The calculated results are intended to identify paths for future work on the next generation nuclear power plant (GEN-IV). This document describes the proposed system in sufficient detail to communicate a good understanding of the overall system, its components, …
Imperfection-Aware Design Of Cnfet Digital Vlsi Circuits, Abbasali Arabi Mazraehshahi
Imperfection-Aware Design Of Cnfet Digital Vlsi Circuits, Abbasali Arabi Mazraehshahi
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNFET) is one of the promising candidates as extensions to silicon CMOS devices. The CNFET, which is a 1-D structure with a near-ballistic transport capability, can potentially offer excellent device characteristics and order-of-magnitude better energy-delay product over standard CMOS devices. Significant challenges in CNT synthesis prevent CNFETs today from achieving such ideal benefits. CNT density variation and metallic CNTs are the dominant type of CNT variations/imperfections that cause performance variation, large static power consumption, and yield degradation. We present an imperfection-aware design technique for CNFET digital VLSI circuits by: 1) Analytical models that are developed to …
Modeling Of Kinetically Limited Growth Rate For Solution-Synthesized Germanium Nanocrystals, Nicholas Shoop
Modeling Of Kinetically Limited Growth Rate For Solution-Synthesized Germanium Nanocrystals, Nicholas Shoop
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Solution synthesis is a common method of generating semiconductor nanocrystals. For solution synthesis, many studies have assumed that the growth rate is diffusion-limited with an unphysically low diffusion constant. In this thesis, a model is developed that considers both diffusion and surface kinetics. The diffusion coefficient of Ge monomers through the solvent, octadecene, at elevated synthesis temperatures is estimated to be on the order of 10-5 to 10-4 cm2/sec, while the mass transfer boundary layer thickness is estimated to be on the order of a few nanometers, similar to the nanocrystal size. These two realistic conditions strongly suggest that the …
Refinement And Characterization Of Synthetic Vocal Fold Models, Shelby Charisse Ward
Refinement And Characterization Of Synthetic Vocal Fold Models, Shelby Charisse Ward
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding vocal fold mechanics is an integral part of voice research and synthetic vocal fold models are an essential tool in characterizing vocal fold mechanics. These models contain multiple layers with varying stiffness, much like human vocal folds. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the current models and modeling techniques, as well as investigate the impact of asymmetry on model vibration. A new design for an MRI-based model is detailed. This model has a more realistic geometry than the simplified models and mimics some of the vibratory characteristics observed in human vocal folds. The MRI-based model was used …

Metallic states appearing at interfaces between dissimilar insulating oxides exhibit intriguing phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetism. Despite tremendous progress in understanding their origins, very little is known about how to control the conduction pathways and the distribution of charge carriers. Using optical spectroscopic measurements and density-functional theory (DFT) simulations, we examine the effect of SrTiO3 (STO) spacer layer thickness on the optical transparency and carrier distribution in La δ-doped STO superlattices. We experimentally observe that these metallic superlattices remain highly transparent to visible light; a direct consequence of the appropriately large gap between the O 2p and Ti 3d …
Axial Compressor Design With Counter-Rotation And Variable Rpm For Stall Mitigation, Madhur Tiwari
Axial Compressor Design With Counter-Rotation And Variable Rpm For Stall Mitigation, Madhur Tiwari
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Compressor Stall, an aerodynamic instability due to abnormal air flow in the compressor resulting in loss of total pressure and compressor performance. One of the reasons of compressor stall is due to rise in static back pressure at compressor exit which may result from an imbalance of incidence angle at the rotor and stator and rotational speed. The paper presents the results of a new axial compressor design with counter rotation and variable RPM. Counter-Rotation is used to push compressor performance during stall by moving the operating point away from surge line with a higher pressure ratio rise. Initially an …
Variable Viscosity Condition In The Modeling Of A Slider Bearing, Kedar Nath Uprety, S.C. Mancas
Variable Viscosity Condition In The Modeling Of A Slider Bearing, Kedar Nath Uprety, S.C. Mancas
Publications
To reduce tear and wear of machinery lubrication is essential. Lubricants form a layer between two surfaces preventing direct contact and reduce friction between moving parts and hence reduce wear. In this short letter the lubrication of two slider bearings with parallel and nonparallel is studied. First, we show that bearings with parallel plates cannot support any load. For bearings with nonparallel plates we are interested on how constant and temperature dependent viscosity affects the properties of the bearings. Also, a critical temperature for which the bearings would fail due to excess in temperature is found for both latter cases. …
A New Guard-Band Call Admission Control Policy Based On Acceptance Factor For Wireless Cellular Networks, Asadur Rahman, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury
A New Guard-Band Call Admission Control Policy Based On Acceptance Factor For Wireless Cellular Networks, Asadur Rahman, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research
Utilization of limited resources and quality of service (QoS) improvement are the major concerns for wireless communication networks. Excessive call blocking is a constraint to attain the desired QoS. In cellular network, as the traffic arrival rate increases, new call blocking probability (CBP) increases considerably. Paying profound concern, we have proposed a guard-band call admission control policy that reduces the new call blocking probability with approximately steady handover call dropping probability (CDP) that ensures QoS. Our proposed scheme introduces the acceptance factor in specific guard channels where new calls get access according to the acceptance factor. The analytical results prove …

