Analysis Of The Feasibility Of Utilizing Wakeup Radios To Optimize Energy And Latency Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Benjamin D. Parks Apr 2013

Analysis Of The Feasibility Of Utilizing Wakeup Radios To Optimize Energy And Latency Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Benjamin D. Parks

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have the potential to radically improve our lives by pervasive environmental monitoring in many applications. However, there are many applications that would be ideal for WSNs, but where reportable events occur with long (days, weeks) or unpredictable durations between occurrences. These uses are hampered by the high energy and latency costs of always-on and periodic wakeup networks, which waste energy on node synchronization and idle monitoring of the RF channel, and exhibit unacceptably high latency for urgent events, e.g., alarms. This thesis proposes, designs, assembles and tests, in a multi-hop WSN test bed, a wakeup receiver …

The Effect Of Network Transitions On Spontaneous Activity And Sycnhrony In Devloping Neural Networks, Jude P. J. Savarraj Apr 2013

The Effect Of Network Transitions On Spontaneous Activity And Sycnhrony In Devloping Neural Networks, Jude P. J. Savarraj

Doctoral Dissertations

Connectivity patterns of developing neural circuits and the effects of its dynamics on network behavior, particularly the emergence of spontaneous activity and synchrony, are not clear. We attempt to quantify anatomical connectivity patterns of rat cortical cultures during different stages of development. By culturing the networks on dishes embedded with micro electrode arrays, we simultaneously record electrical activity from multiple regions of the developing network and monitor its electrical behavior, particularly its tendency to fire spontaneously and to synchronize under certain conditions. We investigate possible correlations between changes in the network connectivity patterns and spontaneous electrical activity and synchrony. Cocultures …

Intrinsic Mode Function Synchronization Measures For The Anticipation Of Seizures In Epilpsy, Daniel William Moller Apr 2013

Intrinsic Mode Function Synchronization Measures For The Anticipation Of Seizures In Epilpsy, Daniel William Moller

Doctoral Dissertations

Epileptic seizures affect as many as 50 million people and often occur without warning or apparent provocation. We explore the applicability of noise-assisted Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) for patient-specific seizure anticipation synchronization measures as applied to the EEMD intrinsic mode function (IMF) output. Intracranial EEG data were obtained from pre-surgical monitoring at the Epilepsy Center of the University Hospital of Freiburg. Data from twenty patients were analyzed. For each recorded channel, non-overlapping time windows were submitted to the EEMD algorithm, producing twelve levels of IMFs. IMF synchronization measures (mean and maximum coherence, mean and maximum cross-correlation, correlation coefficient and …

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Navigation And Coverage Hole Patching In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guyu Zhang Apr 2013

Unmanned Ground Vehicle Navigation And Coverage Hole Patching In Wireless Sensor Networks, Guyu Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a study of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) navigation and coverage hole patching in coordinate-free and localization-free Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Navigation and coverage maintenance are related problems since coverage hole patching requires effective navigation in the sensor network environment. A coordinate-free and localization-free WSN that is deployed in an ad-hoc fashion and does not assume the availability of GPS information is considered. The system considered is decentralized and can be self-organized in an event-driven manner where no central controller or global map is required.

A single-UGV, single-destination navigation problem is addressed first. The UGV is equipped …

An Automated Approach To Dynamic Site Layout Planning, Duy Huu Nguyen Apr 2013

An Automated Approach To Dynamic Site Layout Planning, Duy Huu Nguyen

Masters Theses

Dynamic site layout planning involves determining the optimum location of resources on the construction site. Site layouts are considered dynamic because construction activities and the number and nature of associated resources change as the project progresses. Previous research has focused on the use of several algorithms to address dynamic site layout problems. These efforts do not enable automated tracking of the dynamic context of construction resources, site space and activities. This research presents an automated adaptive component level system capable of generating layouts which are optimized throughout the phases of construction projects. The system involves the integration of building information …

Cyber-Adaptive Physical Systems For Automated Construction Progress Monitoring And Asset Tracking, Syed Hammad Rasheed

Masters Theses

Despite the benefits of building information models as a means of communication, collaboration and integration in construction projects, their use is often limited to the design and tendering/bidding stage. Potential of building information models lies in its implementation during construction, operations and maintenance phases of a facility’s lifecycle. Tight Integration of building information model and physical facility by means of computational resources is required to achieve this potential such that changes in one environment are automatically reflected in the other. This is termed a cyber-adaptive physical systems approach. This research investigates the applicability of a cyber-adaptive physical systems approach in …

A Supplemental Analysis Of Selected Two-Vehicle Front-To-Rear Collisions From The Nass/Cds, Jack Leifer Apr 2013

A Supplemental Analysis Of Selected Two-Vehicle Front-To-Rear Collisions From The Nass/Cds, Jack Leifer

Engineering Faculty Research

The National Automotive Sampling System/Crashworthiness Database System (NASS/CDS) is a well-known digital repository containing statistics on hundreds of thousands of vehicle crashes that occurred over the past 30 years. Many of the NASS crashes contain estimates of Delta-v calculated using WinSMASH, a common software reconstruction package. Recent work indicates that WinSMASH typically underestimates Delta-v in frontal impacts, and that inclusion of restitution significantly improves the estimate of Delta-v to within 1% of the value recorded on EDR-equipped vehicles [1]. Prior experiments have shown that in front-to-rear collisions, restitution is a strong inverse function of closing velocity (the difference between the …

