Near Optimal Event-Based Control Of Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems In Affine Form With Measured Input And Output Data, Avimanyu Sahoo, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, an event-based near optimal control of uncertain nonlinear discrete time systems is presented by using input-output data and approximate dynamic programming (ADP). The nonlinear system dynamics in affine form are transformed into an input-output form. Then, three neural networks (NN) with event sampled input-output vector are used, namely, the identifier NN to relax the knowledge of the system dynamics, a critic NN to approximate the value function which is the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi Bellman (HJB) equation, and an actor NN to approximate the optimal control policy, in an online manner without utilizing value or policy iterations. …

Sub-Diffusive Scattering Parameter Maps Recovered Using Wide-Field High-Frequency Structured Light Imaging, Stephen C. Kanick, David M. Mcclatchy, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Jonathan T. Elliott, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

This study investigates the hypothesis that structured light reflectance imaging with high spatial frequency patterns (fx) can be used to quantitatively map the anisotropic scattering phase function distribution (P(θs)) in turbid media. Monte Carlo simulations were used in part to establish a semi-empirical model of demodulated reflectance (Rd) in terms of dimensionless scattering (μ′sf−1x) and γ, a metric of the first two moments of the P(θs) distribution. Experiments completed in tissue-simulating phantoms showed that simultaneous analysis of Rd spectra sampled at multiple f …

Finite Horizon Stochastic Optimal Control Of Nonlinear Two-Player Zero-Sum Games Under Communication Constraint, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the finite horizon stochastic optimal control of nonlinear two-player zero-sum games, referred to as Nonlinear Networked Control Systems (NNCS) two-player zero-sum game, between control and disturbance input players in the presence of unknown system dynamics and a communication network with delays and packet losses is addressed by using neuro dynamic programming (NDP). The overall objective being to find the optimal control input while maximizing the disturbance attenuation. First, a novel online neural network (NN) identifier is introduced to estimate the unknown control and disturbance coefficient matrices which are needed in the generation of optimal control input. Then, …

Shock Pulse Filtering Evaluation On Package Size And Cost, Matthew P. Daum Ph.D. Sep 2014

Shock Pulse Filtering Evaluation On Package Size And Cost, Matthew P. Daum Ph.D.

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

Distribution packaging design often relies on cushion curves to determine required material thickness needed for product protection during shipment. The material thickness chosen based on cushion curves establishes overall package size, a key determiner of logistics costs. Cushion curves are constructed by dropping a mass onto a cushion, and interpreting the resulting shock pulse deceleration. The reported deceleration can be highly influenced by applying a “filter” to the shock pulse, a useful standar d prac - tice that removes unwanted high frequency elements superimposed on top of the basic shock pulse shape. Standard test methods for generating cushion curves generally …

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar Sep 2014

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we tackle three different problems, all related to optimization techniques for inference and classification of genetic profiles. First, we extend the deterministic Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) framework to the probabilistic case (PNMF). We apply the PNMF algorithm to cluster and classify DNA microarrays data. The proposed PNMF is shown to outperform the deterministic NMF and the sparse NMF algorithms in clustering stability and classification accuracy. Second, we propose SMURC: Small-sample MUltivariate Regression with Covariance estimation. Specifically, we consider a high dimension low sample-size multivariate regression problem that accounts for correlation of the response variables. We show that, …

Correspondence Of Electroencephalography And Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Sensitivities To The Cerebral Cortex Using A High-Density Layout, Paolo Giacometti, Solomon G. Diamond

Dartmouth Scholarship

This study investigates the correspondence of the cortical sensitivity of electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). EEG forward model sensitivity to the cerebral cortex was calculated for 329 EEG electrodes following the 10-5 EEG positioning system using a segmented structural magnetic resonance imaging scan of a human subject. NIRS forward model sensitivity was calculated for the same subject using 156 NIRS source-detector pairs selected from 32 source and 32 detector optodes positioned on the scalp using a subset of the 10-5 EEG positioning system. Sensitivity correlations between colocalized NIRS source-detector pair groups and EEG channels yielded R=0.46± …

Verifying And Validating Multirobot Missions, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald C. Arkin, Shu Jiang, Dagon Harrington, Tsung-Ming Liu

Faculty Publications

We have developed an approach that can be used by mission designers to determine whether or not a performance guarantee for their mission software, when carried out under the uncertain conditions of a real-world environment, will hold within a threshold probability. In this paper we demonstrate its utility for verifying multirobot missions, in particular a bounding overwatch mission.