Interference Declination For Dynamic Channel Borrowing Scheme In Wireless Networks, Shakil Ahmed, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research
In modern days, users in the wireless networks are increasing drastically. It has become the major concern for researchers to manage the maximum users with limited radio resource. Interference is one of the biggest hindrances to reach the goal. In this paper, being deep apprehension of the issue, an efficient dynamic channel borrowing scheme is proposed that ensures better Quality of Service (QoS) with interference declination. We propose that if channels are borrowed from adjacent cells, cell bifurcation will be introduced that ensures interference declination when the borrowed channels have same frequency band. We also propose a scheme that inactivates …

Radio Resource Management For Dynamic Channel Borrowing Scheme In Wireless Networks, Mohammad Arif Hossain, Shakil Ahmed, Mostafa Zaman Chowdhury
Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research
Provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) is the key concern for Radio Resource Management now-a-days. In this paper, an efficient dynamic channel borrowing architecture has been proposed that ensures better QoS. The proposed scheme lessens the problem of excessive overall call blocking probability without sacrificing bandwidth utilization. If a channel is borrowed from an adjacent cell and causes interference, in that case we also propose architecture that diminishes the interference problem. The numerical results show comparison between the proposed scheme and the conventional scheme before channel borrowing process. The results show a satisfactory performance that are in favor of the …

Source Apportionment Of Wastewater Using Bayesian Analysis Of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Daniel B. Blake
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses Bayesian analysis of fluorescence spectroscopy results to determine if wastewater from the Heber Valley Special Service District (HVSSD) lagoons in Midway, UT has seeped into the adjacent Provo River. This flow cannot be directly measured, but it is possible to use fluorescence spectroscopy to determine if there is seepage into the river.Fluorescence spectroscopy results of water samples obtained from HVSSD lagoons and from upstream and downstream in the Provo River were used to conduct this statistical analysis. The fluorescence 'fingerprints' for the upstream and lagoon samples were used to deconvolute the two sources in a downstream sample …
Effect Of High Percentages Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement On Mechanical Properties Of Cement-Treated Base Material, Jacob Clark Tolbert
Effect Of High Percentages Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement On Mechanical Properties Of Cement-Treated Base Material, Jacob Clark Tolbert
Theses and Dissertations
Full-depth reclamation (FDR) is an increasingly common technique that is used to rehabilitate flexible pavements. Implementation of FDR on rehabilitation projects produces several desirable benefits. However, these benefits are not fully realized due to the fact that state department of transportation specifications typically limit the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content of pavement base material to 50 percent. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of RAP content, cement content, temperature, curing time, curing condition, and moisture state on the strength, stiffness, and deformation characteristics of cement-treated base (CTB) mixtures containing high percentages of RAP.For this research, one …

Verifying Molecular Dynamics Using Dielectric Spectroscopy, Joshua Dee Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The electrical properties of proteins in solution are important for their structure and function. Computational biophysics studies of proteins need accurate parameters to ensure that numerical simulations match physical reality. Past work in this eld has compared the electrical properties of proteins obtained from dielectric spectroscopy to numerical simulations of proteins in water with adjustment of pKa values to try to capture the inevitable changes in electrical conformation that will occur in a complex structure such as a folded protein. However, fundamental veri cation of the charge parameters of the amino acid building blocks in common molecular dynamics software packages …

