Transparent Patch Antenna On A-Si Thin Film Glass Solar Module, Maria Roo Ons, S. Shynu, Max Ammann, Sarah Mccormack, Brian Norton

Articles

An optically transparent microstrip patch mounted on the surface of a commercially available solar module is proposed. The patch comprises a thin sheet of clear polyester with a conductive coating. The amorphous silicon solar cells in the module are used as both photovoltaic generator and antenna ground plane. The proposed structure provides a peak gain of 3.96 dBi in the 3.4-3.8 GHz range without significantly compromising the light transmission in the module. A comparison between copper and transparent conductors is made in terms of antenna and solar performance. The proposed technique is considerably simpler that previous integration approaches.

Lattice Thermal Conductivity Reduction In Bi2te3 Quantum Wires With Smooth And Rough Surfaces: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Bo Qiu, Lin Sun, Xiulin Ruan

Birck and NCN Publications

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have predicted the thermal conductivity of Bi2Te3 nanowires with diameters ranging from 3 to 30 nm with both smooth and rough surfaces. It is found that when the nanowire diameter decreases to the molecular scale (below 10 nm, or the so-called "quantum wire"), the thermal conductivity shows significant reduction as compared to bulk value. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity for the 30-nm-diam nanowire only shows less than 20% reduction, in agreement with recent experimental data. Also, the thermal conductivity of nanowires shows a weaker temperature dependence than the typical T-1 trend, consistent with …

Phonon-Limited And Effective Low-Field Mobility In N- And P-Type [100]-, [110]-, And [111]-Oriented Si Nanowire Transistors, Mathieu Luisier Jan 2011

Phonon-Limited And Effective Low-Field Mobility In N- And P-Type [100]-, [110]-, And [111]-Oriented Si Nanowire Transistors, Mathieu Luisier

Birck and NCN Publications

Ultrascaled n- and p-type Si nanowire field-effect transistors (NW FETs) with [100], [110], and [111] as channel orientations are simulated in the presence of electron-phonon scattering using an atomistic quantum transport solver based on the sp(3)d(5)s* tight-binding model for electrons and holes, a modified Keating model for phonons, and the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The channel resistances of devices with different gate lengths and carrier concentrations are computed at room temperature and used to extract phonon-limited, ballistic, and effective low-field mobilities. It is found that a [110] channel represents the best choice for high n- and p-type NW FET performances. …

Electron Hop Funnel Measurements And Comparison With The Lorentz-2e Simulation, Charles Lester, Jim Browning, Lael Matthews

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Electron hop funnels have been fabricated using a Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC). Measurements of the hop funnel I-V curve and electron energy distribution have been made using gated field emitters as the electron source. The charged particle simulation Lorentz 2E has been used to model the hop funnel charging and to predict the I-V and energy characteristics. The results of this comparison indicate that the simulation can be used to design hop funnel structures for use in various applications.

Short-Term Curtailment Of Hvac Loads - Executive Summary, Florida Solar Energy Center, Lixing Gu

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Rapidly increasing requirements placed on utilities to reduce peak loads has led to utility customer incentives to shift peak demand to non-peak times or reduce peak loads when notified by the utility that the grid is close to capacity. This study investigates methods used to reduce building demand during a fixed time window near a utilities on-peak period. The window was chosen to be 5-9 A.M. in winter and 2-5 P.M. in summer. The most common methods for reducing building peak demand were reviewed and categorized by their usefulness and wide-spread availability. These strategies were reductions in lighting power density, …

Investigation Of Dc Motors For Electric And Hybrid Electric Motor Vehicle Applications Using An Infinitely Variable Transmission, Benjamin Carson Groen Jan 2011

Investigation Of Dc Motors For Electric And Hybrid Electric Motor Vehicle Applications Using An Infinitely Variable Transmission, Benjamin Carson Groen

Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1900's demand for fuel efficient vehicles has motivated the development of electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Unfortunately, some components used in these vehicles are expensive and complex. AC motors, complex electronic controllers and complex battery management systems are currently used in electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles. This research examines various motors and speed control methods in an attempt to help designers identify which motors would be best suited for an EV powertrain application. The feasibility of using DC motors coupled with an Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), to obtain an innovative new electric or hybrid electric powertrain is …

An Evolved Adeno-Associated Viral Variant Enhances Gene Delivery And Gene Targeting In Neural Stem Cells, Jae-Hyung Jang, James Koerber, Jung-Suk Kim, Prashanth Asuri, Tandis Vazin, Melissa Bartel, Albert Keung, Inchan Kwan, David Schaffer

