Decision Support Models For The External Variety Of Configurable Products, Erkan Isikli
Decision Support Models For The External Variety Of Configurable Products, Erkan Isikli
Wayne State University Dissertations
The decision of what configurations of a product to offer is a difficult one for marketing and sales departments. In this study, we developed decision support models that can help decision makers when using operational models to manage external variety of configurable products. Our main objective is to reduce the number of product variants offered in a proper way so that inventory and demand models do not suffer from the curse of dimension. Due to its ability and flexibility, our framework can be employed under various marketing actions. We applied our framework to both qualitative and quantitative data.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Degeneration of the cervical intervertebral disc is the underlying cause for many patients suffering from neck and upper extremity pain. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, and cervical disc replacements are common, but next generation implants and less invasive surgical techniques are predicated on a comprehensive characterization of cervical endplate morphology. To date, cervical endplate morphometry has not been described in detail, and age-related and gender- dependent differences have not been characterized.
PURPOSE: The purposes of this research were to measure cervical endplate morphometry in both men and women across three decades of life and characterize age, gender, and …

Swine finishing facility ventilation has become relatively complex and is often mismanaged as a system. One of the few ways to truly understand these systems is to spend time systematically going through the many components of the building and how they work as a system. To learn to help producers better, a team of university Extension specialists that included agricultural engineers and animal scientists spent an extended period carefully documenting conditions in a deep‐pit swine finishing building with two 1,000‐head rooms. Exhaust fans connected to the manure pit and wall fans were operated at various stages as a negative‐pressure ventilation …

0.7nm single wall carbon nanotubes have been synthesized within VPI-5 zeolite channels with sucrose as carbon precursor. VPI-5 molecular sieves are synthesized hydrothermally under conventional heating. X-ray powder diffraction, micro raman, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Thermogravimetric analysis have been used to investigate the structure of zeolite and thermal decoposition process of carbon precursors. 0.4nm single wall carbon nanotubes have also been fabricated within AlPO4-5 nanopores. A key challenge is to produce high yield single wall carbon nanotubes with uniform diameter. In order to improve the carbon nanotube yield, different organic precursors are employed. Although …
Processing, Characterization And Performance Of Carbon Nanopaper Based Multifunctional Nanocomposites, Fei Liang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) used as nano-scale reinforcement have been extensively studied since they are capable of improving the physical and mechanical properties of conventional fiber reinforced polymer composites. However, the properties of CNFs are far away from being fully utilized in the composites due to processing challenges including the dispersion of CNFs and the viscosity increase of polymer matrix. To overcome these issues, a unique approach was developed by making carbon nanopaper sheet through the filtration of well-dispersed carbon nanofibers under controlled processing conditions, and integrating carbon nanopaper sheets into composite laminates using autoclave process and resin transfer molding (RTM). …

BACKGROUND: The next generation magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with theranostic applications have attracted significant attention and will greatly improve nanomedicine in cancer therapeutics. Such novel MNP formulations must have ultra-low particle size, high inherent magnetic properties, effective imaging, drug targeting, and drug delivery properties. To achieve these characteristic properties, a curcumin-loaded MNP (MNP-CUR) formulation was developed.
METHODS: MNPs were prepared by chemical precipitation method and loaded with curcumin (CUR) using diffusion method. The physicochemical properties of MNP-CUR were characterized using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and spectroscopy. The internalization of MNP-CUR was achieved after 6 hours incubation with MDA-MB-231 breast …

Dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM) continues to grow in popularity among scientists in many different fields, and research on new methods and operating modes continues to expand the resolution, capabilities, and types of samples that can be studied. But many promising increases in capability are accompanied by increases in complexity. Indeed, interpreting modern dAFM data can be challenging, especially on complicated material systems, or in liquid environments where the behavior is often contrary to what is known in air or vacuum environments. Mathematical simulations have proven to be an effective tool in providing physical insight into these non-intuitive systems. In …

A homo-junction In0.53Ga0.47As tunneling diode is investigated using full-band, atomistic quantum transport approach based on a tight-binding model (TB) and the Non-equilibrium Green’s Function formalism. Band gap narrowing (BGN) is included in TB by altering its parameters using the Jain-Roulston model. BGN is found to be critical in the determination of the current peak and the second turn-on in the forward bias region. An empirical excess current that mimics additional recombination paths must be added to the calculation to model the diode behavior in the valley current region. Overall the presented model reproduces experimental data well.

