Correlation Between Alternans Of Early And Late Phases Of Ventricular Action Potential, Sonam Chourasia Jan 2011

Correlation Between Alternans Of Early And Late Phases Of Ventricular Action Potential, Sonam Chourasia

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Several studies suggest that action potential duration (APD) alternans play an important role in initiation of arrhythmias, while less is known about the alternans of early phases of action potential (AP) and phase relation between the two. Transmembrane potentials recorded from swine and canine ventricles were analyzed to determine the correlation and phase relation between alternans of early and late phases of an AP. In both species, for activation intervals ≤ 400 ms, action potential amplitude (APA) alternans occurred≥ 50% of times when APD alternans occurred and vice versa, both were mostly in phase. Also, alternans of APA and APD …

Stable Reference Trajectory Modification For Handling Actuator Failure In Control Systems, Ifeolu Olalekan Ogunleye Jan 2011

Stable Reference Trajectory Modification For Handling Actuator Failure In Control Systems, Ifeolu Olalekan Ogunleye

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The issue of rapidly reconfiguring the reference trajectory under unanticipated actuator failures in order to regain lost performance or aircraft handling qualities is explored. The failures detected in real-time are compensated for by ensuring the input to the system reflects current system conditions. This thesis will also show that only the general structure of the failed system component is needed to achieve successful failure detection and reference trajectory reconfiguration. This approach allows the nominal control structure to remain unchanged in the presence of change flight and system conditions. Acceptable system performance is recovered by detecting the actuator failures in real-time. …

Evaluation Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) For Water Transmission Pipelines, Rakesh Gopala Raju Doraiswamy Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Building Information Modeling (Bim) For Water Transmission Pipelines, Rakesh Gopala Raju Doraiswamy

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

In the construction industry, water transmission pipelines projects typically require two-dimensional drawings for transferring design data to the field. These drawings are referred as construction documents and serve as the source documents for subsequent facility management. However, two-dimensional drawings become difficult to interpret when there are too many entities involved needing information. In addition, when there are too many drawings for separate components such as plans, sections, and details, the chances of errors and omissions are more likely to happen. On the other hand, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new trend in construction industry and is being increasingly used …

On Noise-Enhanced Distributed Inference In The Presence Of Byzantines, Mukul Gagrani, Pranay Sharma, Satish Iyengar, Venkata Sriram Siddhardh Nadendla, Aditya Vempaty, Hao Chen, Pramod Varshney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

This paper considers the noise-enhanced distributed detection problem in the presence of Byzantine (malicious) nodes by suitably adding stochastic resonance (SR) noise. We consider two metrics - the minimum number of Byzantines (\alpha_{blind}) needed to blind the fusion center as a security metric and the Kullback-Leibler divergence (D_{KL}) as a detection performance metric. We show that \alpha_{blind} increases when SR noise is added at the honest nodes. When Byzantines also start adding SR noise to their observations, we see no gain in terms of \alpha_{blind}. However, the detection performance of the network does improve with SR. We also consider a …

Vibrational Analysis Of Soloflex Whole Body Vibration Platform, Zachary Croatt, Josh Robers Jan 2011

Vibrational Analysis Of Soloflex Whole Body Vibration Platform, Zachary Croatt, Josh Robers

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

A Soloflex Whole Body Vibration (WBV) Platform was tested for its frequency and magnitude of vibration at multiple settings on the supplied dial. An accelerometer was used to measure the vibrations on different points mapped across the platform. The motor attached to the board was also tested for its frequency using a high-speed camera. The amplitude measurements found from the accelerometer data was compared to the readings on the supplied control module to “calibrate” the platform for medical testing.

Vibrational Analysis Of An Electromechanical Toothbrush, Mark Wager Jan 2011

Vibrational Analysis Of An Electromechanical Toothbrush, Mark Wager

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The effectiveness of an electromechanical toothbrush is based entirely on its ability to remove plaque through vibrations. This paper contests that the three-dimensional motion of more inexpensive models of electromechanical toothbrushes can be accurately modeled in one-dimension so as to predict the motion of future toothbrush designs using simply the material properties, motor specifications, and grip design. Vibrational modeling, mathematical modeling, and experimentation were used in the analysis to confirm the outcome of the study and the assumptions of the model.

Evaporation Of Sessile Drops Under Combined Diffusion And Natural Convection, Peter Kelly-Zion, Christopher J. Purcell, Sawan Vaidya, Jaskirat Batra Jan 2011

Evaporation Of Sessile Drops Under Combined Diffusion And Natural Convection, Peter Kelly-Zion, Christopher J. Purcell, Sawan Vaidya, Jaskirat Batra

Engineering Faculty Research

Experiments were conducted to investigate the range of applicability of a commonly used assumption for evaporation models of sessile drops, that the transport mechanism that controls the evaporation is vapor diffusion. The evaporation rates of sessile drops of 3-methylpentane, hexane, cyclohexane, and heptane were measured. The radius of the drop contact line was constant during the measurements and drops of radius from 1 mm to 22 mm were studied. It was found that a diffusion-controlled evaporation model underpredicts the evaporation rate from 36% to 80% depending on the drop size. The increase in the evaporation rate was attributed to a …

Understanding And Improving Lithium Ion Batteries Through Mathematical Modeling And Experiments, Rutooj D. Deshpande Jan 2011

Understanding And Improving Lithium Ion Batteries Through Mathematical Modeling And Experiments, Rutooj D. Deshpande

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

There is an intense, worldwide effort to develop durable lithium ion batteries with high energy and power densities for a wide range of applications, including electric and hybrid electric vehicles. For improvement of battery technology understanding the capacity fading mechanism in batteries is of utmost importance. Novel electrode material and improved electrode designs are needed for high energy- high power batteries with less capacity fading. Furthermore, for applications such as automotive applications, precise cycle-life prediction of batteries is necessary.

One of the critical challenges in advancing lithium ion battery technologies is fracture and decrepitation of the electrodes as a result …

Investigations Of Cuinte2 / Cds & Cdte / Cds Heterojunction Solar Cells, Venkatesh Gutta Jan 2011

Investigations Of Cuinte2 / Cds & Cdte / Cds Heterojunction Solar Cells, Venkatesh Gutta

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Thin film solar cells of Copper Indium Telluride and Cadmium Sulfide junctions were fabricated on plain ITO glass slides and also on those coated with intrinsic Tin Oxide. CdS was deposited through chemical bath deposition and CIT by electrodeposition. Both compounds were subjected to annealing at temperatures between 350°C and 500°C which produced more uniform film thicknesses and larger grain sizes. The CIT/ CdS junction was characterized after performing XRD and spectral absorption of individual compounds.

Studies were also made on CdS / CdTe solar cells with respect to effect of annealing temperatures on open circuit voltages. NP acid etch, …
