During past two decades a variety of SAW based wireless sensors were invented and research is still in progress. As different frequencies, varied bandwidths, coding techniques and constantly changing post processing algorithms are being implemented, there is a constant need for a universal and adjustable synchronous communication system able to interrogate new generations of SAW sensors. This thesis presents the design of a multiple FPGA based communication system with an operational frequency range of 450MHz-2.2GHz capable of producing user programmed modulated signal. The synchronous receiver is designed to have interchangeable chip, replacement of which would allow adjustment of the receiver’s …

Towards Real-Time Mixed Reality Matting In Natural Scenes, Nicholas Beato Jan 2012

Towards Real-Time Mixed Reality Matting In Natural Scenes, Nicholas Beato

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Mixed Reality scenarios, background replacement is a common way to immerse a user in a synthetic environment. Properly identifying the background pixels in an image or video is a dif- ficult problem known as matting. Proper alpha mattes usually come from human guidance, special hardware setups, or color dependent algorithms. This is a consequence of the under-constrained nature of the per pixel alpha blending equation. In constant color matting, research identifies and replaces a background that is a single color, known as the chroma key color. Unfortunately, the algorithms force a controlled physical environment and favor constant, uniform lighting. …

Multiscale Simulation Of Laser Ablation And Processing Of Semiconductor Materials, Lalit Shokeen Jan 2012

Multiscale Simulation Of Laser Ablation And Processing Of Semiconductor Materials, Lalit Shokeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present a model of laser-solid interactions in silicon based on an empirical potential developed under conditions of strong electronic excitations. The parameters of the interatomic potential depends on the temperature of the electronic subsystem Te, which is directly related to the density of the electron-hole pairs and hence the number of broken bonds. We analyze the dynamics of this potential as a function of electronic temperature Te and lattice temperature Tion. The potential predicts phonon spectra in good agreement with finite-temperature densityfunctional theory, including the lattice instability induced by the high electronic excitations. For 25fs pulse, a wide range …

Numerical Simulation Of Conventional Fuels And Biofuels Dispersion And Vaporization Process In Co-Flow And Cross-Flow Premixers, Xin Gu Jan 2012

Numerical Simulation Of Conventional Fuels And Biofuels Dispersion And Vaporization Process In Co-Flow And Cross-Flow Premixers, Xin Gu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to follow increasingly strict regulation of pollutant emissions, a new concept of Lean Premixed pre-vaporized (LPP) combustion has been proposed for turbines. In LPP combustion, controlled atomization, dispersion and vaporization of different types of liquid fuel in the premixer are the key factors required to stabilize the combustion process and improve the efficiency. A numerical study is conducted for the fundamental understanding of the liquid fuel dispersion and vaporization process in pre-mixers using both cross-flow and co-flow injection methods. First, the vaporization model is validated by comparing the numerical data to existing experiments of single droplet vaporization under …

Adaptive Dynamic Programming For High-Dimensional, Multicollinear State Spaces, Bancha Ariyajunya Jan 2012

Adaptive Dynamic Programming For High-Dimensional, Multicollinear State Spaces, Bancha Ariyajunya

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Dynamic programming (DP) is a mathematical programming method for optimizing a system changing over time and has been used to solve multi-stage optimization problems in manufacturing systems, environmental engineering, and many other fields. Exact solutions are only possible for small problems or under very limiting restrictions, but computationally practical approximate DP methods now exist. Most continuous-state problems require discretization of the state space. A design and analysis of computer experiments (DACE) approach for approximate DP uses experimental design and statistical modeling to approximate the value function in continuous-state problems. However, ideal experimental designs are orthogonal, and when the state variables …

Cnt Reinforced Epoxy Foamed And Electrospun Nano-Fiber Interlayer Systems For Manufacturing Lighter And Stronger Featherweight Composites, Vasileios M. Drakonakis

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Multiple works have been performed in improving carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites especially in terms of strength so delamination, which is the major defect in laminated composites, is prevented. Nevertheless, there is not much focus on improving conventional CFRP systems in terms of weight especially when these are used in primary structures. This work questions whether lighter and at the same time stronger CFRP composites can be manufactured in order to replace conventional CFRP systems in major applications. Under this perspective, this study demonstrates that inducing controlled porosity may offer a systemic approach for manufacturing light weight carbon fiber …

Modeling And Synthesis Of Pvdf-Based Dielectrics For Energy Storage Applications, Xuhui Lu

Doctoral Dissertations

"The purpose of this research was to develop dielectric films for high energy density capacitor applications. Also desired was to develop a deeper understanding of dielectric breakdown and electric energy storage related phenomena through simulation, theoretical analysis, and experimental investigation.

An analytical model incorporating Weibull dielectric strength statistics was developed to establish quantitative relationships between material properties and device performance of self-healing capacitors. The model is useful for designing high voltage capacitors and developing dielectric materials where the effects of electric field-dependent permittivity need to be considered.

