Neural Network-Based Optimal Adaptive Output Feedback Control Of A Helicopter Uav, David Nodland, Hassan Zargarzadeh, Sarangapani Jagannathan Apr 2013

Neural Network-Based Optimal Adaptive Output Feedback Control Of A Helicopter Uav, David Nodland, Hassan Zargarzadeh, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Helicopter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used for both military and civilian operations. Because the helicopter UAVs are underactuated nonlinear mechanical systems, high-performance controller design for them presents a challenge. This paper introduces an optimal controller design via an output feedback for trajectory tracking of a helicopter UAV, using a neural network (NN). The output-feedback control system utilizes the backstepping methodology, employing kinematic and dynamic controllers and an NN observer. The online approximator-based dynamic controller learns the infinite-horizon Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in continuous time and calculates the corresponding optimal control input by minimizing a cost function, forward-in-time, without using the …

Understanding The Factors That Control Theformation And Morphology Of Zn5(Oh)8(No3)2⋅2h2othrough Hydrothermal Route, Xu Liu, Chunrui Wang, Xiaoyun Liu, Lizhi Ouyang, Ziyin You, Yeqing Lu, Xiaoshuang Chen

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research

The influence of the choice of ethanol-water volume ratio, concentration of zinc salt, and ZnO buffer layer on the formation andmorphology of Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O grown from the hydrothermal route was systematically discussed. Experimental resultssuggested that Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O rectangle sheets and Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O upright-standing plates were obtained bylimiting ethanol-water volume ratio. The concentration of zinc salt was crucial for getting phase-pure Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O. Thepresence of ZnO buffer layer could lead to the that chemical composition of product grown on the substrate was totally differentfrom the product grown in the solution. Possible formation mechanism of Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O was also studied. Ramanspectrum of Zn5(OH)8(NO3)2⋅2H2O displays a complex behavior …

An Investigation Into Ground Moving Target Indication (Gmti) Using A Single-Channel Synthetic Aperture Radar (Sar), Joseph W. Winkler Mar 2013

An Investigation Into Ground Moving Target Indication (Gmti) Using A Single-Channel Synthetic Aperture Radar (Sar), Joseph W. Winkler

Theses and Dissertations

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was originally designed as an airborne ground-imaging radar technology. But it has long been desired to also be able to use SAR imaging systems to detect, locate, and track moving ground targets, a process called Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI). Unfortunately, due to the nature of how SAR works, it is inherently poorly suited to the task of GMTI. SAR only focuses targets and image features that remain stationary during the data collection. A moving ground target therefore does not focus in a conventional SAR image, which complicates the process of performing GMTI with SAR systems. …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A major challenge to the successful planning and evolution of an acknowledged System of Systems (SoS) is the current lack of understanding of the impact that the presence or absence of a set of constituent systems has on the overall SoS capability. Since the candidate elements of a SoS are fully functioning, stand-alone Systems in their own right, they have goals and objectives of their own to satisfy, some of which may compete with those of the overarching SoS. These system-level concerns drive decisions to participate (or not) in the SoS. Individual systems typically must be requested to join the …

We investigated the effect of silicide formation on ion-induced nanopatterning of silicon with various ultrathin metal coatings. Silicon substrates coated with 10 nm Ni, Fe, and Cu were irradiated with 200 eV argon ions at normal incidence. Real time grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS) and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) were performed during the irradiation process and real time measurements revealed threshold conditions for nanopatterning of silicon at normal incidence irradiation. Three main stages of the nanopatterning process were identified. The real time GISAXS intensity of the correlated peaks in conjunction with XRF revealed that the nanostructures remain for a …

Optimal Control Of Weakly Forced Nonlinear Oscillators, Isuru Sammana Dasanayake Mar 2013

