Ultrasonic Assisted Layer-By-Layer Assembly For Stable Nanocolloids Of Curcumin And Paclitaxel, Zhiguo Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

Researchers have been trying to fight cancer with synthesis of new bioactive compounds but many of these novel drugs have low solubility in water and it is difficult to deliver them into a patient's body. One way of solving this particular problem is to use nanoscale drug delivery systems. In this dissertation, we describe using an ultrasonic assisted layer-by-layer encapsulation process to prepare anti-cancer drugs with 50∼200 nm particle size with designed coating to achieve sustained release and target delivery.

Two methods for systematic manufacture of low solubility anti-cancer drug nanoparticles were proposed: I) Top-down approach to breakdown larger drug …

De Novo Gene Synthesis By Rapid Polymerase Chain Assembly Coupled With Immunoaffinity Purification: A Novel Process And Workstation, Joel R. Termaat

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The de novo synthesis of genes is emerging as a powerful tool in biotechnology. The ability to synthesize genes of any desired sequence opens the door to seemingly unlimited research possibilities. Major advances have been made recently in de novo gene synthesis, with Polymerase Chain Assembly (PCA) routinely used to construct functional sequences from short single-stranded oligonucleotides. However, current PCA techniques are lacking in speed and fidelity. Additionally, substantial undesired reactants/products are present in the final reaction. A novel process and accompanying workstation has been developed that incorporates rapid PCA synthesis coupled with subsequent affinity purification of the synthesis mixture. …

Enhancement Of Historical Printed Document Images By Combining Total Variation Regularization And Non-Local Means Filtering, Laurence Likforman-Sulem, Jérôme Darbon, Elisa H. Barney Smith Apr 2011

Enhancement Of Historical Printed Document Images By Combining Total Variation Regularization And Non-Local Means Filtering, Laurence Likforman-Sulem, Jérôme Darbon, Elisa H. Barney Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper proposes a novel method for document enhancement which combines two recent powerful noise-reduction steps. The first step is based on the total variation framework. It flattens background grey-levels and produces an intermediate image where background noise is considerably reduced. This image is used as a mask to produce an image with a cleaner background while keeping character details. The second step is applied to the cleaner image and consists of a filter based on non-local means: character edges are smoothed by searching for similar patch images in pixel neighborhoods. The document images to be enhanced are real historical …

Neural Network Prediction Of Ultimate Compression After Impact Loads In Graphite-Epoxy Coupons From Ultrasonic C-Scan Images, Nikolas L. Geiselman

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this project was to investigate how accurately an artificial neural network could predict the ultimate compressive loads of impact damaged 24-ply graphite-epoxy coupons from ultrasonic C-scan images. The 24-ply graphite-epoxy coupons were manufactured with bidirectional preimpregnated tape and cut into 21 coupons, 4 inches by 6 inches each. The coupons were impacted at known impact energies of 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 Joules in order to create barely visible impact damage (BVID). The coupons were then scanned with an ultrasonic C-scan system to create an image of the damaged area. Each coupon was then compressed …

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

There are various methods available for estimating magnitude and trends of evapotranspiration. Bowen ratio energy balance system and eddy correlation techniques offer powerful alternatives for measuring land surface evapotranspiration. In spite of the elegance, high accuracy, and theoretical attractions of these techniques for measuring evapotranspiration, their practical use over large areas can be limited due to the number of sites needed and the related expense. Application of evapotranspiration mapping from satellite measurements can overcome the limitations. The objective of this study was to utilize the METRICTM (Mapping Evapotranspiration at High Resolution using Internalized Calibration) model in Great Plains environmental …

Full Dispersion Versus Debye Model Evaluation Of Lattice Thermal Conductivity With A Landauer Approach, Changwook Jeong, Supriyo Datta, Mark S. Lundstrom

Birck and NCN Publications

Using a full dispersion description of phonons, the thermal conductivities of bulk Si and Bi(2)Te(3) are evaluated using a Landauer approach and related to the conventional approach based on the Boltzmann transport equation. A procedure to extract a well-defined average phonon mean-free-path from the measured thermal conductivity and given phonon-dispersion is presented. The extracted mean-free-path has strong physical significance and differs greatly from simple estimates. The use of simplified dispersion models for phonons is discussed, and it is shown that two different Debye temperatures must be used to treat the specific heat and thermal conductivity (analogous to the two different …

