12 Bit Charge Redistribution Digital To Analog Converter For The Residence Time Fluxgate Magnetometer, Miguel Angel Alamillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The continuous advances in CMOS VLSI technology have culminated in high speed, low voltage CMOS digital circuits with gate delays below 50 ps at 1.5 V supply. At the same time, high voltage analog signal processing has fallen behind to the high flexibility and high reliability of DSP. However, the main drawback of DSP is the need for high accuracy low distortion data converters and as a consequence of the persistent efforts of reducing size, cost and power of solid-state components the field of CMOS Mixed-Signal circuit design has become of the utmost importance.
The obvious functionality of data converters …

It is well known to civil engineers that fatigue leads to the bulk of structural failures. In plain and reinforced concrete structures, fatigue might account for excessive deformation, excessive of crack widths, de-bonding of reinforcement and rupture of the reinforcement, all of these can lead to structural collapse. Fatigue crack propagation can be a method to predict a remaining life of a structures. Herein will show some works that have been done in order to analyze the fatigue crack growth for plain concrete specimen. The goals of this study are to estimate the critical crack length and remaining life of …
Novel Control Technique For Cadmium Sulfide Chemical Bath Deposition Using Real Time Monitoring Of Cadmium Ion Molarity, Rafael Ordonez
Novel Control Technique For Cadmium Sulfide Chemical Bath Deposition Using Real Time Monitoring Of Cadmium Ion Molarity, Rafael Ordonez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cadmium sulfide Chemical-Bath-Deposition parameters are modified to allow, for the first time, real time monitoring of cadmium ion molarity using a commercially available cadmium ion Ion-Selective-Electreode at 60°C. This modification involves alterations to typical deposition parameters that eliminate the formation of cadmium hydroxide and keep cadmium ion molarity above 10-7M. The new or atypical parameters developed are pH values below 8.9 and lower moralities for all chemicals. In order to have complexation of cadmium ion driven mainly by ammonia, parameters that minimized complexation by other chemicals are found. Cadmium acetate concentration below 2mM and ammonium acetate concentration below 10mM minimize …

Three dimensional collagen gels are evaluated as matrices for the study of live cells by Raman spectroscopy. The study is conducted on a human lung adenocarcinoma (A549) and a spontaneously immortalized human epithelial keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell line. It is demonstrated, using the Alamar Blue assay, that both cell models exhibit enhanced viability in collagen matrices compared to quartz substrates, commonly used for Raman spectroscopy. Using principal component analysis, it is shown that the Raman spectral analysis of cells in collagen matrices are minimally contaminated by substrate contributions and the cell to cell spectral variations are greatly reduced compared to those …

We conducted optical and electrical simulations with the goal of determining the optimal design for conjugated polymer-fullerene tandem solar cells using poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)- 4H-cyclopenta[2,1- b;3,4- b′] dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT): [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61 BM) as a bottom cell and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as a top cell. The effects of photon density, absorption, balanced and unbalanced charge carrier transport, and bimolecular recombination in the two subcells were incorporated into the simulations. We found that the maximum energy conversion efficiency (η) is 9% when charge carrier mobilities in …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Predicting the insertion loss of an opening backed with an enclosed space is important for building noise control. Recent research in sound transmission through apertures of finite depth in infinite rigid baffles has included the effects of propagating and evanescent modes within the aperture in order to extend models to higher frequencies. The present study extends the model to the case of the aperture backed by a cavity as opposed to sound radiating into half-space. The role of coupling between the aperture modes, radiation modes, and cavity modes in the transmission was investigated. The results were compared to those of …

The mechanical behavior of ultrafine grained AA5052 processed through different techniques-rolled, annealed, friction stir processed (FSP) and equal channel angular pressed (ECAP)-were compared and correlated with microstructure. the microstructure was characterized using electron back scattered diffraction to obtain the boundary spacing, the fraction of high angle boundaries and to estimate the dislocation density from local misorientations. Both FSP and ECAP conditions had ultrafine boundary spacing, but the fraction of high angle boundaries was larger for the FSP condition. Tensile deformation carried out at 297K, and 10-3s-1 showed a lower work-hardening rate and recovery rate for FSP as compared to the …

The use of friction stir processing (FSP) on marine grade aluminum sheet has been investigated with the objective of locally enhancing the material properties. This can potentially allow low-cost commercial grade aluminum to be used in superplastic forming applications or further enhance the formability to allow more complex geometries to be formed. FSP has been demonstrated to enable super plasticity (uniform elongations >250%) in 5083-H116 over a range of friction stir processing conditions. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

