Remoulded samples were prepared with different percentage of silt contents and tested. The effects of silt content on shear modulus of Solani sand at different shear strain are evaluated. This effect is studied at two relative densities. It was found that the effect of silt …

Influence Of Relative Position Of The Tunnels: A Numerical Study On Twin Tunnels, W. Channabasavaraj, B. Visvanath Apr 2013

Influence Of Relative Position Of The Tunnels: A Numerical Study On Twin Tunnels, W. Channabasavaraj, B. Visvanath

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The development of cities requires the use of underground area for the construction of transportation infrastructure facilities. Construction of twin tunnels or new tunnel close to the existing ones may be done horizontally, vertically or in inclined manner. In the case of horizontal tunnels the distribution of tunnel load will be more in lateral direction. Since cities are densely concentrated with tall structures, laterally distributed loads will induce settlement in the foundation of the structures. For a particular orientation of tunnels, the soil movement and internal forces in the lining will be affected by both the relative position of tunnels …

Amirkabir Natm Tunnel — A Case Study Of Design Challenges In A Mega Project Of Tunnel In Soft Ground, Aliakbar Golshani, Ehsan Moradabadi Apr 2013

Amirkabir Natm Tunnel — A Case Study Of Design Challenges In A Mega Project Of Tunnel In Soft Ground, Aliakbar Golshani, Ehsan Moradabadi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In spite of enhancement in modeling techniques as well as site investigation methods, uncertainty exists seriously in the process of construction of underground structure in soft soils. These uncertainties arise from limited data of geological data, measurement errors, interpolation of spatially geological properties, and extrapolation of results of experiments and natural analogue studies over times and conditions relevant to the project. Robust and optimize design of tunnel support pattern consists of many important parameters including advance rate and excavation method. However, quantitative definition of these parameters is difficult because of restricting in site investigation data and uncertainties related to them. …

Understanding Sinkhole Consequences On Masonry Structures Using Large Small-Scale Physical Modeling, Marwan Al Heib, Huu Luyen Nghiem, Fabrice Emeriault

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Subsidence and sinkhole are one of important geological risk due to the collapse of underground cavities either natural cavities or due to the human activities (such as mines). The impact of the subsidence and sinkhole on the existing structures can be sever and dramatic. The prediction of the level of damage depends on the characteristics of the sinkhole and the characteristics of the structures. A large small-scale physical model is developed by the INERIS in order to improve the understanding of the behavior of individual masonry structures subjected to ground subsidence or the collapse of underground cavities. The masonry structure …

Ellis Island: Vibration Effects On Historic Buildings Caused By Pile Driving, Sixto Fernandez Apr 2013

Ellis Island: Vibration Effects On Historic Buildings Caused By Pile Driving, Sixto Fernandez

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The seawalls that surround Ellis Island were constructed in the early 1900s and now show varying degrees of deterioration. The approach to the structural repair of the seawalls consisted of installing H-piles and ground anchors for stabilization of vertical and horizontal seawall movements. The H-piles were driven through the retained soils along the seawalls to top of rock. This paper presents ground vibration data collected simultaneously by four seismographs during driving of 40 piles (up to 100 ft depth) at various distances from the historical buildings. A correlation between the recorded PPV values and the distance to pile driving is …

Geotechnical Opportunities On A Fast-Track Bridge Project, Joel W. Rinkel, Christopher G. Naida

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The bridge for Nine Mile Road over Interstate 75 in Hazel Park, Michigan was destroyed by a tanker fire. The loss of the bridge was considered an emergency situation. Therefore, the bridge replacement was put on a fast-track schedule. Geotechnical engineering challenges included the design of shallow and deep foundations, design of light-weight backfill behind abutments, design of temporary earth retention systems to minimize traffic disruption during construction, and coordinating design changes during construction based on variable subsurface conditions. The design was based on the Bridge Design Specifications from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load …

Pressuremeter Testing In Stiff To Hard Cohesive Soils, Robert G. Lukas Apr 2013

Pressuremeter Testing In Stiff To Hard Cohesive Soils, Robert G. Lukas

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The pressuremeter which was introduced into the U.S. in about 1970 provides the geotechnical engineer with a new tool for measuring soil properties. It is conducted in-situ thereby minimizing sample disturbance. It also tests the soil under the prevailing stress conditions in the soil mass. Measurements of the failure pressure and modulus of the soil are used to predict bearing capacity and settlement. This paper discusses a few commercial projects plus sites where load tests were performed and settlement measurements were obtained for comparison to predictions based upon pressuremeter parameters.

An Investigation Of Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Drilled Shafts Using Historical Field Test Data, Kam Ng, Jessica Garder, Sri Sritharan, Jeramy Ashlock

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

To achieve engineered designs with consistent levels of reliability, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) mandated that all new bridges initiated after October 1, 2007, including those founded upon drilled shafts, be designed according to the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) approach. As the first step in developing efficient regional LRFD procedures for drilled shafts, the Drilled SHAft Foundation Testing (DSHAFT) database was formulated. DSHAFT was aimed at assimilating high quality, historical drilled shaft test data from Iowa and the surrounding states, and it presently contains data from 41 drilled shaft load tests, 38 of which are O-cell load tests, …

Braced Sheet Pile Shoring Wall In Sensitive Clay, Yadav Pathak, Marc Sabourin, Brian Hall, Jake Brucker Apr 2013

Braced Sheet Pile Shoring Wall In Sensitive Clay, Yadav Pathak, Marc Sabourin, Brian Hall, Jake Brucker

