Ultrasound-Induced Phase Change Of Emulsion Droplets For Targeted Gene And Drug Delivery, James R. Lattin Nov 2012

Ultrasound-Induced Phase Change Of Emulsion Droplets For Targeted Gene And Drug Delivery, James R. Lattin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the potential of using perfluorocarbon emulsion droplets to add an ultrasound-sensitive element to drug delivery systems. These emulsion droplets may be induced to vaporize with ultrasound; during the rarefactional phase of an ultrasound wave, the pressure around the droplets may fall below the vapor pressure of the liquid forming the emulsion, providing a thermodynamic potential for vaporization. This ultrasound-induced phase change of the emulsion droplet could release therapeutics attached to the droplet surface or aid in drug delivery due to mechanical effects associated with vaporization and expansion, similar to the ability of cavitating bubbles to aid in …

Developing A Guidance Law For A Small-Scale Controllable Projectile Using Backstepping And Adaptive Control Techniques And A Hardware System Implementation For A Uav And A Ugv To Track A Moving Ground Target, Kevin Christopher Meier

Theses and Dissertations

The work in this thesis is on two topics. The first topic focuses on collaboration between a UAV and a UGV to track a moving ground target. The second topic focuses on deriving a guidance law for a small-scale controllable projectile to be guided into a target. For the first topic, we implement a path planning algorithm in a hardware system for a UAV and UGV to track a ground target. The algorithm is designed for urban environments where it is common for objects to obstruct sensors located on the UAV and the UGV. During the hardware system's implementation, multiple …

Is Tech M&A Value-Additive?, Ani Deshmukh Nov 2012

Is Tech M&A Value-Additive?, Ani Deshmukh

Undergraduate Economic Review

Given rising M&A deal volume across all high-tech subsectors, the ability to measure post-acquisition performance becomes critical. Despite this growth, the relevant academic literature is severely lacking (Kohers and Kohers 2000). Using an event-study approach, I find that acquirers and targets both realize statistically significant day-0 abnormal returns (1.23% [p<0.1] and 8.1% [p<0.01], respectively). As positive stock returns signal positive growth prospects in a semi-strong efficient market, AR regressions found that firms' technological relatedness, deal financing, purchase price premiums, and the relative book to market ratio, explained most variance. Overall, high-tech transactions are value-additive for both targets and acquirers.

Power Distribution Network Reconfiguration For Bounded Transient Power Loss, Zhihao Li, Chenye Wu, Jiong Chen, Yiyu Shi, Jinjun Xiong, Amy Yuexuan Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We revisit the loss reduction problem for network reconfiguration in power distribution systems in this paper. Besides the conventional line power loss (LPL), in our model, we introduce a new concept - the transient power loss (TPL), which is mainly induced by the communication asynchronization and response delay. TPL is often overlooked in previous works because it's hard to measure in the conventional power networks. However, we can tackle this challenge in smart grid especially with the help of smart meter. in this paper, we propose a new heuristic greedy algorithm to achieve the minimal LPL with bounded TPL and …

Circularly Polarized Terminal Antennas For Emerging Wireless Systems, Max Ammann, Xiulong Bao, Adam Narbudowicz

Conference Papers

Several types of omni-directional Circularly Polarized (CP) antennas are presented, which are employed by three different types of feedlines: Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) fed, Microstrip fed, and Differential-fed, to achieve omni-directional CP performances. The Dual-frequency Omni-directional CP antenna is proposed by using slot and inductor embedded into radiated patches. These omnidirectional CP antennas have potential application on GPS, WLAN and RFID systems.