Development Of An Efficient Human Hepatocyte Culture Platform For Assessing Novel Therapeutic Efficacy Against Plasmodium Liver Parasites, Steven Patrick Maher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Malaria is a critical and global public health problem, affecting over 200 million people every year, resulting in over 500,000 deaths. A vaccine is not currently available and only one drug, primaquine, is effective against the dormant stages of Plasmodium vivax. Preclinical assessment of novel therapeutic drugs and vaccines is hampered by the lack of an in vitro liver model for P. falciparum and P. vivax. To provide a stable human hepatocyte-based culture platform for parasite development, we engineered a microfluidic bilayer device capable of both simple and complex culture methods, including perfusion and co-culture, to better understand the requirements …
An Investigation Of Project Delivery Methods Relating To Repetitive Commercial Construction, Donald A. Patterson
An Investigation Of Project Delivery Methods Relating To Repetitive Commercial Construction, Donald A. Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
The Design/Bid/Build (DBB) delivery method has historically been the most popular and the most effective means of determining the least cost for building a project based upon a set of construction documents. In recent years, however, other project delivery methods, including but limited to Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) and Design/Build (DB), have slowly taken a share of the construction market away from the DBB delivery method. The choice of delivery method that will produce the best value for an owner in the measurements of efficiency in quality, cost, and timeliness depends upon the type of project and the business culture …

Comparison Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Compatible Optical Detectors For In-Magnet Tissue Spectroscopy: Photodiodes Versus Silicon Photomultipliers, Fadi El-Ghussein, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue
Dartmouth Scholarship
Tissue spectroscopy inside the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system adds a significant value by measuring fast vascular hemoglobin responses or completing spectroscopic identification of diagnostically relevant molecules. Advances in this type of spectroscopy instrumentation have largely focused on fiber coupling into and out of the MRI; however, nonmagnetic detectors can now be placed inside the scanner with signal amplification performed remotely to the high field environment for optimized light detection. In this study, the two possible detector options, such as silicon photodiodes (PD) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), were systematically examined for dynamic range and wavelength performance. Results show that PDs …

Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Beach and nearshore surveys are conducted in a variety of ways, the most commonly used being the level-and-transit method; because it is inexpensive, time conducive and highly accurate. Specifically, beach surveys are conducted to better understand cross-shore, long-shore sediment transport processes, as well as to quantify volume changes, which are used to evaluate beach performance. In this study, a section of the beach on Sand Key, FL was surveyed using rod-and-transit. In addition to the commonly used linear data analysis, a non-linear analysis was conducted using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines).
Survey data was collected within a short time window …

Creating Total Value Engineering Through Combining Design For Manufacturing And Design For Six Sigma Constructs, David Ryan Christensen
Creating Total Value Engineering Through Combining Design For Manufacturing And Design For Six Sigma Constructs, David Ryan Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
The modern manufacturing world has been driven to compete in a more international and interconnected system. This has led to increased focus upon frameworks and architectures to guarantee quality, high market acceptance, and reduce cost. Modern manufacturing design processes evolved largely from Henry Ford at Ford Motor Company, and Alfred Sloan at General Motors. Their structures embody two different focuses on quality and value engineering which have influenced many recent design frameworks. In the 1970s a heavy emphasis was placed upon Design for Manufacturing, which uses group technology, commonality of processes, and continual focus to reduce part count. Some companies …
Design And Analysis Of Receiver Systems In Satellite Communications And Uav Navigation Radar, Matthew Robertson Morin
Design And Analysis Of Receiver Systems In Satellite Communications And Uav Navigation Radar, Matthew Robertson Morin
Theses and Dissertations
The design of a low cost electronically steered array feed (ESAF) is implemented and tested. The ESAF demonstrated satellite tracking capabilities over four degrees. The system was compared to a commercial low-noise block downconverter (LNBF) and was able to receive the signal over a wider angle than the commercial system. Its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance was poor, but a proof of concept for a low cost ESAF used for tracking is demonstrated. Two compact low profile dual circularly polarized (CP) reflector feed antenna designs are also analyzed. One of the designs is a passive antenna dipole array over an electromagnetic …
Forecasting Corrosion Of Steel In Concrete Introducing Chloride Threshold Dependence On Steel Potential, Andrea Nathalie Sanchez
Forecasting Corrosion Of Steel In Concrete Introducing Chloride Threshold Dependence On Steel Potential, Andrea Nathalie Sanchez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Corrosion initiates in reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments when the chloride ion concentration at the surface of an embedded steel reinforcing bar exceeds the chloride corrosion threshold (CT) value. The value of CT is generally assumed to have a conservative fixed value ranging from 0.2% to - 0.5 % of chloride ions by weight of cement. However, extensive experimental investigations confirmed that CT is not a fixed value and that the value of CT depends on many variables. Among those, the potential of passive steel embedded in concrete is a key influential factor on the value of CT …
