Migration Grid #26, Stanton Hunter Mar 2013

Migration Grid #26, Stanton Hunter

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

This work is inspired by invisible sky grids formed by Ultra Violet (UV) light researchers discovered that guide Monarch butterflies on their migration from the mid-western United States to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico. I use terrestrial material, clay, to make something celestial. Earth, associated with mass and permanence, is translated into these shifting, ephemeral, and ethereal sky-forms. The work encompasses void more than object and the complex shadows they cast are immaterial. Together, the objects and shadows point to what can’t be seen, at least by the human eye.

Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina Mar 2013

Towards A “Cloud Curriculum” In Art And Science?, Roger Malina

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

Recently an email hit my desk from Paul Thomas in Australia with a proposal to work together on a “Cloud Curriculum for Art and Science”. I immediately agreed to collaborate. I don’t yet have a clue of what a cloud curriculum is, but what I do know is that we are ‘backing into the future’ in educational institutions and we desperately need a ‘cloud curriculum.’ We need to look over the ten year horizon. And in the emerging art-science field I doubt that the usual approach to curriculum development will work.

Getting Real About The E In Steam, James Catterall Mar 2013

Getting Real About The E In Steam, James Catterall

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

STEM and STEAM are in the news. Researchers and educators in my field (cognition, art, and creativity) argue reasons for adding the A to STEM. While I visit this below, my focus is elsewhere. In this brief essay, I want to explore the meaning and importance of the E appearing in both STEM and STEAM. What’s engineering doing in this mix? And what are some reasons for affirming the arts when the role of engineering is clarified?

In-Situ Condition Monitoring Of Components In Small Modular Reactors Using Process And Electrical Signature Analysis, Victor Lollar

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

Components in small modular reactors (SMRs) are located in a hazardous environment and must be monitored remotely. Electrical signature analysis (ESA) is a viable option for component monitoring as it can be implemented on-line away from the actual equipment. This research attempts to use both electrical signatures from a pump motor and process variables such as flow and pressure to effectively monitor reactor components. An experimental flow loop with pump health monitoring equipment and a data acquisition system was used for experiments. Process variables analyzed include pressure, flow rate, water level, and motor vibrations. The electrical signatures monitored were the …

Atomic Layer Deposition On Porous Materials: Problems With Conventional Approaches To Catalyst And Fuel Cell Electrode Preparation, Tzia Ming Onn, Rainer Küngas, Paolo Fornasiero, Kevin Huang, Raymond J. Gorte Mar 2013

Atomic Layer Deposition On Porous Materials: Problems With Conventional Approaches To Catalyst And Fuel Cell Electrode Preparation, Tzia Ming Onn, Rainer Küngas, Paolo Fornasiero, Kevin Huang, Raymond J. Gorte

Faculty Publications

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) offers exciting possibilities for controlling the structure and composition of surfaces on the atomic scale in heterogeneous catalysts and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes. However, while ALD procedures and equipment are well developed for applications involving flat surfaces, the conditions required for ALD in porous materials with a large surface area need to be very different. The materials (e.g., rare earths and other functional oxides) that are of interest for catalytic applications will also be different. For flat surfaces, rapid cycling, enabled by high carrier-gas flow rates, is necessary in order to rapidly grow thicker …

Location-Allocation Optimization Of Supply Chain Distribution Networks: A Case Study, Mark Nicholas Helberg Mar 2013

Location-Allocation Optimization Of Supply Chain Distribution Networks: A Case Study, Mark Nicholas Helberg

Theses and Dissertations

The location of distribution centers is an important strategic decision in supply chain design, particularly as it relates to service quality, productivity, and profitability of the firm. There has been extensive research performed on distribution location models which require the use of complex algorithms and assumptions that make use of these models difficult in practice for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have limited capital and resources. Studies have also failed to capture and quantify potential business results of using more sophisticated methods. In this study, a deterministic and static location-allocation model is designed using a prototype software tool. The …

First Principles Study On Inp (001)-(2 × 4) Surface Oxidation, Santosh Kc, Weichao Wang, Hong Dong, Ka Xiong, Roberto Longo, Robert Wallace, Kyeongjae Cho

Faculty Publications

A theoretical study of the oxidation of InP(001)-(2 × 4) surface is performed using density functional theory methods. Our results on surface oxidation show that the oxygen adsorption does not produce any gap states in the bulk InP band gap, due to the saturation of surface In dangling bonds, whereas substitutional oxygen atoms produce gap states. This study also shows that the surface stability increases with the oxygen content, indicating a strong tendency for surface oxidation. Our results help to clarify the origin of surface gap states upon surface oxidation and provide an insight at the atomic level the mechanism …

