ink that would meet the standards in military applications.

The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Blood Flow And Ischemic Pain, Stacey M. Fishman Jun 2014

The Effect Of Neurostimulation On Blood Flow And Ischemic Pain, Stacey M. Fishman

Biomedical Engineering

Chronic pain caused by lack of blood flow is known as ischemic pain. Neurostimulation, the application of electrical currents through a region of the body, is effective for pain modulation, and it is hypothesized that this can be explained by the gate control theory and alterations of the sympathetic output initiated by the metaboreflex. The decrease of sympathetic output reduces vasoconstriction and improves blood flow. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and interferential currents (IFC) stimulation, both non-invasive neurostimulation techniques, were evaluated for their effects on cutaneous blood flow on the palm. High or low frequency TENS and/or IFC, and the …

Reduction Of Vibration-Induced Artifacts In Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery, Qi Wang, Matthew Pepin, Aleck Wright, Ralf Dunkel, Tom Atwood, Balu Santhanam, Walter Gerstle, Armin W. Doerry, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Target vibrations introduce nonstationary phase modulation, which is termed the micro-Doppler effect, into returned synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signals. This causes artifacts, or ghost targets, which appear near vibrating targets in reconstructed SAR images. Recently, a vibration estimation method based on the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFrFT) has been developed. This method is capable of estimating the instantaneous vibration accelerations and vibration frequencies. In this paper, a deghosting method for vibrating targets in SAR images is proposed. For single-component vibrations, this method first exploits the estimation results provided by the DFrFT-based vibration estimation method to reconstruct the instantaneous vibration displacements. …

Characterization Of Li-Air Batteries: Lithium Peroxide Formation In Li-Air Electrodes, Claudia Torres Garibay, Jeremiah Deboever

TREC Final Reports

Li-air batteries are attractive candidates to be used in electric vehicles (EV) due to their high theoretical capacity, which results in an improved range, a requirement to make EV competitive against fossil fuel powered vehicles. However, Li-air battery technology is considered to be far from commercialization, due to its short lifespan. The decomposition of the electrolyte and its effect on cyclablity has been widely studied, no so much the cathode. This work will make use of recently reported novel adaptation of titration techniques to study cathode degradation in Li-air batteries, along capacity, cyclability, and EIS studies, to characterize the effect …

Crew Resource Management And Its Possible Role In Nursing Risk Management, I. R. Mcandrew, G. P. Wise Jun 2014

Crew Resource Management And Its Possible Role In Nursing Risk Management, I. R. Mcandrew, G. P. Wise

Publications

Crew Resource Management (CRM) was introduced within the aviation industry in the late 1970s after an aircraft ran out of fuel whilst the pilots were trying to solve an undercarriage problem. To reduce such errors and ultimately lower the probability of failure and the severity of risks that occur, training in CRM was rolled out across the whole industry. It has been successful over the last few years in major reductions in the number of crashes and fatalities in the commercial aviation sector. Nursing has similar concerns in that errors can ultimately result in fatalities. There are parallels in the …

Migrating To Ipv6 - The Role Of Basic Coordination, Mehdi Nikkhah, Roch Guerin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The need for a larger Internet address space was acknowledged early on, and a solution (IPv6) standardized years ago. Its adoption has, however, been anything but easy and still faces significant challenges. The situation begs the questions of "why has it been so difficult?" and "what could have been (or still be) done to facilitate this migration?" There has been significant recent interest in those questions, and the paper builds on a line of work based on technology adoption models to explore them. The results confirm the impact of several known factors, but also provide new insight. In particular, they …

Understanding The Benefits And Limitations Of Increasing Maximum Rotor Tip Speed For Utility-Scale Wind Turbines, Andrew Ning Jun 2014

Understanding The Benefits And Limitations Of Increasing Maximum Rotor Tip Speed For Utility-Scale Wind Turbines, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

For utility-scale wind turbines, the maximum rotor rotation speed is generally constrained by noise considerations. Innovations in acoustics and/or siting in remote locations may enable future wind turbine designs to operate with higher tip speeds. Wind turbines designed to take advantage of higher tip speeds are expected to be able to capture more energy and utilize lighter drivetrains because of their decreased maximum torque loads. However, the magnitude of the potential cost savings is unclear, and the potential trade-offs with rotor and tower sizing are not well understood. A multidisciplinary, system-level framework was developed to facilitate wind turbine and wind …

Robust Two-Stage Stochastic Linear Programs With Moment Constraints, Sarah Yini Gao, Lingchen Kong, Jie Sun Jun 2014

Robust Two-Stage Stochastic Linear Programs With Moment Constraints, Sarah Yini Gao, Lingchen Kong, Jie Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We consider the two-stage stochastic linear programming model, in which the recourse function is a worst case expected value over a set of probabilistic distributions. These distributions share the same first- and second-order moments. By using duality of semi-infinite programming and assuming knowledge on extreme points of the dual polyhedron of the constraints, we show that a deterministic equivalence of the two-stage problem is a second-order cone optimization problem. Numerical examples are presented to show non-conservativeness and computational advantage of this approach.

