Nanocrystalline photocatalysts, prepared under ambient conditions using a microwave assisted syn-thesis, show indoor light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The zinc sulphide (ZnS) nanomaterials, prepared by a microwave assisted synthesis, are shown to be cubic blende structure with an average crystallite size of 4–6 nm. The anti-bacterial activ-ity of these nanomaterials is investigated under irradiation from a 60 W light bulb and photocatalytic activity is revealed to be due to the defects present in the crystal structure. The ZnS shows anti-bacterial action as both a bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal (88% reduction in the amount of …

Evaluation Of The Complementary Relationship Using Noah Land Surface Model And North American Regional Reanalysis (Narr) Data To Estimate Evapotranspiration In Semiarid Ecosystems, W. Thilini Jaksa, Venkataramana Sridhar, Justin L. Huntington, Mandar Khanal
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Estimating evapotranspiration using the complementary relationship can serve as a proxy to more sophisticated physically based approaches and can be used to better understand water and energy budget feedbacks. The authors investigated the existence of complementarity between actual evapotranspiration (ET) and potential ET (ETp) over natural vegetation in semiarid desert ecosystems of southern Idaho using only the forcing data and simulated fluxes obtained from Noah land surface model (LSM) and North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) data. To mitigate the paucity of long-term meteorological data, the Noah LSM-simulated fluxes and the NARR forcing data were used in the advection–aridity …
Joint Frequency-Domain Multiuser Turbo Equalization With Successive Interference Cancellation For Doubly-Selective Fading Channels, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Joint Frequency-Domain Multiuser Turbo Equalization With Successive Interference Cancellation For Doubly-Selective Fading Channels, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel multiuser separation and equalization scheme is proposed for single carrier wireless communication systems integrating frequency-domain (FD) multiuser turbo equalization (MUTE) and successive interference cancellation (SIC). The proposed iterative structure consists of multiple layers of detection, and at each layer the user with strongest power is processed by a frequency-domain multiuser equalizer to yield the soft extrinsic information on the coded bits of that user, which is delivered to a channel decoder after deinterleaving. The extrinsic information gleaned by the decoder is fed back to both the current and previous multiuser equalizers for the next iteration as a-priori information. …
Nanobubble Column Flotation For More Efficient Coal Recovery, Ahmed Sobhy, R. Honaker, D. Tao
Nanobubble Column Flotation For More Efficient Coal Recovery, Ahmed Sobhy, R. Honaker, D. Tao
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 μm for coal and 10 to 100 μm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal).
This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 μm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) have previously been considered for orthopedic applications. A Zn-GPC (BT 101) was compared to commercial GPCs (Fuji IX and Ketac Molar) which have a setting chemistry analogous to BT 101. Handling properties (working, Tw and setting, Ts times) for BT 101 were shorter than the commercial GPCs. BT 101 also had a higher setting exotherm (Sx - 34 °C) than the commercial GPCs (29 °C). The maximum strengths for BT 101, Fuji IX, and Ketac Molar were 75, 238, and 216 MPa (compressive, σc), and 34, 54, and 62 MPa (biaxial …

With growing interest in detachable adhesives, new materials are explored such as the types that employ elastomers, thermoplastics, and pressuresensitive polymers [1]. Generally, these adhesives produce substantial shear adhesion strengths but are considerably difficult to detach from surfaces. Commercial high strength adhesives make use of chemical interactions such as glues and permanently attach two surfaces. Subsequently, fabrication of dry adhesives with anisotropic force distributions has the potential in several applications such as tapes, fasteners, treads of wall-climbing robots, spiderman's suits, microelectronics, medical and space applications. High aspect ratio (AR) structures exhibit significant shear adhesion strength compared to ones with low …

