Orthogonal Space Time Coding For Im/Dd Optical Wireless Communication With Single Carrier Frequency Domain Equalization, Nan Wu

Theses

Recently the development of optical wireless communication has received growing attention because of its unlimited bandwidth and simple implementation as compared to radio frequency communication application for indoor wireless data transmission. The objective of this thesis is to improve the performance of intensity-modulated direct- detection (IM/DD) optical wireless communications with single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) by using Orthogonal Space Time Code (OSTC). More attention has been paid to three SCFDE schemes due to their outstanding performances in practical cases. It is demonstrated that OSTC can be modified to be suitable to optical systems and provide an excellent enhancement to …

Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah Aug 2011

Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah

Theses

Heart attacks result from reduced or blocked blood flow through major coronary arteries, resulting in permanent damage to heart muscle. Coronary blood flow (CBF) is thus important to measure in experimental animal models of heart disease. A standard method to measure CBF uses tracer microspheres (Ø = 15 µm) injected into the left ventricle that flow through coronary arteries but cannot pass through capillaries and so become trapped in heart muscle. Previously, radioactive or colored microspheres have quantified the number of tracers trapped in the muscle. Fluorescent microspheres offer a more recent and more sensitive measurement mode. However, fluorescent microspheres …

Proportionate Affine Projection Sign Algorithms For Network Echo Cancellation, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two proportionate affine projection sign algorithms (APSAs) are proposed for network echo cancellation (NEC) applications where the impulse response is often real valued with sparse coefficients and long filter length. the proposed proportionate-type algorithms can achieve fast convergence and low steady-state misalignment by adopting a proportionate regularization matrix to the APSA. Benefiting from the characteristics of l1-norm optimization, affine projection, and proportionate matrix, the new algorithms are more robust to impulsive interferences and colored input than the proportionate least mean squares (PNLMS) algorithm and the robust proportionate affine projection algorithm (Robust PAPA). the new algorithms also achieve much faster convergence …

Femtosecond Laser Fabricated All-Optical Fiber Sensors With Ultrahigh Refractive Index Sensitivity: Modeling And Experiment, Lan Jiang, Longjiang Zhao, Sumei Wang, Jinpeng Yang, Hai Xiao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

All-optical fiber sensors based on ultracompact fiber inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) are fabricated by side-ablating a Ushape microcavity in a single-mode optical fiber with the fiber core partially removed using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, in which the two light paths are accordingly formed in the remaining D-type fiber core and the U-shape microcavity. Beam propagation method (BPM) analysis is utilized to illustrate the dependences of good transmission spectra on parameters including the ablation depth, ablation length and the refractive index of Ushape microcavity, which gives some guidelines to optimize parameters for fs laser micromachining and predicts RI (refractive index) sensitivities …

Left Ventricular Assist Devices: Engineering Design Considerations, Marwan A. Simaan, Eduardo Divo, George Faragallah, Yu Wang

Publications

Patients with end-stage congestive heart failure awaiting heart transplantation often wait long periods of time (300 days or more on the average) before a suitable donor heart becomes available. The medical community has placed increased emphasis on the use of Left Ventricular Assist Devices or LVADs that can substitute for, or enhance, the function of the natural heart while the patient is waiting for the heart transplant (Poirier, 1997; Frazier & Myers, 1999). Essentially, a rotary LVAD is a pump that operates continuously directing blood from the left ventricle into the aorta by avoiding the aortic valve. Generally speaking, the …

The cathodic potential difference between DA and EP was about 380 mV, while no cathodic reduction of ascorbic acid (AA) was observed because the oxidation of AA is an irreversible reaction at the sensor. As a result, DA and EP could be determined simultaneously with the interferences of high concentrations of AA being eliminated. …

Strain Effects On The Phonon Thermal Properties Of Ultra-Scaled Si Nanowires, Abhijeet Paul, Gerhard Klimeck Aug 2011

Strain Effects On The Phonon Thermal Properties Of Ultra-Scaled Si Nanowires, Abhijeet Paul, Gerhard Klimeck

Birck and NCN Publications

The impact of uniaxial and hydrostatic stress on the ballistic thermal conductance (jl) and the specific heat (Cv) of [100] and [110] Si nanowires are explored using a Modified Valence Force Field phonon model. An anisotropic behavior of jl and isotropic nature of Cv under strain are predicted for the two wire orientations. Compressive (tensile) strain decreases (increases) Cv. The Cv trend with strain is controlled by the high energy phonon sub-bands. Dominant contribution of the low/mid (low/high) energy bands in [100] ([110]) wire and their variation under strain governs thebehaviorofjl.VC 2011AmericanInstituteofPhysics.

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The Runt-related transcription factor, Runx2, is essential for osteogenesis and is controlled by both distal (P1) and proximal (P2) promoters. To understand Runx2 function requires determination of the spatiotemporal activity of P1 and P2 to Runx2 protein production. We generated a mouse model in which the P1-derived transcript was replaced with a lacZ reporter allele, resulting in loss of P1-derived protein while simultaneously allowing discrimination between the activities of the two promoters. Loss of P1-driven expression causes developmental defects with cleidocranial dysplasia-like syndromes that persist in the postnatal skeleton. P1 activity is robust in preosteogenic mesenchyme and at the onset …
