Mimo Transmission In Spatially Correlated Fading, Joy Iong-Zon Chen, Chi-Tsung Huang, Yu-Hsing Chien Jun 2014

Mimo Transmission In Spatially Correlated Fading, Joy Iong-Zon Chen, Chi-Tsung Huang, Yu-Hsing Chien

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) system transmission over a channel characterized by spatially correlated fading is addressed in this article. Two scenarios that involved using well-known statistical fading distributions, correlatedRician and correlated-Nakagami-m fading, were deployed in analysis. The moment-generating function obtained using a stochastic process was applied to determine the ergodic, or average, channel capacity, thus by passing the difficulty traditionally associated with calculating the probability density function of the signal-to-noise ratio. The results of several numerical and Monte-Carlo comparisons are offered for validating the accuracy of the theoretically derived formulae. Furthermore, many plots were designed by combining different numbers of …

Global Localization Using Dead-Reckoning And Kinect Sensors For Robots With Omnidirectional Mecanum Wheels, Ching-Chih Tsai, Feng-Chun Tai, Yu-Cheng Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a low-cost global pose localization method using least-squares method and extended Kalman filter (EKF) for an anthropomorphous dual-arm mobile robot (ADAMR) driven by omnidirectional Mecanum wheels in indoor environments. This method is developed by fusing measurements from the KINECT sensor and four encoders mounted on the omnidirectional Mecanum wheels. The KINECT sensor is used to recognize landmarks in the working environments of the robot, and then obtain the azimuth angles and distances between these landmarks and the robot. Based on these measured information, a static global pose initialization algorithm using least-squares method is applied to estimate both …

A Unified Approach To The Assessment Of Student Learning Outcomes In Electrical Engineering Programs, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, a unified approach to the assessment of student and program learning outcomes to satisfy ABET and SACS accreditations criteria is proposed. This new approach takes into consideration the criteria of both accreditations to streamline the assessment process. As a result, a set of six skills categories were developed for SACS in which the eleven ABET student learning outcomes were embedded to satisfy both accreditation criteria. Furthermore, a standardized set of artifacts and rubrics were also developed to measure each skill category based on a given set of performance indicators. Data collected at the sophomore, junior and senior …

Google Forms: A Real-Time Formative Assessment Approach For Adaptive Learning, Rami J. Haddad, Youakim Kalaani

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we describe our approach on how to achieve an adaptive learner-centric environment by using an unconventional student feedback process that utilizes Google Forms to periodically collect information about the course instruction. Students were asked to provide their input regarding lectures' clarity and content; the use of visual aids; time management; problem solving, instruction delivery; and student engagement in the classroom. Data collected from these anonymous surveys provided real-time formative feedback that helped faculty to react just in time to address issues related to student learning process. In addition to providing continuous feedback, this process has also shown …

A Particle Swarm Optimization-Like Algorithm For Constrained Minimal Spanning Tree Problems, Chun-Chao Yeh, Ying-Che Chien Jun 2014

A Particle Swarm Optimization-Like Algorithm For Constrained Minimal Spanning Tree Problems, Chun-Chao Yeh, Ying-Che Chien

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Previous studies have discussed various constrained minimal spanning tree (MST) problems. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm for solving a class of constrained MST problems. The proposed PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)- like strategy for solving constrained MST problems identifies optimal MSTs under degree and delay constraints. The solution quality and computation time of the proposed PLCMST (PSO-Like algorithm for Constrained MST problems) algorithm is compared with two other algorithms: one based on ant colony optimization, and the other based on a genetic algorithm strategy. Our experimental results show that the PLCMST outperforms the other two approaches, particularly when …

A Wheeled Mobile Robot Path-Tracking System Based On Image Processing And Adaptive Cmac, Jih-Gau Juang, Ko-Jui Hsu, Chih-Min Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study entailed applying image-processing techniques and an intelligent control method to a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) for real-time trajectory recognition and tracking. The WMR was fitted with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera to capture images of the environment, and the hue-saturationintensity color space was used to classify the color features of the captured images. The WMR calculates the relative position of a target object by using image-processing and edgedetection algorithms. This paper proposes a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and adaptive CMAC to replace conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller for guiding the WMR to track a desired path. Moreover, using …