In this paper, the intrinsic influence of nano-alumina particulate (Al2O3p) reinforcements on microstructure, microhardness, tensile properties, tensile fracture, cyclic stress-controlled fatigue, and final fracture behavior of a magnesium alloy is presented and discussed. The unreinforced magnesium alloy (AZ31) and the reinforced composite counterpart (AZ31/1.5 vol.% Al2O3) were manufactured by solidification processing followed by hot extrusion. The elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength of the nanoparticle-reinforced magnesium alloy were noticeably higher than the unreinforced counterpart. The ductility, quantified by elongation-to-failure, of the composite was observably lower than the unreinforced monolithic counterpart (AZ31). …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Several swine-specific microbial source tracking methods are based on PCR assays targeting Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences. The limited application of these assays can be explained by the poor understanding of their molecular diversity in fecal sources and environmental waters. In order to address this, we studied the diversity of 9,340 partial (>600bp in length) Bacteroidales 16S rRNA gene sequences from 13 fecal sources and nine feces-contaminated watersheds. The compositions of major Bacteroidales populations were analyzed to determine which host and environmental sequences were contributing to each group. This information allowed us to identify populations which were both exclusive …
Evaluation Of Time Series Techniques To Characterise Domestic Electricity Demand, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Evaluation Of Time Series Techniques To Characterise Domestic Electricity Demand, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Articles
This paper discusses time series approaches, often used by Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to forecast system demand, and applies them at an individual dwelling level. In particular, two techniques, Fourier transforms and Gaussian processes were evaluated and used to characterise individual household electricity demand. The performance of the characterisation approaches were evaluated based on Pearson correlation coefficient, descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests for electrical parameters: Total Electricity Consumption, Maximum Demand, Load Factor and Time of Use of maximum electricity demand. Finally, a number of time series tests were carried out to ensure certain properties remained between the original and …

Compliant Head Probe For Positioning Electroencephalography Electrodes And Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Optodes, Paolo Giacometti, Solomon G. Diamond
Dartmouth Scholarship
A noninvasive head probe that combines near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) for simultaneous measurement of neural dynamics and hemodynamics in the brain is presented. It is composed of a compliant expandable mechanism that accommodates a wide range of head size variation and an elastomeric web that maintains uniform sensor contact pressure on the scalp as the mechanism expands and contracts. The design is intended to help maximize optical and electrical coupling and to maintain stability during head movement. Positioning electrodes at the inion, nasion, central, and preauricular fiducial locations mechanically shapes the probe to place 64 NIRS optodes and …

Background
Fine wire electromyography (EMG) is commonly used for surgical decision making in equinovarus foot deformity. However, this invasive technique may have the unwanted effect of altering the gait of children with cerebral palsy (CP). The purpose of this study was to determine if fine wire insertion into the posterior tibialis muscle affects temporal-spatial parameters and hindfoot kinematics during gait in children with equinovarus secondary to hemiplegic CP.
Methods
12 children with hemiplegic CP who presented with an equinovarus foot (mean age 12.5 yrs, four right-sided, eight left-sided) were recruited. Temporal-spatial parameters and 3-D segmental foot and ankle kinematic gait …

Background: Blue-gray ovoids (B-GOs), a critical dermoscopic structure for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), offer an opportunity for automatic detection of BCC. Due to variation in size and color, B-GOs can be easily mistaken for similar structures in benign lesions. Analysis of these structures could afford accurate characterization and automatic recognition of B-GOs, furthering the goal of automatic BCC detection. This study utilizes a novel segmentation method to discriminate B-GOs from their benign mimics.
Methods: Contact dermoscopy images of 68 confirmed BCCs with B-GOs were obtained. Another set of 131 contact dermoscopic images of benign lesions possessing B-GO mimics provided a …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Shielding against electromagnetic phenomenon is an increasingly important consideration on a global scale. Solar storms, privacy from electronic surveillance, and EMP weapons are just a few of the concerns that must be addressed. Current methods of protection are subject to high cost and often limited in scalability. Conductive concrete is a promising solution to both of these limitations. By adding several simple materials to traditional concrete, a new type of constructible electromagnetic shield can be produced. The following will discuss the design and testing of conductive concrete for EM shielding as well as the results of those tests.

