A Vision-Based Relative Navigation Approach For Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft, Robert C. Leishman Apr 2013

A Vision-Based Relative Navigation Approach For Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft, Robert C. Leishman

Theses and Dissertations

Autonomous flight in unstructured, confined, and unknown GPS-denied environments is a challenging problem. Solutions could be tremendously beneficial for scenarios that require information about areas that are difficult to access and that present a great amount of risk. The goal of this research is to develop a new framework that enables improved solutions to this problem and to validate the approach with experiments using a hardware prototype. In Chapter 2 we examine the consequences and practical aspects of using an improved dynamic model for multirotor state estimation, using only IMU measurements. The improved model correctly explains the measurements available from …

Architecture Of An All Optical De-Multiplexer For Spatially Multiplexed Channels, Syed H. Murshid, Michael F. Finch, Gregory L. Lovell Apr 2013

Architecture Of An All Optical De-Multiplexer For Spatially Multiplexed Channels, Syed H. Murshid, Michael F. Finch, Gregory L. Lovell

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Multiple channels of light can propagate through a multimode fiber without interfering with each other and can be independently detected at the output end of the fiber using spatial domain multiplexing (SDM). Each channel forms a separate concentric ring at the output. The typical single pin-diode structure cannot simultaneously detect and demultiplex the multiple channel propagation supported by the SDM architecture. An array of concentric circular pindiodes can be used to simultaneously detect and de-multiplex the SDM signals; however, an all optical solution is generally preferable. This paper presents simple architecture for an all optical SDM de-multiplexer.

Chemoelectromechanical Actuation In Conducting Polymer Hybrid With Bilayer Lipid Membrane, Hao Zhang Apr 2013

Chemoelectromechanical Actuation In Conducting Polymer Hybrid With Bilayer Lipid Membrane, Hao Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Biological and bio-inspired systems using ion transport across a membrane for energy conversion has inspired recent developments in smart materials. The active mechanism in bioderived materials is ion transport across an impermeable membrane that converts electrochemical gradients into electrical and mechanical work. In addition to bioderived materials, ion transport phenomenon in electroactive polymers such as ionomeric and conducting polymers produces electromechanical coupling in these materials. Inspired by the similarity in transduction mechanism, this thesis focuses on integrating the ion transport processes in a bioderived material and a conducting polymer for developing novel actuation systems. The integrated membrane has a bilayer …

Fabrication And Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Ultrathin Nanoporous Gold Films, Shi Feng, Shu Chen, Qing Yang, Juan Xiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Ultrathin nanoporous gold films (NPGF) with a thickness of approximately 50 nm were fabricated via electrochemical dealloy method. The morphology of NPGF was evaluated with a parameter of surface roughness. UV-Vis spectra indicate that the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of NPGF is affected by the roughness of NPGF. With the optimal roughness factor, NPGF displays a linear relationship between the ethanediol concentration and the absorbance intensity at λ = 450 nm. The LSPR effect of NPGF presents …

Numerical Simulation And Optimization Of Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Zheming Zhang Apr 2013

Numerical Simulation And Optimization Of Co2 Sequestration In Saline Aquifers, Zheming Zhang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

With heightened concerns on CO2 emissions from pulverized-coal power plants, there has been major emphasis in recent years on the development of safe and economical Geological Carbon Sequestration: GCS) technology. Although among one of the most promising technologies to address the problem of anthropogenic global-warming due to CO2 emissions, the detailed mechanisms of GCS are not well-understood. As a result, there remain many uncertainties in determining the sequestration capacity of the formation/reservoir and the safety of sequestered CO2 due to leakage. These uncertainties arise due to lack of information about the detailed interior geometry of the formation and the heterogeneity …

Solar Cell Design Using Metamaterials, Yang Liu, Yitung Chen, Jichun Li

College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs

Natural structure with simultaneous negative permittivity and permeability has not been discovered yet. However, using specially-designed metal embedded in dielectric bodies can achieve a kind of artificial negative index. This periodic structure which is smaller than the guided wavelength is known as a metamaterial. However, recent designs of metamaterials have some disadvantages when they are used in the application of solar cell. The perfect absorption is only within a narrow band, and for most of the solar spectrum, the absorption is no more than 10%. Here, a new kind of absorber for the solar spectrum has been designed and analyzed, …

New N-Nitrosodimethylamine (Ndma) Precursors That React With Ozone: Implications For Water Reuse, Erica Marti, Aleks Pisarenko, Eric Dickenson

College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs

Ozonation is a promising treatment step for water reuse. Compared to the “gold standard” with reverse osmosis and advanced oxidation, ozone requires less energy and does not result in a waste brine. This makes ozone more cost-effective. However, the formation of nitrosamines may be a significant barrier to the use of ozonation in water reuse applications, particularly for potable reuse.

The aim of this research paper is to compute the hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of the air flow inside a flexible duct used for residential/small commercial buildings. Various new information which manufacturers do not provide usually are produced numerically among which heat transfer coefficient, needed for estimating heat loss, is a principal one. Circulation zones in depressions are found to exist. It is shown that these regions act as an insulator and decrease the heat loss along the duct. The results show that fully developed conditions exist much earlier with regard to the inlet for both hydrodynamic and thermal …