This review addresses methods for obtaining sequence information directly from unamplified genomic length DNA. Our generic starting point is a large piece of DNA that contains many thousands of base pairs (kilobase pairs, kbp) or even millions of base pairs (megabase pairs, Mbp). We would like to determine the genomic distance between two repeats of a given sequence, indicated by the red dots on the coiled DNA molecule in Figure 1. Let us consider the case where these sequences are restriction sites, which can be selectively cut using proteins known as restriction enzymes. For decades, gel electrophoresis served as the …

Quantitative, Spectrally-Resolved Intraoperative Fluorescence Imaging, Pablo A. Valdés, Frederic Leblond, Valerie L. Jacobs, Brian C. Wilson, Keith D. Paulsen, David W. Roberts

Dartmouth Scholarship

Intraoperative visual fluorescence imaging (vFI) has emerged as a promising aid to surgical guidance, but does not fully exploit the potential of the fluorescent agents that are currently available. Here, we introduce a quantitative fluorescence imaging (qFI) approach that converts spectrally-resolved data into images of absolute fluorophore concentration pixel-by-pixel across the surgical field of view (FOV). The resulting estimates are linear, accurate, and precise relative to true values, and spectral decomposition of multiple fluorophores is also achieved. Experiments with protoporphyrin IX in a glioma rodent model demonstrate in vivo quantitative and spectrally-resolved fluorescence imaging of infiltrating tumor margins for the …

An Examination Of The Sensitivity Of The Great Salt Lake To Changes In Inputs, Ibrahim Nourein Mohammed, David G. Tarboton Nov 2012

An Examination Of The Sensitivity Of The Great Salt Lake To Changes In Inputs, Ibrahim Nourein Mohammed, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The Great Salt Lake is a closed basin lake in which level and volume fluctuate due to differences between inflows and outflows. The only outflow is evaporation, which depends directly on lake area and salinity, both of which depend on lake volume. The lake’s level, volume, and area adjust to balance, on average, precipitation and streamflow inflows by evaporation. In this paper, we examine the sensitivity of lake volume changes to precipitation, streamflow, and evaporation and the interactions among these processes and lake area and salinity related to volume. A mass balance model is developed to generate representative realizations of …

Action Disambiguation Analysis Using Normalized Google-Like Distance Correlogram, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu Nov 2012

Action Disambiguation Analysis Using Normalized Google-Like Distance Correlogram, Qianru Sun, Hong Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Classifying realistic human actions in video remains challenging for existing intro-variability and inter-ambiguity in action classes. Recently, Spatial-Temporal Interest Point (STIP) based local features have shown great promise in complex action analysis. However, these methods have the limitation that they typically focus on Bag-of-Words (BoW) algorithm, which can hardly discriminate actions’ ambiguity due to ignoring of spatial-temporal occurrence relations of visual words. In this paper, we propose a new model to capture this contextual relationship in terms of pairwise features’ co-occurrence. Normalized Google-Like Distance (NGLD) is proposed to numerically measuring this co-occurrence, due to its effectiveness in semantic correlation analysis. …

Reviewing The American University Law Review On Extraterritoriality: A Critical Response To Viki Economides, Note, Tianrui Group Co. V. Itc: The Dubious Status Of Extraterritoriality And The Domestic Industry Requirement Requirement Of Section 337(Link), Jonathan Stroud

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Recently, the Federal Circuit upheld the Commission’s decision to exclude goods based on a trade secret violation that largely happened abroad. The American University Law Review critiqued that decision on two grounds: First, that a presumption against extraterritorial application of U.S. law applied; and second, that licensing alone could not establish a domestic industry. The American University Law Review's critique remains incomplete, however, as the Federal Circuit correctly decided the case for at least two reasons. first, the Federal Circuit correctly applied the “extraterritorial presumption” canon of construction; and second, the recent Federal Circuit decision in InterDigital Communications LLC v. …

A Hybrid Bishop-Hill Model For Microstructure Sensitive Design, Ribeka Takahashi Nov 2012

A Hybrid Bishop-Hill Model For Microstructure Sensitive Design, Ribeka Takahashi

Theses and Dissertations

A method is presented for adapting the classical Bishop-Hill model to the requirements of elastic/yield-limited design in metals of arbitrary crystallographic texture. The proposed Hybrid Bishop-Hill (HBH) model, which will be applied to ductile FCC metals, retains the `stress corners' of the polyhedral Bishop-Hill yield surface. However, it replaces the `maximum work criterion' with a criterion that minimizes the Euclidean distance between the applicable local corner stress state and the macroscopic stress state. This compromise leads to a model that is much more accessible to yield-limited design problems. Demonstration of performance for the HBH model is presented for an extensive …