Influence Of Moving Load, Structure, Temperature Gradient, And Wheel Configuration On Load Transfer Efficiency, Akshay Joshi Mar 2013

Influence Of Moving Load, Structure, Temperature Gradient, And Wheel Configuration On Load Transfer Efficiency, Akshay Joshi

Theses and Dissertations

An airport pavement consists of one or more paving materials over the natural subgrade. Pavement design involves the interaction of pavement with vehicular loads and climatic conditions. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) uses a mechanistic design procedure, FAARFIELD, for the design of rigid airport pavements. The FAARFIELD (FAA Rigid and Flexible Iterative Elastic Layer Design) procedure is based on layered elastic and three-dimensional finite element-based structural analysis developed to calculate design thicknesses for airfield pavements. The design procedure assumes constant stress-based load transfer efficiency (LTE (S)), of 25% at the joints. Variations in environmental conditions, loading characteristics, type of joint …

Distributed Fiber-Optic Laser-Ultrasound Generation Based On Ghost-Mode Of Tilted Fiber Bragg Gratings, Jiajun Tian, Qi Zhang, Ming Han Mar 2013

Distributed Fiber-Optic Laser-Ultrasound Generation Based On Ghost-Mode Of Tilted Fiber Bragg Gratings, Jiajun Tian, Qi Zhang, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Active ultrasonic testing is widely used for medical diagnosis, material characterization and structural health monitoring. Ultrasonic transducer is a key component in active ultrasonic testing. Due to their many advantages such as small size, light weight, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, fiber-optic ultrasonic transducers are particularly attractive for permanent, embedded applications in active ultrasonic testing for structural health monitoring. However, current fiberoptic transducers only allow effective ultrasound generation at a single location of the fiber end. Here we demonstrate a fiber-optic device that can effectively generate ultrasound at multiple, selected locations along a fiber in a controllable manner based on …

Adaptive Human Control Gains During Precision Grip, Erik D. Engeberg Mar 2013

Adaptive Human Control Gains During Precision Grip, Erik D. Engeberg

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Eight human test subjects attempted to track a desired position trajectory with an instrumented manipulandum (MN). The test subjects used the MN with three different levels of stiffness. A transfer function was developed to represent the human application of a precision grip from the data when the test subjects initially displaced the MN so as to learn the position mapping from the MN onto the display. Another transfer function was formed from the data of the remainder of the experiments, after significant displacement of the MN occurred. Both of these transfer functions accurately modelled the system dynamics for a portion …

Microfluidic Refractive Index Sensor Based On An All-Silica In-Line Fabry–Perot Interferometer Fabricated With Microstructured Fibers, Jiajun Tian, Yujie Lu, Qi Zhang, Ming Han Mar 2013

Microfluidic Refractive Index Sensor Based On An All-Silica In-Line Fabry–Perot Interferometer Fabricated With Microstructured Fibers, Jiajun Tian, Yujie Lu, Qi Zhang, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report a microfluidic fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on an in-line Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer, which is formed by a silica tube sandwiched by two microstructured fibers (MFs). The sensor reported here can be fabricated at low cost, possess a robust structure, and has microfluidic capability. The micro-sized holes in the MFs naturally function as microfluidic channels through which liquid samples can be efficiently and conveniently delivered into and out of the FP cavity by a pressure/vacuum pump system for high-performance RI measurement. Due to the microfluidic capability enabled by the MFs, only sub microliter sample is required. We …

Self-Assembling Biomimetic Hydrogels With Bioadhesive Properties For Tissue Engineering Applications, Craig Wiltsey Mar 2013

Self-Assembling Biomimetic Hydrogels With Bioadhesive Properties For Tissue Engineering Applications, Craig Wiltsey

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field that aims to repair or regenerate lost or damaged tissues and organs in the body. For the repair of certain load-bearing parts of the body, success of a tissue regeneration strategy can be dependent on scaffold adhesion or integration with the surrounding host tissue to prevent dislocation. One such area is the regeneration of the intervertebral disc (IVD). The objective of this work is to generate a bioadhesive polymer that, in addition to bonding with tissue, can support encapsulated cell survival post-adhesion. Thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) was grafted with chondroitin sulfate (CS) (PNIPAAm-g-CS) and blended …