This paper brings together and compares data of various ultrafine grained (UFG) Al alloys processed through different routes. in general, the trend of decreasing ductility with increasing strength was observed for the UFG alloys. as compared to the coarse grained (CG) alloys, the UFG alloys show a lower ductility, a lower extent of work-hardening and a lower uniform elongation. Unlike the CG alloys, which show a large fraction of uniform to total elongation, in UFG alloys this fraction varies with processing technique. It is shown here that aging of some UFG Al alloys improves ductility. Further, it is shown that …

To understand the origin of cleavage fracture which dominates in Fe(Mn)-Al-C alloys at a high phosphorus concentration, we performed first-principles study of the phosphorus effect on ideal cleavage energy and critical stress in κ-carbide, Fe3 AlC, a precipitate in the austenitic alloys. We find that phosphorus has higher solubility in Fe3 AlC than in γ-Fe and sharply reduces the cleavage characteristics of κ-carbide. We show that strong anisotropy of the Fe-P bonds in Fe3 (Al,P) C under tensile stress, leads to the appearance of large structural voids and may facilitate crack nucleation.

Optimization Models And Algorithms For Spatial Scheduling, Christopher J. Garcia
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Spatial scheduling problems involve scheduling a set of activities or jobs that each require a certain amount of physical space in order to be carried out. In these problems space is a limited resource, and the job locations, orientations, and start times must be simultaneously determined. As a result, spatial scheduling problems are a particularly difficult class of scheduling problems. These problems are commonly encountered in diverse industries including shipbuilding, aircraft assembly, and supply chain management. Despite its importance, there is a relatively scarce amount of research in the area of spatial scheduling.
In this dissertation, spatial scheduling problems are …

In the current paper, a high-fidelity large eddy simulation solver is coupled to our modified line-by-line radiative transport equation solver to study the effects of absorption turbulence-radiation interations in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer, representative of the Orion CEV entering Earth's atmosphere, at peak heating condition. The turbulent and radiation fields represent extreme conditions typical of Orion, as the simulated boundary layer represents the region of high turbulence coupled to region of highest incident radiation. A simplification in the calculation of molecular spectra with a single temperature property database in allows for tractable calculation of spectral properties. A comparison of …

In this paper, we perform direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent boundary layers at Mach 5 with the ratio of wall-to-edge temperature T w/T ℘ from 1.0 to 5.4 (Cases M5T1 to M5T5). The influence of wall cooling on Morkovin's scaling, Walz's equation, the standard and modified strong Reynolds analogies, turbulent kinetic energy budgets, compressibility effects and near-wall coherent structures is assessed. We find that many of the scaling relations used to express adiabatic compressible boundary-layer statistics in terms of incompressible boundary layers also hold for non-adiabatic cases. Compressibility effects are enhanced by wall cooling but remain insignificant, and the …
A Higher-Order Spectro-Temporal Integration Model For Predicting Signal Audibility, Qing Yang, John G. Harris
A Higher-Order Spectro-Temporal Integration Model For Predicting Signal Audibility, Qing Yang, John G. Harris
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A higher-order model to determine audibility of audio signals is presented. Previous models have been energy based (second order) and adequate only for stationary, narrow-band signals. Music, speech and other audio signals are nonstationary and wideband so traditional energy models poorly predict the audibility of these sounds. The predictions from the higher-order model are compared to actual subjective listening tests to show that the higher order, wide-band technique outperforms previous models. ©2010 IEEE.

Design And Characterization Of An Integrate-And-Fire Neural Recording System, Sheng Feng Yen, John G. Harris
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A neuronal recording system for brain-machine interfaces (BMI) based on asynchronous biphasic pulse coding is described. A recording experiment comparing, in parallel, a commercial recording system (Tucker-Davis Technology) and the UF's custom solution (FWIRE) is set up to compare performance. The novel aspect of the UF system is that the analog signal is represented by an asynchronous pulse train, which provides a low-power, low-bandwidth, noise-resistant means for coding and transmission. Based on different front-end hardware settings, recording bandwidth and corresponding reconstruction accuracy can be varied. Taking advantage of neural firing features, the pulse-based approach requires less than 3K pulses/second to …

Current-mode control is a commonly adopted method of regulation for pulse-width modulated (PWM) dc-dc power converters in industry, but is not well understood. The advantages of current-mode control over the voltage-mode control include inherent overload and short circuit protection, faster response, line-noise rejection, and multiple converter paralleling. Current-mode controlled system consists of (1) an inner-current loop and (2) an outer-voltage loop, which sets the reference voltage to the inner loop. To ensure stable operation of the multi-loop converter, all the sequential loops in the circuit should be stable with sufficient degree of stability. The research in this dissertation is focused …
