Contrasting Energy Scales Of Reentrant Integer Quantum Hall States, Nianpei Deng, J. D. Watson, L. P. Rokhinson, M. J. Manfra, G. A. Csathy Nov 2012

Contrasting Energy Scales Of Reentrant Integer Quantum Hall States, Nianpei Deng, J. D. Watson, L. P. Rokhinson, M. J. Manfra, G. A. Csathy

Birck and NCN Publications

We report drastically different onset temperatures of the reentrant integer quantum Hall states in the second and third Landau level. This finding is in quantitative disagreement with the Hartree-Fock theory of the bubble phases which is thought to describe these reentrant states. Our results indicate that the number of electrons per bubble in either the second or the third Landau level is likely different than predicted.

Infrared Optical Path Adjustment Method For Common-Path Optical Coherence Tomography, Yanjun Li, Zhongdong Liu, Yinan Zhang, Hai Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new, common-path, in-axis concentric beam-splitting Michelson interferometer is demonstrated for optical coherence tomography (OCT), which can be used to perform high resolution cross-sectional in vivo and in situ imaging of biological tissues. a piece of glass tube with its inner diameter smaller than the beamwidth of the collimated light is used to split the light into a reference and sample beam. in order to obtain the optimal spectral interferogram of this OCT system, an infrared optical path adjustment method was introduced in this paper. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A single mode fiber assembled with a specified length graded index multimode fiber as a collimator, which is used in common-path optical coherence tomography (CPOCT) is described in this paper. Compared with conventional collimator lens, this assembled fiber's structure possesses the advantages of small volume, easy to be fused or connected with other part of the CPOCT system. Furthermore, with this assembled structure and all fiber CPOCT system is constructed which has the potential to detect the internal bodily organs and tissues of human being. Numerical simulation and experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of this method. © (2012) …

Canopy Vs. Roots: Production And Destruction Of Variability In Soil Moisture And Hydrologic Fluxes, Andrew J. Guswa Nov 2012

Canopy Vs. Roots: Production And Destruction Of Variability In Soil Moisture And Hydrologic Fluxes, Andrew J. Guswa

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The leaves and stems of forest canopies intercept and redistribute precipitation in space. Many investigations have demonstrated that spatial patterns of through fall and stem flow are persistent in time, and this produces wet and dry spots in the soil. At the same time, root uptake for transpiration acts to destroy this variability. This homogenization is enhanced by root compensation (extraction at high rates from wet regions) and hydraulic redistribution (transport of water from wet soils to dry via the roots). Because many hydrologic and biogeochemical processes are nonlinear functions of soil moisture, an understanding of the relative strength of …

Evaluation Of The Degree Of Blending Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Binder For Warm Mix Asphalt, Luis Gaitan Nov 2012

Evaluation Of The Degree Of Blending Of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (Rap) Binder For Warm Mix Asphalt, Luis Gaitan

Theses and Dissertations

The paving industry in recent years has seen the emergence of a plethora of warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies and application. With most states incorporating a recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) limit, it is necessary for WMA to not only serve as a greener technology but to work in conjunction with current RAP practices. Presently, most agencies assume a full blending condition in their mixtures which may lead to under asphalted mixtures. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for quantifying the degree of blending that occurs in WMA RAP mixtures at higher percentages of RAP. In addition …

Empirically Bounding Of Space Booms With Tape Spring Hinges, Alan L. Jennings, Jonathan T. Black, Chris Allen Nov 2012

Empirically Bounding Of Space Booms With Tape Spring Hinges, Alan L. Jennings, Jonathan T. Black, Chris Allen

Faculty Publications

Self-deploying structures seek to provide a compact launch package for large, lightweight satellite booms. One self-deploying method is a foldable tape spring. This paper examines the large scale behavior of a boom attached by a tape spring hinge during mock deployments. A boom attached by tape spring to a rigid stand was released and the boom bounced up to 60° before coming to rest (as opposed to snap-through behavior). These large amplitude bounces can cause the boom to collide with sensors, other booms or arrays causing damage or preventing full deployment. Results show the first bounce of deployment is nearly …

