Universal Scaling And Intrinsic Classification Of Electro-Mechanical Actuators, Sambit Palit, Ankit Jain, Muhammad A. Alam Apr 2013

Universal Scaling And Intrinsic Classification Of Electro-Mechanical Actuators, Sambit Palit, Ankit Jain, Muhammad A. Alam

Birck and NCN Publications

Actuation characteristics of electromechanical (EM) actuators have traditionally been studied for a few specific regular electrode geometries and support (anchor) configurations. The ability to predict actuation characteristics of electrodes of arbitrary geometries and complex support configurations relevant for broad range of applications in switching, displays, and varactors, however, remains an open problem. In this article, we provide four universal scaling relationships for EM actuation characteristics that depend only on the mechanical support configuration and the corresponding electrode geometries, but are independent of the specific geometrical dimensions and material properties of these actuators. These scaling relationships offer an intrinsic classification for …

Improved Channel Probing For Secret Key Generation With Multiple Antenna Systems, Britton T. Quist Apr 2013

Improved Channel Probing For Secret Key Generation With Multiple Antenna Systems, Britton T. Quist

Theses and Dissertations

Establishing secret keys from the commonly-observed randomness of reciprocal wireless propagation channels has recently received considerable attention. In this work we propose improved strategies for channel estimation between MIMO or beamforming systems for secret key generation. The amount of mutual information that can be extracted from the channel matrix estimates is determined by the quality of channel matrix estimates. By allocating increased energy to channel estimation for higher gain beamforming combinations at the expense of low-gain combinations, key establishment performance can be increased. Formalizing the notion of preferential energy allocation to the most efficient excitations is the central theme of …

Chemoprevention Of Lung Carcinogenesis: Aerosol Administration And Deposition In The Mouse Lung, Jingjie Zhang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

INTRODUCTION Chemoprevention is the use of natural or synthetic agents to inhibit either the initial development or the further progression of early lesions. Chemoprevention of lung cancer aims to decrease lung cancer morbidity and mortality, especially for former smokers. Many synthetic and natural compounds have been investigated for their potential chemopreventive efficacy. Conventional administration of these compounds: especially oral administration) is convenient, but may potentially result in adverse side effects. Aerosol delivery, on the other hand, offers many advantages over conventional routes of administration for diseases of the respiratory tract and the lungs. These advantages include the extensive pulmonary surface …

A Wideband Microstrip To Bilateral Slotline Transition Using Constant Impedance Bilateral Slotline And Heart-Shaped Irregular Cavity, Fenghan Lin, Yong Chang Jiao, Yihong Qi Apr 2013

A Wideband Microstrip To Bilateral Slotline Transition Using Constant Impedance Bilateral Slotline And Heart-Shaped Irregular Cavity, Fenghan Lin, Yong Chang Jiao, Yihong Qi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A microstrip to bilateral slot line (BS) transition is proposed in this letter, which contains a 50-Ω constant impedance BS and a heart-shaped slot line cavity. Unlike traditional slot line transitions, the proposed transition does not suffer from matching issues when losses are incurred by multi-section impedance transformers and this transition has a potential to operate from 530 MHz to over 20 GHz if a K-connector is used. This letter will illustrate the discovery of BS with constant impedance first and then its application in design of the 50-Ω BS. The heart-shaped slot line cavity is proposed for bandwidth improvement. …

Atomic Force Microscopy-Coupled Microcoils For Cellular-Scale Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Charilaos Mousoulis, Teimour Maleki, Babak Ziaie, Corey Neu

Birck and NCN Publications

We present the coupling of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technologies to enable topographical, mechanical, and chemical profiling of biological samples. Here, we fabricate and perform proof-of-concept testing of radiofrequency planar microcoils on commercial AFM cantilevers. The sensitive region of the coil was estimated to cover an approximate volume of 19.4 x 10(3) mu m(3) (19.4 pl). Functionality of the spectroscopic module of the prototype device is illustrated through the detection of H-1 resonance in deionized water. The acquired spectra depict combined NMR capability with AFM that may ultimately enable biophysical and biochemical studies at the …

