Creation Of Large Scale Face Dataset Using Single Training Image, Qun Wang
Creation Of Large Scale Face Dataset Using Single Training Image, Qun Wang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Face recognition (FR) has become one of the most successful applications of image analysis and understanding in computer vision. The learning-based model in FR is considered as one of the most favorable problem-solving methods to this issue, which leads to the requirement of large training data sets in order to achieve higher recognition accuracy. However, the availability of only a limited number of face images for training a FR system is always a common problem in practical applications. A new framework to create a face database from a single input image for training purposes is proposed in this dissertation research. …

Static And Impact Load Response Of Reinforced Concrete Beams And Slabs With Nsm-Cfrp Retrofitting, Nakul Ramanna-Sanjeevaiah
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The use of Near-Surface Mounted Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (NSM-CFRP) reinforcement such as carbon FRP strips holds a high potential for increasing the flexural strength of reinforced concrete members. In comparison to externally bonded CFRP laminates, NSM-CFRP reinforcement approach has several advantages. The main advantages include increased stiffness and strength, better bonding, the possibility of anchoring the reinforcement into adjacent members, and minimal installation time. Thus, the structural engineers worldwide are developing a considerable interest in practical applications of the NSM-CFRP reinforcement technique. A considerable amount of research is still needed in order to fully benefit from this method not …
Spatial Analysis Of Travel Behavior And Response To Traveler Information, Xin Wang
Spatial Analysis Of Travel Behavior And Response To Traveler Information, Xin Wang
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Transportation planners have long recognized that it is urgent to integrate emerging spatial analysis with travel behavior studies. A clearer understanding of the spatial interactions among travelers and the complex environment they face has the potential to reap benefits of the ongoing technologies of travel behavior, spatial analysis and Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS).
Considering that spatial patterns have been overlooked in the literature of travel behavior and ATIS, the main objective of this research is to use robust methods of spatial analysis to enhance the understanding of how the associations between traveler decisions, built environment and socio-demographic characteristics are …

Image-Guided Robotic Dental Implantation With Natural-Root-Formed Implants, Xiaoyan Sun
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Dental implantation is now recognized as the standard of the care for tooth replacement. Although many studies show high short term survival rates greater than 95%, long term studies (> 5 years) have shown success rates as low as 41.9%. Reasons affecting the long term success rates might include surgical factors such as limited accuracy of implant placement, lack of spacing controls, and overheating during the placement.
In this dissertation, a comprehensive solution for improving the outcome of current dental implantation is presented, which includes computer-aided preoperative planning for better visualization of patient-specific information and automated robotic site-preparation for superior …

The influence of the beam geometry on the quality factor and resonance frequency of resonant silicon cantilever beams vibrating in their fundamental in-plane flexural mode in water has been investigated. Compared to cantilevers vibrating in their first out-of-plane flexural mode, utilizing the in-plane mode results in reduced damping and reduced mass loading by the surrounding fluid. Quality factors as high as 86 have been measured in water for cantilevers with a 20 μm thick silicon layer. Based on the experimental data, design guidelines are established for beam dimensions that ensure maximal Q-factors and minimal mass loading by the surrounding …

Magnetoplasmon Resonance In A Two-Dimensional Electron System Driven Into A Zero-Resistance State, A. T. Hatke, M. A. Zudov, J. D. Watson, Michael J. Manfra
Birck and NCN Publications
We report on a very strong, and a rather sharp, photoresistance peak originating from a dimensional magnetoplasmon resonance (MPR) in a high-mobility GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well driven by microwave radiation into a zero-resistance state (ZRS). The analysis of the MPR signal reveals a negative background, providing experimental evidence for the concept of absolute negative resistance associated with the ZRS. When the system is further subject to a dc field, the maxima of microwave-induced resistance oscillations decay away and the system reveals a state with close-to-zero differential resistance. The MPR peak, on the other hand, remains essentially unchanged, indicating robust Ohmic behavior …

Low-Loss Meta-Atom For Improved Resonance Response, Derrick Langley, Ronald Coutu Jr., Peter J. Collins
Faculty Publications
Measurements of a meta-atom integrated with a low noise amplifier into the split-ring resonator are presented. A comparison is made between baseline meta-atoms and one integrated with a GaAs low noise amplifier. S-parameter measurements in a RF strip-line show the resonant frequency location. The resonance null is more prominent for the integrated meta-atom. Biasing the low noise amplifier from 0 to 7 VDC showed that the resonant null improved with biasing voltage. As the biasing voltage increases, the transmission null reduced from -11.82 to -23.21 dB for biases from 0 to 7 VDC at resonant frequency.

