Conflict Management And Model Consistency In Multi-User Cad, Ammon Ikaika Hepworth
Conflict Management And Model Consistency In Multi-User Cad, Ammon Ikaika Hepworth
Theses and Dissertations
The NSF Center for e-Design, Brigham Young University (BYU) site has re-architected Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, enabling multiple users to concurrently create, modify and view the same CAD part or assembly. This technology allows engineers, designers and manufacturing personnel to simultaneously contribute to the design of a part or assembly in real time, enabling parallel work environments within the CAD system. Multi-user systems are only as robust and efficient as their methods for managing conflicts and preserving model consistency. Conflicts occur in multi-user CAD when multiple users interoperate with the same or dependent geometry. Some conflicts can lead to model …

First-Principles Study Of 180⁰ Domain Walls In Batio₃: Mixed Bloch-Néel-Ising Character, Menglei Li, Yijia Gu, Yi Wang, Long-Qing Chen, Wenhui Duan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The 180⁰ ferroelectric domain walls (FDWs) have long been regarded as purely Ising type in ferroelectrics, but recent theoretical works suggested that they can also have Néel- and/or Bloch-like rotations. Using a combination of first-principles calculations with phase-field simulations, we studied the 180⁰ FDWs on different crystallographic planes in prototypical ferroelectric perovskite BaTiO3. The polarization profiles of 180 FDWs on (100) and (410) planes revealed that the (100)- and (410)-FDWs both exhibit Néel-like character besides their intrinsic Ising character, while the (410)-FDW also simultaneously shows a Bloch-like oblique of ~6 nm, as a consequence of the deviation of …
Learning From Earthquakes: 2014 Napa Valley Earthquake Reconnaissance Report, Erica Fischer
Learning From Earthquakes: 2014 Napa Valley Earthquake Reconnaissance Report, Erica Fischer
Lyles School of Civil Engineering Graduate Student Reports
Structural damage was observed during reconnaissance after the 2014 South Napa Earthquake, and included damage to wine storage and fermentation tanks, collapse of wine storage barrel racks, unreinforced masonry building partial or full collapse, and residential building damage. This type of damage is not unique to the South Napa Earthquake, and was observed after other earthquakes such as the 1977 San Juan Earthquake, and the 2010 Maule Earthquake. Previous research and earthquakes have demonstrated the seismic performance of cylindrical fluid-filled tanks is controlled by both the tank and the sloshing motion of the liquid inside. Unlike building structures, steel tanks …

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Colonoscopy, the traditional procedure for detecting colorectal cancer, is very effective. It does have downsides, however - it is invasive, uncomfortable for the patient, and not available to some patients with certain conditions. Virtual colonoscopy has been developed in order to address these issues. A virtual colonoscopy (VC) is a non-invasive method for performing a colonoscopy by using medical imaging data to create a virtual representation of the colon. Previous virtual colonoscopy methods include fly-through, fly-over, flattening, and the unfolded cube method. Fly-through moves the camera through …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to determine the differences in heat transfer enhancement of poly alpha olefin oil after the addition of two types of carbon coated nanoparticles, specifically carbon coated cobalt and carbon coated copper nanoparticles. The carbon shell allows for the nanoparticles to be homogenously dispersed in the oil and remain stable throughout the experimental procedure. The nanofluids were prepared in concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt%. A constant surface heat flux testing rig is used to determine the heat transfer coefficients of the base fluids and the nanofluids. Inlet temperatures to the heat transfer section …
Self-Supported Printed Multi-Layer Capacitors, Michael James Joyce
Self-Supported Printed Multi-Layer Capacitors, Michael James Joyce
Masters Theses
The increasing demand for miniaturized electronic devices has increased the need for rechargeable micro-power sources. Although lithium and lithium ion batteries have been utilized in these applications since the late 1990s, other energy harvesting technologies, such as thermal, mechanical, and solar, are now being used to augment batteries to enable systems to be self-powered. However, the lifetime of any battery is finite, which may be a major problem when the application is in a permanent structure or medical implant device. For power or significant energy storage applications, printed multilayer capacitors or supercapacitors are being explored as an enhancement, or replacement …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis it is first analyzed the effect that different Average Burst Length, buffer size or number of ports have on the performance in terms of packet loss ratio on shared memory network switches using Complete Sharing as baseline for the memory allocation scheme. Three different shared memory allocation schemes - Sharing with a Minimum Allocation (SMA), Sharing with Maximum Queue lengths (SMXQ), and Dynamic Threshold (DT) - are then analyzed under varied traffic conditions in order to determine the best configuration for each tested scenario. Having determined the best configuration for each individual scheme under all the tested …
Lab-Scale Experiment For Assessing The Effect Of Resuspension And Oxygenation On Sediment Oxygen Demand, Grace Richardson
Lab-Scale Experiment For Assessing The Effect Of Resuspension And Oxygenation On Sediment Oxygen Demand, Grace Richardson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of resuspending lake sediment for different time periods in a lab-scale tank under both oxic and anoxic conditions on sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and other related sediment properties. This lab-scale study was conducted as a first step to determine if a proposed method for reducing SOD by treating sediments in lakes and reservoirs is feasible. SOD is a critical process responsible for the formation of anoxic hypolimnia in lakes and reservoirs. A reduction in SOD may delay or eliminate the onset of anoxia in the hypolimnia, preventing adverse ecosystem effects and improving water quality and …

