Research On Mppt Methods For Photovoltaic System Based On Microgrid, Jingchu Ji
Research On Mppt Methods For Photovoltaic System Based On Microgrid, Jingchu Ji
Theses
This thesis introduces some basic concepts about a microgrid. Then it discusses the structure of photovoltaic system (PVS) which contains a solar panel and simplified PV models. Next, it discusses and compares different methods for Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) with PVS. It presents three types of DC-DC converters -- Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost converter. This work proposes to apply a DC-DC converter of Buck-Boost type to make PVS controllable because this type of converter has the largest range for operational region so that it can get the best result on MPPT. Finally, this thesis presents a kind of new …
Engineering Spores To Display G Protein-Coupled Receptors For Directed Evolution, Alyssa Misoo Kim
Engineering Spores To Display G Protein-Coupled Receptors For Directed Evolution, Alyssa Misoo Kim
Theses
All human cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane made from a phospholipid bilayer, which is responsible for maintaining a biologically active species, while stopping entry of deleterious substances from the outside. G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the membrane proteins, which transmit signals across the cell membrane. GPCRs are involved in almost every physiological process, and irregular control leads to pathological conditions. Therefore, they are major drug targets. Crystal structure determination is required to understand the molecular details of activation/deactivation. However, GPCRs are difficult to crystallize because of stability issues. An efficient protein engineering system needs to be developed. The …
Admittance Control Of The Intelligent Assist Robot Manipulator For People With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Madeline Corrigan
Admittance Control Of The Intelligent Assist Robot Manipulator For People With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Madeline Corrigan
Theses
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a neuromuscular disease with a prevalence of 1 in 3500 male births, results in characteristic muscle weakness which is progressive with age and leads to loss of independence. And, in this population, maintaining optimal quality of life depends on the preservation of self-sufficiency. Despite the loss of function, non-ambulant people with DMD retain some muscle strength, just not sufficient strength to overcome the force of gravity. There are a number of upper-limb passive and active orthotic devices that attempt to augment the loss of upper limb function in people with DMD by taking advantage of this …
Detection Of Video Frame Insertion Based On Constraint Of Human Visual Perception, Lu Zheng
Detection Of Video Frame Insertion Based On Constraint Of Human Visual Perception, Lu Zheng
Theses
Recently, due to availability of inexpensive and easily-operable multimedia tools, digital multimedia technology has experienced drastic advancements. At the same time, video forgery becomes much easier and makes more difficult to validate the video content. Consequently, the origin and integrity of video can no longer be taken for granted. A methodology is developed that is capable of detecting the video frame insertion based on the constraint of human visual perception. The main idea is based on the so-called differential sensitivity. That is, that the variation of brightness of neighboring video frames has some constraint. First, the video sequence is partitioned …
Effect Of Tablet Compression On The Dissolution Of Aspirin Tablets Using A Novel Off-Center Paddle Impeller (Opi) Dissolution Testing System, Chuan Sun
Theses
In the pharmaceutical industry, dissolution testing is routinely carried out to determine the dissolution rate of oral solid dosage forms. Among several testing devices, the USP Dissolution Apparatus 2 is the device most commonly used. However, despite its widespread use, this apparatus has been shown to produce test failures and to be very sensitive to a number of small geometry changes.
The objective of this study was to determine whether a novel dissolution system termed “OPI” for “off-center paddle impeller” was sensitive enough to determine differences in tablet dissolution profiles caused by different compression pressure during the tablet manufacturing process. …
Current Measurements In Electrospinning, Clinton K. Lien
Current Measurements In Electrospinning, Clinton K. Lien
Theses
Electrospinning provides an economical method of producing nanofibers. The current carried by the main spinning jet is found to be one of the factors in determining the diameter of the fiber product. However, current sources such as the corona discharge and secondary jets will lead to a systematic overestimation of the actual current value.
In this research, experiments with different configurations are set up to investigate the influence of various parameters on the measured current. It is noticed that the measured current is nearly independent on the flow rate of the solution and the external cover. A large amount of …

