The Impact Of Increased Collateral Flow On Transverse Arteriolar Microvascular Tree Morphology, David Danzeiser
The Impact Of Increased Collateral Flow On Transverse Arteriolar Microvascular Tree Morphology, David Danzeiser
Master's Theses
The goal of this study was to understand how arteriogenesis impacts transverse arteriolar tree structure. The previous process involved a vascular casting technique that utilized black India ink as the casting agent and manual measurement of vessel morphology with ImageJ. This study decreased the complexity of the casted samples by using a casting compound called Microfil. Microfil’s viscosity can be adjusted and through experimentation, a viscosity was found that stopped at the capillary level, allowing only the arterial side of the circulation to be casted. A macro in ImageJ was written to help with morphological measurement by bundling vessel length …

In some of these plates, inhibition zones were observed …
Evaluating Alternative Hydraulic Solutions To Limit Nutrient Contamination Of An Aquifer In Southern California, Jake Mendoza Perry
Evaluating Alternative Hydraulic Solutions To Limit Nutrient Contamination Of An Aquifer In Southern California, Jake Mendoza Perry
Master's Theses
Many small communities depend on groundwater sources for drinking water and they often use septic tanks for their sewer system needs. However, nitrates and other pollutants from septic systems can percolate to the aquifers and deteriorate quality of the groundwater, threatening the public health. This study has developed a groundwater model using Visual MODFLOW for an aquifer that is used as a water supply source for the cities of Beaumont and Cherry Valley, California. Septic systems are the suspected major source of nitrate contamination of the aquifer. The model has been developed to clarify the extent of interactions between nitrate …
Improving Backup And Restore Performance For Deduplication-Based Cloud Backup Services, Stephen Mkandawire
Improving Backup And Restore Performance For Deduplication-Based Cloud Backup Services, Stephen Mkandawire
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The benefits provided by cloud computing and the space savings offered by data deduplication make it attractive to host data storage services like backup in the cloud. Data deduplication relies on comparing fingerprints of data chunks, and store them in the chunk index, to identify and remove redundant data, with an ultimate goal of saving storage space and network bandwidth.
However, the chunk index presents a bottleneck to the throughput of the backup operation. While several solutions to address deduplication throughput have been proposed, the chunk index is still a centralized resource and limits the scalability of both storage capacity …

Evaluation Of Decellularization Procedures For Porcine Arteries, Charles Clapp
Evaluation Of Decellularization Procedures For Porcine Arteries, Charles Clapp
Biomedical Engineering
Coronary artery disease has become the leading cause of death in the United States, with over 425,000 deaths in 2006. Stenting has evolved into the preferred preventative technique for myocardial infarction by opening up an occluded artery, due to its low invasiveness compared to the alternative of coronary artery bypass grafting. Bare metal stents have been improved by coating with anti-proliferative drugs to advance their effects, but even drug eluting stents still have a risk of restenosis, thrombus formation, and necessary revascularization. Continual advancement in stent design necessitates faster, effective pre-clinical evaluation techniques. Kristen Cardinal, Ph.D., developed the blood vessel …
Development Of Best Management Practice Design Guidance For Roadway Applications In Nebraska, Benedict Vacha
Development Of Best Management Practice Design Guidance For Roadway Applications In Nebraska, Benedict Vacha
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Runoff from roadways carries pollutants which may be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. The primary pollutants of concern for roadway runoff are solids and heavy metals, particularly cadmium, copper, and zinc. Roadway runoff falls under the legislation of the Clean Water Act (CWA) via the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). CWA regulates discharge of nonpoint source pollutants, such as roadway runoff, by issuing permits to public entities which manage Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s). Part of the Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) permitting requirement is to create a design guide for Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to remediate roadway …
Microstructure Selection Of Sm–Co–Al Alloys To Increase Magnetization, Brian Dick
Microstructure Selection Of Sm–Co–Al Alloys To Increase Magnetization, Brian Dick
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
An ever increasing demand for higher performing magnets drives the need for new and innovative methods to achieve this goal. Sm-Co rare earth permanent magnets have a unique eutectic microstructure that, through refinement, could become a two-phase magnet which would significantly increase their energy product. The eutectic structure of Sm8Co92 is comprised of αCo rods embedded within a Sm2Co17 matrix. If the rods are small enough to encourage exchange coupling and the matrix is smaller than the single domain limit, then an efficient two-phase magnet is created.
Refining the Co rods and matrix size …
Error Reduction And Effect Of Step Size In Adjustment Calculus For Cam Applications, Sai Siddhartha Nudurupati
Error Reduction And Effect Of Step Size In Adjustment Calculus For Cam Applications, Sai Siddhartha Nudurupati
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Any measurement, however carefully done, will never be free from errors. Similarly, machining of cams for automobiles is prone to contain errors. These errors are naturally a part and parcel of cam manufacturing. The nature of deviations of the manufactured cam profile from the theoretical cam determines its usability. Sometimes, allowable deviations in high speed cams may be in the order of 2540 µm. Larger deviations will disqualify the cams for applications.
Velocity and acceleration of the cam are estimated from the measured displacement of the cam follower during quality control implementation. This data helps in eliminating the unfit cams. …