Glioblastoma and neuroblastoma are both solid-form tumors. Glioblastomas primarily reside in the brain, while neuroblastomas are found in the sympathetic nervous system. Both glioblastoma and neuroblastoma re classified as orphan diseases, which affect less than 200,000 individuals a year. Over the course of 5 years, 40% of patients diagnosed with neuroblastomas and only 6% of patients diagnosed will glioblastomas will be living.73,74. Glioblastoma and neuroblastoma tumors possess a gene known as MGMT. MGMT is used by tumors as a DNA repair mechanism, which increases the likelihood these tumors will become resistant to traditional drug therapies.28,37 Other pathways, …
Synthesis Of Silicon Carbide Fibers From Polycarbosilane By Electrospinning Method, Yuan Yue
Synthesis Of Silicon Carbide Fibers From Polycarbosilane By Electrospinning Method, Yuan Yue
All Theses
Silicon carbide (SiC) is widely used in many fields due to its unique properties. Bulk SiC normally has a flexural strength of 500 - 550 MPa, a Vickers hardness of ~27 GPa, a Young's modulus of 380 - 430 GPa, and a thermal conductivity of approximately 120 W/mK. SiC fibers are of great interest since they are the good candidates for reinforcing ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) because of the weavability and high temperature strength of about two to three GPa at about 1000 °C. Silicon carbide fibers have been synthesized from polycarbosilane (PCS) with ~25 μm diameter using the melt-spinning …

The Impact Of Block Scheduling And Release Time On Operating Room Efficiency, Rebecca Weiss
All Theses
Planning for sufficient surgical capacity at a hospital requires that many tactical and operational decisions be made before the day of surgery. Typically, blocks of time in operating rooms (ORs) are assigned and specific surgical cases are placed in rooms. The hospital monitors utilization to determine the schedule's effectiveness in balancing the risk of overtime with idle time. In this thesis, we will examine how adjusting schedule risk ratios and penalty values, and providing shared, open posting time affected the hospital's ability to identify an efficient but high quality and low cost block schedule. The proposed schedules were tested by …
Effects Of Natural Organic Matter On Contaminant Removal By Superfine Powdered Activated Carbon Coupled With Microfiltration Membranes, Mengfei Li
All Theses
Hybrid activated carbon/membrane systems are used in drinking water treatment for their significant capability of removing synthetic organic contaminants (SOCs) or taste-and-odor compounds along with particles. Preliminary data showed that decreasing the carbon particle size and creating superfine powdered activated carbon (S-PAC) removed phenanthrene and atrazine better than adsorbents with larger particle size in the presence of competitive adsorbents like natural organic matter (NOM). NOM is present in all natural water from degradation of terrestrial biomass which leaches from soil into a water source. Water treatment facilities target the removal of NOM because they are precursors to disinfection by-products formed …
Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi
Design And Simulation Of A Nerve Tracer System For Vagotomy Surgery, Guneet Bedi
All Theses
The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in the human body. It is associated with a plethora of functions one of them being acid secretion inside the stomach to aid in digestion. The cerebrum part of the brain initiates an action potential that is propagated along the vagus nerve to the parietal cells that secrete acid. In some cases, the cerebrum over stimulates the parietal cells leading to excess acid secretion, more than is needed for the digestion process. This excess acid leads to the formation of open sores along the stomach lining called gastric/peptic ulcers. In …

Modeling And Analyzing The Impact Of Advanced Technologies On Transit Performance Measures In Arterial Corridors, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Wei Feng
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Transportation and transit agencies have implemented advanced technologies like transit signal priority (TSP) and Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) to reduce travel times and improve reliability. However, due to the lack of detailed empirical data, the joint impact of these factors and improvement strategies on bus travel time has not been studied at the stop-to-stop segment level. With the aim of assessing the performance of an existing TSP/SCATS system, this study had access to a unique set of high-resolution bus and traffic signal data. Novel algorithms and performance measures to measure TSP performance are proposed. Results indicate that a …

