Application Of Multivariate Analysis Techniques To Safeguards Of The Electrochemical Treatment Of Used Nuclear Fuel, Devin Rappleye, Sang-Mun Jeong, Michael Simpson

Faculty Publications

Several countries have shown interest in developing the electrochemical treatment of used nuclear fuel (UNF), commonly termed pyroprocessing. From a proliferation perspective, an advantage of pyroprocessing is its inability to isolate pure plutonium. However, because plutonium is present in the process, it needs to be effectively safeguarded to protect against diversion of plutonium-containing materials that could be post-processed elsewhere. The most complicated unit to safeguard in the process is the electrorefiner where UNF is chemically separated into several material entities. Molten LiCl–KCl serves as the electrolyte into which actinides (including uranium and plutonium), rare earths, and other active metals from …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient for agriculture, but is also responsible for surface water enrichment that leads to algal growth. While P loading to surface waters has traditionally been thought to occur from surface runoff, contributions from subsurface transport can also be significant. Subsurface transport through gravelly soils in the Ozark ecoregion can have a significant, yet poorly-documented effect on P movement to groundwater.

Long-term P modeling was performed in HYDRUS-1D and 2D using data collected from short-term plot experiments featuring gravelly soils. Seven model levels were developed to illustrate a wide variety of laboratory and field conditions. Calibration …

Analysis Of Vibration Generated By The Rubbing Of Flat Surfaces, Zahrul Fuadi

Makara Journal of Technology

Among the phenomena that occur as a result of contact between two surfaces is friction sound, in which surface roughness is of great importance. In this study, the parameter of contact stiffness is used to explain the frequency characteristic of vibration generated by the rubbing of flat surfaces under a small load. A 3-disk configuration rubbing method was used, which provides a unique characteristic of the system's frequency response function containing specific information about the rubbing vibrations. It is shown that the peak frequency of the rubbing vibration can be explained by using a two-degrees-of-freedom model incorporating the parameter of …

Proof Of Concept Test For Dual-Axis Resonant Phase-Locked Excitation (Phlex) Fatigue Testing Method For Wind Turbine Blades, Jenna Austin Beckwith Dec 2014

Proof Of Concept Test For Dual-Axis Resonant Phase-Locked Excitation (Phlex) Fatigue Testing Method For Wind Turbine Blades, Jenna Austin Beckwith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The installed capacity of wind turbines has grown steadily for the past decade with wind energy now providing 3.6-percent of the U.S.’s electricity supply [13]. This trend can be attributed to advancements in wind turbine technology and the ability to increase wind turbine sizes. As wind turbines grow in size, so do the loads experienced by the turbine. One of the most significant load increases is in the lead-lag direction of the wind turbine blades. The increase in lead-lag load is due to the increase in weight of the larger blades. Current wind turbine blades have lead-lag and flapwise loads …

Generalized Framework For Similarity Measure Of Time Series, Hongsheng Yin, Honggang Qi, Jingwen Xu, William N. N. Hung, Xiaoyu Song

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Currently, there is no definitive and uniform description for the similarity of time series, which results in difficulties for relevant research on this topic. In this paper, we propose a generalized framework to measure the similarity of time series. In this generalized framework, whether the time series is univariable or multivariable, and linear transformed or nonlinear transformed, the similarity of time series is uniformly defined using norms of vectors or matrices. The definitions of the similarity of time series in the original space and the transformed space are proved to be equivalent. Furthermore, we also extend the theory on similarity of …