Conductivity Of An Atomically Defined Metallic Interface, David J. Oliver, Jesse Maassen, Mehdi El Ouali, William Paul, Till Hagedorn, Yoichi Miyahara, Yue Qi, Hong Guo, Peter Gruetter Nov 2012

Conductivity Of An Atomically Defined Metallic Interface, David J. Oliver, Jesse Maassen, Mehdi El Ouali, William Paul, Till Hagedorn, Yoichi Miyahara, Yue Qi, Hong Guo, Peter Gruetter

Birck and NCN Publications

A mechanically formed electrical nanocontact between gold and tungsten is a prototypical junction between metals with dissimilar electronic structure. Through atomically characterized nanoindentation experiments and first-principles quantum transport calculations, we find that the ballistic conduction across this intermetallic interface is drastically reduced because of the fundamental mismatch between swave-likemodes of electron conduction in the gold and d wave-like modes in the tungsten. The mechanical formation of the junction introduces defects and disorder, which act as an additional source of conduction losses and increase junction resistance by up to an order of magnitude. These findings apply to nanoelectronics and semiconductor device …

Diagnosing Weakness In Basic Principles Of Electricity In Motor Apprentice Education In Ireland, Peter Kenny Nov 2012

Diagnosing Weakness In Basic Principles Of Electricity In Motor Apprentice Education In Ireland, Peter Kenny

Conference Papers

Many Motor trade apprentice students enter the later years of their studies ill prepared for the level of material encountered. This is due to several factors including the level and knowledge of basic electricity and electrical/electronic principles.

A lot of basic material in these areas has been covered during earlier years of their training but by the time they reach the final year of their apprenticeship (Phase 6) it is not safe to assume that they have a full grasp of the basics required.

We have developed a diagnostic test to measure the level of preparedness of these students. This …

Complex Of Myoglobin With Phenol Bound In A Proximal Cavity, Xiao Huang, Chunxue Wang, Lesa R. Celeste, Leslie L. Lovelace, Shengfang Sun, John H. Dawson, Lukasz Lebioda Nov 2012

Complex Of Myoglobin With Phenol Bound In A Proximal Cavity, Xiao Huang, Chunxue Wang, Lesa R. Celeste, Leslie L. Lovelace, Shengfang Sun, John H. Dawson, Lukasz Lebioda

Faculty Publications

Sperm whale myoglobin (Mb) has weak dehaloperoxidase activity and catalyzes the peroxidative dehalogenation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) to 2,6-dichloroquinone. Crystals of Mb and of its more active G65T variant were used to study the binding of TCP, 4-iodophenol (4-IP) and phenol. The structures of crystals soaked overnight in a 10 mM solution of phenol revealed that a phenol molecule binds in the proximal cavity, forming a hydrogen bond to the hydroxyl of Tyr146 and hydrophobic contacts which include interactions with C and C of the proximal histidine His93. The phenol position corresponds to the strongest xenon binding site, Xe1. It …

Mixed Method Collaboration In The Built Environment, Dermot Kehily

Conference papers

The built environment discipline or inter-discipline is a relatively new field in academic research. Its subject matter however is based on the traditional disciplines of the construction and property industries. Determining your ontological position and epistemological approach based on the researchparadigm of one of these fields’ may not provide an adequate solution to your research objectives. This paper outlines that framing your research within the broader confines of the built environment; drawing from related fields in an integrated manner may provide a more successful outcome.Arguments whether the built environment is an academic discipline or even the range of subjects thatmake up …

Knowledge Development Through Reflective Practice, Dermot Kehily Nov 2012

Knowledge Development Through Reflective Practice, Dermot Kehily

Conference papers

This paper examines the development of knowledge through reflective practice and more specifically the development of the author’s knowledge as a result of engaging in reflection on an issue in the field of the author’s research interest. The author commences by consulting and analysing existing published research on reflective practice. The paper sets out the theory of reflective practice as documented by eminent authors in the field. The author addresses the concept of action learning and frames this process within Kolb’s (1976) experiential learning model, in an attempt to formulate a framework whereby his own research focus can be developed. …

Reactive Rayleigh–Taylor Turbulent Mixing: A One-Dimensional-Turbulence Study, E.D. Gonzalez-Juez, A.R. Kerstein, D.O. Lignell Nov 2012

