Vibrations Of Crystal Plates With Surface Structures For Resonator And Sensor Applications, Nan Liu
Vibrations Of Crystal Plates With Surface Structures For Resonator And Sensor Applications, Nan Liu
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation is mainly on the theoretical analysis of vibrating crystal plates for acoustic wave resonator and sensor applications. The frequency and mode effects of different surface structures on either or both sides of the crystal plates are the main concerns in this dissertation. These effects are fundamental to the improvement of existing acoustic wave devices, or to the design of new acoustic wave devices, especially new sensors based on these effects.
At first, two-dimensional equations of motion for an anisotropic crystal plate with two thin films on its surfaces are derived by reduction from the three-dimensional equations of anisotropic …
Power Electronics-Enabled Self-X Multicell Batteries: A Design Toward Smart Batteries, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu
Power Electronics-Enabled Self-X Multicell Batteries: A Design Toward Smart Batteries, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The traditional multicell battery design usually employs a fixed configuration to connect multiple cells in series and in parallel during operation in order to achieve the required voltage and current. However, this fixed configuration results in low reliability, low fault tolerance, and non-optimal energy conversion efficiency. This paper proposes a novel power electronics-enabled self-X, multicell battery design. The proposed multicell battery can automatically configure itself according to the dynamic load/storage demand and the condition of each cell. The proposed battery can self-heal from failure or abnormal operation of single or multiple cells, self-balance from cell state variations, and self-optimize to …

Towards Logical Linked Data Compression, Amit Krishna, Pascal Hitzler, Guozhu Dong
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Linked data has experienced accelerated growth in recent years. With the continuing proliferation of structured data, demand for RDF compression is becoming increasingly important. In this study, we introduce a novel lossless compression technique for RDF datasets, called Rule Based compression (RB compression) that compresses datasets by generating a set of new logical rules from the dataset and removing triples that can be inferred from these rules. We employ existing frequent pattern mining algorithms for generating new logical rules. Unlike other compression techniques, our approach not only takes advantage of syntactic verbosity and data redundancy but also utilizes intra- and …
Experimental Tests And Numerical Analyses Of Steel Truss Bridge Gusset Connections, Christopher Higgins, Peter Dusicka, Michael Scott
Experimental Tests And Numerical Analyses Of Steel Truss Bridge Gusset Connections, Christopher Higgins, Peter Dusicka, Michael Scott
TREC Final Reports
The collapse of the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has raised questions regarding the performance and possibly safety of steel truss bridges. The failure investigation indicated that the collapse was due to a design error in the gusset plates used to connect the truss members. The findings also recommend that evaluation of truss connections will be needed, which is a deviation from past practice where only members were considered. Gusset plates connect individual steel truss bridge members together at a node. In 10% of the 200,000 steel bridges in US in 2008, failure of a single truss or connection could …

Real-Time Prediction System Of Bathing Water Quality At Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, Zeinab Bedri, John O'Sullivan, Aisling Corkery, Louise Deering, Katalin Demeter, Wim Meijer, Gregory O'Hare, Bartholomew Masterson
Conference papers
Variations in water quality at recreational bathing beaches can have significant impacts with respect to compliance with related water quality standards, such as Directive 76/160/EEC. The “Blue Flag” award which bases its water quality standards upon the guideline E.coli levels of Directive 76/160/EEC, has become the measure of recreational value of bathing areas. Loss of such designations can have significant impacts with respect to local tourist economies. A revised Bathing Water Directive (Directive 2006/7/EC) came into force in 2006 and will supersede the existing 1976 Directive with effect from December 2014.
The revised Directive gives stronger focus on the protection …

Capacity Planning For Elderly Care In Ireland Using Simulation Modeling, Mohamed Ragab, Waleed Abo Hamad, Amr Arisha
Conference papers
Global population aging is creating an immense pressure on healthcare facilities making them unable to cope with the growing demand for elderly healthcare services. Current demand-supply gaps result in prolonged waiting times for patients and substantial cost burdens for healthcare systems due to delayed discharges. This paper describes a project aimed at presenting modeling and simulation to address elderly care pathways within the Irish healthcare sector. The management of frail patients admitted to acute hospitals and the introduction of the new intermediate care beds are alternative interventions that healthcare executives are interested in simulating to examine their impact on the …

Community As A Connector: Associating Faces With Celebrity Names In Web Videos, Zhineng Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Juan Cao, Wei Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Associating celebrity faces appearing in videos with their names is of increasingly importance with the popularity of both celebrity videos and related queries. However, the problem is not yet seriously studied in Web video domain. This paper proposes a Community connected Celebrity Name-Face Association approach (CCNFA), where the community is regarded as an intermediate connector to facilitate the association. Specifically, with the names and faces extracted from Web videos, C-CNFA decomposes the association task into a three-step framework: community discovering, community matching and celebrity face tagging. To achieve the goal of efficient name-face association under this umbrella, algorithms such as …