Top-k queries have attracted interest in many different areas like network and system monitoring, information retrieval, sensor networks, and so on. Since today many applications issue top-k queries on distributed and outsourced databases,
authentication of top-k query results becomes more important. This paper addresses the problem of authenticated top-k aggregation queries (e.g. “find the k objects with the highest aggregate values”) in a distributed system. We propose a new algorithm, called Authenticated Three Phase Uniform Threshold (A-TPUT), which provides not only efficient top-k aggregation over distributed databases but also authentication on the top-k results. We also introduce several enhancements for …

A single, self-assembled layer of highly uniform dielectric alumina nanoparticles improves the photovoltaic performance of organic semiconductor bulk heterojunction solar cells. The block copolymer based self-assembly approach is readily amenable to the large areas required for solar cell fabrication. A fraction of the performance gain results from incident light scattering which increases active layer absorption and photocurrent output, consistent with device simulations. The nanoparticle layer also roughens the device electrode surface, increasing contact area and improving device fill factor through more efficient charge collection

Numerical utilities of the contact block reduction (CBR) method in evaluating the retarded Green’s function are discussed for 3D multi-band open systems that are represented by the atomic tight-binding (TB) and continuum k * p (KP) band model. It is shown that the methodology to approximate solutions of open systems, which has been already reported for the single-band effective mass model, cannot be directly used for atomic TB systems, since the use of a set of zinc blende crystal grids makes the inter-coupling matrix non-invertible. We derive and test an alternative with which the CBR method can be still practical …
Comparing Android Applications To Find Copying, Larry Melling, Bob Zeidman
Comparing Android Applications To Find Copying, Larry Melling, Bob Zeidman
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The Android smartphone operating system includes a Java virtual machine that enables rapid development and deployment of a wide variety of applications. The open nature of the platform means that reverse engineering of applications is relatively easy, and many developers are concerned as applications similar to their own show up in the Android marketplace and want to know if these applications are pirated. Fortunately, the same characteristics that make an Android application easy to reverse engineer and copy also provide opportunities for Android developers to compare downloaded applications to their own. This paper describes the process for comparing a developer’s …

Forensic Evidence Identification And Modeling For Attacks Against A Simulated Online Business Information System, Manghui Tu, Dianxiang Xu, Eugene Butler, Amanda Schwartz
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Forensic readiness of business information systems can support future forensics investigation or auditing on external/internal attacks, internal sabotage and espionage, and business fraud. To establish forensics readiness, it is essential for an organization to identify which fingerprints are relevant and where they can be located, to determine whether they are logged in a forensically sound way and whether all the needed fingerprints are available to reconstruct the events successfully. Also, a fingerprint identification and locating mechanism should be provided to guide potential forensics investigation in the future. Furthermore, mechanisms should be established to automate the security incident tracking and reconstruction …

To License Or Not To License Updated: An Examination Of State Statutes Regarding Private Investigators And Digital Examiners, Thomas Lonardo, Doug White, Alan Rea
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In this update to the 2009 year's study, the authors examine statutes that regulate, license, and enforce investigative functions in each US state. After identification and review of Private Investigator licensing requirements, the authors find that very few state statutes explicitly differentiate between Private Investigators and Digital Examiners, but do see a trend of more states making some distinction. The authors contacted all state regulatory agencies where statutory language was not explicit, and as a result, set forth the various state approaches to professional Digital Examiner licensing. As was the case in the previous two iterations of this research, the …

This paper includes the implementation of Bloom’s taxonomy in the introduction to graphical communication course and shows how students are moved up Bloom’s taxonomy by changing previous guided individual final project to open-ended projects. Instead of following the instructor’s direction to complete the model design, students are required to research the product they want to design, and build the model by themselves. The open-ended projects enable and challenge students to work on higher level of Bloom’s taxonomy by emphasizing design creativity, exploring real engineering design problem, and enhancing their oral and written skills.

