Real-Time Change And Damage Detection Of Landslides And Other Earth Movements Threatening Public Infrastructure, Michael J. Olsen, Shawn Butcher, Evon P. Silvia
TREC Final Reports
Geologic hazards such as coastal erosion, landslides, seismic loading, etc. constantly threaten public highway construction and maintenance. Repeat surveys using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS, ground-based LiDAR) enable rapid 3D data acquisition to map, see, analyze, and understand the processes generating such problems. Previously, change detection and analysis between scan surveys was conducted during post-processing upon return to the office, instead of while collecting data in the field. Change detection in the field improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the field investigation. We have developed a new algorithm that quickly geo-references scans upon field acquisition and simultaneously performs change detection by …

Finite-Element-Based Generalized Impedance Boundary Condition For Modeling Plasmonic Nanostructures, Shiquan He, Wei E.I. Sha, Lijun Jiang, Wallace C.H. Choy, Weng Cho Chew, Zaiping Nie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The superior ability of plasmonic structures to manipulate light has propelled their extensive applications in nanophotonics techniques and devices. Computational electromagnetics plays a critical role in characterizing and optimizing the nanometallic structures. In this paper, a general numerical algorithm, which is different from the commonly used discrete dipole approximation, the finite-difference time-domain, and the surface integral equation (SIE) method, is proposed to model plasmonic nanostructures. In this algorithm, the generalized impedance boundary condition (GIBC) based on the finite element method (FEM) is formulated and converted to the SIE. The plasmonic nanostructures with arbitrary inhomogeneity and shapes are modeled by the …

Resource Scheduling Under Uncertainty In A Smart Grid With Renewables And Plug-In Vehicles, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The power system and transportation sector are our planet's main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy sources (RESs), mainly wind and solar, can reduce emissions from the electric energy sector; however, they are very intermittent. Likewise, next generation plug-in vehicles, which include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles with vehicletogrid capability, referred to as grid able vehicles (GVs) by the authors, can reduce emissions from the transportation sector. GVs can be used as loads, energy sources (small portable power plants) and energy storage units in a smart grid integrated with renewable energy sources. However, uncertainty surrounds the controllability …

Commotio retinae is a transient opacification of the retina due to outer retinal disruption occurring in a contrecoup fashion after blunt trauma.Histological studies in animals and humans after ocular blunt trauma have revealed that disruption occurs at the level of the photoreceptor outer segments and retinal pigment epithelium.Recent reports using optical coherence tomography (OCT) have shown detectable disruption at the level of the photoreceptor inner segment/outer segment junction and retinal pigment epithelium and that these changes may be reversible over time with restoration of normal outer retinal architecture. However, the resolution of existing OCT technology may not be sensitive enough to …

Damage To Mitochondrial Complex I During Cardiac Ischemia Reperfusion Injury Is Reduced Indirectly By Anti-Anginal Drug Ranolazine, Ashish K. Gadicherla, David F. Stowe, William E. Antholine, Meiying Yang, Amadou K.S. Camara
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Ranolazine, an anti-anginal drug, is a late Na+ channel current blocker that is also believed to attenuate fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial respiratory complex I activity, especially during ischemia. In this study, we investigated if ranolazine's protective effect against cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury is mediated at the mitochondrial level and specifically if respiratory complex I (NADH Ubiquinone oxidoreductase) function is protected. We treated isolated and perfused guinea pig hearts with ranolazine just before 30 min ischemia and then isolated cardiac mitochondria at the end of 30 min ischemia and/or 30 min ischemia followed by 10 min reperfusion. We utilized …

Modulation of mitochondrial free Ca2 + ([Ca2 +]m) is implicated as one of the possible upstream factors that initiates anesthetic-mediated cardioprotection against ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury. To unravel possible mechanisms by which volatile anesthetics modulate [Ca2 +]m and mitochondrial bioenergetics, with implications for cardioprotection, experiments were conducted to spectrofluorometrically measure concentration-dependent effects of isoflurane (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 mM) on the magnitudes and time-courses of [Ca2 +]m and mitochondrial redox state (NADH), membrane potential (ΔΨm), respiration, and matrix volume. Isolated mitochondria from rat hearts were energized with 10 …

Linear Precoding For Relay Networks: A Perspective On Finite-Alphabet Inputs, Weiliang Zeng, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Mingxi Wang, Jianhua Lu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper considers the precoder design for dual-hop amplify-and-forward relay networks and formulates the design from the standpoint of finite-alphabet inputs. in particular, the mutual information is employed as the utility function, which, however, results in a nonlinear and nonconcave problem. This paper exploits the structure of the optimal precoder that maximizes the mutual information and develops a two-step algorithm based on convex optimization and optimization on the Stiefel manifold. by doing so, the proposed algorithm is insensitive to initial point selection and able to achieve a near global optimal precoder solution. Besides, it converges fast and offers high mutual …

Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis presents a statistical method to identify the test escapes. Test often acquires parametric measurements as a function of logical state of a chip. The usual method of classifying chips as pass or fail is to compare each state measurement to a test limit. Subtle manufacturing defects are escaping the test limits due to process variations in deep sub-micron technologies which results in mixing of healthy and faulty parametric test measurements. This thesis identifies the chips with subtle defects by using rank order of the parametric measurements. A hypothesis is developed that a defect is likely to disturb the …

Abstract
Beneficial Reuse of Corrugated Paperboard in Civil Engineering Applications
Gregory Michael Stone
An investigation was conducted to explore the potential for reuse of corrugated paperboard. Corrugated paperboard represents a large fraction of the municipal solid waste generated and discarded in the United States. Alternative applications for reuse can provide a significant benefit by reducing the volume of waste being disposed and by reducing the use of raw materials. Four civil engineering applications were examined for potential beneficial reuse of corrugated paperboard: slurry trench construction, vertical drilling, directional drilling, and controlled low strength materials (CLSM).
For the purpose of this …

A Programmable Liquid Collimator For Both Coded Aperture Adaptive Imaging And Multiplexed Compton Scatter Tomography, Jack G. M. Fitzgerald
Theses and Dissertations
A novel, fully reconfigurable collimator device for gamma-ray and X-ray imaging was built and tested as a coded aperture. The device consisted of 10x10, 5x5x5 mm3 chambers. Each chamber either was filled with an attenuating liquid, stopping photons, or evacuated of the attenuating liquid, allowing the photons to pass through. As the pattern of on and off chambers was manipulated, different, semi-independent views of the gamma-ray source were found. Noise in reconstructed images decreased in all tests. Image reconstruction was performed with correlation methods and Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization (ML-EM). Using 10 mask patterns, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in …

The purpose of this project is to design a thermal vest to be worn by individuals with spinal injuries to help regulate their core body temperature. Individuals with spinal injuries have impaired thermoregulation abilities which increase their susceptibility to succumbing to either heat stroke or hypothermia. This project focused on preventing heat stroke by inducing a cooling mechanism. To provide this cooling mechanism, a thermoelectric cooler was used to chill water in a reservoir. This water is then pumped through tubing sewn into the vest. The chilled water will absorb heat from the human body and return to the reservoir. …
Metonymy And Student Programming Errors, Craig Miller
Metonymy And Student Programming Errors, Craig Miller
Technical Reports
The common occurrence of metonymy in everyday language is considered as a negative bias towards successfully learning to state the correct referent when learning to program. Reported errors from previous studies are surveyed and the analysis reveals a pattern consistent with the use of metonymy, a rhetorical device where the speaker states a referent that is structurally related to the intended referent. This analysis suggests an underlying cause for a class of programming errors and provides directions for further research and instructional interventions.

Interpolation-Based Parameterized Model Order Reduction Of Delayed Systems, Francesco Ferranti, Michel Nakhla, Giulio Antonini, Tom Dhaene, Luc Knockaert, Albert E. Ruehli
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Three-dimensional electromagnetic methods are fundamental tools for the analysis and design of high-speed systems. These methods often generate large systems of equations, and model order reduction (MOR) methods are used to reduce such a high complexity. When the geometric dimensions become electrically large or signal waveform rise times decrease, time delays must be included in the modeling. Design space optimization and exploration are usually performed during a typical design process that consequently requires repeated simulations for different design parameter values. Efficient performing of these design activities calls for parameterized model order reduction (PMOR) methods, which are able to reduce large …

Assessing Network Security Through Automated Attack Graph Based Multi-Level Penetration Testing, Ahmed Mohamed Hassan
Assessing Network Security Through Automated Attack Graph Based Multi-Level Penetration Testing, Ahmed Mohamed Hassan
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Assessing network security can be done in many different ways like applying penetration testing against target network. Penetration testing follows actual steps like reconnaissance, scanning, exploit and logical access to compromised hosts. When attacker compromises a machine, he uses it as a pivot for attacking other machines and getting access to them. An attacker continues in this process till he explores the entire target network or till he reaches his endeavor. This shows that attacks are not a single step but, to reach attackers' goal, the attacker has to go through multiple steps. Many of the available exploitation tools depend …
