Evidence Supporting Measure Of Similarity For Reducing The Complexity In Information Fusion, Xinde Li, Jean Dezert, Florentin Smarandache, Xinhan Huang

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper proposes a new solution for reducing the number of sources of evidence to be combined in order to diminish the complexity of the fusion process required in some applications where the real-time constraint and strong computing resource limitation are of prime importance. The basic idea consists in selecting, among the whole set of sources of evidence, only the biggest subset of sources which are not too contradicting based on a criterion of Evidence Supporting Measure of Similarity (ESMS) in order to process solely the coherent information received. The ESMS criterion serves actually as a generic tool for outlier …

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Purpose: In this paper, the impact of Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) systems on traffic performance is examined using microscopic agent-based simulation. Using a developed traffic simulation model of a freeway with an on-ramp - created to induce perturbations and to trigger stop-and-go traffic, the CACC system’s effect on the traffic performance is studied. The previously proposed traffic simulation model is extended and validated. By embedding CACC vehicles in different penetration levels, the results show significance and indicate the potential of CACC systems to improve traffic characteristics and therefore can be used to reduce traffic congestion. The study shows that …

Selection Of Source And Use Of Traffic Information In Emergency Situations, R. Michael Robinson, Asad Khattak Jan 2011

Selection Of Source And Use Of Traffic Information In Emergency Situations, R. Michael Robinson, Asad Khattak

VMASC Publications

The access and the use of advanced traveler information systems (ATISs) by drivers during normal commuting have been extensively assessed and analyzed. Emergency managers and transportation officials have extended the results of studies of ATIS use under routine conditions to emergency scenarios under the assumption that drivers' responses to information under emergency conditions mimic those seen under normal driving conditions. A recent survey of potential hurricane evacuees suggests the need to revisit this assumption. Results indicate that although commercial radio reports and variable message signs continue to be the sources of traffic information cited the most frequently, other information sources …

Wirelessly Sensing Resonate Frequency Of Passive Resonators With Different Q Values, Mathew Walter Lukacs Jan 2011

Wirelessly Sensing Resonate Frequency Of Passive Resonators With Different Q Values, Mathew Walter Lukacs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous techniques exist for measuring temperature using passive devices such as SAW filters. However, SAW filters have a significant limitation regarding high temperature environments exceeding 1000⁰C [1]. There are several applications for a high temperature sensor in this range, most notably heat flux or temperature in turbine engines. For these environments, an alternative to SAW filters is to use a passive resonator. The resonate frequency will vary depending on the environment temperature. Understanding how the frequency changes with temperature will allow us to determine the environmental temperature. In order for this approach to work, it is necessary to induce resonance …

Goodput Maximization In Cooperative Networks With Arq, Qing Chen, M. Cenk Gursoy Jan 2011

Goodput Maximization In Cooperative Networks With Arq, Qing Chen, M. Cenk Gursoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, the average successful throughput, i.e., goodput, of a coded 3-node cooperative network is studied in a Rayleigh fading environment. It is assumed that a simple automatic repeat request (ARQ) technique is employed in the network so that erroneously received packets are retransmitted until successful delivery. The relay is assumed to operate in either amplify-and-forward (AF) or decode-and-forward (DF) mode. Under these assumptions, retransmission mechanisms and protocols are described, and the average time required to send information successfully is determined. Subsequently, the goodput for both AF and DF relaying is formulated. The tradeoffs and interactions between the …

Synthesis And Surface Modification Of Cdse And Cds Quantum Dots Exhibiting High Quantum Yield, Jeweliet Yost

Master’s Theses

The thesis investigates the effect of surface treatment with various reducing and oxidizing agents on the quantum yield (QY) of CdSe and CdS quantum dots (QDs). The QDs, as synthesized by the organometallic method, contained defect sites on their surface that trapped photons and prevented their radiative recombination, therefore resulting in adecreased QY. To passivate these defect sites and enhance the QY, the QDs were treated with various reducing and oxidizing agents, including: sodium borohydride (NaBH4), calcium hydride (CaH2), hydrazine (N2H4), benzoyl peroxide (C14H10O4), and tert-butylhydroperoxide (C4H10O2). It was hypothesized that the reducing/oxidizing agents reduced the ligands on the QD …

Study Of Probabilistic Approach For Structural Health Assessment Of Aerospace Structures, Jose Antonio Garcia Jan 2011

Study Of Probabilistic Approach For Structural Health Assessment Of Aerospace Structures, Jose Antonio Garcia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Current practical approaches used in structural health assessment programs of aerospace structures involve performing a fracture mechanics analysis to verify the safe life of structural components. The analysis typically makes several conservative assumptions implemented by NASA fracture control standard practices for critical structural components. This well-established paradigm for fracture control follows a deterministic approach and, in some cases, the calculations may produce overly conservative remaining life estimates.

This thesis describes the results of a study to approach the health assessment challenge of several critical components using probabilistic methods. The probabilistic analysis takes the current deterministic model and identifies variables that …

A Combined X-Fem And Level Set Approach For Modeling Composite Material's Micro Structure, Himanshu Kumar Jan 2011

A Combined X-Fem And Level Set Approach For Modeling Composite Material's Micro Structure, Himanshu Kumar

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Composite materials are usually made of fibers and binding matrix. It's always a challenge to model composite materials' microstructure through the traditional finite element method because construction of an approximation space which is discontinuous across a given line or surface will place strict restrictions on the FE mesh. The interfacing of fibers in composites' microstructure through the standard finite element method is irksome and tedious because the presence of fiber presents a discontinuity in the binding material. In this present work, the composite's microstructure is modeled through the combined approach of Level Set and Extended Finite Element Method. The fiber …
