Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou
Microgas Turbine Engine Characteristics Using Biofuel, Edmond Ing Huang Tan, William W. Liou
The Hilltop Review
Aviation fuels commonly used today are extracted from the kerosene fraction of the crude oil that is distilled between the gasoline and the diesel. Crude oil is not renewable and the world oil reserve is generally believed to be on the decline. In 2006, 6.3% of the world's refinery production was used for aviation fuel (Nygren et. al., 2009). At an estimated rate of 3% increase of fuel demand per year, aviation use alone will consume the world fuel production by 2026. Therefore, there is a need for the aviation industry to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and, perhaps, …

A Multifaceted Analysis Of Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Data, Madhusmita Behera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Some early stage NSCLC patients have a better survival prospects than others. In any event, the long-term prognosis for NSCLC patients is poor. Various measures were investigated to gain a better understanding of those patient characteristics that confer better survival or predict disease recurrence. A dataset comprised of stage 1 NSCLC patients (n=162) that underwent resection was investigated. Clinical variables (CVs) and tissue microarray (TMA) images with DNA repair protein and standard H&E expressions were investigated. Patients were dichotomized into two groups by survival characteristics and logistic regression (LR) modeling was used to predict favorable survival outcome. Various patient strata …

Collective Nature Of The Reentrant Integer Quantum Hall States In The Second Landau Level, N. Deng, A. Kumar, Michael J. Manfra, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West, Gabor A. Csathy
Birck and NCN Publications
We report an unexpected sharp peak in the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance of the reentrant integer quantum Hall states in the second Landau level. This peak defines the onset temperature of these states. We find that in different spin branches the onset temperatures of the reentrant states scale with the Coulomb energy. This scaling provides direct evidence that Coulomb interactions play an important role in the formation of these reentrant states evincing their collective nature.

Impacts Of Changes In Land Use And Land Cover On Atmospheric Chemistry And Air Quality Over The 21st Century, S. Wu, L. J. Mickley, J. O. Kaplan, D. J. Jacob
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
The effects of future land use and land cover change on the chemical composition of the atmosphere and air quality are largely unknown. To investigate the potential effects associated with future changes in vegetation driven by atmospheric CO 2 concentrations, climate, and anthropogenic land use over the 21st century, we performed a series of model experiments combining a general circulation model with a dynamic global vegetation model and an atmospheric chemical-transport model. Our results indicate that climate-and CO 2-induced changes in vegetation composition and density between 2100 and 2000 could lead to decreases in summer afternoon surface ozone of up …

The solubility of RE2O3 (RE = Eu, Sm, and Yb) with variable valence in molten salts is extremely low. It is impossible to directly obtain variable valence metals or alloys from RE2O3 using electrolysis in molten salts. We describe a new approach for the preparation of variable valence rare earth alloys from nano rare earth oxide. The excellent dispersion of nano–Eu2O3 in LiCl–KCl melts was clearly observed using a luminescent feature of Eu3+ as a probe. The ratio of solubility of nano-Sm2O3/common Sm2O3 …

We have analysed the sensitivity of the tropospheric ozone distribution over North America and the North Atlantic to boreal biomass burning emissions during the summer of 2010 using the GEOS-Chem 3-D global tropospheric chemical transport model and observations from in situ and satellite instruments. We show that the model ozone distribution is consistent with observations from the Pico Mountain Observatory in the Azores, ozonesondes across Canada, and the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Instrument (IASI) satellite instruments. Mean biases between the model and observed ozone mixing ratio in the free troposphere were less than 10 ppbv. We …