In the experimental work, solution-cast poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) homopolymer PVDF films with high …

Dechlorination Of Environmental Contaminants Using A Hybrid Nanocatalyst: Palladium Nanoparticles Supported On Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures, Hema Vijwani, Abinash Agrawal, Sharmila M. Mukhopadhyay

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a new type of hybrid nanocatalyst material that combines the high surface area of nanoparticles and nanotubes with the structural robustness and ease of handling larger supports. The hybrid material is made by fabricating palladium nanoparticles on two types of carbon supports: as-received microcellular foam (Foam) and foam with carbon nanotubes anchored on the pore walls (CNT/Foam). Catalytic reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride with these materials has been investigated using gas chromatography. It is seen that while both palladium-functionalized carbon supports are highly effective in the degradation of carbon tetrachloride, the rate of degradation …

Using Microwave Brightness Temperature Diurnal Cycle To Improve Emissivity Retrievals Over Land, Hamidreza Norouzi, William Rossow, Marouane Temimi, Catherine Prigent, Marzieh Azarderakhsh, Sid Boukabara, Reza Khanbilvardi Jan 2012

Using Microwave Brightness Temperature Diurnal Cycle To Improve Emissivity Retrievals Over Land, Hamidreza Norouzi, William Rossow, Marouane Temimi, Catherine Prigent, Marzieh Azarderakhsh, Sid Boukabara, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

To retrieve microwave land emissivity, infrared surface skin temperatures have been used as surface physical temperature since there is no global information on physical vegetation/soil temperature profiles. However, passive microwave emissions originate fromdeeper layerswith respect to the skin temperature. So, this inconsistency in sensitivity depths between skin temperatures and microwave temperaturesmay introduce a discrepancy in the determined emissivity. Previous studies showed that this inconsistency can lead to significant differences between day and night retrievals of land emissivity which can exceed 10%. This study proposes an approach to address this inconsistency and improve the retrieval of land emissivity using microwave observations …

A Fitness Function Elimination Theory For Blackbox Optimization And Problem Class Learning, Gautham Anil Jan 2012

A Fitness Function Elimination Theory For Blackbox Optimization And Problem Class Learning, Gautham Anil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The modern view of optimization is that optimization algorithms are not designed in a vacuum, but can make use of information regarding the broad class of objective functions from which a problem instance is drawn. Using this knowledge, we want to design optimization algorithms that execute quickly (efficiency), solve the objective function with minimal samples (performance), and are applicable over a wide range of problems (abstraction). However, we present a new theory for blackbox optimization from which, we conclude that of these three desired characteristics, only two can be maximized by any algorithm. We put forward an alternate view of …

Resilience Of Bridges Following Aftershocks, Diego Francisco Espinosa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to predict the reduction in capacity of a structure after an earthquake is vital in the process of assessing a structure after a main-shock or an after-shock. Main-shocks are normally followed by a few aftershocks in a short period of time. Researchers in the past have focused for the most part on the effects of main-shocks on buildings. Very little research has been performed on the ability to predict the reduction in capacity of bridges in aftershocks. This thesis focuses on providing a way of assessing the reduction in capacity for main-shocks as compared to aftershocks and the …

Fire Retardant Polymer Nanocomposites: Materials Design And Thermal Degradation Modeling, Jinfeng Zhuge Jan 2012

Fire Retardant Polymer Nanocomposites: Materials Design And Thermal Degradation Modeling, Jinfeng Zhuge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Compared to conventional materials, polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have a number of attractive properties, including light weight, easiness of installation, potential to lower system-level cost, high overall durability, and less susceptibility to environmental deterioration. However, PMCs are vulnerable to fire such that they degrade, decompose, and sometimes yield toxic gases at high temperature. The degradation and decomposition of composites lead to loss in mass, resulting in loss in mechanical strength. This research aims to improve the structural integrity of the PMCs under fire conditions by designing and optimizing a fire retardant nanopaper coating, and to fundamentally understand the thermal response …

Novelty-Assisted Interactive Evolution Of Control Behaviors, Brian G. Woolley Jan 2012

Novelty-Assisted Interactive Evolution Of Control Behaviors, Brian G. Woolley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The field of evolutionary computation is inspired by the achievements of natural evolution, in which there is no final objective. Yet the pursuit of objectives is ubiquitous in simulated evolution because evolutionary algorithms that can consistently achieve established benchmarks are lauded as successful, thus reinforcing this paradigm. A significant problem is that such objective approaches assume that intermediate stepping stones will increasingly resemble the final objective when in fact they often do not. The consequence is that while solutions may exist, searching for such objectives may not discover them. This problem with objectives is demonstrated through an experiment in this …

Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman Jan 2012

Evolution Through The Search For Novelty, Joel Lehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I present a new approach to evolutionary search called novelty search, wherein only behavioral novelty is rewarded, thereby abstracting evolution as a search for novel forms. This new approach contrasts with the traditional approach of rewarding progress towards the objective through an objective function. Although they are designed to light a path to the objective, objective functions can instead deceive search into converging to dead ends called local optima. As a significant problem in evolutionary computation, deception has inspired many techniques designed to mitigate it. However, nearly all such methods are still ultimately susceptible to deceptive local optima because they …
