Developing A Family Of Curves For The Hec-18 Scour Equation, Timothy Calappi, Carol J. Miller, Donald Carpenter, Travis Dahl
Developing A Family Of Curves For The Hec-18 Scour Equation, Timothy Calappi, Carol J. Miller, Donald Carpenter, Travis Dahl
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research Publications
Accurate pier scour predictions are essential to the safe and efficient design of bridge crossings. Current practice uses empirical formulas largely derived from laboratory experiments to predict local scour depth around single-bridge piers. The resulting formulas are hindered by insufficient consideration of scaling effects and hydrodynamic forces. When applied to full-scale designs, these formula deficiencies lead to excessive over prediction of scour depths and increased construction costs. In an effort to improve the predictive capabilities of the HEC-18 scour model, this work uses field-scale data and nonlinear regression to develop a family of equations optimized for various non-cohesive soil conditions. …

Arbitrarily Oriented Biaxially Anisotropic Media: Wave Behavior And Microstrip Antennas, Jennifer Warzala Graham
Arbitrarily Oriented Biaxially Anisotropic Media: Wave Behavior And Microstrip Antennas, Jennifer Warzala Graham
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Dissertations
This dissertation explores the electromagnetic behavior of arbitrarily oriented biaxially anisotropic media. An overview of wave behavior in biaxially anisotropic (or simply biaxial) media is presented. The reflection and transmission behaviors of electromagnetic waves from half-space and two-layer isotropic-biaxial interfaces are studied. The reflection and transmission coefficients are used in the formulation of eigenvector dyadic Green's functions. These Green's functions are employed in full-wave analyses of rectangular microstrip antennas printed on biaxial substrates.
The general characteristics of electrically biaxially anisotropic (biaxial) media are presented including permittivity tensors, optic axes, orientation of the medium, and birefringence. After a detailed discussion of …

Functional And Behavioral Product Information Representation And Consistency Validation For Collaboration In Product Lifecycle Activities, Mehmet Murat Baysal
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations
Information models that represent the function, assembly and behavior of artifacts are critical in the conceptual development of a product and its evaluation. Much research has been conducted in this area; however, existing models do not relate function, behavior and structure in a comprehensive and consistent way. In this work, NIST's Core Product Model (CPM) and the Open Assembly Model (OAM) are extended to integrate product information including function and behavior, with an emphasis on assembly, throughout all phases of product development. For function and flow classification, the NIST functional taxonomy is used to maintain consistency with the literature.

Experimental Investigation Of An Actively Controlled Three-Dimensional Turret Wake, Patrick Ryan Shea
Experimental Investigation Of An Actively Controlled Three-Dimensional Turret Wake, Patrick Ryan Shea
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations
Hemispherical turrets are bluff bodies commonly used to house optical systems on airborne platforms. These bluff bodies develop complex, three-dimensional flow fields that introduce high mean and fluctuating loads to the turret as well as the airframe support structure which reduce the performance of both the optical systems and the aircraft. An experimental investigation of the wake of a three-dimensional, non-conformal turret was performed in a low-speed wind tunnel at Syracuse University to develop a better understanding of the fundamental flow physics associated with the turret wake. The flow field was studied at a diameter based Reynolds number of 550,000 …
Study Of Vocs Transport And Storage In Porous Media And Assemblies, Jing Xu
Study Of Vocs Transport And Storage In Porous Media And Assemblies, Jing Xu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Dissertations
Indoor VOCs concentrations are influenced greatly by the transport and storage of VOCs in building and furnishing materials, majority of which belong to porous media. The transport and storage ability of a porous media for a given VOC can be characterized by its diffusion coefficient and partition coefficient, respectively, and such data are currently lacking. Besides, environmental conditions are another important factor that affects the VOCs emission. The main purposes of this dissertation are: (1) validate the similarity hypothesis between the transport of water vapor and VOCs in porous materials, and help build a database of VOC transport and storage …
A Linear Sampling Multiple Frequency Method For Target Detection, Tyler Bowman
A Linear Sampling Multiple Frequency Method For Target Detection, Tyler Bowman
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the field of inverse scattering problems of electromagnetic imaging, there are many techniques that can be used to detect unknown objects. Generally these methods maintain a direct relationship between the precision of the target shape and the amount of time required to obtain the solution. However, it has been shown that hybridization, or a combination of techniques, can be used to obtain the shape reconstruction that is accurate and less expensive computationally. Previous research in the Computational Electromagnetics Group of Professor El-Shenawee at the University of Arkansas has looked into the use of hybridization by combining the Level Set …
A Study On The Effects Of Solar Power, Jonathan Hayes
A Study On The Effects Of Solar Power, Jonathan Hayes
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The utilization of new and alternative energy sources, specifically solar energy, has been on the rise and will continue to grow as we attempt to diminish our use and dependency on older, nonrenewable energy sources. One of the biggest challenges involved with the use of solar energy, or renewable energy in general, is how to provide this energy for general public use. Some of the limiting factors to this are the efficiency in which solar power can be harvested and converted into usable energy, and the cost of the technology to do this. Recent technological developments have included the microinverter, …

