Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Increasingly high aircraft power demands require that the interactions between an aircraft’s electrical subsystem and the engine subsystem be considered in dynamic, systemlevel tests. Traditionally, system-level dynamics have only been captured in completely assembled aircraft systems. Component-level or subsystem-level optimization is no longer appropriate because highly interdependent dynamics between subsystems only become apparent during system-level analysis. In an effort to reduce the high cost of testing integrated power and propulsion systems in an altitude-simulating wind tunnel, alternatives such as modeling and simulation are considered. Synchronizing and coupling simulations of vastly different time scales is possible, but the resulting system simulation …

Determination Of Phase Equilibria And The Critical Point Using Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations With Monte Carlo Sampling, Sonal Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The two-phase MD technique employed in this work determines the liquid and vapor phase densities from a histogram of molecular densities within phase clusters in the simulation cell using a new Monte Carlo (MC) sampling method. These equilibrium densities are then fitted in conjunction with known critical-point scaling laws to obtain the critical temperature, and the critical density. This MC post-processing method was found to be more easily implemented in code, and it is efficient and easily applied to complex, structured molecules. This method has been successfully applied and benchmarked for a simple Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid and a structured molecule, …

The ABS content was calculated monthly based on the salt concentration, water amount, time, and area of entrance. The monthly measured ABS of the entire …

Using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry To Study The Interfacial Properties Of Cement-Based Materials, Shih-Wei Cho Jun 2012

Using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry To Study The Interfacial Properties Of Cement-Based Materials, Shih-Wei Cho

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Cement-based material is a typical porous composite material. Pore structures and interfacial properties of cementbased materials are influenced properties of ion transport behavior and durability. This study determines pore structure by employing mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), with mortar specimens manufactured with three different watercement (w/c) ratios and five volume proportions of fine aggregate to investigate interfacial properties. The experimental results show that total mercury intrusion decreases with an increase in sand volume proportion when comparing the same w/c ratio. The calculated mercury intrusion of interfacial transition zone increases with w/c and the volume proportion of fine aggregate.

A Quantitative Methodology For Vetting "Dark Network" Intelligence Sources For Social Network Analysis, James F. Morris

Theses and Dissertations

Social network analysis (SNA) is used by the DoD to describe and analyze social networks, leading to recommendations for operational decisions. However, social network models are constructed from various information sources of indeterminate reliability. Inclusion of unreliable information can lead to incorrect models resulting in flawed analysis and decisions. This research develops a methodology to assist the analyst by quantitatively identifying and categorizing information sources so that determinations on including or excluding provided data can be made. This research pursued three main thrusts. It consolidated binary similarity measures to determine social network information sources' concordance and developed a methodology to …

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser Jun 2012

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser

Theses and Dissertations

There has been longstanding government and industry interest in pressure-gain combustion for use in Brayton cycle based engines. Theoretically, pressure-gain combustion allows heat addition with reduced entropy loss. The pulsed detonation combustor (PDC) is a device that can provide such pressure-gain combustion and possibly replace typical steady deflagration combustors. The PDC is inherently unsteady, however, and comparisons with conventional steady deflagration combustors must be based upon time-integrated performance variables. In this study, the radial turbine of a Garrett automotive turbocharger was coupled directly to and driven, full admission, by a PDC in experiments fueled by hydrogen or ethylene. Data included …

Adaptive Routing Algorithm For Priority Flows In A Network, Timothy J. Carbino

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents the development of an Adaptive Routing Algorithm for Priority (ARAP) flows in a Network. Devices in today's battle space require information to function. Additional bandwidth requirements for such devices place an increased burden on the already congested networks in the battle space. Some devices require real time information (high priority) and other devices will not require real time information (low priority). Existing protocols treat the network like an opaque entity and have little knowledge of user requirements. User requirement information is available in tactical networks and we can take advantage of the known requirements to better optimize …

Intra-Procedural Path-Insensitive Grams (I-Grams) And Disassembly Based Features For Packer Tool Classification And Detection, Scott E. Gerics

Theses and Dissertations

The DoD relies on over seven million computing devices worldwide to accomplish a wide range of goals and missions. Malicious software, or malware, jeopardizes these goals and missions. However, determining whether an arbitrary software executable is malicious can be difficult. Obfuscation tools, called packers, are often used to hide the malicious intent of malware from anti-virus programs. Therefore detecting whether or not an arbitrary executable file is packed is a critical step in software security. This research uses machine learning methods to build a system, the Polymorphic and Non-Polymorphic Packer Detection (PNPD) system, that detects whether an executable is packed …

Detecting Hardware-Assisted Hypervisor Rootkits Within Nested Virtualized Environments, Daniel B. Morabito Jun 2012

Detecting Hardware-Assisted Hypervisor Rootkits Within Nested Virtualized Environments, Daniel B. Morabito

Theses and Dissertations

Virtual machine introspection (VMI) is intended to provide a secure and trusted platform from which forensic information can be gathered about the true behavior of malware within a guest. However, it is possible for malware to escape a guest into the host and for hypervisor rootkits, such as BluePill, to stealthily transition a native OS into a virtualized environment. This research examines the effectiveness of selected detection mechanisms against hardware-assisted virtualization rootkits (HAV-R) within a nested virtualized environment. It presents the design, implementation, analysis, and evaluation of a hypervisor rootkit detection system which exploits both processor and translation lookaside buffer-based …