Optimal Control Of Weakly Forced Nonlinear Oscillators, Isuru Sammana Dasanayake

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Optimal control of nonlinear oscillatory systems poses numerous theoretical and computational challenges. Motivated by applications in neuroscience, we develop tools and methods to synthesize optimal controls for nonlinear oscillators described by reduced order dynamical systems. Control of neural oscillations by external stimuli has a broad range of applications, ranging from oscillatory neurocomputers to deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease. In this dissertation, we investigate fundamental limits on how neuron spiking behavior can be altered by the use of an external stimulus: control). Pontryagin's maximum principle is employed to derive optimal controls that lead to desired spiking times of a neuron …

Making Climate Data Relevant To Decision Making: The Important Details Of Spatial And Temporal Downscaling, Evan H. Girvetz, Edwin P. Maurer, Philip B. Duffy, Aaron Ruesch, Bridget Thrasher, Chris Zganjar

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

This paper examines potential regional-scale impacts of climate change on sustainability of irrigated agriculture, focusing on the western San Joaquin Valley in California. We consider potential changes in irrigation water demand and supply, and quantify impacts on the hydrologic system, soil and groundwater salinity with associated crop yield reductions. Our analysis is based on archived output from General Circulation Model (GCM) climate projections through 2100, which were downscaled to the 1,400 km2 study area. We account for uncertainty in GCM climate projections by considering two different GCM's, each using three greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Significant uncertainty in projected precipitation creates …

Mechanics Of Blast Loading On Post-Mortem Human And Surrogate Heads In The Study Of Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi) Using Experimental And Computational Approaches, Shailesh Govind Ganpule Mar 2013

Mechanics Of Blast Loading On Post-Mortem Human And Surrogate Heads In The Study Of Traumatic Brain Injury (Tbi) Using Experimental And Computational Approaches, Shailesh Govind Ganpule

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Blast induced neurotrauma (BINT) has been designated as the “signature injury” to warfighters in the recent military conflicts. The occurrence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in blasts is controversial in the medical and scientific communities because the manifesting symptoms occur without visible injuries. Whether the primary blast waves alone can cause mechanical insult that is comparable to existing traumatic brain injury thresholds is still an open question, and this work is aimed to address this issue.

In the first part of this dissertation, mechanics of primary blast loading on Realistic Explosive Dummy (RED) head with and without helmets is studied …

Reward-Driven Training Of Random Boolean Network Reservoirs For Model-Free Environments, Padmashri Gargesa Mar 2013

Reward-Driven Training Of Random Boolean Network Reservoirs For Model-Free Environments, Padmashri Gargesa

Dissertations and Theses

Reservoir Computing (RC) is an emerging machine learning paradigm where a fixed kernel, built from a randomly connected "reservoir" with sufficiently rich dynamics, is capable of expanding the problem space in a non-linear fashion to a higher dimensional feature space. These features can then be interpreted by a linear readout layer that is trained by a gradient descent method. In comparison to traditional neural networks, only the output layer needs to be trained, which leads to a significant computational advantage. In addition, the short term memory of the reservoir dynamics has the ability to transform a complex temporal input state …

Dielectric Properties Of Polymer–Particle Nanocomposites Influenced By Electronic Nature Of Filler Surfaces, Sasidhar Siddabattuni, Thomas P. Schuman, Fatih Dogan Mar 2013

Dielectric Properties Of Polymer–Particle Nanocomposites Influenced By Electronic Nature Of Filler Surfaces, Sasidhar Siddabattuni, Thomas P. Schuman, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interface between the polymer and the particle has a critical role in altering the properties of a composite dielectric. Polymer-ceramic nanocomposites are promising dielectric materials for many electronic and power devices, combining the high dielectric constant of ceramic particles with the high dielectric breakdown strength of a polymer. Self-assembled monolayers of electron rich or electron poor organophosphate coupling groups were applied to affect the filler–polymer interface and investigate the role of this interface on composite behavior. The interface has potential to influence dielectric properties, in particular the leakage and breakdown resistance. The composite films synthesized from the modified filler …

Ocean Current Measurements: Challenges And Opportunities In The Florida Current, William E. Baxley Mar 2013

Ocean Current Measurements: Challenges And Opportunities In The Florida Current, William E. Baxley