Direct Measurements And Numerical Simulations Of Gas Charging In Microelectromechanical System Capacitive Switches, A. Venkattraman, A. Garg, Dimitrios Peroulis, Alina A. Alexeenko
Birck and NCN Publications
Gas breakdown in microelectromechanical system capacitive switches is demonstrated using high resolution current measurements and by particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision (PIC/MCC) simulations. Measurements show an electric current through a 3 mu m air gap increasing exponentially with voltage, starting at 60 V. PIC/MCC simulations with Fowler-Nordheim [Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 119, 173 (1928)] field emission reveal self-sustained discharges with significant ion enhancement and a positive space charge. The effective ion-enhanced field emission coefficient increases with voltage up to about 0.3 with an electron avalanche occurring at 159 V. The measurements and simulations demonstrate a charging mechanism for microswitches consistent …

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Magnetic materials with a high self-biased ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency and low electrical conductivity hold great potential for RF/microwave devices. In this work, ferrite film consisting of Fe3O4 (1.2 mu m)/photoresist (60 nm)/Fe3O4 (1.2 mu m) was deposited at 90 degrees C via spin spray deposition. Broadband impedance imaging with nanometer spatial resolution was recorded by using scanning microwave microscopy. Compared to a reference sample, it turned out that the grain boundary appeared to be more conductive than the grain.

Modeling Small Unmanned Aerial System Mishaps Using Logistics Regression And Artificial Neural Networks, Sean E. Wolf
Modeling Small Unmanned Aerial System Mishaps Using Logistics Regression And Artificial Neural Networks, Sean E. Wolf
Theses and Dissertations
A dataset of 854 small unmanned aerial system (SUAS) flight experiments from 2005-2009 is analyzed to determine significant factors that contribute to mishaps. The data from 29 airframes of different designs and technology readiness levels were aggregated. 20 measured parameters from each flight experiment are investigated, including wind speed, pilot experience, number of prior flights, pilot currency, etc. Outcomes of failures (loss of flight data) and damage (injury to airframe) are classified by logistic regression modeling and artificial neural network analysis. From the analysis, it can be concluded that SUAS damage is a random event that cannot be predicted with …
Quantitative Cherenkov Emission Spectroscopy For Tissue Oxygenation Assessment, Johan Axelsson, Adam K. Glaser, David J. Gladstone, Brian W. Pogue
Quantitative Cherenkov Emission Spectroscopy For Tissue Oxygenation Assessment, Johan Axelsson, Adam K. Glaser, David J. Gladstone, Brian W. Pogue
Dartmouth Scholarship
Measurements of Cherenkov emission in tissue during radiation therapy are shown to enable estimation of hemoglobin oxygen saturation non-invasively, through spectral fitting of the spontaneous emissions from the treated tissue. Tissue oxygenation plays a critical role in the efficacy of radiation therapy to kill tumor tissue. Yet in-vivo measurement of this has remained elusive in routine use because of the complexity of oxygen measurement techniques. There is a spectrally broad emission of Cherenkov light that is induced during the time of irradiation, and as this travels through tissue from the point of the radiation deposition, the tissue absorption and scatter …

A Quasi-Orthogonal Correlator-Based Bpnn Pn Code Acquisition Scheme For Underwater Acoustic Dsss Communication, Jiang-Yao Chen, Shao-Wei Leu, Chin-Fen Lin, Shun-Hsyung Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper proposes a quasi-orthogonal correlator-based back propagation neural network (BPNN) pseudo-noise (PN) code acquisition scheme for underwater acoustic direct sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) communication. The main idea is to use short-length quasi-orthogonal correlators for coarse phase estimation and a BPNN based discriminator for fine phase calculation. When compared with other neuralnet based PN code acquisition schemes, the short quasiorthogonal correlators effectively locate possible phases of the received signal with high tolerance to interference and require no full-length correlation. These capabilities have been verified by extensive computer simulations and the results clearly show that the proposed scheme has the characteristics that …

