Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A novel cable-driven robotic gait training system has been tested to improve the locomotor function in individuals post stroke. Seven subjects with chronic stroke were recruited to participate in this 6 weeks robot-assisted treadmill training paradigm. A controlled assistance force was applied to the paretic leg at the ankle through a cable-driven robotic system. The force was applied from late stance to mid-swing during treadmill training. Body weight support was provided as necessary to prevent knee buckling or toe drag. Subjects were trained 3 times a week for 6 weeks. Overground gait speed, 6 minute walking distance, and balance were …

Effects Of Wrist Tendon Vibration On Targeted Upper-Arm Movements In Poststroke Hemiparesis, Megan O. Conrad, Robert A. Scheidt, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background. Impaired motor control of the upper extremity after stroke may be related to lost sensory, motor, and integrative functions of the brain. Artificial activation of sensory afferents might improve control of movement by adding excitatory drive to sensorimotor control structures. The authors evaluated the effect of wrist tendon vibration (TV) on paretic upper-arm stability during point-to-point planar movements. Methods. TV (70 Hz) was applied to the forearm wrist musculature of 10 hemiparetic stroke patients as they made center-out planar arm movements. End-point stability, muscle activity, and grip pressure were compared as patients stabilized at the target position …

Reorganization Of Finger Coordination Patterns During Adaptation To Rotation And Scaling Of A Newly Learned Sensorimotor Transformation, Xiaolin Liu, Kristine M. Mosier, Ferdinando A. Mussa-Ivaldi, Maura Casadio, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We examined how people organize redundant kinematic control variables (finger joint configurations) while learning to make goal-directed movements of a virtual object (a cursor) within a low-dimensional task space (a computer screen). Subjects participated in three experiments performed on separate days. Learning progressed rapidly on day 1, resulting in reduced target capture error and increased cursor trajectory linearity. On days 2 and 3, one group of subjects adapted to a rotation of the nominal map, imposed either stepwise or randomly over trials. Another group experienced a scaling distortion. We report two findings. First, adaptation rates and memory-dependent motor command updating …

A Quantitative And Standardized Robotic Method For The Evaluation Of Arm Proprioception After Stroke, Lucia Simo, Claude Ghez, Lior Botzer, Robert A. Scheidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Stroke often results in both motor and sensory deficits, which may interact in the manifested functional impairment. Proprioception is known to play important roles in the planning and control of limb posture and movement; however, the impact of proprioceptive deficits on motor function has been difficult to elucidate due in part to the qualitative nature of available clinical tests. We present a quantitative and standardized method for evaluating proprioception in tasks directly relevant to those used to assess motor function. Using a robotic manipulandum that exerted controlled displacements of the hand, stroke participants were evaluated, and compared with a control …

Visual And Proprioceptive Contributions To Compensatory And Pursuit Tracking Movements In Humans, Megan L. Heenan, Robert A. Scheidt, Scott A. Beardsley Jan 2011

Visual And Proprioceptive Contributions To Compensatory And Pursuit Tracking Movements In Humans, Megan L. Heenan, Robert A. Scheidt, Scott A. Beardsley

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

An ongoing debate in the field of motor control considers how the brain uses sensory information to guide the formation of motor commands to regulate movement accuracy. Recent research has shown that the brain may use visual and proprioceptive information differently for stabilization of limb posture (compensatory movements) and for controlling goal-directed limb trajectory (pursuit movements). Using a series of five experiments and linear systems identification techniques, we modeled and estimated the sensorimotor control parameters that characterize the human motor response to kinematic performance errors during continuous compensatory and pursuit tracking tasks. Our findings further support the idea that pursuit …

Energy Deposition In The Breast During Ct Scanning: Quantification And Implications For Dose Reduction, Franco Rupcich, Iacovos Kyprianou, Andreu Badal, Taly Gilat Schmidt Jan 2011

Energy Deposition In The Breast During Ct Scanning: Quantification And Implications For Dose Reduction, Franco Rupcich, Iacovos Kyprianou, Andreu Badal, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Studies suggest that dose to the breast leads to a higher lifetime attributable cancer incidence risk from a chest CT scan for women compared to men. Numerous methods have been proposed for reducing dose to the breast during CT scanning, including bismuth shielding, tube current modulation, partial-angular scanning, and reduced kVp. These methods differ in how they alter the spectrum and fluence across projection angle. This study used Monte Carlo CT simulations of a voxelized female phantom to investigate the energy (dose) deposition in the breast as a function of both photon energy and projection angle. The resulting dose deposition …

