Investigating Various Propulsion Systems For An External Attachment For A Controlled-Manual De-Orbit Of The Hubble Space Telescope, Nelson De Guia

Aerospace Engineering

This reports explains the results for a proposed senior project. This project concerns the Hubble Space Telescope, and exploring the possibility of having an external propulsion attachment for a manual de-orbit. The Hubble Space Telescope was proposed to return to Earth via the Space Shuttle. Although, through the current U.S. Space Administration, the Space Shuttle has been retired before the Hubble Space Telescope was retrieved. By completing this project, the results could provide insight to what type of propulsion would best de-orbit the Hubble upon its retirement. Different propulsion systems were considered to attempt to determine an optimal attachment, varying …

Stack Aware Threshold Voltage Assignment In 3-D Multicore Designs, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy Mar 2012

Stack Aware Threshold Voltage Assignment In 3-D Multicore Designs, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Due to the inherent nature of heat flow in 3-D integrated circuits, stacked dies exhibit a wide range of thermal characteristics. The temperature of dies progressively increases with increasing distance from the heat sink. This heterogeneous temperature profile coupled with the strong dependence of leakage on temperature and process variation plays havoc in achieving system level energy efficiency in such systems, complicating the task of power provisioning in 3-D multicores. In this paper, we address this power provisioning challenge in 3-D ICs by advocating a novel stack aware microprocessor design paradigm, where the circuit designers are aware of the intended …

Privacy Protection Framework With Defined Policies For Service-Oriented Architecture, David S. Allison, Miriam Am Capretz, Hany F. Elyamany, Shuying Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a computer systems design concept which aims to achieve reusability and integration in a distributed environment through the use of autonomous, loosely coupled, interoperable abstractions known as services. In order to interoperate, communication between services is very important due to their autonomous nature. This communication provides services with their functional strengths, but also creates the opportunity for the loss of privacy. In this paper, a Privacy Protection Framework for Service-Oriented Architecture (PPFSOA) is described. In this framework, a Privacy Service (PS) is used in combination with privacy policies to create privacy contracts that outline what can …

Peridynamic Models For Dynamic Brittle Fracture, Wenke Hu Mar 2012

Peridynamic Models For Dynamic Brittle Fracture, Wenke Hu

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Damage and failure in composite materials under dynamic loading has been extensively studied in experiments for several decades. Composite materials exhibit various damage and failure patterns under different loading rates, such as splitting and branching. Classical models cannot directly be applied to problems with discontinuous fields. A new nonlocal continuum model, peridynamics, has been proposed with the goal of solving dynamic fracture problems.

The J-integral has the physical significance of energy flow into the crack tip region. We present a rigorous derivation for the formulation of the J-integral in peridynamics using the crack infinitesimal virtual extension approach. We …

Towards Formalizing Non-Monotonic Reasoning In Physics: Logical Approach Based On Physical Induction And Its Relation To Kolmogorov Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2012

Towards Formalizing Non-Monotonic Reasoning In Physics: Logical Approach Based On Physical Induction And Its Relation To Kolmogorov Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To formalize some types of non-monotonic reasoning in physics, researchers have proposed an approach based on Kolmogorov complexity. Inspired by Vladimir Lifschitz's belief that many features of reasoning can be described on a purely logical level, we show that an equivalent formalization can be described in purely logical terms: namely, in terms of physical induction.

One of the consequences of this formalization is that the set of not-abnormal states is (pre-)compact. We can therefore use Lifschitz's result that when there is only one state that satisfies a given equation (or system of equations), then we can algorithmically find this state. …

A Three-Dimensional Inverse Finite Element Analysis Of The Heel Pad, Snehal Chokhandre, Jason P. Halloran, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Ahmet Erdemir