Tailsitter Heading Estimation Using A Magnetometer, Timothy Mclain, Jason M. Beach, Matthew E. Argyle, Randall W. Beard, Stephen Morris Jun 2014

Tailsitter Heading Estimation Using A Magnetometer, Timothy Mclain, Jason M. Beach, Matthew E. Argyle, Randall W. Beard, Stephen Morris

Faculty Publications

The tailsitter aircraft merges the endurance and speed of fixed-wing aircraft with the flexibility and VTOL abilities of rotorcraft. Typical control and estimation schemes make assumptions about the maximum attitude an aircraft will experience that are not valid for tailsitters. This paper discusses the limitations of a typical EKF magnetometer measurement update that uses Euler angles. It is shown how to use a second set of Euler angles to avoid gimbal lock. A method is given that bypasses the use of Euler angles altogether and directly uses the quaternion to determine heading error and update the attitude estimate. This method …

Quaternion Based Attitude Error For A Tailsitter In Hover Flight, Timothy Mclain, Matthew E. Argyle, Jason M. Beach, Randall W. Beard, Stephen Morris

Faculty Publications

The tailsitter is a promising airframe that can take off and land on its tail and transition to level flight. While this ability provides vertical takeoff and landing capabilities with no additional moving parts, it introduces interesting control challenges. In this paper, we look at the attitude control system of a tailsitter in hover flight and show that the behaviour of the aircraft relies on the method used to compute the attitude error. We investigate three different methods of computing the attitude error, quaternion feedback, resolved tilt twist, and the resolved Euler angles, and compare them through simulated hover flight.

Revisiting Risk-Sensitive Mdps: New Algorithms And Results, Ping Hou, William Yeoh, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham Jun 2014

Revisiting Risk-Sensitive Mdps: New Algorithms And Results, Ping Hou, William Yeoh, Pradeep Reddy Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) have been shown to be effective models for planning under uncertainty, theobjective to minimize the expected cumulative cost is inappropriate for high-stake planning problems. As such, Yu, Lin, and Yan (1998) introduced the Risk-Sensitive MDP (RSMDP) model, where the objective is to find a policy that maximizes the probability that the cumulative cost is within some user-defined cost threshold. In this paper, we revisit this problem and introduce new algorithms that are based on classical techniques, such as depth-first search and dynamic programming, and a recently introduced technique called Topological Value Iteration (TVI). We demonstrate …

In Vivo Imaging Of Human Cone Photoreceptor Inner Segments, Drew Scoles, Yusufu N. Sulai, Christopher S. Langlo, Gerald A. Fishman, Christine A. Curcio, Joseph Carroll, Alfredo Dubra

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose.

An often overlooked prerequisite to cone photoreceptor gene therapy development is residual photoreceptor structure that can be rescued. While advances in adaptive optics (AO) retinal imaging have recently enabled direct visualization of individual cone and rod photoreceptors in the living human retina, these techniques largely detect strongly directionally-backscattered (waveguided) light from normal intact photoreceptors. This represents a major limitation in using existing AO imaging to quantify structure of remnant cones in degenerating retina.

Methods.

Photoreceptor inner segment structure was assessed with a novel AO scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) differential phase technique, that we termed nonconfocal split-detector, in two healthy …

Kinetic Analysis Of Thiol Oxidation To Study The Effects Of Fluorinated Groups On Metal Phthalocyanine Catalysts, Nellone Eze Reid May 2014

Kinetic Analysis Of Thiol Oxidation To Study The Effects Of Fluorinated Groups On Metal Phthalocyanine Catalysts, Nellone Eze Reid

Dissertations

The oxidation of thiol (RSH) to disulfide (RSSR) is important biologically and industrially. Corrosive and malodorous thiols exist as contaminants in wastewater discharge from mining facilities, pulp and paper mills, tanneries, and oil refineries. The elimination of thiols from petroleum products is necessary for even cleaner fuels. Thiols in gas products can also inhibit catalyst activity for some downstream processes.