Effects Of Acute Rho Kinase Inhibition On Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Changes In Proximal And Distal Pulmonary Arterial Structure And Function, Rebecca R. Vanderpool, Ah Ram Kim, Robert C. Molthen, Naomi Chesler Jan 2011

Effects Of Acute Rho Kinase Inhibition On Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Changes In Proximal And Distal Pulmonary Arterial Structure And Function, Rebecca R. Vanderpool, Ah Ram Kim, Robert C. Molthen, Naomi Chesler

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is initially a disease of the small pulmonary arteries. Its severity is usually quantified by pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Acute Rho kinase inhibition has been found to reduce PVR toward control values in animal models, suggesting that persistent pulmonary vasoconstriction is the dominant mechanism for increased PVR. However, HPH may also cause proximal arterial changes, which are relevant to right ventricular (RV) afterload. RV afterload can be quantified by pulmonary vascular impedance, which is obtained via spectral analysis of pulsatile pressure-flow relationships. To determine the effects of HPH independent of persistent pulmonary vasoconstriction in proximal and …

Nano-Patterned High-Responsivity Gaas Metal-Semiconductor-Metal Photodetector, Ayman Karar, Chee Leong Tan, Kamal Alameh, Yong Tak Lee

Research outputs 2011

In this paper, we use the finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method to optimize the light absorption of an ultrafast nano-grating plasmonic GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector (MSM-PD) employing double metal nano-gratings. The geometry of the MSM-PD is theoretically investigated, leading to improved light absorption near the design wavelength of GaAs due to plasmon-assisted electric and magnetic field concentration through a subwavelength aperture. Simulation results show up to 8- and 21-times light absorption enhancement for the single and double nano-grating structure, respectively, in comparison to conventional MSM-PDs. Experimentally, more than 4 times enhancement in photocurrent is demonstrated for a single top nano-grating MSM-PD …

Structure-Property-Performance Ofnnanocomposite Cr-Si-N Films Synthesized By A Duplex Surface Treatment Technique, Daohui Lai, Jiang Xu, Zong-Han Xie, Paul R. Munroe

Research outputs 2011

Nanocomposite Cr–Si–N films were prepared on to Ti–6Al–4V substrates by a novel duplex surface treatment technique. Coatings consisting of a Cr3Si surface layer were deposited using a double cathode glow plasma and subsequent surface plasma nitriding. The surface topography, chemical composition, and microstructure of these treated alloys were analyzed by a variety of surface characterization techniques. The resulting Cr–Si–N films consisted of nanocrystallite CrN grains embedded in amorphous SiNx phase. Nanoindentation tests showed that with increasing nitrogen partial pressure the hardness of the Cr–Si–N films increased and the elastic modulus decreased. Wear experiments showed that the Cr–Si–N films produced at …

Load-Bearing Capacity Of The Footing Resting On A Reinforced Fly Ash Slope, K S. Gill, J N. Choudhary, J N. Jha, Sanjay K. Shukla

Research outputs 2011

In several parts of the world, disposal of waste materials such as fly ash is a great problem. Application of waste materials as structural fills in foundations is one of the best solutions to disposal problems, because wastes can be used in large volumes in such applications. There may be difficulty due to poor load-bearing capacity of fly ash, especially when footing rests on the top of the fly ash fill slope. Inclusion of polymeric reinforcements as horizontal sheets within the fill may be one of the most viable solutions to improving the load-bearing capacity of reinforced fly ash slope, …

Adaptive Noise Canceller For Magnetocardiography, Valentina Tiporlini, Ngiah Nguyen, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs 2011

This paper discusses the use of adaptive noise cancellation in magnetocardiography system within unshielded environment using three algorithms: Least-Mean Squared (LMS) algorithm; normalized LMS (nLMS) algorithm and Genetic Algorithms (GA). Simulation results show that for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, the GA algorithm outperforms the other algorithms, displaying an improvement in SNR of 51.155 dB and completely suppressing the noise sources at 60 Hz and at low frequencies. However, the convergence time of the GA algorithm is longer due to the high computational complexity.