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Quantification of plantar tissue behavior of the heel pad is essential in developing computational models for predictive analysis of preventive treatment options such as footwear for patients with diabetes. Simulation based studies in the past have generally adopted heel pad properties from the literature, in return using heel-specific geometry with material properties of a different heel. In exceptional cases, patient-specific material characterization was performed with simplified two-dimensional models, without further evaluation of a heel-specific response under different loading conditions. The aim of this study was to conduct an inverse finite element analysis of the heel in order to calculate heel-specific …

System For Detection Of Malicious Wireless Device Patterns, Shikhar P. Acharya, R. Arora, Ivan G. Guardiola Mar 2012

System For Detection Of Malicious Wireless Device Patterns, Shikhar P. Acharya, R. Arora, Ivan G. Guardiola

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The research within presents the use of Hidden Markov Models (HMM) for the detection of wireless devices in highly noisy environments using their unintended electromagnetic emissions (UEE). All electromagnetic devices emit such radiation that is unique to the electronics, housing, and other device attributes. This pattern recognition system can provide continuous detection analysis and can provide ideal information regarding the distance to an unknown device. An experiment was performed where UEE of a device was detected by a spectrum analyzer. Experimental result shows that our model can accurately detect if there is a device nearby emitting UEE or not.

Nonlinear Dynamic Model-Based Adaptive Control Of A Solenoid-Valve System, Dongbin Lee, C. Nataraj, P. Naseradinmousavi Mar 2012

Nonlinear Dynamic Model-Based Adaptive Control Of A Solenoid-Valve System, Dongbin Lee, C. Nataraj, P. Naseradinmousavi

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

In this paper, a nonlinear model-based adaptive control approach is proposed for a solenoid-valve system. The challenge is that solenoids and butterfly valves have uncertainties in multiple parameters in the nonlinear model; various kinds of physical appearance such as size and stroke, dynamic parameters including inertia, damping, and torque coefficients, and operational parameters especially, pipe diameters and flow velocities. These uncertainties are making the system not only difficult to adjust to the environment, but also further complicated to develop the appropriate control approach for meeting the system objectives. The main contribution of this research is the application of adaptive control …

Dynamics Of Surface-Coupled Microcantilevers In Force Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy - Magnetic Vs. Dither Piezo Excitation, Xin Xu, Marisol Koslowski, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

Force modulation atomic force microscopy is widely used for mapping the nanoscale mechanical properties of heterogeneous or composite materials using low frequency excitation of a microcantilever scanning the surface. Here we show that the excitation mode - magnetic or dither piezo, has a major influence on the surface-coupled microcantilever dynamics. Not only is the observed material property contrast inverted between these excitation modes but also the frequency response of the surface-coupled cantilever in the magnetic mode is near-ideal with a clear resonance peak and little phase distortion thus enabling quantitative mapping of the local mechanical properties. A Streamlined Strategy For Biohydrogen Production With Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, An Alkaliphilic Bacterium, Matthew B. Begemann, Melanie R. Mormile, Oliver C. Sitton, Judy D. Wall, Dwayne A. Elias Mar 2012

A Streamlined Strategy For Biohydrogen Production With Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, An Alkaliphilic Bacterium, Matthew B. Begemann, Melanie R. Mormile, Oliver C. Sitton, Judy D. Wall, Dwayne A. Elias

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biofuels are anticipated to enable a shift from fossil fuels for renewable transportation and manufacturing fuels, with biohydrogen considered attractive since it could offer the largest reduction of global carbon budgets. Currently, lignocellulosic biohydrogen production remains inefficient with pretreatments that are heavily fossil fuel-dependent. However, bacteria using alkali-treated biomass could streamline biofuel production while reducing costs and fossil fuel needs. An alkaliphilic bacterium, Halanaerobium hydrogeniformans, is described that is capable of biohydrogen production at levels rivaling neutrophilic strains, but at pH 11 and hypersaline conditions. H. hydrogeniformans ferments a variety of 5-and 6-carbon sugars derived from hemicellulose and cellulose …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A p-type InGaN hole reservoir layer (HRL) was designed and incorporated in GaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to enhance hole injection efficiency and alleviate efficiency droop. The fabricated LEDs with p-type HRL exhibited higher light output power, smaller emission energy shift and broadening as compared to its counterpart. Based on electrical and optical characteristics analysis and numerical simulation, these improvements are mainly attributed to the alleviated band bending in the last couple of quantum well and electron blocking layer, and thus better hole injection efficiency. Meanwhile, the efficiency droop can be effectively mitigated when the p-InGaN HRL was used.