Bioengineering

Gene delivery to, and gene targeting in, stem cells would be a highly enabling technology for basic science and biomedical application. Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors have demonstrated the capacity for efficient delivery to numerous cells, but their application to stem cells has been limited by low transduction efficiency. Due to their considerable advantages, however, engineering AAV delivery systems to enhance gene delivery to stem cells may have an impact in stem cell biology and therapy. Therefore, using several diverse AAV capsid libraries—including randomly mutagenized, DNA shuffled, and random peptide insertion variants—we applied directed evolution to create a “designer” AAV vector …

Augmented Control Of A Hands-Free Electrolarynx, Brian Madden, James Condron, Eugene Coyle Jan 2011

Augmented Control Of A Hands-Free Electrolarynx, Brian Madden, James Condron, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

During voiced speech, the larynx acts as the sound source, providing a quasi-periodic excitation of the vocal tract. Following a total laryngectomy, some people speak using an electrolarynx which employs an electromechanical actuator to perform the excitatory function of the absent larynx. Drawbacks of conventional electrolarynx designs include the monotonic sound emitted, the need for a free-hand to operate the device, and the difficulty experienced by many laryngectomees in adapting to its use. One improvement to the electrolarynx, which clinicians and users frequently suggest, is the provision of a convenient hands-free control facility. This would allow more natural use of …

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory Jan 2011

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory

Dissertations

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process of decomposition and decay that takes place in the absence of oxygen and by which organic matter is broken down to its simpler chemical components. AD plants could help Ireland meet its requirements under a number of EU Directives as landfills release far more greenhouse gas emissions than other forms of waste treatment. It is estimated that 37 million tonnes per year of animal manure are stored on farms before disposal. There are also 676,000 tonnes of municipal food and garden waste produced annually. This waste could be used in AD plants to …

The Use Of Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Determine The Phase Behavior And Critical Point Of Propane Molecular Models, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley Jan 2011

The Use Of Two-Phase Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Determine The Phase Behavior And Critical Point Of Propane Molecular Models, Sonal Patel, W. Vincent Wilding, Richard L. Rowley

Faculty Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to determine two-phase configurations of model propane molecules below the critical point and in the near-critical, two-phase region. A postprocessor that uses a Monte Carlo method for determination of volumes attributable to each molecule was used to obtain density histograms of the particles from which the bulk coexisting equilibrium vapor and liquid densities were determined. This method of analyzing coexisting densities in a two-phase simulation is straightforward and can be easily implemented for complex, multisite models. Various degrees of internal flexibility in the propane models have little effect on the coexisting densities at temperatures 40 …

High Power, Low Frequency Ultrasound: Meniscal Tissue Interaction And Ablation Characteristics, Brendan O'Daly, Edmund Morris, Graham Gavin, Conor Keane, John O Byrne, Garrett Mcguinness

Articles

Abstract—This study evaluates high power low frequency ultrasound transmitted via a flat vibrating probe tip as an alternative technology for meniscal debridement in the bovine knee. An experimental force controlled testing rig was constructed using a 20 kHz ultrasonic probe suspended vertically from a load cell. Effect of variation in amplitude of distal tip displacement (242–494 mm peak-peak) settings and force (2.5–4.5 N) on tissue removal rate (TRR) and penetration rate (PR) for 52 bovine meniscus samples was analyzed. Temperature elevation in residual meniscus was measured by embedded thermocouples and histologic analysis. As amplitude or force increases, there is a …

Effect Of Strain On Stripe Phases In The Quantum Hall Regime, Sunanda P. Koduvayur, Yuli Lyanda-Geller, Sergei Khlebnikov, Gabor Csathy, Michael J. Manfra, Loren N. Pfeiffer, Kenneth W. West, Leonid P. Rokhinson

Birck and NCN Publications

Preferential orientation of the stripe phases in the quantum Hall (QH) regime has remained a puzzle since its discovery. We show experimentally and theoretically that the direction of high and low resistance of the two-dimensional (2D) hole gas in the QH regime can be controlled by an external strain. Depending on the sign of the in-plane shear strain, the Hartree-Fock energy of holes or electrons is minimized when the charge density wave (CDW) is oriented along the [110] or [1 (1) over bar0] directions. We suggest that shear strains due to internal electric fields in the growth direction are responsible …

A New Hardware Design Scheme Of Symbol Synchronization For An Underwater Acoustic Receiver, Li Ying, Bridget Benson, Ryan Kastner, Chen Lan Jan 2011

A New Hardware Design Scheme Of Symbol Synchronization For An Underwater Acoustic Receiver, Li Ying, Bridget Benson, Ryan Kastner, Chen Lan

Electrical Engineering

Conventional time domain symbol synchronizer uses static predefined threshold to evaluate the level of environment noise and extract synchronization signal, but is less feasible to apply in underwater acoustic channel because of the great delay and noise variance make the threshold definition inaccurate. The paper provides a new hardware scheme using real time orthogonal sliding correlation as adaptive threshold to build a symbol synchronizer suitable for an underwater FSK acoustic receiver. The design has been implemented and evaluated on FPGA board. Both the simulation and real data experimental results show that the design provides accurate synchronization which consumes 9% of …