A Catalog Of While Loop Specification Patterns, Aditi Barua, Yoonsik Cheon Sep 2014

A Catalog Of While Loop Specification Patterns, Aditi Barua, Yoonsik Cheon

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This document provides a catalog of while loop patterns along with their skeletal specifications. The specifications are written in a functional form known as intended functions. The catalog can be used to derive specifications of while loops by first matching the loops to the cataloged patterns and then instantiating the skeletal specifications of the matched patterns. Once their specifications are formulated and written, the correctness of while loops can be proved rigorously or formally using the functional program verification technique in which a program is viewed as a mathematical function from one program state to another.

A Control-Chart Based Method For Solder Joint Crack Detection, Jianbiao Pan Sep 2014

A Control-Chart Based Method For Solder Joint Crack Detection, Jianbiao Pan

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Many researchers have used different failure criteria in published solder joint reliability studies. Since the reported timeto-failure would be different if different failure criteria were used, it would be difficult to compare the reported reliability life of solder joints from one study to another. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of failure criteria on the reported thermal fatigue life and determine which failure criterion could detect failure sooner. First, the application of the control-chart-based method in a thermal cycling reliability study is described. The reported time-to-failure data were then compared based on four different failure criteria: …

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Air and ground crews transfer a significant amount of jet fuel, and as a result of transfers, breathe its volatile emission from residues. Working on the flight line also exposes maintainers to exhaust from the jet fuel as engines are tested or run before and after flight. Since little is known concerning level of exposure and the corresponding biological response associated with human jet fuel exposure, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics analysis of human urine was utilized for characterization of metabolite profiles of flight line personnel for potential biomarker discovery. This project was a collaborative research effort between the US …

Computational Modeling Of Pathophysiologic Responses To Exercise In Fontan Patients, Ethan Kung, James C. Perry, Christopher Davis, Francesco Migliavacca, Giancarlo Pennati, Alessandro Giardini, Tain-Yen Hsia, Alison Marsden Sep 2014

Computational Modeling Of Pathophysiologic Responses To Exercise In Fontan Patients, Ethan Kung, James C. Perry, Christopher Davis, Francesco Migliavacca, Giancarlo Pennati, Alessandro Giardini, Tain-Yen Hsia, Alison Marsden

Publications

Reduced exercise capacity is nearly universal among Fontan patients. Although many factors have emerged as possible contributors, the degree to which each impacts the overall hemodynamics is largely unknown. Computational modeling provides a means to test hypotheses of causes of exercise intolerance via precisely controlled virtual experiments and measurements. We quantified the physiological impacts of commonly encountered, clinically relevant dysfunctions introduced to the exercising Fontan system via a previously developed lumped-parameter model of Fontan exercise. Elevated pulmonary arterial pressure was observed in all cases of dysfunction, correlated with lowered cardiac output (CO), and often mediated by elevated atrial pressure. Pulmonary …

Energy Consumption Reduction Strategies For Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles With Connected Vehicle Technology In An Urban Environment, Parth Bhavsar, Yiming He, Mashrur Chowdhury, Ryan Fries, Andrew Shealy

Publications

Automobile manufacturers have introduced plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to reduce fossil fuel consumption. This paper details three optimization strategies that can be utilized to further minimize energy consumption of PHEVs through an information exchange between PHEVs and infrastructure agents supported by the connected vehicle technology (CVT). While an earlier research by the authors focused on a freeway scenario, this study developed strategies for an urban scenario in which frequent ‘stop-and-go’ conditions exist. Three strategies were considered in this study based on different types of information availability using CVT; only signal timing information was available in Strategy One, only headway …

Flax Fibre: Innovation And Change In The Early Neolithic; A Technological And Material Perspective, Susanna Harris Sep 2014

Flax Fibre: Innovation And Change In The Early Neolithic; A Technological And Material Perspective, Susanna Harris