Methane Partial Oxidation Over Phthalocyanine Catalyst, Yuan Zhu
Theses
The partial oxidation reaction of methane over a zeolite-supported ruthenium phthalocyanine catalyst is studied in a packed bed reactor. The investigation of such reaction is desirable because partial oxidation of methane yields a synthesis gas that can be upgraded to liquid chemicals and fuels.
Reactants of this study are He-diluted CH4 and O2. The effluent includes unreacted CH4 and O2, He, CO, CO2, H2, and H2O vapor. Thermal conductivity gas chromatography is applied to identify the mole fractions of reactants and products. System pressure is maintained at 50 …
Power Dissipation And Mixing Time In A Partially Filled Pharmaceutical Reactor Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller At Different Fill Ratios, Aniruddha Banerjee
Power Dissipation And Mixing Time In A Partially Filled Pharmaceutical Reactor Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller At Different Fill Ratios, Aniruddha Banerjee
Theses
Glass-lined, stirred reactors and tanks are of significant industrial importance, especially in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. These reactors are manufactured with a “glass-lining,” i.e., a glass layer applied to the agitator, the inside of the reactor/tank and to any of the surfaces in contact with its contents in order to maximize corrosion resistance, facilitate reactor cleaning, and minimize product contamination. Because of glass-lining fabrication issues, a retreat blade impeller with a low impeller clearance off the tank bottom is commonly used in glass-lined reactors. In addition, since wall baffles cannot be easily mounted on the wall of glass-lining …

Measurement Of Gas Flow Through Porous Structures Using Thz Spectroscopy, Yihui Wang
Theses
Comparing THz transmission through a sample with the transmission through free-space allows one to calculate the THz absorbance of a sample. Previous studies have focused on using THz absorbance to measure the diffusion of liquid through materials. In this study, the ability of THz spectroscopy to measure the flow of gas in a porous material, packaging foam, is investigated. Specifically, Terahertz spectroscopy from 0.5 to 0.7 THz is used to measure the THz absorption of 1, 1 -difluoroethane. Several experiments are performed to test the ability of THz spectroscopy to measure the flow of gas in a porous material: (1) …

Dissolution testing is routinely conducted in the pharmaceutical industry to provide in vitro drug release information for quality control purposes. The most common dissolution testing system for solid dosage forms is the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Dissolution Testing Apparatus 2. In this work, a modified Apparatus 2, termed "OPI" System for "off-center paddle impeller," in which the impeller is placed 8 mm off center in the vessel is tested to determine its sensitivity to differentiate between the dissolution profiles of differently formulated and manufactured tablets. Dissolution tests are conducted with both the OPI System and the Standard System using three …
Nir Light Transmission Through Skin And Muscle, Deniz Ozgulbas
Nir Light Transmission Through Skin And Muscle, Deniz Ozgulbas
Theses
Light has been used extensively in the medical field for both therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Tissue optical window or therapeutic window defines the range of wavelengths where the light has the maximum transmittance through tissue. In this range, absorption and scattering effects are relatively lower when compared to the visible or middle infrared wavelengths. Knowledge of the transmittance through tissue can help determine the effective light intensities in medical applications.
The objective of this thesis is to determine the NIR light transmission through different thicknesses of animal tissue and its spatial spread due to the scattering effect. Primarily pork skin …