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Quantifying the Life Cycle Benefits of Performance-Based Design in Sustainable Design

David Carmona

For this thesis, a method is developed and tested for use with performance based design to quantify the sustainable and financial benefits of designing buildings to a structural performance level higher than Life-Safety. This paper starts to answer the question, “which would be a better investment: build structures to a performance level of Immediate Occupancy (IO) with the likelihood of less damage and downtime after an earthquake or continue to build to the building code’s implied minimum performance level of Life-Safety (LS)?”

An ASCE 7-05 designed …

Nonlinear Uav Flight Control Using Command Filtered Backstepping, Brian M. Borra Mar 2012

Nonlinear Uav Flight Control Using Command Filtered Backstepping, Brian M. Borra

Master's Theses

The aim of this effort is to implement a nonlinear flight control architecture, specifically flight path control via command filtered backstepping, for use in AME UAS's Fury® 1500 unmanned flying wing aircraft. Backstepping is a recursive, control-effort minimizing, constructive design procedure that interlaces the choice of a Lyapunov function with the design of feedback control. It allows the use of certain plant states to act as intermediate, virtual controls, for others breaking complex high order systems into a sequence of simpler lower-order design tasks.

Work herein is a simplified implementation based on publications by Farrell, Sharma, and Polycarpou. Online approximation …

Developing And Implementing Strategies To Address “Freddie Freeroader”, David Q. Hunsucker, Mark S. Spellman, Mark Bell

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Although the majority Kentucky’s citizens pay their fair share of motor vehicle registration taxes, there are indications that a number of citizens evade motor vehicle property and usage tax through a variety of means. Some individuals license their cars in states that have no, or very low, property taxes on motor vehicles; others abuse the use of temporary tags, or simply fail to renew the registration on their vehicles. As a result, Kentucky is losing income that would be used to repair the state’s roadways and fund local services such as schools, libraries, health departments, and police and fire services. …

Theory For Dynamic Longitudinal Dispersion In Fractures And Rivers With Poiseuille Flow, Lichun Wang, M. Bayani Cardenas, Wen Deng, Philip C. Bennett Mar 2012

Theory For Dynamic Longitudinal Dispersion In Fractures And Rivers With Poiseuille Flow, Lichun Wang, M. Bayani Cardenas, Wen Deng, Philip C. Bennett

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a theory for dynamic longitudinal dispersion coefficient (D) for transport by Poiseuille flow, the foundation for models of many natural systems, such as in fractures or rivers. Our theory describes the mixing and spreading process from molecular diffusion, through anomalous transport, and until Taylor dispersion. D is a sixth order function of fracture aperture (b) or river width (W). The time (T) and length (L) scales that separate preasymptotic and asymptotic dispersive transport behavior are T = b2/(4D m), where Dm is the molecular diffusion …

Assessing Aviation E-Marketplaces: A Mmulti-Criteria Approach., Emilio Esposito, Pietro Evangelista, Michele Mastroianni, Renato Passaro, Edward Sweeney, Claudia-Maria Wagner

Books/Book chapters

After a proliferation of logistics e-Marketplaces during the dot.com boom of 1998-2000, there has been a high rate of failure and survivals are developing much more slowly than expected. This is the case in the aviation industry where a large number of B2B e-Marketplaces emerged according to the focus of aviation companies’ strategies on electronic B2B in the late 1990s. However, the current use of e-Marketplaces in the industry is low and many of them have ceased trading. The traditional e-Marketplaces model has been characterised by poor quality portals and a lack of technical standards. Such an approach is unsustainable …
