Experimental Method Calibration (Mecr): A New Relative Method For Heat Flux Sensor Calibration, Craig D. Adams, A Jean, M Medina, F Miranville Jan 2011

Experimental Method Calibration (Mecr): A New Relative Method For Heat Flux Sensor Calibration, Craig D. Adams, A Jean, M Medina, F Miranville

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Heat flux sensor calibration is often expensive, but it is also a fundamental step to obtain valid results. According to the needs, several calibration procedures could be considered. If experimental interpretations focus on heat flux values comparison rather than true values, a relative calibration with high accuracy can be performed. This paper focuses on a new relative calibration-type method of heat flux sensors (HFSs). In general, the HFSs were originally (even recently) factory and in-house-calibrated, but this method was used to calibrate them to an exact common reading to help in performing accurate experiments and eliminating errors that could result …

Characterizing Liquefaction Potential Of Pleistocene Soil Deposits In The Charleston Area, South Carolina, Tahereh Heidari

All Dissertations

Liquefaction potential of major Pleistocene deposits in the Greater Charleston area, South Carolina is investigated in this dissertation. The data considered to characterize liquefaction potential include field performance information the 1886 Charleston earthquake and the results of many seismic cone penetration tests with pore water measurements (SCPTu). The investigation begins with the Mount Pleasant area, and then expands to the entire Greater Charleston area.
A liquefaction potential map of Mount Pleasant is created through reviewing available first-hand accounts of ground behavior during the 1886 earthquake, analyzing cone penetration test and shear wave velocity data, and correlating the results with geology. …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Antioxidant Delivery Systems, Paritosh P. Wattamwar Jan 2011

Synthesis And Characterization Of Polymeric Antioxidant Delivery Systems, Paritosh P. Wattamwar

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Even though the role of oxidative stress in a variety of disease states is known, strategies to alleviate this oxidative stress by antioxidants have not been able to achieve clinical success. Particularly, treatment of oxidative stress by small molecule antioxidants has not received due attention because of the challenges associated with its delivery. Antioxidant polymers, where small molecule antioxidants are incorporated into the polymer backbone, are an emerging class of materials that can address some of these challenges.

In this work, biodegradable polymers incorporating phenolic antioxidants in the polymer backbone were synthesized. Antioxidant polymers were then characterized for their in …

Stability Of Affinity Based Layer-By-Layer Polymeric Self-Assemblies For Oral Wound Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam Jan 2011

Stability Of Affinity Based Layer-By-Layer Polymeric Self-Assemblies For Oral Wound Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Oral mucositis is a painful and debilitating chronic inflammatory condition that can result from chemo and/or radiotherapy. While current treatment strategies which provide temporary relief exist, there is still an unmet clinical need for a robust long active barrier strategy which can simultaneously provide protection and release drug to enhance the wound healing response. It is proposed that an affinity based layer-by-layer self-assembled barrier administered as a series of mouth rinses can allow for wound specific drug delivery, providing an effective regenerative therapy.

In this work, biotinylated poly(acrylic acid) is used to develop LBL assemblies based upon biotin-streptavidin affinity interactions. …

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer Jan 2011

Dynamic Relaxation Properties Of Aromatic Polyimides And Polymer Nanocomposites, Anthony C. Comer

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

The dynamic relaxation characteristics of Matrimid® (BTDA-DAPI) polyimide and several functionalized aromatic polyimides have been investigated using dynamic mechanical and dielectric methods. The functionalized polyimides were thermally rearranged to generate polybenzoxazole membranes with controlled free volume characteristics. All polyimides have application in membrane separations and exhibit three motional processes with increasing temperature: two sub-glass relaxations (ƴ and β transitions), and the glass-rubber (α) transition. For Matrimid, the low-temperature ƴ transition is purely non-cooperative, while the β sub-glass transition shows a more cooperative character as assessed via the Starkweather method. For the thermally rearranged polyimides, the ƴ transition is a …

Image Editing Style-Based Authorship Authentication, Chengcui Zhang, Wei-Bang Chen, Liping Zhou Jan 2011

Image Editing Style-Based Authorship Authentication, Chengcui Zhang, Wei-Bang Chen, Liping Zhou