Comparison Of Biomass To Bio-Oils Reactor Systems: Direct Conversion Vs. Companion Coal Gasification, Alexandra Eicher Apr 2013

Comparison Of Biomass To Bio-Oils Reactor Systems: Direct Conversion Vs. Companion Coal Gasification, Alexandra Eicher

Honors Theses and Capstones

It is well known that the United States’ dependence on crude-oil negatively affects its economy, safety, and environment. To alleviate these negative consequences, a more economical and environmentally-friendly source of fuel, such as biomass, should be explored. The conversion of biomass to bio-oils involves the pyrolysis of biomass at about 500°C, thus requiring a great deal of heat. This heat source could be the excess waste heat from a coal gasifier.

As such, this report specifies the design of an industrial plant that produces bio-oils from biomass by using the waste heat from a coal gasifier. It is designed to …

Assessment Of Surface Energy Balance In Southern Idaho, Beda Luitel

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Proper management of water resources is always a matter of concern in arid regions like southern Idaho such as the Snake River basin where rainfall is limited and the moisture level of atmospheric air is below threshold level most of the time throughout a year. For the proper assessment of water resources it is necessary to quantify the Evapotranspiration (ET) loss in this region and use the available water resources efficiently. A vast quantity of water is moving in the atmosphere under the direct influence of solar energy. So, in order to characterize the behavior of the water cycle, it …

Superplasticity And Microstructural Stability In A Mg Alloy Processed By Hot Rolling And Friction Stir Processing, V. Jain, R. S. Mishra, R. Verma, E. Essadiqi

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The superplastic behavior of a Mg-1.2 Zn-1.7 Y-0.53 Al-0.27 Mn alloy sheet processed by hot rolling and friction stir processing (FSP) was investigated. The kinetics of superplastic deformation were compared with Mg-3 Al-1 Zn and other Mg-Zn-Y alloys processed by different methods. The FSP Mg-1.2 Zn-1.7 Y-0.53 Al-0.27 Mn alloy exhibits slower kinetics of deformation compared with other alloys. The microstructural stability of the FSP Mg-1.2 Zn-1.7 Y-0.53 Al-0.27 Mn alloy is better than the Mg-3 Al-1 Zn alloy because of the presence of different types of precipitates. © 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Muscle Synergies Improve Estimation Of Knee Contact Forces During Walking, Benjamin J. Fregly, Jonathan P. Walter, Allison Kinney, Scott A. Banks, Darryl D. D'Lima, Thor F. Besier, David G. Lloyd

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

This study investigates whether use of subject-specific muscle synergies can improve optimization predictions of muscle excitation patterns and knee contact forces during walking. Muscle synergies describe how a small number of neural commands generated by the nervous system can be linearly combined to produce the broad range of muscle electromyographic (EMG) signals measured experimentally. By quantifying the interdependence of individual EMG signals, muscle synergies provide dimensionality reduction for the neural control redundancy problem. Our hypothesis was that use of subjectspecific muscle synergies to limit muscle excitation patterns would improve prediction of muscle EMG patterns at the hip, knee, and ankle …

Sensitivity Analysis Of A Proposed Model For Removal Efficiency Of Trihalomethanes (Thms) Using Spray Aeration, Aidan Cecchetti

Honors Theses and Capstones

Trihalomethanes (THMs) form in drinking water treatment systems as a byproduct of chlorination and are problematic from a public health perspective due to their carcinogenic potential and their potential for additional formation throughout distribution systems. Recently, regulations have tightened on THMs in an attempt to reduce the risk of exposure for consumers at the far ends of distribution systems. Due to widespread use of chlorine and the reluctance of drinking water providers to overhaul current treatment systems, research has been undertaken to investigate post-treatment removal of THMs. One such method is spray aeration, whereby water is recycled in water storage …

Energy-Efficient Failure Recovery In Hadoop Cluster, Weiyue Xu Apr 2013

Energy-Efficient Failure Recovery In Hadoop Cluster, Weiyue Xu

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s estimation, only in U.S., billions of dollars are spent on the electricity cost of data centers each year, and the cost is continually increasing very quickly. Energy efficiency is now used as an important metric for evaluating a computing system. However, saving energy is a big challenge due to many constraints. For example, in one of the most popular distributed processing frameworks, Hadoop, three replicas of each data block are randomly distributed in order to improve performance and fault tolerance, but such a mechanism limits the largest number of machine that can be turned …

Enhanced Nucleate Boiling On Horizontal Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic Carbon Nanotube Coatings, Xianming Dai, Xinyu Huang, Fanghao Yang, Xiaodong Li, Joshua Sightler, Yingchao Yang, Chen Li

Faculty Publications

Ideal hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite cavities are highly desired to enhance nucleate boiling. However, it is challenging and costly to fabricate these types of cavities by conventional micro/nano fabrication techniques. In this study, a type of hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite interfaces were synthesized from functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes by introducing hydrophilic functional groups on the pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes. This type of carbon nanotube enabled hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite interfaces were systematically characterized. Ideal cavities created by the interfaces were experimentally demonstrated to be the primary reason to substantially enhance nucleate boiling