Reactive Rayleigh–Taylor Turbulent Mixing: A One-Dimensional-Turbulence Study, E.D. Gonzalez-Juez, A.R. Kerstein, D.O. Lignell

Faculty Publications

We study the problem of reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence in the Boussinesq framework using one-dimensional-turbulence (ODT) simulations. In this problem a reaction zone between overlying heavy/cold reactants and underlying light/hot products moves against gravity. First, we show that ODT results for global quantities in non-reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence are within those from direct numerical simulations (DNS). This comparison give us confidence in using ODT to study unexplored flow regimes in the reactive case. Then, we show how ODT predicts an early stage of reactive Rayleigh–Taylor turbulence that behaves similarly to the non-reactive case, as observed in previous DNS. More importantly, ODT indicates …

Fib/Sem-Based Calculation Of Tortuosity In A Porous Licoo2 Cathode For A Li-Ion Battery, T. Hutzenlaub, A. Asthana, J. Becker, D. R. Wheeler, R. Zengerle, S. Thiele Nov 2012

Fib/Sem-Based Calculation Of Tortuosity In A Porous Licoo2 Cathode For A Li-Ion Battery, T. Hutzenlaub, A. Asthana, J. Becker, D. R. Wheeler, R. Zengerle, S. Thiele

Faculty Publications

We present a new method to quantify tortuosity in the porous, LiCoO2 cathode of a Li-ion battery. The starting point is a previously published 3D reconstruction from FIB/SEM images with three phases, the active material domain, carbon-binder domain and pore space. Based on this geometrical configuration, we compute effective diffusivities, from which we in turn derive tortuosity values for the pore space ranging between 5 and 11.6 for the three spatial directions. In a next step, we compare our approach to an imaging method that employs back-filling material. These methods do not differentiate between the carbon-binder domain and the pore …

Improve The Performance And Scalability Of Raid-6 Systems Using Erasure Codes, Chentao Wu Nov 2012

Improve The Performance And Scalability Of Raid-6 Systems Using Erasure Codes, Chentao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

RAID-6 is widely used to tolerate concurrent failures of any two disks to provide a higher level of reliability with the support of erasure codes. Among many implementations, one class of codes called Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes aims to offer data protection against disk failures with optimal storage efficiency. Typical MDS codes contain horizontal and vertical codes. However, because of the limitation of horizontal parity or diagonal/anti-diagonal parities used in MDS codes, existing RAID-6 systems suffer several important problems on performance and scalability, such as low write performance, unbalanced I/O, and high migration cost in the scaling process. To …

Fpga Floor-Planning Impact On Implementation Results, Jaren Tyler Lamprecht Nov 2012

Fpga Floor-Planning Impact On Implementation Results, Jaren Tyler Lamprecht

Theses and Dissertations

The field programmable gate array (FPGA) is an attractive computational platform for many applications because of its customizable nature and modest development cost, in terms of both time and money. As FPGAs scale to increased logical capacities, designers have increased flexibility. However, the FPGA placement problem becomes more difficult at increased sizes. Increasingly, designers are encouraged to structure designs hierarchically and floor-plan. Floor planning is a manual process which maps specified design submodules to selected physical regions of the FPGA device fabric. This thesis explores several of the effects that floor-planning has on submodules and the designs they comprise. A …

Incorporation Of Catalytic Dehydrogenation Into Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis To Significantly Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Gerald P. Huffman Nov 2012

Incorporation Of Catalytic Dehydrogenation Into Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis To Significantly Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions, Gerald P. Huffman

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Patents

A new method of producing liquid transportation fuels from coal and other hydrocarbons that significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by combining Fischer-Tropsch synthesis with catalytic dehydrogenation is claimed. Catalytic dehydrogenation (CDH) of the gaseous products (C1-C4) of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can produce large quantities of hydrogen while converting the carbon to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Incorporation of CDH into a FTS-CDH plant converting coal to liquid fuels can eliminate all or most of the CO2 emissions from the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction that is currently used to elevate the H2 level of coal-derived syngas for FTS. Additionally, the …