The Development Of A Cost-Effective And Optimized Dp-Spiv System For Fluid Turbulence Researches, Yu-Chi Chang, Yi-Hung Chang, Yaw-Huei Lee, Yi-Chih Chow

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Turbulent flows and issues of turbulence modeling have long been intriguing and important in fluid researches and practices. The mean or instantaneous velocity gradient tensors with six independent components, or other tensorial variables involving gradients, play a key role in turbulence dynamics and models. The advancement of the knowledge of these parameters relies on measurement systems built on sophisticated flow diagnostic techniques that enable both detailed and complete measurements. However, such systems seem inevitably complicated to operate and costly to build and maintain. Therefore, we develop and optimize a dual-plane stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (DP-SPIV) system that is much more …

Numerical Modeling Of Wave-Induced Rotations Of A Bottom-Hinged Flapper With A Sph Model, Da-Wei Chen, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Chih-Min Hsieh, Yi-Chih Chow, Jiahn-Horng Chen, Chen-Chou Lin, Robert Rong-Jiann Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics model for simulating wave-induced rotations of a bottom-hinged flapper was established in a 2-D numerical wave flume. The simulated rotating angles illustrated that the flapper could swing back and forth following harmonic wave loadings. The simulations were also seen to be in good agreement with experimental data, confirming the applicability of the present numerical model. The simulated hydrodynamic behaviors at different phases showed that the flapper moved downstream under the wave crest and upstream under the wave trough following the elliptical form of water particle trajectory. The energy conversions of a flapper during …

Application Of Adaptive Variable Speed Back-Stepping Sliding Mode Controller For Pmlsm Position Control, Mei-Yung Chen, Jian-Shiun Lu Jun 2014

Application Of Adaptive Variable Speed Back-Stepping Sliding Mode Controller For Pmlsm Position Control, Mei-Yung Chen, Jian-Shiun Lu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this research, an adaptive variable speed back-stepping sliding mode controller (AVSBSMC) is proposed to control the permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) on high-precision positioning servo system platform. This controller combines the dynamic features of variable speed control (VSC) and the positioning characteristics of adaptive back-stepping sliding mode control (ABSMC). Firstly, the detailed dynamic machine model of PMLSM is established. Secondly, the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and ABSMC controllers are proposed to compensate the uncertainties in position control. Then, the one provides the better servo performances is the position controller in the motor system. Thirdly, the variable speed controller (VSC) and …

Space Shuttle Case Studies: Challenger And Columbia, Scott L. Post

Publications

The two Space Shuttle tragedies, Challenger and Columbia, have led to many papers on case studies on engineering ethics. The Challenger disaster in particular is often discussed due to the infamous teleconference that took place the night before the launch in which some engineers tried to postpone the launch. However, the space shuttle program itself is worthy of study as it relates to the engineering design process, and the details of the Challenger and Columbia disasters are worthy of discussion as they relate to a variety of sub-disciplines, including material science, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. This paper summarizes …

Machine Design Experiments Using Mechanical Springs To Foster Discovery Learning, Peter William Malak, Mark L. Nagurka

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Machine Design Experiments Using Mechanical Springs to Foster Discover Learning For the typical undergraduate engineering student the topic of mechanical springs is introduced and discussed in several courses. A first exposure may be in a physics course, where springs are presented as idealized mechanical energy storage components. Springs store potential energy, complementing masses that store kinetic energy and dampers that are resistive and offer no energy storage capability. In an electrical circuit course, springs are often presented as the analog of either capacitors or inductors, depending on which analogy is used. For mechanical engineering students, springs are a core component studied …

Phonon Confinement Using Spirally Designed Elastic Resonators In Discrete Continuum, Sourav Banerjee, Raiz U. Ahmed Jun 2014

Phonon Confinement Using Spirally Designed Elastic Resonators In Discrete Continuum, Sourav Banerjee, Raiz U. Ahmed

Faculty Publications

Periodic and chiral orientation of microstructures, here we call phononic crystals, have extraordinary capabilities to facilitate the innovative design of new generation metamaterials. Periodic arrangements of phononic crystals are capable of opening portals of non-passing, non-dispersive mechanical waves. Defying conventional design of regular periodicity, in this paper spirally periodic but chiral orientation of resonators are envisioned. Dynamics of the spirally connected resonators and the acoustic wave propagation through the spirally connected multiple local resonators are studied using fundamental physics. In present study the spiral systems with local resonators are assumed to be discrete media immersed in fluid. In this paper …

