Understanding Industrial Energy Use Through Lean Energy Analysis, Brian Abels, Franc Server, J. Kelly Kissock, Dawit Ayele Apr 2011

Understanding Industrial Energy Use Through Lean Energy Analysis, Brian Abels, Franc Server, J. Kelly Kissock, Dawit Ayele

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Due to rising energy costs and global climate change, many industries seek to improve their energy efficiency. This paper describes a three-step method to analyze utility billing, weather, and production data to understand a company’s energy performance over time. The method uses regression modeling of utility billing data against weather and production data. The regression models are then driven with typical weather and production data to calculate the ‘normal annual consumption’, NAC. These steps are repeated on sequential sets of 12 months of data to generate a series of ‘sliding’ NACs and regression coefficients. The method can quantify successful energy …

A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin Apr 2011

A Relaxed Fusion Of Information From Real And Synthetic Images To Predict Complex Behavior, Damian M. Lyons, D. Paul Benjamin

Faculty Publications

An important component of cognitive robotics is the ability to mentally simulate physical processes and to compare the expected results with the information reported by a robot's sensors. In previous work, we have proposed an approach that integrates a 3D game-engine simulation into the robot control architecture. A key part of that architecture is the Match-Mediated Difference (MMD) operation, an approach to fusing sensory data and synthetic predictions at the image level. The MMD operation insists that simulated and predicted scenes are similar in terms of the appearance of the objects in the scene. This is an overly restrictive constraint …

Scalar Em Beam Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, John M. Jarem, Partha P. Banerjee Apr 2011

Scalar Em Beam Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, John M. Jarem, Partha P. Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In the previous chapter, we reviewed some of the mathematical preliminaries that will be useful later on in the text. In this chapter, we discuss some of the basic concepts of scalar wave propagation, and discuss an important numerical method, called the beam propagation method (BPM), to study propagation in linear media and in media with induced nonlinearities. Furthermore, we also discuss propagation through induced gratings, both transmission and reflection type, in order to assess energy coupling between participating waves. Finally, we introduce readers to an important characterization method, called the z-scan method, which is often used to determine the …

An Integrated Circuit/Microsystem/Nano-Enhanced Four Species Radiation Sensor For Inexpensive Fissionable Material Detection, Randy Paul Waguespack Apr 2011

An Integrated Circuit/Microsystem/Nano-Enhanced Four Species Radiation Sensor For Inexpensive Fissionable Material Detection, Randy Paul Waguespack

Doctoral Dissertations

Small scale radiation detectors sensitive to alpha, beta, electromagnetic, neutron radiation are needed to combat the threat of nuclear terrorism and maintain national security. There are many types of radiation detectors on the market, and the type of detector chosen is usually determined by the type of particle to be detected. In the case of fissionable material, an ideal detector needs to detect all four types of radiation, which is not the focus of many detectors. For fissionable materials, the two main types of radiation that must be detected are gamma rays and neutrons. Our detector uses a glass or …

Embodied Emissions Abatement: A Policy Assessment Using Stochastic Analysis, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu Apr 2011

Embodied Emissions Abatement: A Policy Assessment Using Stochastic Analysis, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Articles

Policymakers traditionally focus on regulating operational energy use in buildings, ignoring other life cycle components such as embodied energy even though this may account for a significant portion of life cycle emissions. Data relating to embodied energy and emissions in buildings is limited. However, stochastic techniques can be used to estimate the distribution of such emissions from buildings. This helps policymakers identify which instruments are appropriate for achieving emissions reductions. A primary aim of this paper is to demonstrate this approach using a sample of apartment buildings in Ireland. A Monte-Carlo simulation suggests that the average probability distribution of embodied …

Retesting Of Liquefaction/Nonliquefaction Case Histories From The 1976 Tangshan Earthquake, R. E.S. Moss, R. E. Kayen, L-Y Tong, S-Y Liu, G-J Cai, J. Wu Apr 2011

Retesting Of Liquefaction/Nonliquefaction Case Histories From The 1976 Tangshan Earthquake, R. E.S. Moss, R. E. Kayen, L-Y Tong, S-Y Liu, G-J Cai, J. Wu

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A field investigation was carried out to retest liquefaction and nonliquefaction sites from the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake in China. These sites were carefully investigated in 1978/1979 using standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT) equipment, however the CPT measurements are obsolete because of the now nonstandard cone that was used at the time. In 2007 a modern cone was mobilized to retest 18 select sites that are particularly valuable because; of the intense ground shaking, high fines content, and/or the site did. Of the sites reinvestigated and carefully processed, 13 are considered accurate representative case histories. Two of …

City Of London: Vulnerability Of Infrastructure To Climate Change Final Report, Angela Peck, Elisabeth Bowering, Slobodan P. Simonovic Apr 2011

City Of London: Vulnerability Of Infrastructure To Climate Change Final Report, Angela Peck, Elisabeth Bowering, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

The Earth's climate is changing and these changes are documented to have a serious impact on municipal infrastructure. Current infrastructure is designed and constructed based on standards and codes developed decades ago. These standards and codes include historic climate and design storms which are no longer representative of the current climate. With the changes in climate patterns, infrastructure may no longer have the capacity to handle new climate loads. Thus, a region must adapt its policies and procedures to consider climate change and mitigate risks to municipal infrastructure. Climate modeling suggests that the City of London can expect to experience …

Water Resources Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Dejan Vucetic, Slobodan P. Simonovic Apr 2011

Water Resources Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Dejan Vucetic, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

Uncertainty is in part about variability in relation to the physical characteristics of water resources systems. But uncertainty is also about ambiguity (Simonovic, 2009). Both variability and ambiguity are associated with a lack of clarity because of the behaviour of all system components, a lack of data, a lack of detail, a lack of structure to consider water resources management problems, working and framing assumptions being used to consider the problems, known and unknown sources of bias, and ignorance about how much effort it is worth expending to clarify the management situation. Climate change, addressed in this research project (CFCAS, …

Manipulating Cellular Growth Responses To Patterning, Apoptotic, And Environmental Cues, James N. Mcnamara Apr 2011

Manipulating Cellular Growth Responses To Patterning, Apoptotic, And Environmental Cues, James N. Mcnamara

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, various methods of controlling cell growth are examined. Cell-cell interaction, apoptotic cues, three dimensional scaffolds, and non-adherent environments are evaluated for their ability to affect the differentiation, morphology, and growth rate of different cell types. Previous work has shown that cell growth and cell morphology can be influenced by patterns of polymers coated on surfaces in two dimensions, designated here as the x and y dimensions of a standard Cartesian coordinate system. Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies have shown limited success in modifying growth in the third, z dimension. This work considers not only the x, …