Anti-Neuroblastoma Activity Of Gold Nanorods Bound With Gd2 Monoclonal Antibody Under Near-Infrared Laser Irradiation, Ching-An Peng, Chung-Hao Wang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

High-risk neuroblastoma is one of the most common deaths in pediatric oncology. Current treatment of this disease involves a coordinated sequence of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Further advances in therapy will require the targeting of tumor cells in a more selective and efficient way so that survival can be improved without substantially increasing toxicity. To achieve tumor-selective delivery, disialoganglioside (GD2) expressed by almost all neuroblastoma tumors represents a potential molecular target that can be exploited for tumor-selective delivery. In this study, GD2 monoclonal antibody (anti-GD2) was conjugated to gold nanorods (GNRs) which are one of anisotropic nanomaterials that can absorb …

A Full-Depth Amalgamated Parallel 3d Geometric Multigrid Solver For Gpu Clusters, Dana A. Jacobsen, Inanc Senocak

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Numerical computations of incompressible flow equations with pressure-based algorithms necessitate the solution of an elliptic Poisson equation, for which multigrid methods are known to be very efficient. In our previous work we presented a dual-level (MPI-CUDA) parallel implementation of the Navier-Stokes equations to simulate buoyancy-driven incompressible fluid flows on GPU clusters with simple iterative methods while focusing on the scalability of the overall solver. In the present study we describe the implementation and performance of a multigrid method to solve the pressure Poisson equation within our MPI-CUDA parallel incompressible flow solver. Various design decisions and algorithmic choices for multigrid methods …

Investigation Of The Unsteady Behavior Of A Circulation Control Wing Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Jonathon A. Lichtwardt, David D. Marshall

Aerospace Engineering

This paper details the results of an investigation into the unsteady behavior of a circulation control wing using computational fluid dynamics. Oscillations in the lift coefficient of up to 10% are observed for steady state simulations. An investigation into the source of the unsteadiness is underway, and the results to date are presented. It is shown that the periodic oscillations are independent of the above the wing mounted engine effects on the cruise efficient short take-off and landing aircraft. The oscillations are also a viscous phenomenon that does not dampen as the solution marches through steady state. It is proposed …

Improved Meshing Technique For The Engine Exhaust Of An Over-The-Wing Engine And Circulation Control Wing Configuration, John Pham, David D. Marshall Jan 2011

Improved Meshing Technique For The Engine Exhaust Of An Over-The-Wing Engine And Circulation Control Wing Configuration, John Pham, David D. Marshall

Aerospace Engineering

This paper details the results of ongoing efforts to improve upon the meshing techniques required to produce accurate RANS CFD solutions for attached and separated flows for a Circulation Control aircraft. Work, thus far, under the current NASA Research Announcement (NRA) project has revolved around an unstructured near-body volume mesh due to its robustness for complicated geometries. However, it has been found that this technique does a poor job capturing detailed flow features such as the boundary layer, shear layer, and wake of large velocity-gradient regions. Its hindrance is primarily due to the limitations of current computational resources, thus new …

A Meshless Finite Difference Scheme For Compressible Potential Flows, Alejandro Ramos, Robert A. Mcdonald Jan 2011

A Meshless Finite Difference Scheme For Compressible Potential Flows, Alejandro Ramos, Robert A. Mcdonald

Aerospace Engineering

A meshless solution algorithm for the full potential equation has been developed by applying the principles of the Taylor Least Squares (TLS) method. This method allows for a PDE to be discretized on a local cloud of scattered nodes without the need of connectivity data. The process for discretizing the full potential equation within a meshless framework is outlined along with a novel Hermite TLS technique for enforcement of Neumann boundary conditions. Several two-dimensional test cases were solved that compare well with analytical and benchmark solutions. The first test case solved for the subcritical compressible flow over a circular cylinder …

A Scientific Software Verification Library Based On The Method Of Manufactured Solutions, David D. Marshall Jan 2011

A Scientific Software Verification Library Based On The Method Of Manufactured Solutions, David D. Marshall

Aerospace Engineering

A software library, avali, is being developed in the C++ programming language that applies the Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) to a variety of partial differential equation (PDE) problems. This library will allow researchers to utilize MMS as a software verification process without developing significant amounts of testing code. The library is split into 3 components: solution classes which can be used as manufactured solutions to PDE problems; PDE problem classes which represent specific types of PDEs to be solved (such as linear convection-diffusion equation or Poisson's equation); and post-processing classes that collect the convergence information and can perform various …