Electronic Structure, Vibrational Spectrum, And Thermal Properties Of Yttrium Nitride: A First-Principles Study, Bivas Saha, Timothy D. Sands, Umesh V. Waghmare

Birck and NCN Publications

Yttrium nitride (YN) is a promising semiconductor for use in metal/semiconductor superlattices for thermoelectric applications. We determine its electronic structure, vibrational spectrum, and thermal properties using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) based simulations with a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of the exchange correlation energy. We employ GGA+U and GW approximations in our calculations to (a) improve the accuracy of the calculation of bandgaps and (b) determine specific features of its electronic structure relevant to transport properties, such as transverse (m(t)*) and longitudinal (m(1)*) conduction band effective mass. To evaluate consequences of forming alloys of YN with other materials to its …

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing Of A Square-Cross Section Stainless Steel Propellant Tank Manufactured Using Selective Laser Sintering, Spencer Fuller

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to determine if parts manufactured using metal selective laser sintering (SLS) exhibit the same isotropic material properties as conventionally made metal parts. This was accomplished by performing a hydrostatic pressure test (HPT) of a metal SLS manufactured propellant tank, constructed for a nano-satellite of the cubesat class. Strain measurements from twelve strain gage locations on the propellant tank were recorded. A finite element analysis (FEA) model, which assumes isotropic material properties, was generated and a FEA analysis was ran at several pressure loads. The tanks strain data at the corresponding pressure loads from the …

Guidance, Navigation And Control Of A Fly-By-Wire Transport Category Airship Designed For Hover Cargo Delivery, Harshad H. Lalan

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to develop fly-by-wire pilot controls for a transport category airship propelled with six thrust vectoring engines, and to develop control laws to maintain position, heading, and attitude during hover and cargo operations. Owing to the large body area, most airships require that they be pointed into the wind to maintain their position. This research aims at controlling an airship attitude and position during hover cargo delivery, irrespective of the wind direction.

Control laws were developed for two primary modes of the airship: Flight (High Speed Mode) and Hover (Cargo Delivery Mode). Different sets of …

Hemocompatibility Of Silicon-Based Substrates For Biomedical Implant Applications, Lingyan Liu Apr 2011

Hemocompatibility Of Silicon-Based Substrates For Biomedical Implant Applications, Lingyan Liu

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Silicon membranes with highly uniform nanopore sizes fabricated using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology allow for the development of miniaturized implants such as those needed for renal replacement therapies. However, the blood compatibility of silicon has thus far been an unresolved issue in the use of these substrates in implantable biomedical devices. We report the results of hemocompatibility studies using bare silicon, polysilicon, and modified silicon substrates. The surface modifications tested have been shown to reduce protein and/or platelet adhesion, thus potentially improving biocompatibility of silicon. Hemocompatibility was evaluated under four categories—coagulation (thrombin–antithrombin complex, TAT generation), complement activation (complement protein, C3a …

Binary And Core-Shell Nanoparticle Dispersed Liquid Crystal Cells For Metamaterial Applications, George Nehmetallah, Rola Aylo, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We theoretically explored the feasibility of a tunable metamaterial using binary as well as core-shell nanoparticle dispersed liquid crystal cells in the infrared and optical regimes. Owing to the spatial variation of the permittivity of the liquid crystal host upon the application of a bias voltage, the host was decomposed into a layered medium and the effective refractive index recalculated for each layer due to the distribution of polaritonic and plasmonic nanoparticles.

The scattering, extinction, and absorption of such a nanoparticle dispersed liquid crystal cell were also found. Depending on the applied voltage bias across the liquid crystal host, the …

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Articles

Although embodiedCO2-eq analysis has seen recent developments as evident in the establishment of the ISO14040 and 14044 LCA standards, it is recognized that due to weaknesses in gathering data on product-related emissions,embodiedCO2-eq values are probabilistic. This paper presents a stochastic analysis of hybrid embodied CO2-eq in buildings to account for this weakness in traditional methods and, by way of example, applies it to an Irish construction-sector case study. Using seven apartment buildings, 70,000 results are simulated with Monte Carlo analysis and used to derive probabilistic and cumulative embodied CO2-eq intensity distributions for apartment buildings in Ireland. A Wakeby distribution with …