Algorithms For Visual Maritime Surveillance With Rapidly Moving Camera, Sergiy Fefilatyev
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Visual surveillance in the maritime domain has been explored for more than a decade. Although it has produced a number of working systems and resulted in a mature technology, surveillance has been restricted to the port facilities or areas close to the coastline assuming a fixed-camera scenario. This dissertation presents several contributions in the domain of maritime surveillance. First, a novel algorithm for open-sea visual maritime surveillance is introduced. We explore a challenging situation with a camera mounted on a buoy or other floating platform. The developed algorithm detects, localizes, and tracks ships in the field of view of the …

Effect Of “Ground Truth” On Image Binarization, Elisa H. Barney Smith, Chang An
Effect Of “Ground Truth” On Image Binarization, Elisa H. Barney Smith, Chang An
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Image binarization has a large effect on the rest of the document image analysis processes in character recognition. Algorithm development is still a major focus of research. Evaluation of image binarization has been done by comparison of the result of OCR systems on images binarized by different methods. That has been criticized in that the binarization alone is not evaluated, but rather how it interacts with the downstream processes. Recently pixel accurate "ground truth" images have been introduced for use in binarization algorithm evaluation. This has been shown to be open to interpretation. The choice of binarization ground truth affects …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mode I (tensile) fracture is the most commonly observed failure in Geostructure's resulting from cracks in soil. Direct or indirect tensile tests have been used to evaluate the tensile strength of geomaterials. in this paper, the unconfined penetration device and experimental procedure were modified to reduce measurement errors. It was then used to determine the tensile strength of compacted soil. Factors influencing the tensile strength of the compacted soil, including the plasticity index, rate of loading, and size of specimen were discussed in detail, as well as its reliability. Experimental results indicated that the modified, unconfined penetration technique is sufficiently …

Air sparging is one of the most popular remediation technologies. However, it is limited to a small radius of influence (ROI) surrounding the air injection well. Hence, there have been several efforts to improve its effectiveness. To study the possibility of improving the effectivity of air sparging electromagnetic (EM) waves, an easily visible analogous problem (dye transport in water) is studied in this paper. In order to quantify the effects of EM stimulation on flow of an inert, nonreactive dye in water, EM-stimulated and unstipulated dye transport experiments tests were performed and compared. To quantify this interaction, both dye transport …

Scale Model Shake Table Testing Of Seismic Earth Pressures In Soft Clay, Robb Moss, R.E. Noche
Civil and Environmental Engineering
There is much uncertainty in seismic earth pressures for basement wall design and retaining wall design in clay soil. The research presented herein uses a scale model testing platform on a 1g shake table to measure the distribution and magnitude of seismic earth pressures for the prototype soil conditions of San Francisco Young Bay Mud (YBM). Similitude scaling of the dynamic soil properties, the wall dimensions, and the input time histories (among other variables) affords accurate modeling of the prototype scale wall. For basement conditions, inertial soil structure interaction (SSI) effects are included in the experiments. Care is taken to …

Increasing Reliability Of A Small 2-Stroke Internal Combustion Engine For Dynamically Changing Attitudes, Steven C. Crosbie
Theses and Dissertations
Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) typically utilize commercial internal combustion engines (ICE) as their power sources. These engines are designed to run at sea level, but these aircraft are often pressed into service at higher altitudes where the performance characteristics deteriorate. A Brison 95cc two-stroke engine's performance characteristics at altitude are investigated using a test facility that can measure these characteristics over a range of pressures and temperatures. With its stock carburetor at sea level static (SLS) conditions, the engine makes 5.5 peak horsepower (hp) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) ranged from 1.2-4.0 lb/(hp-hr). At 10,000 feet conditions, the peak …

Using Avhrr-Based Vegetation Health Indices For Estimation Of Potato Yield In Bangladesh, Rahman A., Kaiser Khan, Nir Y. Krakauer, Leonid Roytman, Kogan F.
Publications and Research
We developed a model correlating Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based Temperature Condition Index (TCI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) with potato yield in Bangladesh. Weekly TCI and VCI Indices for 1993–2005 along with official potato yield statistics were used for model development. We found a strong correlation between inter annual variation in potato yield and TCI and VCI during the critical period of potato growth (vegetative phase and tuber initiation), mid-December to mid-January. Principal component regression (PCR) was used to construct a model to predict potato yield as function of TCI and VCI. The model explained about 75% of …

Evaluation Of The Thorax Of Manduca Sexta For Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle Applications, Alex C. Hollenbeck
Theses and Dissertations
The tobacco hornworm hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) provides an excellent model from which to garner knowledge pertaining to the development of a Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FWMAV). Insect-sized FWMAVs will be used by the future warfighter for reconnaissance, nuclear/chemical/biological hazard sensing, and targeting. One of the major challenges facing FWMAV developers is the energetically demanding nature of low Reynolds flapping flight. Investigating the Manduca sexta thorax/wing flapping mechanism as a mechanical system will provide insight into its inherent efficiency. This thesis examined the energetics of the thorax under static loading and dynamic loading using an innovative load-application technique. It was …

Development And Application Of An F/M Based Anaerobic Digestion Model And The Rt-Ribosyn Molecular Biology Method, Matthew Raymond Cutter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A simple anaerobic digestion model has been developed for a continuously-stirred tank reactor (CSTR), which links the specific biogas production rate to the food/microorganism ratio (F/M). The model treats the various microbial populations involved in the sequential biological processes involved in anaerobic digestion as a composite and links the entire biomass specific growth rate directly to the specific biogas production rate. The model was calibrated by determining the specific gas production rate for a range of F/M values using a municipal wastewater seed sludge. The model predictions for steady-state biogas production rates were compared to observed biogas production and volatile …