The Domain Name Service (DNS) is a critical core component of the global Internet and integral to the majority of corporate intranets. It provides resolution services between the human-readable name-based system addresses and the machine operable Internet Protocol (IP) based addresses required for creating network level connections. Whilst structured as a globally dispersed resilient tree data structure, from the Global and Country Code Top Level Domains (gTLD/ccTLD) down to the individual site and system leaf nodes, it is highly resilient although vulnerable to various attacks, exploits and systematic failures.

Portable Bridge Wim Data Collection Strategy For Secondary Roads, Bernard Enright, Cathal Leahy, Eugene J. Obrien, Jennifer Keenahan
Conference papers
A common method of collecting traffic loading data across a large road network is to use a network of permanent pavement-based WIM systems. An alternative is to use one or more portable Bridge Weigh-In-Motion systems which are moved periodically between bridges on the network. To make optimum use of such a system, a suitable data collection strategy is needed to choose locations for the system. This paper describes a number of possible strategies which the authors have investigated for the National Roads Authority in Ireland. The different strategies are examined and their advantages and disadvantages compared. Their effectiveness at detecting …

Low Loss Vhf And Uhf Filters For Wireless Communications Based On Piezoelectrically-Transduced Micromechanical Resonators, Julio Mario Dewdney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For the past decade, a great deal of research has been focused towards developing a viable on-chip solution to replace the current state-of-the-art VHF and UHF filters based on SAW and FBAR technologies. Although filters based on SAW and FBAR devices are capable of fulfilling the basic requirements needed for IF and RF bandpass filtering and reference signal generation, an alternative solution that can enable the next generation of multi-frequency and multi-mode transceivers while enabling size and price reduction by allowing the manufacturing of single-chip monolithic RF transceivers is highly desired. In response to these new needs, piezoelectrically-transduced micromechanical filters …
Nonlinear Properties Of Nanoscale Barium Strontium Titanate Microwave Varactors, Tony S. Price
Nonlinear Properties Of Nanoscale Barium Strontium Titanate Microwave Varactors, Tony S. Price
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Barium strontium titanate thin film varactors have been widely investigated for the purpose of creating tunable front-ends for RF and microwave systems. There is an abundance of literature observing the capacitance-voltage behavior and methods on improving tunability. However, there is a lack of thorough investigations on the nonlinear behavior, specifically the third order intermodulation distortion, and the parameters that impact it. There is also a research void that needs to be filled for nanoscale barium strontium titanate varactors as nanotechnology becomes increasingly prevalent in the design of RF and microwave components.
This work aims to advance the understanding of nonlinear …

Model And Validation Of Static And Dynamic Behavior Of Passive Diamagnetic Levitation For Energy Harvesting, Chamila Shyamalee Siyambalapitiya
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reports the investigation conducted on the static and dynamic behavior of the passive diamagnetic levitation systems.
Attachment of a device to a substrate hinders the optimum performance ability of vibrating devices by altering the dynamic behavior of the moving part whilst introducing higher overall stiffness. The significance of this effect is prominent especially in vibration based energy harvesters as higher stiffness elevates the resonance frequency of the system, making it difficult to tune into ambient low frequencies. Other advantages of the proposed method are given by the removal of mechanical bending elements, which are often the source of …

Methamphetamine (Meth) is a widely abused stimulant and its users are at increased risk for multiple infectious diseases. To determine the impact of meth on the immune system, we utilized a murine model that simulates the process of meth consumption in a typical addict. Our phenotypic analysis of leukocytes from this dose escalation model revealed that meth affected key immune subsets. Meth administration led to a decrease in abundance of natural killer (NK) cells and the remaining NK cells possessed a phenotype suggesting reduced responsiveness. Dendritic cells (DCs) and Gr-1(high) monocytes/macrophages were also decreased in abundance while Gr-1(low) monocytes/macrophages appear …