College of Arts & Sciences Professional Work

This paper aims to provide an authorship identification framework that can provide added clues to online auction user profiling systems, the primary purpose of which is early detection and prevention of fraudulent behaviors such as account taken-over. This framework authenticates the authorship of product listing pictures in terms of their image editing styles, and it achieves this goal in three steps: (1) editing style distinction: using a Hough transform based edge clustering algorithm to differentiate between image editing styles created by the same seller, (2) editing style summarization: analyzing and encoding each distinctive image editing style into a template based …

Relation Liftings On Preorders And Posets, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jiří Velebil Jan 2011

Relation Liftings On Preorders And Posets, Marta Bílková, Alexander Kurz, Daniela Petrişan, Jiří Velebil

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

The category Rel(Set) of sets and relations can be described as a category of spans and as the Kleisli category for the powerset monad. A set-functor can be lifted to a functor on Rel(Set) iff it preserves weak pullbacks. We show that these results extend to the enriched setting, if we replace sets by posets or preorders. Preservation of weak pullbacks becomes preservation of exact lax squares. As an application we present Moss’s coalgebraic over posets.

Evaluation Of The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Cad-Cam Generated Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Laminate Veneers, Tariq F. Alghazzawi Jan 2011

Evaluation Of The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Cad-Cam Generated Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Laminate Veneers, Tariq F. Alghazzawi

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this investigation was to study three aspects which have been shown to limit clinical applications of yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) for dental restorations. Mechanical property and structural changes due to low-temperature degradation (LTD) of Y-TZP led to increased surface roughness and monoclinic phase fractions, with a concomitant decrease in hardness and modulus. Yttria content and flexural strength were unchanged and phase transformation proceeded from the surface into the bulk of the material. The optical properties of Y-TZP, IPS e.max® CAD (IEC), and feldspathic por-celain (FP) laminate veneers showed that the underlying color of try-in pastes (TP) af-fected the …

Fabrication Of Biodegradable Fibers Using Hdpe/Starch Blends. Morphological, Mechanical And Processing, Fayaz J. Ali Jan 2011

Fabrication Of Biodegradable Fibers Using Hdpe/Starch Blends. Morphological, Mechanical And Processing, Fayaz J. Ali

All ETDs from UAB

Products developed from polymeric materials have found a myriad of applications that make life better and more convenient. In many cases, however, plastics end up in landfills after their useful lifetime. The inability of most synthetic plastics to degrade in the landfill presents a challenge to continue to expand their applications in order to minimize their environmental impact. Incorporating natural fibers into synthetic polymers has been investigated recently; however, most of the natural fibers do not have the mechanical properties of their inorganic counterparts. Thus, there is a need for high strength fibers that are degradable. The goal of this …

Identifying Candidate Roads For Managed Lanes In Alabama, Sara M. Alnazer

All ETDs from UAB

Previous research and deployment efforts showcase the potential benefits of managed lane strategies toward increasing the utilization and efficiency of transportation facilities, and thus reducing congestion and related impacts. However, criteria for determining the suitability of a specific highway corridor for deployment of managed lane strategies are less well established. This thesis reports on a study that incorporates best practices from across the country to develop a standard screening and evaluation methodology leading to the identification of promising corridors for managed lanes deployment. Best-suited managed lane strategies for the selected corridors are also identified. The methodology is then used to …

Biometic Self-Assembled Nanomatrix For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Joel Matthew Anderson Jan 2011

Biometic Self-Assembled Nanomatrix For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Joel Matthew Anderson

All ETDs from UAB

Formation of the native bone extracellular matrix (ECM) provides an attractive template for bone tissue engineering. At the cellular level, structural support and biological complexity of bone ECM are provided within a composite microenvironment that consists of an organic fibrous network reinforced by inorganic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanostructured crystals. To synthetically recreate this biphasic assembly, a bone ECM analogous scaffold comprised of self-assembling peptide amphiphile (PA) nanofibers and interspersed HA nanoparticles was investigated. The PAs have been endowed with biomolecular ligand signaling using synthetically inscribed peptide sequences (i.e. RGDS, DGEA) derived from the native bone ECM and integrated with HA nanoparticles …

Nonlinear Modeling And Simulation Of Radial Forging Process, Jian Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

"Radial forging is an important manufacturing process to produce large cannon barrels. It is used to improve the material properties and reduce the porosity of the billet. The objective of this study is to develop finite element models to investigate the behavior of the workpiece and predict the elimination of void defects in the radial forging process. A nonlinear coupled finite element model has been developed to study the behavior of a large-diameter tube subjected to mechanical and thermal loadings in hot radial forging. The model is formulated in a three-dimensional frame, accounting for both axial and circumferential effects. A …

