Fabrication Of Mwcnt Based Gas Sensor Using Site-Selective Growth Of Nanotubes On Gold Patterned Silicon Oxide Substrate, Srikanth Durgamahanty

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Growth confinement techniques for multi walled carbon nanotubes on Au/SiO2 surfaces was studied and incorporated into a gas sensor design. A device framework was conceived and a sensor was built to achieve this structure. The fabrication results were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy which confirmed the achievement of highly site-selective growth of carbon nanotubes, exclusively between the interdigitated electrodes. The sensor was then evaluated for its capacitance and conductance response when exposed to NO2 gas. Variation in sensitivities with frequency and flow rate were analyzed. A mathematical model was derived for such a device structure and the predictions …

Effect Of A Silicon Tip On Absorption Cross Section, Field Enhancement, And Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Different Sized Gold Nanoparticles Under Evanescent Wave Illumination, Gazi Mostafa Huda Jan 2011

Effect Of A Silicon Tip On Absorption Cross Section, Field Enhancement, And Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Different Sized Gold Nanoparticles Under Evanescent Wave Illumination, Gazi Mostafa Huda

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We have numerically investigated the influence of a nanoscale silicon tip in proximity to an illuminated gold nanoparticle. We describe how the position of the high-permittivity tip and the size of a nanoparticle impact the absorption, peak electric field and surface plasmon resonance wavelength under different illumination conditions. We detail the finite element method (FEM) approach we have used for this, whereby we specify a volume excitation field analytically and calculate the difference between this source field and the total field (i.e., scattered-field formulation). We show that a nanoscale tip can locally enhance the absorption of the particle as well …

Rotate And Hold And Scan (Rahas): Structured Light Illumination For Use In Remote Areas, Eli Ross Crane Jan 2011

Rotate And Hold And Scan (Rahas): Structured Light Illumination For Use In Remote Areas, Eli Ross Crane

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

As a critical step after the discovery of material culture in the field, archaeologists have a need to document these findings with a slew of different physical measurements and photographs from varying perspectives. 3-D imaging is becoming increasingly popular as the primary documenting method to replace the plethora of tests and measurements, but for remote areas 3-D becomes more cumbersome due to physical and environmental constraints. The difficulty of using a 3-D imaging system in such environments is drastically lessened while using the RAHAS technique, since it acquires scans untethered to a computer. The goal of this thesis is to …

Viability Of A Controllable Chaotic Micromixer Through The Use Of Titanium-Nickel Shape Memory Alloy, David Ryan Lilly Jan 2011

Viability Of A Controllable Chaotic Micromixer Through The Use Of Titanium-Nickel Shape Memory Alloy, David Ryan Lilly

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Microfluidic devices have found applications in a number of areas, such as medical analysis, chemical synthesis, biological study, and drug delivery. Because of the small channel dimensions used in these systems, most microchannels exhibit laminar flow due to their low Reynold’s number, making mixing of fluids very challenging. Mixing at this size scale is diffusion-limited, so inducing chaotic flow patterns can increase the interface surface area between two fluids, thereby decreasing overall mixing time.

One method to create a chaotic flow within the channel is through the introduction of internal protrusions into the channel. In such an application protrusions that …

Calibration Of Alumina-Epoxy Nanocomposites Using Piezospectroscopy For The Development Of Stress-Sensing Adhesives, Amanda L. Stevenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A non-invasive method to quantify the stress distribution in polymer-based materials is presented through the piezospectroscopic calibration of alumina-epoxy nanocomposites. Three different alumina volume fraction nanocomposites were created and loaded under uniaxial compression in order to determine the relationship between applied stress and the frequency shift of the R-lines produced by alumina under excitation. Quantitative values for six piezospectroscopic coefficients were obtained which represent the stress-sensing property of the nanocomposites. The results were applied to an alumina-filled adhesive in a single lap shear configuration demonstrating the capability of the technique to monitor R-line peak positions with high spatial resolution and …

Measurements In Air-Water Bubbly Flow Through A Vertical Narrow High-Aspect Ratio Channel, Benjamin R. Patrick Jan 2011

Measurements In Air-Water Bubbly Flow Through A Vertical Narrow High-Aspect Ratio Channel, Benjamin R. Patrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two-Phase bubbly flows are encountered in a wide range of industrial applications, particularly where phase changes occur as seen in high performance heat exchangers and boiling reactors for power generation. These flows have been extensively studied in channels with circular geometries using air-water flows, though little data exists for flows through narrow rectangular channels. Measurements in thin geometries are particularly challenging since large bubbles bridge the gap, and it is difficult to compare point measurements with photographic techniques. The objective of this study is to explore the abilities of hot-film anemometry and high speed photography for taking measurements in a …

Design And Operation Of Stationary Distributed Battery Micro-Storage Systems, Ala R. Al-Haj Hussein Jan 2011

Design And Operation Of Stationary Distributed Battery Micro-Storage Systems, Ala R. Al-Haj Hussein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to some technical and environmental constraints, expanding the current electric power generation and transmission system is being challenged by even increasing the deployment of distributed renewable generation and storage systems. Energy storage can be used to store energy from utility during low-demand (off-peak) hours and deliver this energy back to the utility during high-demand (on-peak) hours. Furthermore, energy storage can be used with renewable sources to overcome some of their limitations such as their strong dependence on the weather conditions, which cannot be perfectly predicted, and their unmatched or out-of-synchronization generation peaks with the demand peaks. Generally, energy storage …