Modelling Small-Scale Stand-Alone (Pv) Energy Systems With Reverse Osmosis Integration, Daniel Clarke, Yasir Al-Abdeli, Ganesh Kothapalli

Research outputs 2011

Australia has a vast land mass characterised by more than 35,000km of shore-line and an abundance of renewable sources (e.g., solar and wind en ergy). Despite the existence of much potential to utilise sustainable pathways of power generation, ther e remains a general reliance on electricity generated from larger plants which are mostly grid-connected but fossil-fuel operated. In Western Australia, only a fraction of its coastal areas and inland mass is serviced by the South West Interconnected (grid) System. For the majority of its regional commun ities, decentralised power generati on forms the prime source of power provision. This exacerbates …

Interpolation Of The Gnss Wet Troposphere Delay, Johnny Lo, Ahmed El-Mowafy Jan 2011

Interpolation Of The Gnss Wet Troposphere Delay, Johnny Lo, Ahmed El-Mowafy

Research outputs 2011

Troposphere delay is one of the main distance-dependent errors in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) observations. Precise estimation of the troposphere wet delay is necessary to aid ambiguity resolution and for positioning in network Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) and Precise Point Positioning. Wet tropospheric estimates can also serve as a source of atmospheric information to facilitate weather forecasting. Interpolation of the troposphere wet delay is thus required when its estimation is interrupted for short periods or when data are processed at higher intervals from that of available data. The objective of this research is to compare the performance of several interpolation …

Dynamic Modelling Of Zenith Wet Delay In Gnss Measurements, Ahmed El-Mowafy, Johnny Lo, Congwei Hu Jan 2011

Dynamic Modelling Of Zenith Wet Delay In Gnss Measurements, Ahmed El-Mowafy, Johnny Lo, Congwei Hu

Research outputs 2011

Proper modelling of the temporal correlations of the zenith wet delay (ZWD) is important in some of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) applications such as estimation of the Perceptible Water Vapour (PWV), and methods such as Precise Point Positioning (PPP). The random walk (RW) and the first-order Gauss- Markov (GM) autocorrelation model are commonly used for the dynamic modelling of ZWD in Kalman filtering of GNSS measurements. However, it was found that the GM model consistently underestimates the temporal correlations that exist among the ZWD estimates. Therefore, a new autocorrelation dynamic model is proposed in a form similar to …

Numerical Modelling Of Interrogation Systems For Optical Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors, Daniel P. Oswald, Steven J. Richardson, Graham Wild Jan 2011

Numerical Modelling Of Interrogation Systems For Optical Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors, Daniel P. Oswald, Steven J. Richardson, Graham Wild

Research outputs 2011

There are a number of interrogation methods that can be used in optical Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing system. For very high frequency signals interrogating the sensor signal from an FBG is limited to two intensiometric methods, edge filter detection and power detection. In edge filter detection, a broadband light source illuminates an FBG, the reflected spectrum is then passed through a spectral filter. In power detection, a narrowband light source with a wavelength corresponding to the 3dB point of the FBG is filtered by the FBG itself. Both methods convert the spectral shift of the FBG into intensity signals. …

Optical Fibre Communications And Sensing System Experiments For Undergraduate Photonics Laboratories, Graham Wild, Geoffrey Swan

Research outputs 2011

Experiments in photonics tend to be reserved for postgraduate laboratories, where suitable equipment and resources are available. Simple optical fibre experiments may be included in some undergraduate programs, possibly utilising polymer optical fibres with LEDs and phototransistors, or with the use of bulk optical components and glass optical fibre elements. However, real optical fibre communication systems and optical fibre sensing systems utilise more complex devices, such as optical fibre Bragg gratings. With the availability of optical components in the 850nm wavelength range, a variety of practical systems can be realised using industry standard components. We show how to mitigate a …

Stabilisation Of Linear-Cavity Fibre Laser Using A Saturable Absorber, David Michel, Feng Xiao, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs 2011

We investigate the optimisation of the length of an un-pumped erbium doped fibre (EDF) in order to suppress amplifier noise in a linear-cavity fibre laser structure. The experimental results demonstrate the existence of an optimum length of the un-pumped EDF which eliminates noise due to high optical pumping powers, thus leading to a stable laser output.