Strength Adjustable Preformed Particle Gels For Conformance Control, Jia Zhou Jan 2011

Strength Adjustable Preformed Particle Gels For Conformance Control, Jia Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

"Reservoir heterogeneity and early water breakthrough (also known as fingering) represent two of the greatest challenges to recover crude oil efficiently. Gel treatments have been implemented as a cost-effective method to plug high permeability zones and thus improve sweep efficiency in reservoirs. However, when extensive cross-flows exist between formation layers, gel treatments become less efficient. Polymer was used in polymer flooding to increase the viscosity of the injected fluids and to correct the fingering problem. However, such treatment may be uneconomical since dramatic viscosity loss (80-90%) is caused by shearing degradation during the injection process near the wellbore.

This research …

Identified charged pion, kaon, and proton spectra are used to explore the system size dependence of bulk freeze-out properties in Cu+Cu collisions at √sNN=200 and 62.4 GeV. The data are studied with hydrodynamically motivated blast-wave and statistical model frameworks in order to characterize the freeze-out properties of the system. The dependence of freeze-out parameters on beam energy and collision centrality is discussed. Using the existing results from Au + Au and pp collisions, the dependence of freeze-out parameters on the system size is also explored. This multidimensional systematic study furthers our understanding of the QCD phase diagram revealing the importance …

Robust Adaptive Filtering Algorithms For System Identification And Array Signal Processing In Non-Gaussian Environment, Tiange Shao Jan 2011

Robust Adaptive Filtering Algorithms For System Identification And Array Signal Processing In Non-Gaussian Environment, Tiange Shao

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation proposes four new algorithms based on fractionally lower order statistics for adaptive filtering in a non-Gaussian interference environment. One is the affine projection sign algorithm (APSA) based on L₁ norm minimization, which combines the ability of decorrelating colored input and suppressing divergence when an outlier occurs. The second one is the variable-step-size normalized sign algorithm (VSS-NSA), which adjusts its step size automatically by matching the L₁ norm of the a posteriori error to that of noise. The third one adopts the same variable-step-size scheme but extends L₁ minimization to Lp minimization and the variable step-size normalized fractionally lower-order …

Stress Measurement And Development Of Zirconium Diboride-Silicon Carbide Ceramics, Jeremy Lee Watts Jan 2011

Stress Measurement And Development Of Zirconium Diboride-Silicon Carbide Ceramics, Jeremy Lee Watts

Doctoral Dissertations

"Research presented in this dissertation focused on the production of ZrB₂-SiC composites and their characterization; in particular their mechanical properties and thermally generated residual stresses. Thermally generated stresses were measured using Raman spectroscopy as well as both neutron and x-ray diffraction. For 70 vol% ZrB₂ - 30 vol% SiC composites neutron diffraction revealed that the SiC phase was under ~880 MPa compressive stress and the ZrB₂ phase was under ~450 MPa tension at room temperature. It was also discovered that stresses began to accumulate at ~1400 ⁰C upon cooling from the processing temperature (1900 ⁰C -2000 ⁰C). Raman spectroscopy and …

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang Jan 2011

Hilbert Transform Applications In Signal Analysis And Non-Parametric Identification Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Zuocai Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Hilbert Huang Transform faces several challenges in dealing with closely-spaced frequency components, short-time and weak disturbances, and interrelationships between two time-varying modes of nonlinear vibration due to its mixed mode problem associated with empirical mode decomposition (EMD). To address these challenges, analytical mode decomposition (AMD) based on Hilbert Transform is proposed and developed for an adaptive data analysis of both stationary and non-stationary responses. With a suite of predetermined bisecting frequencies, AMD can analytically extract the individual components of a structural response between any two bisecting frequencies and function like an adaptive bandpass filter that can deal with frequency-modulated responses …

Two-Point Bend Studies Of Glass Fibers, Zhongzhi Tang Jan 2011

Two-Point Bend Studies Of Glass Fibers, Zhongzhi Tang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The principal objective of this research is to advance our understanding of how glass breaks. Glass, a material well known for its brittleness, has been used widely but within a frustrating limit of its strength. Generally, strength is not considered as an intrinsic property of glass, due to the difficulty of avoiding the presence of flaws on the sample surface. The fiber drawing system and two-point bending (TPB) equipment developed at Missouri S&T allow the fabrication of pristine glass fibers and failure strain measurements while minimizing the effects of strength limiting critical flaws. Several conditions affect the failure behavior of …