Hydrodynamic Effects Of A Cannula In A Usp Dissolution Testing Apparatus 2, Qianqian Liu
Theses
Dissolution testing is routinely used in the pharmaceutical industry to provide in vitro drug release information for drug development and quality control purposes. The USP Testing Apparatus 2 is the most common dissolution testing system for solid dosage forms. Usually, sampling cannulas are used to take samples manually from the dissolution medium. However, the inserted cannula can alter the normal fluid flow within the vessel and produce different dissolution testing results.
The hydrodynamic effects introduced by a permanently inserted cannula in a USP Dissolution Testing Apparatus 2 were evaluated by two approaches. Firstly, the dissolution tests were conducted with two …
Effects Of Api Particle Size On The Dissolution Rate In Molten Polymer Excipient Matrices During Hot Melt Extrusion, Conducted In A Co-Rotating Twin-Screw Extruder, Meng Li
Theses
The effect of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) particle size on the dissolution rate in the polymer excipient during hot melt extrusion is investigated using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with three different screw configurations. Acetaminophen (APAP) and amphiphilic polyvinyl caprolactam-polyvinyl acetate-polyethylene glycol graft copolymer (PVCap-PVAc-PEG) (Soluplus) are chosen as the model API and water- soluble polymer excipient, respectively. APAP is milled using a fluid energy mill (FEM) into two different particle sizes. The thermal properties of processed samples are characterized by TGA and DSC. SEM and optical microscopy are also used in the morphological studies. Under quiescent conditions, API particles …
Study Of Poly (L-Lactic Acid)/Poly (D-Lactic Acid) Stereocomplex As Nucleating Agent For Poly (L- Lactic Acid) Crystallization, Yuan Lao
Theses
Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer with good renewability and processability. However, it has some drawbacks. The Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) stereocomplex formed via the interaction between optical isomers Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and Poly (D-lactic acid) (PDLA), provides improvements on PLA thermomechanical properties. To investigate the nucleating effect brought by the PLA stereocomplex, samples of PLLA blended with different content of PDLA are prepared by the solution casting method. With different cooling rates (5, 15, 25 °C/min), DSC non-isothermal crystallization experiments are performed. The results suggest that in the presence of the stereocomplex, the PLLA crystallization temperatures …

An increase in injuries resulting from bat injuries has brought the performance of the bats into question. A review of several studies focusing on the effects of the material properties of various baseball bats designs were examined. From this review it is evident that player and spectator safety greatly rely on proper baseball bat design. There was a 30% reduction in the Multi-Piece Failures (MPF) of wooden bats once the requirement of a Slope of …
Qsar Modeling Of Chemical Penetration Enhancers Using Novel Replacement Algorithms, Hui Qiu
Qsar Modeling Of Chemical Penetration Enhancers Using Novel Replacement Algorithms, Hui Qiu
Theses
The applications of transdermal delivery are limited because of the resistance of the skin to drug diffusion. Only potent drugs, with molecular weight less than 500 Da, are suitable to cross the skin barrier. Chemical Penetration Enhancers (CPEs) are used to promote the absorption of solutes across the dermal layers. In this investigation, a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) model is applied to relate chemical penetration enhancer structures with the flux enhancement ratio through a statistical approach.
A database, consisting of 61 non-polar CPEs, is selected for the study. Each compound is represented by 777 QSAR descriptors, which encode the physical …

The effects of the addition of quaternary element, Co, to polycrystalline NiMnGa alloys on their magnetic and shape memory properties have been investigated. NiCoMnGa polycrystalline alloys have been found to demonstrate good shape memory and superelasticity behavior under compression at temperatures greater than 100 °C with about 3% transformation strain and low-temperature hysteresis. It is also possible to train the material to demonstrate a large two-way shape memory effect.
Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging Using Gas-Coupled Laser Acoustic Detection, Jami L. Johnson
Biomedical Photoacoustic Imaging Using Gas-Coupled Laser Acoustic Detection, Jami L. Johnson
Student Research Initiative
Several detection methods have been explored for photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging of biological tissues. Piezoelectric transducers are commonly used, which require contact with the sample and have limiting bandwidth characteristics. Interferometry detection exhibits improved bandwidth characteristics and resolution, yet generally require complicated optics and the incorporation of a contacting reflective medium. Here, we report the use of a noncontact photoacoustic and laser-ultrasound imaging system that does not require the use of a reflective layer. A simple, robust technique known as gas-coupled laser acoustic detection is used, which has previously been applied to composite material evaluation. This technique has the potential …