The Relationship Between Accelerated Migration Time In Acmt And Ponding Time In Ponding Test For Cement-Based Materials, Yu-Sheng Chen, Ming-Chih Li, Yi-Wen Chan, Chung-Chia Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The salt ponding test has been widely used in recent year to evaluate the durability of cement-based materials. However, the duration of more than 90 days salt ponding is considered as time-consuming. In this study, the electrochemical technique (ACMT; Accelerated Chloride Migration Test) is applied to accelerate the movement of chloride ion in the cement-based materials to reduce the duration of testing time. The chloride profiles are obtained from ponding test with various ponding times and ACMT with different accelerated migration times. The total amount of chloride in specimens are calculated from the profiles and compared. Based on the total …
Transient Response Of Sloshing Fluid In A Three Dimensional Tank, Chih-Hua Wu, Bang-Fuh Chen
Transient Response Of Sloshing Fluid In A Three Dimensional Tank, Chih-Hua Wu, Bang-Fuh Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Sloshing waves in moving tanks have been studied numerically, theoretically and experimentally in the past several decades. Most reported studies have been for tanks excited by forcing motion in a limited number of directions and with fixed excitation frequencies throughout the forcing. In the present study, a time-independent finite difference method is used to simulate fluid sloshing in the three-dimensional tanks with arbitrary depths and the tanks are subject to a range of excitation frequencies with motions that exhibit multiple degrees of freedom. The developed numerical scheme is verified by rigorous benchmark tests, and the advantage and efficiency of the …
Multiple Scattering Of Sh Waves By An Embedded Truncated Circular Cavity, Deng-How Tsaur, Kao-Hao Chang
Multiple Scattering Of Sh Waves By An Embedded Truncated Circular Cavity, Deng-How Tsaur, Kao-Hao Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The region-matching technique is implemented to derive a series solution to the SH-wave scattering problem of an embedded truncated circular cavity. An introduced auxiliary boundary partitions the whole analyzed region into two subregions, whose displacement fields are expressed as a superposition of appropriate wavefunctions. Taking advantage of the method of images, the zero-stress boundary condition on the horizontal ground surface is satisfied automatically. Suitable Graf’s addition formulas facilitate the enforcement of boundary conditions on the artificial interface and curved cavity surface for determining the expansion coefficients. Effects of several parameters on steady-state surface motions are discussed. Transient changes in underground …

Ultimate Load-Bearing Capacity Of Self-Anchored Suspension Bridges, Chin-Sheng Kao, Chang-Huan Kou, Wen-Liang Qiu, Jeng-Lin Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a method of reduced stiffness coupled with step increments to simulate the nonlinear problem that occurs when a material is in the elasto-plastic stage. A set of equations was developed and used to analyze the ultimate loadbearing capacity and the failure process of a self-anchored suspension bridge. Also investigated here were the effects on the load-bearing capacity due to variations in the strength and stiffness of the four substructures and due to broken hangers. The results showed that variations in the material strength and the structural stiffness of the substructures can lead to different degrees of influence …
Numerical Study On Significance Of Wind Action On 2-D Freak Waves With Different Parameters, Shiqiang Yan, Qingwei Ma
Numerical Study On Significance Of Wind Action On 2-D Freak Waves With Different Parameters, Shiqiang Yan, Qingwei Ma
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a numerical study on how the significance of wind action differs when varying the wave parameters. The quasi arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element method (QALE-FEM) is used for this purpose. An improved model for wind-excited pressure and wind-driven current, which is recently developed by the authors of this paper [27], is coupled with the QALE-FEM. Many cases involving freak waves with different focusing time/point and frequency ranges under the action of winds are investigated. The results show that the significance of wind actions on freak waves strongly depends on the focusing time, the focusing point and the frequency …

Research On Optimization Of Hull Lines For Minimum Resistance Based On Rankine Source Method, Bao-Ji Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In order to obtain the hull form with the excellent resistance performance, the optimal design program of hull lines with the independent intellectual property is developed. An optimal design method is proposed based on the minimum total resistance and on NGA, SGA and NLP. The fore-body is optimized with total resistance as the objective function, (in which total resistance can be expressed as sum of wave resistance and friction resistance), with the parameter of hull form modification function as design variables, with an appropriate displacement as a constraint. At last, the numerical optimization examples for s60 ships are provided, which …

