The aviation industry is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5% until the year 2031 according to Boeing Outlook Report of 2012. Although the aerospace manufacturers have introduced new aircraft and engines technologies to reduce the emissions generated by aircraft engines, about 15% of all aircraft in 2032 will be using the older technologies. Therefore, agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Astronautics Administration (NASA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) among others together with some academic institutions have been working to characterize both physical and chemical characteristics of the aircraft particulate matter emissions to …

Design Of A High Performance Actuation System Enabled By Energy Coupling Actuation, Daniel Richard Skelton Jul 2014

Design Of A High Performance Actuation System Enabled By Energy Coupling Actuation, Daniel Richard Skelton

Open Access Theses

The main goal of the research was to design, manufacture, and test a new linear actuation system. Research was conducted on several types of actuation methods applied to hydraulic valves. A literature review showed that most existing actuator systems have the actuator and control mass coupled together. There is a need for high speed actuation. The proposed idea is to have the actuation mass always moving while accelerating and decelerating the control mass. The decoupling of these two will allow for the actuation and control mechanism to be independent and only move the control mechanism when needed. Initial modeling, as …

Development, Numerical Demonstration And Experimental Verification Of A Method For Model Updating Of Boundary Conditions, Christian Eduardo Silva Salazar Jul 2014

Development, Numerical Demonstration And Experimental Verification Of A Method For Model Updating Of Boundary Conditions, Christian Eduardo Silva Salazar

Open Access Theses

The study of vibrations in beams has been largely addressed by authors and researchers. However, relatively few researchers have considered the case of unknown boundary conditions, as usually it is reasonable to assume the classical cases such as simply supported, clamped or free. Indeed, there are a wide variety of boundary-condition configurations, each one representing a whole different problem with its own modal characteristics. ^ A method for updating experimental beam models to specifically address the issue of unknown boundary conditions is proposed. This methodology takes advantage of vector comparison techniques such as the modal assurance criterion and the dot …

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto Jul 2014

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto

Open Access Theses

Tire/pavement interaction noise is a major component of both exterior pass-by noise and vehicle interior noise. The current testing methods for ranking tires from loud to quiet require expensive equipment, multiple tires, and/or long experimental set-up and run times. If a laboratory based off-vehicle test could be used to identify the airborne and structure-borne potential of a tire from its dynamic characteristics, a relative ranking of a large group of tires could be performed at relatively modest expense. This would provide a smaller sample set of tires for follow-up testing and thus save expense for automobile OEMs. The focus of …

Design And Development Of A Novel Test Method To Measure The Slipper / Swashplate Interface Fluid Film In A Positive Displacement Machine, Natalie A. Spencer

Open Access Theses

Although robust models of fluid film behavior between the slipper / swashplate lubricating interface in positive displacement machines have been developed, measuring this same fluid film thickness to a highly accurate degree inside a relatively unaltered axial piston unit has never been accomplished until now. A test method was created to close this gap in available data by measuring fluid film thickness between the slipper and swashplate in a 130cc axial piston pump. Precise knowledge of the gap height between the slipper and swashplate at various shaft angle locations during operation provides critical insight into machine behavior. The design, validation, …

A New Integrated Design Framework For The Facility Layout Problem, Kyle F. Thomas Jul 2014

A New Integrated Design Framework For The Facility Layout Problem, Kyle F. Thomas

Open Access Theses

This thesis proposes a new integrated design framework for solving facility layout problems (FLP). The most popular existing framework, Muther's Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) does not address the variety of design goals associated with facility layout problems and is highly manual and so time consuming to perform. Furthermore, the SLP framework does not help the designer select a modeling tool to use in developing design alternatives, either by defining what a requisite model would include, or explicitly suggesting ones from literature. With the advancements made in academic research and computational capabilities since the development of the SLP framework, a new …

A Numerical Procedure To Design The Optimal Axial Balance In External Gear Machines And Its Potential In Formulating Novel Efficient Design Solutions, Divya Thiagarajan

Open Access Theses

A novel numerical procedure to design the optimal axial balance in external gear machines (EGMs) has been formulated and developed in the present study. Lateral lubricating interfaces exist between the lateral bushes and the rotating gears in pressure compensated designs of EGMs and play a significant role in minimizing power losses arising from fluid shear stress and leakages from the gap. Moreover, lateral bushes in pressure compensated designs of EGMs perform significant functions of sealing the tooth space volumes while they transfer fluid from the inlet to the outlet port. ^ The losses from the lateral gap from these two …

Most of the existing literature is focused on exploring the utility of online platforms on activities after the problem is defined and teams are formed. Also, there …

Influence Of Referential Coding In A Choice Task Performed In A Simulated Driving Cockpit, Aiping Xiong Jul 2014

Influence Of Referential Coding In A Choice Task Performed In A Simulated Driving Cockpit, Aiping Xiong

Open Access Theses

Driving and other tasks performed by the driver of a vehicle are spatial. Thus, it is important to understand how the driver represents the spatial environment. In laboratory studies, the Simon task is used to study spatial coding. Participants are to make a left or right response to a nonspatial stimulus feature, but the stimulus can occur in a left or right position. The Simon effect is that responses are faster when the stimulus location corresponds with the response location. That effect is not usually found for a go/no-go task in which only one response is made to one of …