Intravascular catheters used in clinical practice can activate platelets, leading to thrombus formation and stagnation of blood flow. Nitric oxide (NO)-releasing polymers have been shown previously to reduce clot formation on a number of blood contacting devices. In this work, trilaminar NO-releasing silicone catheters were fabricated and tested for their thrombogenicity. All catheters had specifications of L = 6 cm, inner diameter = 21 gauge (0.0723 cm), outer diameter = 12 gauge (0.2052 cm), and NO-releasing layer thickness = 200 ± 11 µm. Control and NO-releasing catheters were characterized in vitro for their NO flux and NO release duration by …

Concrete Design For Traffic Application, Marc Shields
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Inductive charging of electronic devices is a newer technology that is capable of transferring electrical power without physical contact through wiring. Research is currently being done to find and improve ways to implement this technology on electric cars. If this type of technology pas implemented on a large scale throughout much of the country, electrical or hybrid cars could travel across counties and states without depleting their batteries.
The current problem with electric cars is that they have a limited range of travel. Even with larger batteries with much more capacitance, the range of pure electric cars usually does not …
Denial Of Convenience Attack To Smartphones Using A Fake Wi-Fi Access Point, Erich Dondyk
Denial Of Convenience Attack To Smartphones Using A Fake Wi-Fi Access Point, Erich Dondyk
HIM 1990-2015
In this thesis, we consider a novel denial of service attack targeted at popular smartphone operating systems. This type of attack, which we call a Denial of Convenience (DoC) attack, prevents non-technical savvy victims from utilizing data services by exploiting the connectivity management protocol of smartphones' operating systems when encountered with a Wi-Fi access point. By setting up a fake Wi-Fi access point without Internet access (using simple devices such as a laptop), an adversary can prompt a smartphone with enabled Wi-Fi features to automatically terminate a valid mobile broadband connection and connect to this fake Wi-Fi access point. This, …

Fabrication And Transport Studies Of N-Type Ofets Using Aligned Array Carbon Nanotubes Electrodes, Edwards Jimenez
HIM 1990-2015
We present fabrication of n-type organic field effect transistors (OFETs) using densely aligned array carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes. The CNTs were aligned with a high linear density via dielectrophoresis (DEP) from an aqueous solution. In order to fabricate the CNT electrodes, aligned CNTs were cut by using electron beam lithography (EBL) and precise oxygen plasma etching. The n-type OFETs were fabricated in a bottom-contact configuration by depositing a thin film of C60 molecules between the CNT source and drain electrodes, and compared against a controlled C60 OFET with gold electrodes. The electron transport measurements of the OFETs using CNT electrodes …