Exploration Of The Validity Of The Two-Dimensional Sagittal Plane Standing Long Jump Model, Lauren Hickox
Masters Theses
Most previous standing long jump studies have been based on the assumption of two-dimensional sagittal plane motion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of this assumption. Standing long jump trials were collected using six adult male subjects. Each subject stood with a foot on each of two force plates and performed eight standing long jumps for maximal distance. Inverse dynamics analyses were performed for the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) models and the joint moments, powers, and work values were compared. The differences between these models with respect to the validity of the common planar jumping …

Acoustic Scattering And Radiation Response Of Circular Hexagonal And Auxetic Honeycomb Shell Structures, Vaibhav Iyer
Acoustic Scattering And Radiation Response Of Circular Hexagonal And Auxetic Honeycomb Shell Structures, Vaibhav Iyer
All Theses
Sandwich panels with honeycomb cores are used in many engineering applications because of their high strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation and sound transmission loss characteristics. Previous studies indicate that such sandwich structures with auxetic honeycomb cores (negative in-plane Poisson's ratio) can have a higher sound transmission loss compared to a regular hexagonal honeycomb core structure. In this study, sound scattering and acoustic radiation characteristics of sandwich structures with hexagonal and auxetic cores arranged in a circular pattern interacting with exterior acoustic domains of both air and water have been investigated using finite element analysis. A novel in-plane honeycomb geometry …

All Theses
As the developing world is industrializing and people migrate to cities, the need for infrastructure is growing quickly and concrete has become one of the most widely used construction materials. One poor construction practice observed widely across the developing world is the minimal use of reinforcement for concrete structures due to the high cost of steel. As a low-cost, high-performance material with good mechanical properties, bamboo has been investigated as an alternative to steel for reinforcing concrete. The goal of this research is to add to the knowledge base of bamboo reinforced concrete (BRC) by investigating a unique stirrup design …
Hollow Massive Timber Panels: A High-Performance, Long-Span Alternative To Cross Laminated Timber, William Graham Montgomery
Hollow Massive Timber Panels: A High-Performance, Long-Span Alternative To Cross Laminated Timber, William Graham Montgomery
All Theses
Since the development of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), there has been a surge in interest in massive timber buildings. Furthermore, recent conceptual and feasibility designs of massive timber towers of 30 or more stories indicate that performance of mass timber structural elements can compete with other building materials in the commercial industry (MGB Architecture and Design et al.). However, in order for massive timber to penetrate the commercial market even further, a solution is needed for long-span massive timber floor systems. Unfortunately, CLT falls short in this area and is unable to span long distances. The hollow massive timber (HMT) …

Internet has undoubtedly become a major and effective medium for advertising, and it will soon replace traditional advertising media. Online advertising ecosystem is consisted of thousands of agents, which can be divided into three types: users, advertisers and publishers. Each type of the agents plays an important role in the ecosystem. However, it is generally very difficult to model such a complex and large-scale system, not to mention the design of suitable strategies for the ecosystem. On the other side, replicator-mutator (RM) dynamics combine tools from evolutionary dynamics of populations, complex networks, and control theory to study evolution of behavior …

Portland cement pervious concrete (PCPC) is increasingly gaining attention as a preferred material in selected pavement applications. This concrete has several unique features, which makes it an environment-friendly construction material. Its porous structure allows precipitation to infiltrate directly into the ground. This reduces accumulation of a large amount of storm water in areas of heavy storms and recharges the ground water system, thus reducing the need for expensive storm water collection and treatment systems. Also, it allows the pollutants on pavement surfaces such as motor oil, etc. to drain into the subsurface be treated by native microbes in the soil, …
Building Envelope Failure Assessment Of Residential Developments Subjected To Hurricane Wind Hazards, James Grayson
Building Envelope Failure Assessment Of Residential Developments Subjected To Hurricane Wind Hazards, James Grayson
All Dissertations
An unfortunate global precedent has been set by hurricane wind hazard events that illustrate the importance of building resilient coastal communities. Although community resilience is heavily dependent upon the socioeconomic response of the community before, during, and after a hazard event, it is also dependent on the vulnerability of the community to a disaster. Therefore, one way that structural engineers can assist communities in becoming more resilient is to investigate and implement methods that mitigate the 'initial shock' experienced by a residential development subjected to a hazard event. The focus of this research was to develop a mechanics-based building envelope …

Electrochemical capacitors store electrical energy physically in the electrical double layers at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. In spite of their high power density and extraordinary cyclability, the widespread deployment of electrochemical capacitors is limited by their moderate energy density. The current surge in interest in electrochemical capacitors is driven by recent breakthroughs in developing novel electrode and electrolyte materials. In particular, electrodes featuring sub-nanometer pores and room-temperature ionic liquids are promising materials for next-generation electrochemical capacitors. To realize the full potential of these materials, a basic understanding of the charge storage mechanisms in them is essential. In this Dissertation, using atomistic …