Open Access Theses

The production of value-added, bio-based industrial commodity chemicals is an important area in science right now and this study provides an initial step in the recovery of bio-based chemicals from hemicellulose. Hemicellulose is a long chain polymer mostly consisting of xylose, which is a five-carbon sugar, and a variety of other compounds that are ubiquitous in plant life. The hemicellulose polymer chain can be depolymerized into smaller components, called xylooligosaccharides (XOS) with different chain lengths of xylose linked by beta-1-4 glycosidic bonds, using either hot water, or dilute sulfuric acid. The xylooligosaccharides can then be purified from one another from …

Multimodal Perception Of Histological Images For Persons Blind Or Visually Impaired, Ting Zhang Jul 2014

Multimodal Perception Of Histological Images For Persons Blind Or Visually Impaired, Ting Zhang

Open Access Theses

Currently there is no suitable substitute technology to enable blind or visually impaired (BVI) people to interpret visual scientific data commonly generated during lab experimentation in real time, such as performing light microscopy, spectrometry, and observing chemical reactions. This reliance upon visual interpretation of scientific data certainly impedes students and scientists that are BVI from advancing in careers in medicine, biology, chemistry, and other scientific fields. To address this challenge, a real-time multimodal image perception system is developed to transform standard laboratory blood smear images for persons with BVI to perceive, employing a combination of auditory, haptic, and vibrotactile feedbacks. …

Transverse Compression Of High-Performance Ballistic Fibers, Zherui Guo

Open Access Theses

High performance ballistic fibers have been in use for decades, specifically in protective applications against ballistic impact such as bulletproof vest layers and aircraft turbine engine fragmentation barriers. These high performance fibers have extremely high strength-to-weight ratios and high moduli of elasticity in the axial direction, making them extremely suitable for high impact situations. In particular, para-phenyleneterephthalamide (PPTA for short) fibers such as Kevlar® and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers such as Dyneema® are amongst the more popular high performance fibers in today's world. While the longitudinal mechanical response of these fibers have been extensively researched, their transverse mechanical response …

In this thesis the performance of three estimators, (center of gravity, template matching and maximum likelihood (MLE)) to estimate the center of the beam on a photoemissive receiver array in a Free Space Optics (FSO) system, is compared in terms of mean square error. Simulations have been conducted in Matlab by generating a two dimensional nonhomogeneous Poisson process, and, mean square error is computed for three estimators. The cases of continuous and discrete arrays are also considered for various levels of signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. Simulations have shown that the MLE gives the least mean squared error and especially performs significantly …

A Lightweight N-Cover Algorithm For Diagnostic Fail Data Minimization, Shraddha Ghanshyam Bodhe Jul 2014

A Lightweight N-Cover Algorithm For Diagnostic Fail Data Minimization, Shraddha Ghanshyam Bodhe

Open Access Theses

The increasing design complexity of modern ICs has made it extremely difficult and expensive to test them comprehensively. As the transistor count and density of circuits increase, a large volume of fail data is collected by the tester for a single failing IC. The diagnosis procedure analyzes this fail data to give valuable information about the possible defects that may have caused the circuit to fail. However, without any feedback from the diagnosis procedure, the tester may often collect fail data which is potentially not useful for identifying the defects in the failing circuit. This not only consumes tester memory …

Correlating Molecular Architecture Of A Radical Polymer Based Copolymer With Its Electrical Transport Properties, Holly Chan Jul 2014

Correlating Molecular Architecture Of A Radical Polymer Based Copolymer With Its Electrical Transport Properties, Holly Chan

Open Access Theses

The design and synthesis of electrically-conductive macromolecules can lead to significant improvements in the performance of polymer-based energy conversion devices (e.g., thermoelectric devices). For these organic electronic devices, conjugated polymers have dominated the area of conductive polymers; however, these materials are usually synthesized using conditions that lead to poorly-defined polymers. Furthermore, in these increasingly-standard polymers, the charge transport ability of the polymer thin films is largely affected by the degree of crystallinity, which is a difficult property to control in a reproducible fashion. Therefore, we seek to explore a new class of amorphous, non-conjugated polymers containing a stable radical …

Correlating Grain Size To Radiation Damage Tolerance Of Tungsten Materials Exposed To Relevant Fusion Conditions, Sean Robert Gonderman

Open Access Theses

Tungsten remains a leading candidate for plasma facing component (PFC) in future fusion devices. This is in large part due to its strong thermal and mechanical properties. The ITER project has already chosen to use an all tungsten divertor. Despite having a high melting temperature and low erosion rate, tungsten faces a large variety of issues when subject to fusion like conditions. These include embrittlement, melting, and extreme morphology change (growth of fuzz nanostructure). The work presented here investigates mechanisms that drive surface morphology change in tungsten materials exposed to fusion relevant plasmas. Specifically, tungsten materials of different grain sizes …

This work explores the use of glucose within exhaled breath in attempt to establish an indirect method of blood glucose level measurement. Specifically, exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is examined. A breath condensing unit was designed to measure the temperature of the system, flow rate, volume of expired …

Improved Random Demodulator For Compressed Sensing Applications, Sathya Narayanan Hariharan Jul 2014

Improved Random Demodulator For Compressed Sensing Applications, Sathya Narayanan Hariharan

Open Access Theses

The advances in the field of signal processing have led to the continuous increase in the bandwidth of signals. Sampling these signals becomes harder and harder due to the increased bandwidth. This brings in need for a complex high rate ADCs to meet the Nyquist rate which is the minimum rate to avoid aliasing. For a given increase in bandwidth, there has to be a corresponding increase in the sampling rate of ADC. This might not be possible in the near future at the current rate of increase in bandwidth. Hence, there is a need to replace the current Nyquist …