Testing The Efficiency Of Vertically Aligned Gold Nanowires On A Titanium Needle Implantable Neural Electrodes In The Rattus Norvegicus Hippocampus, Lauren Kegley
Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Miniaturized multi-electrode arrays are MEMS devices that have found use as neural prosthetics (Neuro-MEMS). As implants they can interface with neurons as sensors or actuators and help compensate for loss of sensory input, motor control, or cognitive function. The micro-electrodes, studied here, were developed in-house. They have a vertically aligned gold nanowire array and are mounted on a sturdy fine gauge titanium needle. Hence, the bill of materials and design characteristics encourage its use as neural probe. For this study, a probe was tested in vivo for signal acquisition in the hippocampus of a Rattus Norvegicus (Sprague Dawley Rat). Using …

Assembly Time Modeling Through Connective Complexity Metrics, James L. Mathieson, Bradley A. Wallace, Joshua D. Summers
All CEDAR Publications
This paper presents an approach for the development of surrogate models predicting the assembly time of a system based on complexity metrics of the physical system architecture when detailed geometric information is unavailable. A convention for modelling physical architecture is presented, followed by a sample of 10 analysed systems used for training and three systems used for validation. These systems are evaluated on complexity metrics developed from graph theoretic measures. An example model is developed based on a series of regressions of trends observed within the sample data. This is validated against the systems that are not used to develop …

Thermoplastic matrix composites containing carbon fibers and 4 different resins (TP 1-TP 4) were tested in tension with the fibers at 90 degree to the longitudinal axis following ASTM D 3039-00. The tensile strengths varied from 5.07-13.87 ksi with TP 1 as the strongest, and TP 4 as the weakest. SEM images were taken of the fracture surface of the samples to explore the fiber-matrix interaction. The SEM images showed significantly more wetting of the fibers in the higher strength materials. The SEM images of the two stronger materials showed resin coating the fibers even after fracture while the two …
Evaluation Of An Enrichment Culture That Reductively Dechlorinates Γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane, Christina Anderson
Evaluation Of An Enrichment Culture That Reductively Dechlorinates Γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane, Christina Anderson
All Theses
In a previous study using microcosms from a site contaminated with γ- hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), rapid anaerobic biodegradation of γ-HCH to benzene and chlorobenzene was observed. Enrichment cultures were developed and subsequently transferred to an anaerobic sulfate-free HEPES buffered medium without loss of γ-HCH dechlorination, thus suggesting γ-HCH undergoes anaerobic biodegradation via chlororespiration. The overall objective of this thesis was to further characterize the enrichment culture.
To do so, one specific objective was to determine the effect of vancomycin on γ-HCH in an enrichment culture grown in a sulfate-free HEPES buffered medium using hydrogen as the electron donor. This objective would …

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Diffusion Of O2 Penetrates In Uncrosslinked Polydimethysiloxane (Pdms), Crosslinked Pdms, And Pdms-Based Nanocomposites, Varun Ullal
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study diffusion of O2 molecules in pure polydimethysiloxane (PDMS), crosslinked PDMS, and PDMS-based nanocomposites. The PDMS chains and penetrates are modeled using a hybrid interatomic potential which treats the Si-O atoms along the chain backbone explicitly while coarse-graining the methyl side groups and penetrates. By tracking the diffusion of penetrates in the system and subsequently computing their mean-squared displacement, diffusion coefficients are obtained. In pure PDMS models of varying molecular weight, diffusivity of the O22 penetrates is found to have an inverse relationship with chain length. Simulation models with longer chains …

Design Of Orbital Maneuvers With Aeroassisted Cubesatellites, Stephanie Clark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances within the field of cube satellite technology has allowed for the possible development of a maneuver that utilizes a satellite's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and increased atmospheric density to effectively use lift and drag to implement a noncoplanar orbital maneuver. Noncoplanar maneuvers typically require large quantities of propellant due to the large delta-v that is required. However, similar maneuvers using perturbing forces require little or no propellant to create the delta-v required. This research reported here studied on the effects of lift on orbital changes, those of noncoplanar types in particular, for small satellites without orbital maneuvering thrusters. …
