Functional Magnetic Nanoparticles, James Gass
Functional Magnetic Nanoparticles, James Gass
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nanoparticle system research and characterization is the focal point of this research and dissertation. In the research presented here, magnetite, cobalt, and ferrite nanoparticle systems have been explored in regard to their magnetocaloric effect (MCE) properties, as well as for use in polymer composites. Both areas of study have potential applications across a wide variety of interdisciplinary fields.
Magnetite nanoparticles have been successfully dispersed in a polymer. The surface chemistry of the magnetic nanoparticle proves critical to obtaining a homogenous and well separated high density dispersion in PMMA. Theoretical studies found in the literature have indicated that surface interface energy …

Characterization Of Via Structures In Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards With An Equivalent Transmission-Line Model, Siming Pan, Jun Fan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vias are typical discontinuities for high-speed signal transmission in printed circuit boards (PCBs). This paper proposes an equivalent multiconductor transmission-line model for via structures in multilayer PCBs. the proposed model is based on the physic-Based circuit model, taking into account distributed effects. Various via structures with arbitrary via number, trace connections, and via stubs can be effectively handled in the equivalent transmission-line model, which is sufficiently accurate and fast to be integrated into circuit simulators for via and link-path analysis. with the proposed model, well-known transmission-line theories can be borrowed for via modeling and characterization for signal integrity in high-speed …

Optimized Power Allocation For Packet Retransmissions Of Non-Gaussian Inputs Through Sequential Awgn Channels, Xiao Liang, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao
Optimized Power Allocation For Packet Retransmissions Of Non-Gaussian Inputs Through Sequential Awgn Channels, Xiao Liang, Zhi Ding, Chengshan Xiao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work investigates the optimization of power allocation for hybrid-ARQ (H-ARQ) retransmissions of non-Gaussian inputs over a bank of independent parallel Gaussian channels. We establish a general solution for maximizing generic transceiver objective utility functions that are monotonically non-decreasing and concave function with respect to the accumulated signal to noise ratio (SNR). Specifically, we investigate optimized solutions under two performance metrics, namely, the mutual information (MI) and the union bound of symbol error rate (UBSER) under maximal ratio combining (MRC) reception. We establish that efficient utilization of parallel channels in H-ARQ retransmissions requires sequential updating of signal-channel pairing as well …

Generating Minimal Pair-Wise Covering Test Suites, Luis C. Gutierrez ^, Martine Ceberio *
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012
Software is ubiquitous and needs to be reliable. Software testing therefore plays an important role in software development. Proper testing a software system informs about its quality and reliability so as to prevent unexpected behavior during system execution. One of the methods to prevent failures consists in testing a system under different input values, but when all possible input values are tested, an impractical number of test cases might result. In software testing, pair-wise testing is a combinatorial technique which uses combination of pair input values to generate test cases. Using pair-wise testing dramatically reduces the number of test cases, …

The Implementation Of A Visco-Hyperelastic Numerical Material Model For Simulating The Behaviour Of Polymer Foam Materials, Conor Briody, Barry Duignan, Stephen Jerrams, John Tiernan

Polyurethane foam has been in use for some time in wheelchair seating systems as it offers good pressure relieving capabilities in most cases. However, little characterisation work has gone into seating foam materials by comparison with conventional elastomeric materials. Accurate material models could allow better prediction of foam in-service behaviour, which could potentially improve seating design practises. The objective of this work was to develop an approach for the validation of hyperelastic and viscoelastic material model parameters used to simulate polyurethane foam behaviour. Material parameters were identified from relevant test procedures and implemented in a Finite Element simulation of an …

Supporting Developer-Onboarding With Enhanced Resource Finding And Visual Exploration, Jianguo Wang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Understanding the basic structure of a code base and a development team are essential to get new developers up to speed in a software development project. Developers do so through the process of early experimentation with code and the creation of mental models of technical and social structures in a project. However, getting up-to-speed in a new project can be challenging due to difficulties in: finding the right place to begin explorations, expanding the focus to determine relevant resources for tasks, and identifying dependencies across project elements to gain a high-level overview of project structures. In this thesis, I first …

We report on the growth and electrical characterization of a series of two-dimensional hole systems (2DHSs) used to study the density dependence of low temperature mobility in 20-nm GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. The hole density was controlled by changing the Al mole fraction and the setback of the delta-doping layer. We varied the density over a range from 1.8 x 10(10) cm(-2) to 1.9 x 10(11) cm(-2) finding a nonmonotonic dependence of mobility on density at T = 0.3 K. Surprisingly, a peak mobility of 2.3 x 10(6) cm(2)/Vs was measured at a density of 6.5 x 10(10) cm(-2), with further …

SOECS Exhibitions
The goal of this activity was to develop an interactive flow visualization cell to demonstrate dynamic interaction between two fluids, olive oil and air, each occupying one half of the cell. The goal was met and a museum quality unit was created as shown in Figure 1 (download document to view). Thanks to Dean Brigid Welch’s support, the unit is installed at the University Library next to the Information Commons for the campus community to enjoy the inherent beauty and appreciate complexity of fluid flow.

Internal photoemission measurements of barriers for electrons at interfaces between GaAs(111) and atomic-layer deposited Al2O3 indicate that changing the GaAs polar crystal face orientation from the Ga-terminated (111)A to the As-terminated (111)B has no effect on the barrier height and remains the same as at the non-polar GaAs(100)/Al2O3 interface. Moreover, the presence of native oxide on GaAs(111) or passivation of this surface with sulphur also have no measurable influence on the GaAs(111)/Al2O3 barrier. These results suggest that the orientation and composition-sensitive surface dipoles conventionally observed at GaAs surfaces are effectively compensated at GaAs/oxide interfaces. Assessing The Validity Of Brain Glucose Concentration Measurement Using Microdialysis, Damon Anthony Vinciguerra
Assessing The Validity Of Brain Glucose Concentration Measurement Using Microdialysis, Damon Anthony Vinciguerra
Master’s Theses
Brain functions, such as learning, orchestrating locomotion, memory recall, and processing information, all require glucose as a source of energy. During these functions, the glucose concentration decreases as the glucose is being consumed by brain cells. By measuring this drop in concentration, it is possible to determine which parts of the brain are used during specific functions and consequently, how much energy the brain requires to complete the function. One way to measure in vivo brain glucose levels is with a microdialysis probe. The drawback of this analytical procedure, as with many steadystate fluid flow systems, is that the probe …
Understanding Operating Speed Variation Of Multilane Highways With New Access Density Definition And Simulation Outputs, Bing Huang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traffic speed is generally considered a core issue in roadway safety. Previous studies show that faster travel is not necessarily associated with an increased risk of being involved in a crash. When vehicles travel at the same speed in the same direction (even high speeds, as on interstates), they are not passing one another and cannot collide as long as they maintain the same speed. Conversely, the frequency of crashes increases when vehicles are traveling at different rates of speed. There is no doubt that the greater speed variation is, the greater the number of interactions among vehicles is, resulting …

A crucially important aspect for mission-critical robotic operations is ensuring as best as possible that an autonomous system be able to complete its task. In a project for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) we are developing methods to provide such guidance, specifically for counter-Weapons of Mass Destruction (C-WMD) missions. In this paper, we describe the scenarios under consideration, the performance measures and metrics being developed, and an outline of the mechanisms for providing performance guarantees.