"Alloying is required for the production of all steel products from small castings to large beams. Addition of large quantities of bulk alloys can result in alloy segregation and inconsistent alloy recovery. The objective of this research was to better understand alloy dissolution in liquid steel especially as it relates to Missouri S&Ts' patented continuous steelmaking process. A 45-kilogram capacity ladle with a single porous plug was used to evaluate the effect of four experimental factors on alloy dissolution: alloy species, alloy size or form, argon flow rate, and furnace tap temperature. Four alloys were tested experimentally including Class I …

Diesel Particulate Matter Dispersion Analysis In Underground Metal/Nonmetal Mines Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Yi Zheng Jan 2011

Diesel Particulate Matter Dispersion Analysis In Underground Metal/Nonmetal Mines Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Yi Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

"Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) is a natural by-product from operating diesel engines. Since diesel power is a major source of energy for mining operations today, the adverse health effects of DPM are of a great concern. To thoroughly resolve DPM problems, it is critical that DPM propagation characteristics be understood to arrive at a sensible and practical method for addressing DPM-related issues. To achieve this, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is used to simulate DPM dispersion and to predict its concentration distribution. Industrial field studies were reconstructed to evaluate the possibility of different CFD models. Experiments were also carried …

Effect Of Hydrophobicity And Surface Roughness On Two-Phase Flow In Rectangular Microchannels, Gautham C. Unni Jan 2011

Effect Of Hydrophobicity And Surface Roughness On Two-Phase Flow In Rectangular Microchannels, Gautham C. Unni

Doctoral Dissertations

"Two-phase flows in microchannels have received significant attention recently, and have become the cornerstone of numerous microfluidic devices. Microscale devices used for bioengineering applications, oil recovery, and chemical and catalytic microreactor applications involve the transport of bubbles in confined fluidic networks in channels of micrometer length scale. These types of two-phase flows result in pressure variations, leading to an overall increase in pressure drop. Among various flow parameters, pressure drop is extensively used in design of microfluidic devices. There are several parameters that affect the pressure drop across two-phase flow in microchannels. In the present study, the goal is to …

Postcyclic Behavior Of Low-Plasticity Silt, Shuying Wang Jan 2011

Postcyclic Behavior Of Low-Plasticity Silt, Shuying Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Liquefaction of low-plasticity silt has been reported during earthquakes in the recent past. Excess pore pressure builds up due to the dynamic loading and then dissipates. The postcyclic behavior of low-plasticity silt was investigated in this research for materials obtained from the Mississippi River Valley. The experimental program involved specimen preparation using a slurry consolidation approach. A special technique was developed for specimen movement, reducing the testing program time by half. Both static and cyclic triaxial tests were conducted to confirm the ability to prepare replica specimens. In order to characterize the monotonic behavior, triaxial tests were conducted to determine …

Assessing System Architectures: The Canonical Decomposition Fuzzy Comparative Methodology, Jason Paul Dauby Jan 2011

Assessing System Architectures: The Canonical Decomposition Fuzzy Comparative Methodology, Jason Paul Dauby

Doctoral Dissertations

"The impacts of decisions made during the selection of the system architecture propagate throughout the entire system lifecycle. The challenge for system architects is to perform a realistic assessment of an inherently ambiguous system concept. Subject matter expert interpretations, intuition, and heuristics are performed quickly and guide system development in the right overall direction, but these methods are subjective and unrepeatable. Traditional analytical assessments dismiss complexity in a system by assuming severability between system components and are intolerant of ambiguity. To be defensible, a suitable methodology must be repeatable, analytically rigorous, and yet tolerant of ambiguity. The hypothesis for this …

Additivity Of Strengthening Mechanisms In Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, Nilesh Kumar Jan 2011

Additivity Of Strengthening Mechanisms In Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, Nilesh Kumar

Doctoral Dissertations

"Friction stir processing (FSP) has been used in the present work to obtain ultrafine grained (UFG) microstructure in a twin-roll cast (TRC) Al-Mg-Sc alloy. An attempt has been made to establish a correlation between processing, microstructure, and properties (mechanical) in UFG regime for this alloy system.

The effect of initial microstructural conditions and processing parameters (tool rotation rate) were shown to have a profound impact on the development of UFG microstructure. FSP led to a microstructure consisting of grains with an average grain size as small as 390 nm, having high angle grain boundaries and a completely random texture. The …