Fuzzy Decision On Optimal Collision Avoidance Measures For Ships In Vessel Traffic Service, Chien-Min Su, Ki-Yin Chang, Chih-Yung Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This article proposes a new collision avoidance decision method for ships, allowing ships at risk of collision to take timely collision avoidance measures to ensure safe passage. Through vessel traffic service (VTS) collision alert system, an analysis can be made for the probability of a ship collision and an early warning can be issued. For ships in potential collision danger, the proposed method will use Microsoft Visual Studio to establish a knowledge base of international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. Thus, based on an analysis of the situation when encountering other ships, the knowledge base will suggest an appropriate …
A Color Image Authentication And Recovery Method Using Block Truncation Code Embedding, Shu-Chien Huang, Ching-Fen Jiang
A Color Image Authentication And Recovery Method Using Block Truncation Code Embedding, Shu-Chien Huang, Ching-Fen Jiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A new method for color image authentication and recovery is proposed in this paper. To achieve this goal, the least significant bit (LSB) and the second LSB of the spatial domain were selected to embed the watermark. The watermark consists of two parts: authentication data and recovery data made by block truncation code and bitmap. According to the experimental results, the image embedded within the authentication data and recovery data can still preserve high image quality. The results also reveal that the tampered images can be successfully recovered with acceptable visual quality.

Industrial Technology and Packaging
One of the ultimate targets of lean manufacturing paradigm is to balance production and produce at takt time in production cells. This paper investigates the performance of a lean cell that implements the previous lean goals under uncertainty. The investigation is based on a system dynamics approach to model a dynamic lean cell. Backlog is used as a performance metric that reflects the cell’s responsiveness. The cell performance is compared under certain and uncertain external (demand) and internal (machine availability) conditions. Results showed that although lean cell is expected to be responsive to external demand with minimum waste, however, this …

Semi-Analytical Solution For Radiation Of A Hollow Sphere With An Opening Hole In Finite Depth, Man-Sheng Dong, Guo-Ping Miao, Ju Fan, Ren-Chuan Zhu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An investigation is conducted on radiation of a submerged hollow sphere with an opening hole in finite water depth in this article. Based on the linear theory, the method of multipole expansions is used to obtain the fluid velocity potential in the form of double series of the associated Legendre functions with the unknown coefficients of an infinite set. In terms of the body surface boundary condition and the matching condition between the inner and outer flows at the hole, the complex matrix equations for the coefficients of the series are established. The infinite sets of matrix equations are solved …
Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang
Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Two features required for modeling high-frequency acoustic scattering from seafloor are roughness and discrete objects distributed on the seafloor. A laser scanner was deployed to acquire fine-scale bottom roughness off the coast of New Jersey in 2006. On the bathymetry map, it was found that the sites were covered by shell fragments. Cross-comparison between the laser reflection intensity and the bathymetry suggests that the shell fragments have a stronger reflection intensity than the seafloor. This phenomenon was confirmed by an indoor experiment on a simulated seafloor. An intensity-based algorithm was developed to detect shell fragments on the seafloor. The field …

Interactions Of Waves With An Array Of Tandem Placed Bottom-Mounted Cylinders, Baris Barlas
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Diffraction of water waves with an array of bottommounted cylinders of circular cross section is studied. A vertically-integrated nonlinear dispersive wave model with inclusion of the wave breaking effect in a semi-empirical manner, in nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system is used for simulating linear and nonlinear wave forces on bottom mounted tandem placed circular cylinders. The wave model is in terms of the contravariant velocities. The mesh required is generated based on staggered grids on the freesurface. The matrix equation of the finite difference method is solved through an iterative approach at each time step. For outgoing waves Sommerfeld’s first order …