Formation Of Multiscale Surface Structures On Nickel Via Above Surface Growth And Below Surface Growth Mechanisms Using Femtosecond Laser Pulses, Craig A. Zuhlke, Troy P. Anderson, Dennis R. Alexander

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The formation of self-organized micro- and nano-structured surfaces on nickel via both above surface growth (ASG) and below surface growth (BSG) mechanisms using femtosecond laser pulse illumination is reported. Detailed stepped growth experiments demonstrate that conical mound-shaped surface structure development is characterized by a balance of growth mechanisms including scattering from surface structures and geometric effects causing preferential ablation of the valleys, flow of the surface melt, and redeposition of ablated material; all of which are influenced by the laser fluence and the number of laser shots on the sample. BSG-mound formation is dominated by scattering, while ASG-mound formation is …

The Application Of Cobie To Increase The Functionality Of Existing Software, Barry Mcauley, Alan V. Hore, Mark Mccormack

Conference papers

Building Information Modelling (BIM) can provide a focus on collaboration between the designers, constructors and facility management (FM) personnel leading to major efficiencies in the operational and maintenance phase of a building. The information within a model can be extracted at various stages throughout the project life cycle using the Construction-Operation Building Information Exchange (COBie) schema that provides an open framework for the exchange and delivery of construction handover information. However, it is then up to the FM software companies to take the information and display it in a user friendly way. The authors have set about enhancing an established …

Mechanism Of Fatigue Performance Enhancement In A Laser Sintered Superhard Nanoparticles Reinforced Nanocomposite Followed By Laser Shock Peening, Dong Lin, Chang Ye, Yiliang Liao, Sergey Suslov, Richard Liu, Gary J. Cheng

Birck and NCN Publications

This study investigates the fundamental mechanism of fatigue performance enhancement during a novel hybrid manufacturing process, which combines laser sintering of superhard nanoparticles integrated nanocomposites and laser shock peening (LSP). Through laser sintering, TiN nanoparticles are integrated uniformly into iron matrix to form a nanocomposite layer near the surface of AISI4140 steel. LSP is then performed on the nanocomposite layer to generate interaction between nanoparticles and shock waves. The fundamental mechanism of fatigue performance enhancement is discussed in this paper. During laser shock interaction with the nanocomposites, the existence of nanoparticles increases the dislocation density and also helps to pin …

Estimating The Wind Resource In An Urban Area: A Case Study Of Micro Wind Generation Potential In Dublin, Ireland, Keith Sunderland, Gerald Mills, Michael Conlon

Articles

The micro-turbine wind market in cities faces significant challenges due to the complexities associated with the urban terrain but, if a renewable solution to increasing energy demand is to be achieved, energy conversion systems where populations are concentrated, that is cities, must be considered. This research evaluates the urban wind resource by employing a physically-based empirical model to link wind observations at a conventional meteorological site to those acquired at urban sites. The approach is based on urban climate research that has examined the effects of varying surface roughness on the wind-field between and above buildings. Here, this is applied …

Modeling Local Via Structures Using Innovative Peec Formulation Based On Cavity Green's Functions With Wave Port Excitation, Hanfeng Wang, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Complex via structures such as noncircular antipads are rigorously studied, in the local region close to vias, using an innovative partial-element equivalent-circuit (PEEC) formulation based on the cavity Green's functions. The problem under study is an essential building block that can be used to model complex multilayer structures. With the usage of the cavity Green's functions, the number of unknowns is significantly reduced. Further, nonorthogonal quadrilateral mesh is used to better accommodate the complex shape of the antipads in practical designs. A novel wave port excitation method is proposed, which is new for the PEEC formulations. Singularity extraction in self-element …