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This case history describes the design and performance of a temporary braced sheet pile shoring wall constructed within the median between heavily-trafficked lanes of the Trans Canada Highway in Langley near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The excavation extended to 9.7 m depth below the existing road grade into soft, high plasticity, sensitive glaciomarine clay. Glaciomarine clay is locally notorious for excavation and embankment stability and foundation settlement problems. The shored excavation was required to provide an access pit to allow the installation of a 3 m diameter steel pipe culvert by Horizontal Pile Driving (HPD). The braced sheet pile wall …

Case Studies — Pavement Of The Educator's Road, Richard Ray, Peter Scharle, Robert Szepesházi Apr 2013

Case Studies — Pavement Of The Educator's Road, Richard Ray, Peter Scharle, Robert Szepesházi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

One of the lessons of educational strategies in geo-engineering is to inspire the students’ motivation by telling them how the geoengineer thinks and why is it worth attaining. The Geotechnical Triangle developed by Burland proved to be a useful conveyance to deliver essentials of the geo-engineers’ habit of mind. Slight extension of this simplex to a tetrahedron brings into the framework the construction technology, equivalent of importance with ground profile, observed behavior and appropriate model. Case histories retain their central role within this 3D simplex. In this perspective geo-engineering proves to be analogous with medicine where concepts such as symptom, …

Determination Of In-Situ Stress At Desilting Chamber Of Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project (Bhutan), To Reconfirm Its Orientation Influenced By Topography — A Case Study, D. S. Subrahmanyam, S. Sengupta, R. K. Sinha, G. Shyam

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project stage-I was conceptualized in Wangdue- Phodrang district of Bhutan for harnessing the hydro-power potentiality of Punatsangchhu River. Regionally the project area is located within a part of a gneissic terrain of Tethyan Belt of Bhutan Himalayas. The project envisages construction of 195m high concrete gravity dam across the river Punatsangchhu. For Desilting chamber and Powerhouse, it is always desirable to carry out in-situ stress measurement in such huge underground openings for designing of the support types. The stability of the underground cavern gets enhanced if the long axis of the cavern is oriented along or sub-parallel to …

Effect Of Neighboring Footings On Single Footing Settlement, Marawan Shahein, Ali Hefdhallah

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The most economic type of foundations is shallow isolated footings. It is common practice to estimate settlement of shallow isolated footings without consideration of the influence of neighboring footings or loaded areas. In fact there is few, if any, available method to estimate settlement of isolated footings taking into consideration such an effect of neighboring loaded areas. Such an effect might be vital in a lot of cases. This paper presents a case history that shows the importance of such an effect. The case history in hand consists of 28 auxiliary buildings of an Electrical Power plant near Cairo, Egypt. …

Performance Monitoring Of A Bridge Abutment Spread Footing From Construction Through Service, Derrick Dasenbrock, Aaron Budge, Bryan Field, Daniel Mattison Apr 2013

Performance Monitoring Of A Bridge Abutment Spread Footing From Construction Through Service, Derrick Dasenbrock, Aaron Budge, Bryan Field, Daniel Mattison

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The use of spread footings over compressible soils is becoming more common for Minnesota Department of Transportation bridges as technologies improve to better predict, mitigate, and evaluate settlement. In August of 2011 the north abutment of a new bridge crossing I-494 was constructed over compressible soils following a soil fill preload, designed to reduce the foundation settlement from several inches to less than one inch, to meet project requirements. Spread footing foundations are seldom outfitted with instrumentation; adequate performance is frequently assumed based on the decision to use shallow foundations. Here, a monitoring plan was developed to validate the preloading …

Planning And Implementation Of A Mega Geotechnical Engineering Project In Singapore, Myint Win Bo, A. Arulrajan

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Implementation of mega geotechnical engineering projects requires a systematic approach and detailed planning. A mega land reclamation and ground improvement project which consists of various components of geotechnical engineering applications was planned and implemented in the Republic of Singapore from 1990 till 2005, a total period of one and a half decades. Due to the extensive ground improvement required to treat the underlying highly compressible soil, with the presence of highly variable ground profile and ground conditions due to the natural geological process, a detailed ground investigation was necessary. This was furthermore necessary due to the importance of various critical …

These motions were recorded during Firozabad-Kojour (2004) earthquake (Ms=6.4), which occurred near Tehran city. Equivalent linear analysis was performed to evaluate the seismic response of each selected geotechnical and geophysical profile subjected to the scaled 475-year bedrock input motion. The results are presented in terms of site response spectrum …

Using Local Case Histories In Undergraduate Teaching, Andrew T. Rose Apr 2013

Using Local Case Histories In Undergraduate Teaching, Andrew T. Rose

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

One of the challenges of civil engineering practice in central and western Pennsylvania, as well as neighboring states is the variety of geotechnical problems encountered when trying to develop or improve a given site. Slope stability issues, mine subsidence, expansive soils and slag fills, and karst landforms are some of the more common geotechnical problems that might be encountered at a given site. While undergraduate courses and supporting textbooks generally cover the basic principles of geotechnical engineering, time and reference materials necessary to cover some of the specific geotechnical problems commonly encountered in local professional practice are often not available. …

Using The 1911 Austin Dam Failure Case History In Undergraduate Teaching, Andrew T. Rose Apr 2013

Using The 1911 Austin Dam Failure Case History In Undergraduate Teaching, Andrew T. Rose

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The 1911 sliding failure of Austin Dam in Potter County, Pennsylvania presents an interesting case history combining an engineering failure with ethical, social legal and regulatory issues. The concrete gravity dam, completed in December 1909, was plagued by poor design and construction, influenced greatly by the owner pressuring the designer to keep costs low. Seepage through the foundation, an inadequate shear key, and cracking of the cyclopean concrete, all contributed to the eventual catastrophic failure that destroyed the towns of Austin and Costello, claiming at least 78 lives. As a case history, the failure of Austin Dam has applicability to …