Model Based Diagnostics And Prognostics Of Three-Phase Induction Motor For Vapor Compressor Applications, Raja Sekhar Kraleti, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Sarangapani Jagannathan Nov 2012

Model Based Diagnostics And Prognostics Of Three-Phase Induction Motor For Vapor Compressor Applications, Raja Sekhar Kraleti, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, a novel scheme for detection and prediction of multiple simultaneous faults in a three-phase induction motor in the context of vapor compression applications is presented. Induction motors used in vapor compression systems operate under variable speed conditions with variable frequencies. Such dynamic operating conditions may cause an occurrence of multiple, simultaneous faults including insulation degradation and a rotor bar breakage. These faults, when left undetected, lead to the failure of the motor and the entire vapor compression system. Hence, a condition monitoring of induction motors is essential. Conventional fault detection methods have various drawbacks including high implementation …

Can Silver Be A Reliable Current Collector For Electrochemical Tests?, Yunhui Gong, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang Nov 2012

Can Silver Be A Reliable Current Collector For Electrochemical Tests?, Yunhui Gong, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

The true functionality of a current collector employed in electrochemical cells is to ensure a low- resistance steady electrons flow between the cell and instrumentation without involving in any local electrochemical reactions of the electrode. In this study, we investigated the effect of curing temperature of a common current collector, silver, on the polarization area specific resistance (ASR) of a cathode. The results explicitly showed that at least one order of magnitude lower ASR for a cathode with Ag cured at 800°C than that cured at 650°C of the same cathode configuration. Microscopic analysis of the 800°C-cured cells revealed a …

Nonlinear Dynamics Of The Atomic Force Microscope At The Liquid-Solid Interface, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman Nov 2012

Nonlinear Dynamics Of The Atomic Force Microscope At The Liquid-Solid Interface, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

The measurement of intermolecular forces at the liquid-solid interface is key to many studies of electrochemistry, wetting, catalysis, biochemistry, and mechanobiology. The atomic force microscope (AFM) is unique in its ability to measure and map these forces with nanometer resolution using the oscillating sharp tip of an AFM cantilever. These surface forces are only measured by observing the changes they induce in the dynamics of the resonant AFM probe. However, AFM cantilever dynamics at this interface can be significantly different when compared to air/vacuum environments due to the nature of nanoscale forces at the interface and the low-quality factors in …

Load-Relaxation Properties Of The Human Trunk In Response To Prolonged Flexion: Measuring And Modeling The Effect Of Flexion Angle, Nima Toosizadeh, Maury A. Nussbaum, Babak Bazrgari, Michael L. Madigan Nov 2012

Load-Relaxation Properties Of The Human Trunk In Response To Prolonged Flexion: Measuring And Modeling The Effect Of Flexion Angle, Nima Toosizadeh, Maury A. Nussbaum, Babak Bazrgari, Michael L. Madigan

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Experimental studies suggest that prolonged trunk flexion reduces passive support of the spine. To understand alterations of the synergy between active and passive tissues following such loadings, several studies have assessed the time-dependent behavior of passive tissues including those within spinal motion segments and muscles. Yet, there remain limitations regarding load-relaxation of the lumbar spine in response to flexion exposures and the influence of different flexion angles. Ten healthy participants were exposed for 16 min to each of five magnitudes of lumbar flexion specified relative to individual flexion-relaxation angles (i.e., 30, 40, 60, 80, and 100%), during which lumbar flexion …

Circuit of one processing plant was studied in order to adjust the mass balance. The granulometric composition of the streams that belong to grinding and classifying processes was analysed, while the chemical content was determined only at the streams related to separation process. Three connection matrixes are considered in this paper, one corresponding to the size fraction equations, the second corresponding to the chemical content measurements and the third, the solid flow rate balance. The technique used consisted of filtering all the data by a weighted least-squares procedure. Then running the output data in a custom designed feature of the …