Analysis And Applications Of Replenishment Problems Under Stepwise Transportation Costs And Generalized Wholesale Prices, Dinçer Konur, Ayşegül Toptal
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, we analyze the replenishment decision of a buyer with the objective of maximizing total expected profits. the buyer faces stepwise freight costs in inbound transportation and a hybrid wholesale price schedule given by a combination of all-units discounts with economies and diseconomies of scale. This general cost structure enables the model and the proposed solution to be also used for the supplier selection of a buyer under the single sourcing assumption. We show that the buyers replenishment problem reduces to finding and comparing the solutions of the following two subproblems: (i) a replenishment problem involving wholesale prices …
A New Data Aggregation Scheme Via Adaptive Compression For Wireless Sensor Networks, Priya Kasirajan, Carl Larsen, S. Jagannathan
A New Data Aggregation Scheme Via Adaptive Compression For Wireless Sensor Networks, Priya Kasirajan, Carl Larsen, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Data aggregation is necessary for extending the network lifetime of wireless sensor nodes with limited processing and power capabilities, since energy expended in transmitting a single data bit would be at least several orders of magnitude higher when compared to that needed for a 32-bit computation. Therefore, in this article, a novel nonlinear adaptive pulse coded modulation-Based compression (NADPCMC) scheme is proposed for data aggregation in a wireless sensor network (WSN). the NADPCMC comprises of two estimators-one at the source or transmitter and the second one at the destination node. the estimator at the source node approximates the data value …

Determination Of Human Powered Helicopter Stability Characteristics Using Multi-Body System Simulation Techniques, Sean M. Brown
Determination Of Human Powered Helicopter Stability Characteristics Using Multi-Body System Simulation Techniques, Sean M. Brown
Master's Theses
Multi-Body System Simulation combined with System Identification was developed as a method for determining the stability characteristics of a human powered helicopter(HPH) configurations. HPH stability remains a key component for meeting competition requirements, but has not been properly treated. Traditional helicopter dynamic analysis is not suited to the HPH due to its low rotation speeds and light weight. Multi-Body System Simulation is able to generate dynamic response data for any HPH configuration. System identification and linear stability theory are used to determine the stability characteristics from the dynamic response. This thesis focuses on the method development and doesn't present any …

Mechanical Engineering
Applied Materials is a global company that designs equipment for use in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. The scope of this project covers process chambers used for depositing thin chemical films onto silicon wafers. These processes must take place in particularly specific environments– including extremely low pressures and high temperatures. One challenge engineers face when designing these processes is carefully controlling the thermal behavior of silicon wafers. Typically, behavior is predicted using time consuming and computationally expensive CFD simulations. We have been asked to address this issue with a simpler, faster model which will allow engineers to reduce the total number …

Docking System Design And Self-Assembly Control Of Distributed Swarm Flying Robots, Hongxing Wei, Ning Li, Yong Tao, Youdong Chen, Jindong Tan
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This paper presents a novel docking system design and the distributed self-assembly control strategy for a Distributed Swarm Flying Robot (DSFR). The DSFR is a swarm robot comprising many identical robot modules that are able to move on the ground, dock with each other and fly coordinately once self-assembled into a robotic structure. A generalized adjacency matrix method is proposed to describe the configurations of robotic structures. Based on the docking system and the adjacency matrix, experiments are performed to demonstrate and verify the self-assembly control strategy.
P3ht:Pcpdtbt:Pcbm Multi- Polymer Single Layer Solar Cells, Ted Andreas
P3ht:Pcpdtbt:Pcbm Multi- Polymer Single Layer Solar Cells, Ted Andreas
Physics
OPV efficiencies are limited by their narrow absorption; rather than using tandem architecture to overcome this obstacle, our group combined P3HT and PCPDTBT into a single layer BHJ solar cell that achieved 2.0% PCE. This is 33% higher than the pure P3HT control from this group, proving that multi-polymer solar cells have the potential to outperform their single-polymer components.

Reducing Life Cycle Impacts Of The Existing Irish Housing Stock., Albert Famuyibo
Doctoral
Abstract
Despite the importance of addressing the challenges of the 2020 emissions reduction targets of both the European Union (EU) and Ireland, current residential emissions policies have focused mainly on the few existing studies that are primarily used to predict end-use energy and CO2 emissions savings. To allow all energy and emissions across life cycle phases to be evaluated, a process-based life cycle analysis (LCA) hybrid model was developed with the aim of determining the extent of reductions in resource consumption, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and costs of maintaining the existing Irish housing stock.
Thirteen representative archetypes of the …

Temporal Data Mining Of Uncertain Water Reservoir Data, Abhinaya Mohan, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
This paper describes the challenges of data mining uncertain water reservoir data based on past human operations in order to learn from them reservoir policies that can be automated for the future operation of the water reservoirs. Records of human operations of water reservoirs often contain uncertain data. For example, the recorded amounts of water released and retained in the water reservoirs are typically uncertain, i.e., they are bounded by some minimum and maximum values. Moreover, the time of release is also uncertain, i.e., typically only monthly or weekly amounts are recorded. To increase the effectiveness of data mining of …