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Flax (Linum sp.) was one of the first domestic plants in Neolithic Europe, providing a potential cultivable source of fibres for the first farmers. As the plant provides both oil and fibre, it is a matter of enquiry as to whether the plant was first domesticated for its seeds or stem. Through examining new data collected by the EUROEVOL Project, UCL it is possible to chart the earliest archaeobotanical evidence for flax species in Europe. This provides the basis on which to consider the origin of fibres from the flax plant (linen) as a basis for change and innovation …

Perceptually Salient Haptic Rendering For Enhancing Kinesthetic Perception In Virtual Environments, Ravikiran B. Singapogu, Christopher C. Pagano, Timothy C. Burg, Paul G. Dorn, Ron Zacharia, Dongbin Lee

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Kinesthetic or dynamic touch involves the use of muscle sensitivity to perceive mechanical properties of objects that are gripped in the hand and wielded in space. Many previous studies with real objects have investigated the mechanical properties that underlie human haptic perception. Few virtual environments, however, have systematically incorporated the relevant mechanical parameters underlying kinesthetic perception. In this study, the ability of a haptic device to render kinesthetic information regarding the inertial properties of virtual objects was tested. Results suggest that users were able to perceive length of rendered virtual objects via the haptic device. Further, users can be trained …

Serious Fun: Using Toys To Demonstrate Fluid Mechanics Principles, Camilla M. Saviz, Said Shakerin Sep 2014

Serious Fun: Using Toys To Demonstrate Fluid Mechanics Principles, Camilla M. Saviz, Said Shakerin

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Many students have owned or seen fluids toys in which two immiscible fluids within a closed container can be tilted to generate waves. These types of inexpensive and readily available toys are fun to play with, but they are also useful for provoking student learning about fluid properties or complex fluid behavior, including drop formation and coalescence. Including these toys in a class or lab with a companion exercise allows students to use observation and inductive reasoning to infer principles-all while having fun.

An Efficient Certificateless Encryption For Secure Data Sharing In Public Clouds, Seung-Hyun Seo, Mohamed Yoosuf Mohamed Nabeel, Xiaoyu Ding, Elisa Bertino Sep 2014

An Efficient Certificateless Encryption For Secure Data Sharing In Public Clouds, Seung-Hyun Seo, Mohamed Yoosuf Mohamed Nabeel, Xiaoyu Ding, Elisa Bertino

Cyber Center Publications

We propose a mediated certificateless encryption scheme without pairing operations for securely sharing sensitive information in public clouds. Mediated certificateless public key encryption (mCL-PKE) solves the key escrow problem in identity based encryption and certificate revocation problem in public key cryptography. However, existing mCL-PKE schemes are either inefficient because of the use of expensive pairing operations or vulnerable against partial decryption attacks. In order to address the performance and security issues, in this paper, we first propose a mCL-PKE scheme without using pairing operations. We apply our mCL-PKE scheme to construct a practical solution to the problem of sharing sensitive …

Effect Of Soil Sampling Density And Landscape Features On Soil Test Phosphorus, Donald J. Stamper, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark A. Purschwitz Sep 2014

Effect Of Soil Sampling Density And Landscape Features On Soil Test Phosphorus, Donald J. Stamper, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark A. Purschwitz

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Organic and/or inorganic fertilizers are used to promote crop growth yet the rate of fertilizer application is often based on the nitrogen needs of the crop and not the phosphorus needs, especially when utilizing animal manures with low N-to-P ratios as compared to plant N:P uptake. Because of this, soil phosphorus levels in many areas of the world are in excess of crop needs. Excessive levels of phosphorus in water bodies such as streams and lakes can result in a condition known as eutrophication. With eutrophication, nutrients promote algal growth which in turn decreases dissolved oxygen levels in receiving water …

Diesel use on farms in the United States has remained relatively constant since 1985, decreasing slightly in 2009, which may be attributed to price increases and the economic recession. During this time, the United States’ harvested area also has remained relatively constant at roughly 300 million acres. In 2010, farm diesel use was 5.4% of the total United States diesel use. Crops accounting for an estimated 65% of United States farm diesel use include corn, soybean, wheat, hay, and alfalfa, respectively, based on harvested crop area and a recent analysis of estimated fuel use by crop. Diesel use in these …