A flash LADAR is investigated as a source of navigation information to support cross-hallway detection and relative localization. To accomplish this, a dynamic, flexible simulation was developed that simulated the LADAR and the noise of a LADAR system. Using simulated LADAR data, algorithms were developed that were shown to be effective at detecting cross hallways in simulated ideal environments and in simulated environments with noise. Relative position was determined in the same situations. A SwissRanger SR4000 flash LADAR was then used to collect real data and to verify algorithm performance in real environments. Hallway detection was shown to be possible …

Multi-Observation Continuous Density Hidden Markov Models For Anomaly Detection In Full Motion Video, Matthew P. Ross Jun 2012

Multi-Observation Continuous Density Hidden Markov Models For Anomaly Detection In Full Motion Video, Matthew P. Ross

Theses and Dissertations

An increase in sensors on the battlefield produces an abundance of collected data that overwhelms the processing capability of the DoD. Automated Visual Surveillance (AVS) seeks to use machines to better exploit increased sensor data, such as by highlighting anomalies. In this thesis, we apply AVS to overhead Full Motion Video (FMV). We seek to automate the classification of soldiers in a simulated combat scenario into their agent types. To this end, we use Multi-Dimensional Continuous Density Hidden Markov Models (MOCDHMMs), a form of HMM which models a training dataset more precisely than simple HMMs. MOCDHMMs are theoretically developed but …

Implementation Of Branch-Point-Tolerant Wavefront Reconstructor For Strong Turbulence Compensation, Michael J. Steinbock Jun 2012

Implementation Of Branch-Point-Tolerant Wavefront Reconstructor For Strong Turbulence Compensation, Michael J. Steinbock

Theses and Dissertations

Branch points arise in optical transmissions due to strong atmospheric turbulence, long propagation paths, or a combination of both. Unfortunately, these conditions are very often present in desired operational scenarios for laser weapon systems, optical communication, and covert imaging, which suffer greatly when traditional adaptive optics systems either cannot sense branch points or implement non-optimal methods for sensing and correcting branch points. Previous research by Pellizzari presented a thorough analysis of various novel branch point tolerant reconstructors in the absence of noise. In this research a realistic model of the Air Force Institute of Technology's adaptive optics system is developed …

The Challenges And Implications For Energy Education, Patrick A. Tebbe Jun 2012

The Challenges And Implications For Energy Education, Patrick A. Tebbe

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department Publications

In March 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan was hit by twin natural disasters of a 9.0 earthquake and a tsunami more than 10 meters high. The combination forced a shut down of the reactor and severed externally provided power. Backup generators and batteries, which at first functioned normally, were swamped and disabled by the tsunami waters. The subsequent loss of reactor core cooling led to rising temperatures that ultimately resulted in a partial melting of the fuel rods and several hydrogen explosions (produced by a steam-zirconium reaction). Eventually, the situation was brought under control, but not …

Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention Strategies For Pandemic Influenza Outbreaks, Dayna Lee Martinez Jun 2012

Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention Strategies For Pandemic Influenza Outbreaks, Dayna Lee Martinez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In case of a pandemic influenza outbreak, non-pharmaceutical interventions will likely be the only containment measure at the early stages of the pandemic when vaccines are not available. NPIs also oer an option for decreasing the probability of creating antiviral resistant viruses product of a mass prophylaxis campaign. In countries where there are not enough resources for vaccines and antivirals, NPIs may be the only mitigation actions available.

NPIs have been increasingly used in preparedness plans. We can see recommendations and guidelines regarding the use of NPIs in countries, health departments and universities. Also, researchers all around the world have …

Linear Precoding For Mimo Broadcast Channels With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Yongpeng Wu, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao Jun 2012

Linear Precoding For Mimo Broadcast Channels With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Yongpeng Wu, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the design of linear transmit precoder for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BC) with finite alphabet input signals. We first derive an explicit expression for the achievable rate region of the MIMO BC with discrete constellation inputs, which is generally applicable to cases involving arbitrary user number and arbitrary antenna number. We further present a weighted sum rate upper bound of the MIMO BC with identical transmit precoding matrices. the resulting bound exhibits a serious performance loss because of the non-uniquely decodable transmit signals for MIMO BC with finite alphabet inputs in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. This …

Multi-User Methods For Fea Pre-Processing, Prasad Weerakoon Jun 2012

Multi-User Methods For Fea Pre-Processing, Prasad Weerakoon

Theses and Dissertations

Collaboration in engineering product development leads to shorter product development times and better products. In product development, considerable time is spent preparing the CAD model or assembly for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In general Computer-Aided Applications (CAx) such as FEA deter collaboration because they allow only a single user to check out and make changes to the model at a given time. Though most of these software applications come with some collaborative tools, they are limited to simple tasks such as screen sharing and instant messaging. This thesis discusses methods to convert a current commercial FEA pre-processing program into a …

High Co2 Permeation Flux Enabled By Highly Interconnected Three-Dimensional Ionic Channels In Selective Co2 Separation Membranes, Lingling Zhang, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Siwei Wang, Kevin Huang, William H. Harris, Wilson K. S. Chiu

Faculty Publications

Abatement of CO2 emissions from existing fossil-fueled power plants is currently the sole near-term solution to stabilize CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Separation and capture of CO2from process streams of these power plants is the first step toward this effort. In this paper, we report a high flux membrane consisting of highly and efficiently interconnected three-dimensional ionic channels prepared from a combined “co-precipitation” and “sacrificial-template” synthesis. The membranes exhibit remarkable CO2 permeation characteristic, achieving a CO2 flux density two orders of magnitude higher than other similar systems reported in the literature. The experimental results …