A Biomechanical Comparison Of Three Spondylolysis Repair Techniques In A Calf Spine Model, R. Roberto, B. Dezfuli, C. Deuel, S. Curtiss, S. Hazelwood
Biomedical Engineering
Summary of background data: Previous work has demonstrated the efficacy of lumbar pedicle screw hook rod (PSHR) techniques and the Buck screw in the stabilization of spondylolysis. The mechanical behavior of lower profile cervical implants used to create PSHR, hybrid cable plate constructs, and titanium miniplating has not previously been described.
Methods: Calf lumbar spines (L2-L6) were utilized for testing (n = 27). Intervertebral rotation was measured in the intact spines across the L4-5 segment before and after creation of bilateral pars interarticularis defects. Defects were then stabilized with one of three repair techniques, PSHR, miniplate, or …
Characterising Domestic Electricity Demand For Customer Load Profile Segmentation, Fintan Mcloughlin
Characterising Domestic Electricity Demand For Customer Load Profile Segmentation, Fintan Mcloughlin
Doctoral
The aim of this research was to characterise domestic electricity patterns of use on a diurnal, intra-daily and seasonal basis as a function of customer characteristics. This was done in order to produce a library of representative electricity demand load profiles that are characteristic of how households consume electricity. In so doing, a household’s electricity demand can be completely characterised based solely on their individual customer characteristics.
A number of different approaches were investigated as to their ability to characterise domestic electricity use. A statistical regression approach was evaluated which had the advantage of identifying key dwelling, occupant and appliance …

Monoclonal antibodies are used in numerous therapeutic and diagnostic applications; however, their efficacy is contingent on specificity and avidity. Here, we show that presentation of antibodies on the surface of nonspherical particles enhances antibody specificity as well as avidity toward their targets. Using spherical, rod-, and disk-shaped polystyrene nano- and microparticles and trastuzumab as the targeting antibody, we studied specific and nonspecific uptake in three breast cancer cell lines: BT-474, SK-BR-3, and MDA-MB-231. Rods exhibited higher specific uptake and lower nonspecific uptake in all cells compared with spheres. This surprising interplay between particle shape and antibodies originates from the unique …

Numerical Modeling Of Anti-Icing Using An Array Of Heated Synthetic Jets, Nikisha Maria Nagappan
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A novel approach to icing control using an array of thermally activated synthetic jet actuators (SJAs) embedded in a wedge surface subject to a super-cooled flow is investigated numerically. The effects of SJA actuation with and without jet heating on ice accretion are studied using the FENSAP-ICE software. It is shown that the heated actuating SJAs can lead to a significant reduction in the amount of ice accreted on the surface. Additional parametric studies on several icing and SJA parameters are analyzed for their influence on the amount of ice accretion.

Abrasion of mechanical components and fabrics by soil on Earth is typically minimized by the effects of atmosphere and water. Potentially abrasive particles lose sharp and pointed geometrical features through erosion. In environments where such erosion does not exist, such as the vacuum of the Moon, particles retain sharp geometries associated with fracturing of their parent particles by micrometeorite impacts. The relationship between hardness of the abrasive and that of the material being abraded is well understood, such that the abrasive ability of a material can be estimated as a function of the ratio of the hardness of the two …

We report the design, fabrication, and test of an InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD) for 950-1650 nm wavelength sensing applications. The APD is grown by molecular beam epitaxy on InP substrates from lattice-matched InGaAs and InAlAs alloys. Avalanche multiplication inside the APD occurs in a series of asymmetric gain stages whose layer ordering acts to enhance the rate of electron-initiated impact ionization and to suppress the rate of hole-initiated ionization when operated at low gain. The multiplication stages are cascaded in series, interposed with carrier relaxation layers in which the electric field is low, preventing avalanche feedback between stages. These measures …

Objectives And Constraints For Wind Turbine Optimization, Andrew Ning, Rick Damiani, Patrick Moriarty
Faculty Publications
Efficient extraction of wind energy is a complex multidisciplinary process. This paper examines common objectives used in wind turbine optimization problems. The focus is not on the specific optimized designs, but rather on understanding when certain objectives and constraints are necessary, and what their limitations are. Maximizing annual energy production, or even using sequential aero/structural optimization, is shown to be significantly suboptimal compared to integrated aero/structural metrics. Minimizing the ratio of turbine mass to annual energy production can be effective for fixed rotor diameter designs, as long as the tower mass is estimated carefully. For variable diameter designs, the predicted …