Transmit Designs For The Mimo Broadcast Channel With Statistical Csi, Yongpeng Wu, Shi Jin, Xiqi Gao, Matthew R. Mckay, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel with statistical channel state information available at the transmitter. The so-called linear assignment operation is employed, and necessary conditions are derived for the optimal transmit design under general fading conditions. Based on this, we introduce an iterative algorithm to maximize the linear assignment weighted sum-rate by applying a gradient descent method. To reduce complexity, we derive an upper bound of the linear assignment achievable rate of each receiver, from which a simplified closed-form expression for a near-optimal linear assignment matrix is derived. This reveals an interesting construction analogous to that of dirty-paper coding. …

Stochastic Optimal Design For Unknown Linear Discrete-Time System Zero-Sum Games In Input-Output Form Under Communication Constraints, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan, F. L. Lewis Sep 2014

Stochastic Optimal Design For Unknown Linear Discrete-Time System Zero-Sum Games In Input-Output Form Under Communication Constraints, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan, F. L. Lewis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, stochastic optimal strategy for unknown linear discrete-time system quadratic zero-sum games in input-output form with communication imperfections such as network-induced delays and packet losses, otherwise referred to as networked control system (NCS) zero-sum games, relating to the H∞ optimal control problem is solved in a forward-in-time manner. First, the linear discrete-time zero sum state space representation is transformed into a linear NCS in the state space form after incorporating random delays and packet losses and then into the input-output form. Subsequently, the stochastic optimal approach, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), is introduced which estimates the …

Corrosion Resistance Of A Sand Particle-Modified Enamel Coating Applied To Smooth Steel Bars, Fujian Tang, Genda Chen, Richard K. Brow, Michael L. Koenigstein

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The protective performance of a sand particle-modified enamel coating on reinforcing steel bars was evaluated in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Seven percentages of sand particles by weight were investigated: 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 50% and 70%. The phase composition of the enamel coating and sand particles were determined with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the sand particle-modified enamel coating were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD tests revealed three phases of sand particles: SiO2, CaCO3 and MgCO3. SEM images demonstrated that the …

Hybrid Silicon Mode-Locked Laser With Improved Rf Power By Impedance Matching, Bassem M. Tossoun Sep 2014

Hybrid Silicon Mode-Locked Laser With Improved Rf Power By Impedance Matching, Bassem M. Tossoun

Master's Theses

The mode-locked laser diode (MLLD) finds a lot of use in applications such as ultra high-speed data processing and sampling, large-capacity optical fiber communications based on optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) systems. Integrating mode-locked lasers on silicon makes way for highly integrated silicon based photonic communication devices. The mode-locked laser being used in this thesis was built with Hybrid Silicon technology. This technology, developed by UC Santa Barbara in 2006, introduced the idea of wafer bonding a crystalline III- V layer to a Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate, making integrated lasers in silicon chips possible.

Furthermore, all mode-locked lasers produce phase noise, which …

Probabilistic Fatigue Design Of Shaft For Bending And Torsion, Edward Osakue Sep 2014

Probabilistic Fatigue Design Of Shaft For Bending And Torsion, Edward Osakue

Faculty Publications

The ever increasing demand for better and reliable mechanical systems necessitates the explicit consideration of reliability in the modeling and design of these systems. Design for reliability (DFR) has been receiving a great deal of attention for several years and companies are deploying resources to the design for reliability process because of the need to satisfy customers and reduce warranty costs. In traditional or deterministic design, safety or design factors are usually subjectively assigned in product design so as to assure reliability. But this method of design does not provide a logical basis for addressing uncertainties, so the level of …

Design And Evaluation Of Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle Upper Stage Engine, Joseph R. Simmons Iii Sep 2014

Design And Evaluation Of Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle Upper Stage Engine, Joseph R. Simmons Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle, a modification to traditional engine architectures, is to find those missions and designs for which it has a competitive advantage over traditional upper stage engines such as the RL10. Previous work focused on developing an initial design to demonstrate the feasibility of the Dual-Expander Aerospike Nozzle. This research expanded the original cycle model in preparation for optimizing the engine's specific impulse and thrust-to-weight ratio. The changes to the model allowed automated parametric and optimization studies. Preliminary parametric studies varying oxidizer-to-fuel ratio, total mass flow, and chamber length showed significant improvements. Drawing on modeling …