Experiments and mechanistic kinetic studies were conducted for the aerobic oxidation of 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and 4-fluorobenzenethiol (4-FBT) catalyzed by cobalt phthalocyanines: H16PcCo, F16PcCo, and F64PcCo, each exhibiting a metal center subject to increasing Lewis …

Global Optimization Methods For Localization In Compressive Sensing, Marco Rossi May 2014

Global Optimization Methods For Localization In Compressive Sensing, Marco Rossi

Dissertations

The dissertation discusses compressive sensing and its applications to localization in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars. Compressive sensing is a paradigm at the intersection between signal processing and optimization. It advocates the sensing of “sparse” signals (i.e., represented using just a few terms from a basis expansion) by using a sampling rate much lower than that required by the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem (i.e., twice the highest frequency present in the signal of interest). Low-rate sampling reduces implementation’s constraints and translates into cost savings due to fewer measurements required. This is particularly true in localization applications when the number of measurements is …

Physical Controls On Water Flow And Solute Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Xiaolong Geng May 2014

Physical Controls On Water Flow And Solute Transport In Coastal Aquifers, Xiaolong Geng

Dissertations

Groundwater flow and associated subsurface solute fates have a significant impact on the structure and productivity of near-shore coastal ecosystems. For proper assessment and management of these coastal groundwater resources, it is quite essential to investigate the key factors (tides, waves, evaporation, and freshwater recharge etc.) affecting coastal groundwater systems. The main objective of this study is to examine and quantify two important physical control factors, oceanic waves and evaporation, on the groundwater flow and solute transport in near-shore aquifers. For the investigation of wave effects, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling tool, Fluent, is used to simulate wave- induced …

Field Methods For Rapidly Characterizing Contaminant Mobility In Paint Waste During Bridge Rehabilitation, Zhan Shu May 2014

Field Methods For Rapidly Characterizing Contaminant Mobility In Paint Waste During Bridge Rehabilitation, Zhan Shu

Dissertations

Currently, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) uses a conservative approach of classifying all paint waste as hazardous from bridges undergoing rehabilitation which were constructed before 1989. This practice stems from the fact that there is no approved reliable, fast, and efficient method for classifying paint waste in-situ as non-hazardous. The main objective of this study was to develop a model that can predict the leachability of trace metals in paint waste generated during bridge rehabilitation. A statistically significant number of bridge sites were sampled based on hypothesis testing. Samples were then evaluated for total concentration of Resource …

Modeling, Control And Simulation Of Control-Affine Nonlinear Systems With State-Dependent Transfer Functions, Roger Kobla Kwadzogah May 2014

Modeling, Control And Simulation Of Control-Affine Nonlinear Systems With State-Dependent Transfer Functions, Roger Kobla Kwadzogah

Dissertations

There has been no known research that applies nonlinear transfer function to a nonlinear control problem. The belief is that nonlinear systems have no transfer functions. The Laplace transformation required to define transfer functions is not tractable mathematically when the coefficients of the differential equation are functions of state, output and control variables. In other words, it is not defined for systems that do not obey principles of superposition. Only linear systems obey this principle. Therefore, this dissertation work represents the very first research to demonstrate how transfer functions can be used to represent and design feedback control for nonlinear …

Dynamics Of 1d Granular Column, Luo Zuo May 2014

Dynamics Of 1d Granular Column, Luo Zuo

Dissertations

This dissertation is focused on a discrete element study of the dynamics of a one- dimensional column of inelastic spheres that it subjected to taps by prescribing a half sine wave pulse to supporting floor. Contact interactions obey the Walton-Braun soft-sphere model in which the loading (unloading) path is governing by linear springs of stiffness K1, thereby producing col lisional energy loss through a constant restitution coefficient e. Over a ‘short time scale’, computations are done to examine the floor pulse wave as it propagates through the column contact network. Comparisons of the simulated findings are made with experimental measurements …

Gas-Solid Transport And Reaction Via Intervened Evaporating Sprays, Pengfei He May 2014

Gas-Solid Transport And Reaction Via Intervened Evaporating Sprays, Pengfei He

Dissertations

Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is a major process used for converting heavy oils to transportation fuels and light olefins. The gas-solid transport with reaction via intervened evaporating sprays in the FCC riser is specially important but complicated, with coupled mechanisms of chemical reaction and heat, momentum and mass transfer among multiple phases (liquid, solid and gas) in the restriction of wall boundary. Recent developments in FCC process models have progressed along two lines. One aims to develop composition-based kinetic models derived from molecular characterization of petroleum fractions while overlooking the hydrodynamic effect on local catalyst to oil ratio (CTO). The …

Visualization Support For Cognitive Sciences, Matt J. Marangoni, Thomas Wischgoll, Yue Zhou, Leslie M. Blaha, Ross Smith, Rhonda J. Vickery

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The science of computer graphics and visualization is intertwined in many ways with Cognitive Sciences. On the one hand, computer graphics can lead to virtual environments in which a person is exposed to a virtual scenario. Typically, 3D-capable display technology combined with tracking systems, which are capable of identifying where the person is located at, are deployed to achieve maximal immersion in that the persons point of view is recreated in the virtual scenario. As a result, an impressive experience is created such that that person is navigating the virtual scenario as if it was real. On the other hand, …