Feature Pruning For Action Recognition In Complex Environment, Adarsh Nagaraja Jan 2011

Feature Pruning For Action Recognition In Complex Environment, Adarsh Nagaraja

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A significant number of action recognition research efforts use spatio-temporal interest point detectors for feature extraction. Although the extracted features provide useful information for recognizing actions, a significant number of them contain irrelevant motion and background clutter. In many cases, the extracted features are included as is in the classification pipeline, and sophisticated noise removal techniques are subsequently used to alleviate their effect on classification. We introduce a new action database, created from the Weizmann database, that reveals a significant weakness in systems based on popular cuboid descriptors. Experiments show that introducing complex backgrounds, stationary or dynamic, into the video …

Techniques For Boosting The Performance In Content-Based Image Retrieval Systems, Ning Yu Jan 2011

Techniques For Boosting The Performance In Content-Based Image Retrieval Systems, Ning Yu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Content-Based Image Retrieval has been an active research area for decades. In a CBIR system, one or more images are used as query to search for similar images. The similarity is measured on the low level features, such as color, shape, edge, texture. First, each image is processed and visual features are extract. Therefore each image becomes a point in the feature space. Then, if two images are close to each other in the feature space, they are considered similar. That is, the k nearest neighbors are considered the most similar images to the query image. In this K-Nearest Neighbor …

Purge And Secondary Flow Interaction Control By Means Of Platform Circumferential Contouring, Melissa Harris Jan 2011

Purge And Secondary Flow Interaction Control By Means Of Platform Circumferential Contouring, Melissa Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study presents an attempt to reduce the losses produced by the purge flow in a turbine stage by incorporating circumferential platform contouring. Two contours are proposed and compared against a baseline at different levels of swirl. The computational simulations were performed using a RANS three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics code with the Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. The results of steady simulations demonstrate that for the first contour, when the flow is swirled to 50% of the rim speed, the purge flow exits the cavity with less cross flow. This in turn reduces the strength of the passage vortex. However, …

This dissertation will specifically address the issue of improving the quality of satellite scatterometer retrieved ocean surface vector winds (OVW), especially in the presence of strong rain associated with tropical cyclones. A novel active/passive OVW retrieval algorithm is developed that corrects Ku-band scatterometer measurements for rain effects and then uses them to retrieve accurate OVW. The rain correction procedure makes use of independent information available from collocated multi-frequency passive microwave observations provided by a companion sensor and also from simultaneous C-band scatterometer measurements. The synergy of these active and passive measurements enables improved correction for rain effects, which enhances the …

Effective Task Transfer Through Indirect Encoding, Phillip Verbancsics Jan 2011

Effective Task Transfer Through Indirect Encoding, Phillip Verbancsics

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An important goal for machine learning is to transfer knowledge between tasks. For example, learning to play RoboCup Keepaway should contribute to learning the full game of RoboCup soccer. Often approaches to task transfer focus on transforming the original representation to fit the new task. Such representational transformations are necessary because the target task often requires new state information that was not included in the original representation. In RoboCup Keepaway, changing from the 3 vs. 2 variant of the task to 4 vs. 3 adds state information for each of the new players. In contrast, this dissertation explores the idea …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we document the progress in the estimation and control design of a smart assistive robot arm that can provide assistance during activities of daily living to the elderly and/or users with disabilities. Interaction with the environment is made challenging by the kinematic uncertainty in the robot, imperfect sensor calibration, limited view of angle as well as the fact that most activities of daily living are generally required to be performed in unstructured environments. For monocular visual systems, range (or depth) information is always crucial for target modeling and system control design. In the first part of my …

Resource Banking An Energy-Efficient, Run-Time Adaptive Processor Design Technique, Jacob Staples Jan 2011

Resource Banking An Energy-Efficient, Run-Time Adaptive Processor Design Technique, Jacob Staples

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From the earliest and simplest scalar computation engines to modern superscalar out-oforder processors, the evolution of computational machinery during the past century has largely been driven by a single goal: performance. In today’s world of cheap, billion-plus transistor count processors and with an exploding market in mobile computing, a design landscape has emerged where energy efficiency, arguably more than any other single metric, determines the viability of a processor for a given application. The historical emphasis on performance has left modern processors bloated and over provisioned for everyday tasks in the hope that during computationally intensive periods some performance improvement …

Imaging Long-Range Orientational Order In Monolayers Of Amphiphilic Molecules With Scanning Probe Force Microscope And Liquid Crystal Optical Amplification, Wenlang Liang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Monolayers of amphiphilic molecules at interface provide a unique system for understanding the thermodynamic and rheological properties of quasi two-dimensional systems. They are also an excellent model accessible for studying cell membranes. The feature of longrange organization of molecular tilt azimuth in monolayers at the air/water interface is one of the most interesting findings over the past two decades, which leads to the formation rich and defined textures. By observing the changes in these textures, the transitions between tilted monolayer phases can be detected. We study the boojum and stripe textures formed in the liquid-condensed phase of pentadecanoic acid (PDA) …