Uncertainty Quantification Driven Predictive Multi-Scale Model For Synthesis Of Mycotoxins, Sourav Banerjee, Gabriel A. Terejanu, Anindya Chanda

Faculty Publications

Many toxic molds synthesize and release an array of poisons, termed mycotoxins that have an enormous impact on human health, agriculture and economy [1]. These molds contaminate our buildings, indoor air and crops, cause life threatening human and animal diseases and reduce agricultural output [2]. In order to design appropriate approaches to minimize the detrimental effects of these fungi, it is essential to develop diagnostic methodologies that can rapidly and accurately determine based on fungal strains and their growth patterns, the extent of mycotoxin mediated damage caused to the environment. Here we developed a novel multi-scale predictive mathematical model that could …

Induction Phone Charger Case, Dante Eley, Nicholas Mason, Laurence Pringle

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses

This report discusses the project of creating a manual charging phone case for smartphones by means of electromagnetic induction. In today's world, smartphones are being used on the go more often, creating an increased demand for battery life. The capacity of current batteries cannot keep up with the constant usage of data in such activities as emailing, social media, apps, and more. We developed an efficient, ergonomic, and aesthetically pleasing phone case that can manually charge a smartphone without an electrical outlet, but by means of electromagnetic induction. This product would target two main demographics: business people who are constantly …

Comparison Of One-Dimensional Turbulence And Direct Numerical Simulations Of Soot Formation And Transport In A Nonpremixed Ethylene Jet Flame, David O. Lignell, Garrison C. Fredline, Adam D. Lewis Jun 2014

Comparison Of One-Dimensional Turbulence And Direct Numerical Simulations Of Soot Formation And Transport In A Nonpremixed Ethylene Jet Flame, David O. Lignell, Garrison C. Fredline, Adam D. Lewis

Faculty Publications

Accurate models of soot formation in turbulent flames are important for correctly predicting and simulating flames and fires. Modeling soot formation and transport is challenging due to the complex chemical formation processes, and differential diffusion of soot relative to a flame. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) have highlighted the importance of such transport on soot concentrations, however DNS is computationally expensive. The one-dimensional turbulence (ODT) model is able resolve a full range of length and timescales and solves the evolution of diffusive and reactive scalars in the natural physical coordinate. We present results of soot formation in ODT and compare the …

Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Adaptive Teaching: An Effective Approach for Learner-Centered Classrooms ABSTRACTWith the recent focus on student achievement, teachers are striving to improve the quality oftheir instruction methods to achieve a learner-centered environment in their classrooms. Thedifference in the students’ level of achievement in any specific course is mainly due to thedifference in the students’ aptitude for learning “Learning Style”. Unfortunately, the statictraditional teaching style “Chalk-&-Talk” which is still being used in engineering schools doesnot adapt to the changes in the cognitive profile of the student cohorts which reflects negativelyon the students’ achievement and performance, especially in engineering. In this paper, we discuss our …

Factors Of Group Design Decision Making, Andrew Jackson, Nathan Mentzer, Angelika N. Zissimopoulos Jun 2014

Factors Of Group Design Decision Making, Andrew Jackson, Nathan Mentzer, Angelika N. Zissimopoulos

IMPACT Publications

Design is a decision-making process. Designers make decisions between alternative solutions, decisions about feasibility of individual solutions, decisions about narrowing or broadening the problem scope. They also make logistical decision about when teams will meet, how decisions will be made. Recent analysis of high school student design activities revealed that groups and individuals are not spending much time on decision processes and it can be assumed that the faculties of beginning college students are in a similar vein. In the past year changes were made to a freshman level design thinking course to improve student approaches to decision making.Accompanying these changes, …

Location Based Recommendation Application, Nicholas Dario, Steven Goetter, Christopher Polson

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

For our senior design project we decided to make an iOS application that could generate a list of nearby locations for the user to visit. We wanted the recommendation list to be unique for each user instead of a list of the most popular locations in the area. To accomplish this we developed our own recommendation algorithm from scratch. The algorithm uses a tagging system in which users and system administrators are able to add and modify the tags associated with locations. By using the tags associated with each location and with each user, our algorithm is able to generate …