HCNSO Student Capstones

The water velocities offshore south Florida are dominated by the Florida Current, and these effects result not only from the tremendous flow of water between Florida and the Bahamas, but also from the eddies and other rotational components imparted by the change in flow direction from eastward to northward along the Florida Keys and the end of the peninsula. These currents have been measured for decades, with methods ranging from subsurface floats to acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) and surface current measuring radars. Data suggests that there is a large degree of variability in the mean flow, including significant vorticity …

Simulation And Detection Of Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions From Super-Regenerative Receivers, Jake Hertenstein, S. Jagannathan Mar 2013

Simulation And Detection Of Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions From Super-Regenerative Receivers, Jake Hertenstein, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel method for detecting the presence of the unintended electromagnetic emissions (UEE) from radio receivers is examined without a priori data or training. As an extension of previous research, the behavior of the super-regenerative receiver (SRR) is modeled and simulated with fractional Brownian noise to verify the detection model. This model shows that the presence of noise in the feedback circuit of the SRR is responsible for the characteristic frequency distribution of the receiver's UEE. A second-order self-similarity model is used to estimate the Hurst parameter as a detection threshold for the presence of long-range dependent noise that is …

Modeling And Application Of Multi-Port Tsv Networks In 3-D Ic, Wei Yao, Siming Pan, Brice Achkir, Jun Fan, Lei He Mar 2013

Modeling And Application Of Multi-Port Tsv Networks In 3-D Ic, Wei Yao, Siming Pan, Brice Achkir, Jun Fan, Lei He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Through-silicon-via (TSV) enables vertical connectivity between stacked chips or interposer and is a key technology for 3-D integrated circuits (ICs). While arrays of TSVs are needed in 3-D IC, there only exists a frequency-dependent resistance, inductance, conductance and capacitance circuit model for a pair of TSVs with coupling between them. In this paper, we develop a simple yet accurate circuit model for a multiport TSV network (e.g., coupled TSV array) by decomposing the network into a number of TSV pairs and then applying circuit models for each of them. We call the new model a pair-based model for the multiport …

An Analytical Placement Framework For 3-D Ics And Its Extension On Thermal Awareness, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi, Jason Cong Mar 2013

An Analytical Placement Framework For 3-D Ics And Its Extension On Thermal Awareness, Guojie Luo, Yiyu Shi, Jason Cong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a high-quality analytical 3-D placement framework. We propose using a Huber-based local smoothing technique to work with a Helmholtz-based global smoothing technique to handle the nonoverlapping constraints. The experimental results show that this analytical approach is effective for achieving tradeoffs between the wirelength and the through-silicon-via (TSV) number. Compared to the state-of-the-art 3-D placer ntuplace3d, our placer achieves more than 20% wirelength reduction, on average, with a similar number of TSVs. Furthermore, we extend this analytical 3-D placement framework with thermal awareness. While 2-D thermal-aware placement simply follows uniform power distribution to minimize temperature, we …

Conference papers

Competition between Irish contractors is more aggressive than ever before. In the current economic climate an ability to construct with greater efficiency could ensure a company’s survival. The purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which efficiency benefits could be realised by contractors on design and build projects as a result of implementing a revolutionary process referred to as Building Information Modelling (BIM). After a critical analysis on all aspects of BIM in the literature review, questionnaires were sent to establish the success of this system in the US and also in the comparatively few Irish firms …

A Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter For Relative Rotorcraft Navigation, Robert C. Leishman, Timothy W. Mclain Mar 2013

A Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter For Relative Rotorcraft Navigation, Robert C. Leishman, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

In this article we detail the fundamentals of a new approach to GPS-denied navigation for aerial vehicles in confined indoor environments. We depart from the common practice of navigating within a globally referenced map, and instead keep the position and yaw states relative to the current node in the map. The approach combines elements of graph SLAM with a multiplicative extended Kalman filter (MEKF). The filter provides quality state estimates at a fast rate and a graph SLAM algorithm maintains a pose graph. We provide specific details for the relative MEKF. We verify the relative estimation approach with hardware flight …
