Inviscid Analysis Of Extended Formation Flight, James Kless, Michael Aftosmis, Andrew Ning, Marian Nemec

Faculty Publications

Flying airplanes in extended formations, with separation distances of tens of wingspans, significantly improves safety while maintaining most of the fuel savings achieved in close formations. The present study investigates the impact of roll trim and compressibility at a fixed lift coefficient on the benefits of extended formation flight. An Euler solver with adjoint-based mesh refinement combined with a wake propagation model is used to analyze a two-body echelon formation at a separation distance of 30 spans. Two geometries are examined: a simple wing and a wing-body geometry. Energy savings, quantified by both formation drag fraction and span efficiency factor, …

Why A 15 Minute Biological Detection System?, Doug Lewis Jul 2013

Why A 15 Minute Biological Detection System?, Doug Lewis

Faculty Publications

The biological defense community needs to take a hard look at the requirements and assumptions we use to develop our biological sensors. Today the point sensors currently deployed or in development can offer at best “near real time” detection. This translates into approximately 10-20 minutes from the time an agent passes over the device until an alarm is issued. Why are we working to develop detection hardware which in reality contributes little to no advantage to an operational environment? Should the DOD resist fielding (in the near term) “near real time” detection systems, and instead field slower (but much more …

Current Barriers To Successful Implementation Of Fist Principles, Brandon Keller, Joseph R. Wirthlin Jul 2013

Current Barriers To Successful Implementation Of Fist Principles, Brandon Keller, Joseph R. Wirthlin

Faculty Publications

The Fast, Inexpensive, Simple, and Tiny (FIST) framework proposes a broad set of organizational values, but provides limited guidance on practical implementation. Implementing FIST principles requires clarifying the definitions of “fast,” “inexpensive,” and “simple,” recognizing where FIST does and does not apply. Additionally, a subset of the FIST heuristics was expanded upon to increase their usefulness for practitioners. The primary research findings are that FIST principles are less conducive for highly complex or novel systems, immature technologies, future needs, acquisitions in early development phases, or when performance is the foremost value. FIST principles were also found to be constrained by …

Investigation Of Thermal Properties And Latent Heat Reduction Mechanisms In Nanofluid Phase Change Materials, Aitor Zabalegui Jun 2013

Investigation Of Thermal Properties And Latent Heat Reduction Mechanisms In Nanofluid Phase Change Materials, Aitor Zabalegui

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

The thermal properties of paraffin-based nanofluids have been examined to investigate the use of enhanced phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage (TES). PCMs are promising for TES applications, but low thermal conductivity limits their rate of heat exchange with a working fluid. The nanofluid approach has been established as a method of thermal conductivity enhancement, but effects of particle addition on other thermal properties affecting TES are relatively ignored. Significant reduction in latent heat of fusion below traditional effective medium theory has been observed in nanofluids. An experimental study of paraffin nanofluids, containing various diameter multi-walled carbon nanotubes, …

Influences Of The Cinnamic Acid On Zinc Electrodeposition At Glassy-Carbon Electrode, Kai Li, Shen Chen, Shen-Na Liu, Bi-Sang Chen, Heng Lin, Guo-Liang Chen, Qing-Xiang Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influences of cinnamic acid (CIN) on the mechanism of Zn deposition and nucleation kinetics onto glassy-carbon electrode were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The results revealed that the zinc reduction took place via Zn2+ + 2e → Zn in the presence of CIN, but the kinetics of zinc deposition was changed and the formation rate of zinc nuclei was accelerated. In the absence of CIN, the mechanism of zinc nucleation followed the 3D-instantaneous diffusion-controlled nucleation, while the 3D-progressive diffusion-controlled nucleation in the presence of CIN. The addition of CIN reduced the nucleation rate, but increased …

Influence Of Electrode Hydrophobicity On Performance Of Alkaline Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells, Li-Sheng Tan, Jing Pan, Yao Li, Lin Zhuang, Jun-Tao Lu

Journal of Electrochemistry

In the present work, we study the influence of the electrode hydrophobicity on the performance of alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells (APEFCs). QAPS or xQAPS is employed as the membrane and the ionomer, while PTFE is used as a hydrophobic additive in order to adjust the electrode hydrophobicity. We find that enhancing the hydrophobicity of anode can promote the performance of APEFCs, while a moderate hydrophobicity of cathode is required to achieve optimal performance. By using xQAPS as the electrolyte and adding some PTFE in the anode, a peak power density of 132 mW·cm-2 can be obtained at a …

Engineering Performance Of A New Siloxane-Based Corrosion Inhibitor, Niall Holmes, R. O'Brien, P. A. M. Basheer

Articles

This paper presents an evaluation of a new non-toxic corrosion inhibitor on selected engineering properties of concrete mixes with different cementitious materials following a corrosion and durability study on concrete samples. Corrosion inhibitors consist of powders or solutions which are added to concrete when mixed to prevent or delay corrosion of steel by their reaction with ferrous ions to form a stable and passive ferric oxide film on the steel surface. The new inhibitor functions slightly differently and its corrosion inhibition effect is due to the formation of a siloxane coating on the steel surface. Therefore, the performance of the …

A comparative analysis of an imaging method based on a multifrequency Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) approach against two common linear detection algorithms based on noncoherent migration is made. The different techniques are tested using synthetic data generated through CST Microwave Studio and a phantom developed from MRI scans of a mostly fat breast. The multifrequency MUSIC approach shows an overall superior performance compared to the noncoherent techniques. This letter reports that this highly performing algorithm does not require any antenna calibration or phase response estimation and allows the use of efficient and complex antenna geometries without difficult algorithm redefinitions.