We examine the value of extended formation flight in the context of airline operations. The study is based on a bi-level route optimization framework. The aircraft performance model includes the effects of rolled-up wakes, formation heterogeneity, and formation-induced compressibility effects. We incorporate airline economics to understand the trade-off between speed and drag savings in the context of formation flight. The application of formation flight to a representative South African Airlines (SAA) long-haul route network can reduce fuel burn by over 4.6% or reduce direct operating cost by 2.1%. The savings increase to 6.8% in fuel or 2.4% in cost when …
Message Passing Algorithms For Map Estimation Using Dc Programming, Akshat Kumar, Shlomo Zilberstein, Marc Toussaint
Message Passing Algorithms For Map Estimation Using Dc Programming, Akshat Kumar, Shlomo Zilberstein, Marc Toussaint
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We address the problem of finding the most likely assignment or MAP estimation in a Markov random field. We analyze the linear programming formulation of MAP through the lens of difference of convex functions (DC) programming, and use the concave-convex procedure (CCCP) to develop efficient message-passing solvers. The resulting algorithms are guaranteed to converge to a global optimum of the well-studied local polytope, an outer bound on the MAP marginal polytope. To tighten the outer bound, we show how to combine it with the mean-field based inner bound and, again, solve it using CCCP. We also identify a useful relationship …
A Discrete Event Simulation Of Network Centric Operations: Modeling Unbalanced Combat Configurations In Symmetric Engagements, Mahmoud Turki Khasawneh
A Discrete Event Simulation Of Network Centric Operations: Modeling Unbalanced Combat Configurations In Symmetric Engagements, Mahmoud Turki Khasawneh
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Network Centric Operations (NCO) has been dubbed the most significant revolution in military affairs (RMA) in the past 200 years. The promise of NCO is based on the notion that information sharing and connectivity is fundamental to the effectiveness of a combat force. This due to the ability of a properly networked force to self-synchronize itself as it engages enemy forces. The purposeful arrangement of assets in a combat force is what makes it 'properly networked'. What is a purposeful arrangement of combat assets? How should a force organize to enhance information sharing and connectivity? And how does connectivity within …

Risk Quadruplet: Integrating Assessments Of Threat, Vulnerability, Consequence, And Perception For Homeland Security And Homeland Defense, Kara Norman Hill
Risk Quadruplet: Integrating Assessments Of Threat, Vulnerability, Consequence, And Perception For Homeland Security And Homeland Defense, Kara Norman Hill
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Risk for homeland security and homeland defense is often considered to be a function of threat, vulnerability, and consequence. But what is that function? And are we defining and measuring these terms consistently? Threat, vulnerability, and consequence assessments are conducted, often separately, and data from one assessment could be drastically different from that of another due to inconsistent definitions of terms and measurements, differing data collection methods, or varying data sources. It has also long been a challenge to integrate these three disparate assessments to establish an overall picture of risk to a given asset. Further, many agencies conduct these …

A comparative study of de-centralized and centralized controllers when used with real EMS Maglev Systems is introduced. This comparison is divided into two parts. Part I is concerned with numerical simulation and experimental testing on a two ton six-magnet EMS Maglev vehicle. Levitation and lateral control with these controllers individually and when including flux feedback control in combination with these controllers to enhance stability are introduced. The centralized controller is better than the de-centralized one when the system is exposed to a lateral disturbing force such as wind gusts. The flux feedback control when combined with de-centralized or centralized controllers …
Synergistic Effect Of Subnanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields And Temperature On The Viability Of Biological Cells, James Thomas Camp
Synergistic Effect Of Subnanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields And Temperature On The Viability Of Biological Cells, James Thomas Camp
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Pulsed electric fields have been used to induce a biological response in cells, and at sufficient energy, can cause cell death. By reducing the pulse duration from presently used nanosecond to subnanosecond ranges, the electric field can be delivered to biological tissue non-invasively by the use of an antenna instead of electrodes, such as needles. Studies have previously been completed in which the aim was to determine the energy density (electric field strength, number of pulses) required to induce cell death with 800 ps pulses. Based on this data, it was concluded that for pulse durations of 200 ps, with …
Nonosecond Pulsed Electric Field Induced Changes In Dielectric Properties Of Biological Cells, Jie Zhuang
Nonosecond Pulsed Electric Field Induced Changes In Dielectric Properties Of Biological Cells, Jie Zhuang
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Nanosecond pulsed electric field induced biological effects have been a focus of research interests since the new millennium. Promising biomedical applications, e.g. tumor treatment and wound healing, are emerging based on this principle. Although the exact mechanisms behind the nanosecond pulse-cell interactions are not completely understood yet, it is generally believed that charging along the cell membranes (including intracellular membranes) and formation of membrane pores trigger subsequent biological responses, and the number and quality of pores are responsible for the cell fate. The immediate charging response of a biological cell to a nanosecond pulsed electric field exposure relies on the …

Evaluation Of Ocean-Energy Conversion Based On Linear Generator Concepts, Michael Allen Stelzer
Evaluation Of Ocean-Energy Conversion Based On Linear Generator Concepts, Michael Allen Stelzer
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A turbine generator is a device that converts mechanical rotation into electrical energy. Unfortunately, the primary driving force that has been used to provide this rotation has, thus far, been fossil fuels. Although fossil fuels have proven to be a reliable resource to continually supply the growing demand for electrical power, they are not without their financial and environmental drawbacks. With the continuously increasing demand for energy, it is hypothesized that the world may, in time, exhaust this precious natural resource and/or inflict permanent environmental damage upon our planet.
However, motions that occur in nature, such as ocean waves, can …