Efficiently Tolerating Timing Violations In Pipelined Microprocessors, Koushik Chakraborty, Brennan Cozzens, Sanghamitra Roy, Dean M. Ancajas
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Early prediction of an upcoming timing violation presents a tremendous opportunity to mask the performance overhead of tolerating these faults. In this paper, we explore several techniques for optimizing instruction scheduling in an Out-of-Order pipeline, exploiting this new perspective in robust system design. Compared to recently proposed stall based techniques for tolerating predictabletiming violations, we demonstrate a massive reduction in performance overhead, while supporting correct execution in faulty environments (64-97% across different benchmarks). The trend towards massive parallel computing has necessitated the need for an On-Chip communication framework that can scale well with the increasing number of cores. At the same time, technology scaling has made transistors susceptible to a multitude of reliability issues (NBTI, HCI, TDDB). In this work, we propose an HCI-Tolerant microarchitecture for an NoC Router by manipulating the switching activity around the circuit. We find that most of the switch- ing activity (the primary cause of HCI degradation) are only concentrated in a few parts of the circuit, severely degrading some portions more than others. Our techniques increase the …
Fluid-Structure Interactions With Flexible And Rigid Bodies, David J. Daily
Fluid-Structure Interactions With Flexible And Rigid Bodies, David J. Daily
Theses and Dissertations
Fluid structure interactions occur to some extent in nearly every type of fluid flow. Understanding how structures interact with fluids and visa-versa is of vital importance in many engineering applications. The purpose of this research is to explore how fluids interact with flexible and rigid structures. A computational model was used to model the fluid structure interactions of vibrating synthetic vocal folds. The model simulated the coupling of the fluid and solid domains using a fluid-structure interface boundary condition. The fluid domain used a slightly compressible flow solver to allow for the possibility of acoustic coupling with the subglottal geometry …

The up-regulation of cell surface receptors has become a central focus in personalized cancer treatment; however, because of the complex nature of contrast agent pharmacokinetics in tumor tissue, methods to quantify receptor binding in vivo remain elusive. Here, we present a dual-tracer optical technique for noninvasive estimation of specific receptor binding in cancer. A multispectral MRI-coupled fluorescence molecular tomography system was used to image the uptake kinetics of two fluorescent tracers injected simultaneously, one tracer targeted to the receptor of interest and the other tracer a nontargeted reference. These dynamic tracer data were then fit to a dual-tracer compartmental model …

A Multiobjective Optimization Method For Collaborative Products With Application To Engineering-Based Poverty Alleviation, Nicholas Scott Wasley
A Multiobjective Optimization Method For Collaborative Products With Application To Engineering-Based Poverty Alleviation, Nicholas Scott Wasley
Theses and Dissertations
Collaborative products are created by combining components from two or more products to result in a new product that performs previously unattainable tasks. The resulting reduction in cost, weight, and size of a set of products needed to perform a set of functions makes collaborative products useful in the developing world. In this thesis, multiobjective optimization is used to design a set of products for optimal individual and collaborative performance. This is introduced through a nine step method which simultaneously optimizes multiple products both individually and collaboratively. The method searches through multiple complex design spaces while dealing with various trade-offs …

Evaluating The Safety Effects Of Signal Improvements, Ashley Lynn Dowell
Theses and Dissertations
As a result of high crash frequencies on roadways, transportation safety has become a high priority for the United States Department of Transportation and the Utah Department of Transportation. A large percentage of fatal and injury crashes on roadways occur at intersections and traffic signals have been implemented to reduce these severe crashes. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of the traffic signal improvements through the development of Crash Modification Factors (CMFs). Recent research has shown that traditional safety evaluation methods have been inadequate in developing CMFs. In recent years, Bayesian statistical methods have been utilized in traffic …
