Plasticity And Damage In Bimodal Grain Size Al-5083: Microstructural Finite Element, Steven Nelson Dec 2010

Plasticity And Damage In Bimodal Grain Size Al-5083: Microstructural Finite Element, Steven Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bimodal and nanocrystalline aluminum alloys are being investigated as stronger replacements for conventional polycrystalline aluminum alloys. Higher strengths are achieved by reducing the grain size of a metal; however, as the grain size is reduced the ductility diminishes. One solution that limits this decrease in ductility is the addition of a few microcrystalline grains into a nanocrystalline alloy, creating a bimodal microstructure that offers a better balance of strength and ductility. Two- and three-dimensional microstructural finite element (FE) simulations of monotonic and fatigue failures in Al-5083 having bimodal grain structures are conducted. To reduce the computational time and facilitate the …

This research expands previous work, refining key variable definitions, adjusting model interactions, and increasing transparency between metrics. This thesis presents the method …

Spatial Light Dilution As A Technique For Conversion Of Solar Energy To Algal Biomass, Daniel J. Dye Dec 2010

Spatial Light Dilution As A Technique For Conversion Of Solar Energy To Algal Biomass, Daniel J. Dye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A photobioreactor has been designed and developed to efficiently utilize solar irradiance through spatial dilution of sunlight. The concept of spatial light dilution is simple: incident sunlight is spread over a large surface area, thus reducing the photon flux density of the light. The implementation of this technique, however, is difficult. The reactor described within uses a new approach to spatial light dilution, utilizing recently-developed optical components to diffuse concentrated sunlight inside an algae culture. Preliminary productivity tests indicate a 2-3 fold increase in productivity per unit aperture (sunlight collection area) over a control reactor with direct-sunlight. Aperture productivity of …

Design Of An Adaptable Run-Time Reconfigurable Software-Defined Radio Processing Architecture, Joshua R. Templin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Processing power is a key technical challenge holding back the development of a high-performance software defined radio (SDR). Traditionally, SDR has utilized digital signal processors (DSPs), but increasingly complex algorithms, higher data rates, and multi-tasking needs have exceed the processing capabilities of modern DSPs. Reconfigurable computers, such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), are popular alternatives because of their performance gains over software for streaming data applications like SDR. However, FPGAs have not yet realized the ideal SDR because architectures have not fully utilized their partial reconfiguration (PR) capabilities to bring needed flexibility. A reconfigurable processor architecture is proposed that utilizes …

Complexity And Power Consumption In Stochastic Iterative Decoders, Keyur M. Payak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Stochastic iterative decoding is a novel method to decode the bits received at the end of a communication channel and to control the rate of error happening in the message bits due to noise being injected into the channel. This decoder uses stochastic computation that is based on manipulation of probabilities from a random sequence of digital bits. Hardware needed for implementing this arithmetic is very simple and can be completely implemented using simple digital complementary metal oxide gates. This helps the decoder to be technology independent, which is a major advantage over its digital and analog counterparts, which are …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Calculations of fluvial flows are strongly influenced by geometry complexity and large overall uncertainty on every single measurable property, such as velocity and shear. Moreover, a considerable portion of the data obtained from computational simulations arose from two-dimensional, steady-state models. The present work states a different approach to perform computer-based simulations and analyze fluvial flows. For the first part, the suitability of OpenFOAM to be used as the main CFD solver to analyze fluvial flows is studied. Initially, two well documented channel configurations are computationally studied using OpenFOAM. Finally, these results are compared to the output obtained from one of …

Minimizing Base Column Demands In Multi-Story Buckling Restrained Braced Frames Using Genetic Algorithms, Christopher Hiroshi Yeates

Theses and Dissertations

Most structural optimization procedures focus on minimizing the total volume of steel in an attempt to reduce overall costs. However, many other factors can have an effect on the overall cost of a structure. Base column demands in particular, can affect base plate sizes, anchorage, and foundation design. Researchers have found that present methods for estimating column demands are too conservative. Nonlinear time history analyzes were conducted on buckling-restrained braced frames of six heights. Optimized results were found considering three ductility constraints and two optimization objectives. The two optimization objectives were minimized total brace area and minimized base column demands. …

The Development And Validation Of A Finite Element Model Of A Canine Rib For Use With A Bone Remodeling Algorithm., Scott J. Sylliaasen

Master's Theses

Studies are currently being performed to determine the effects of bisphosphonate treatments on the structure and density of bone tissue. One of the pathways for gaining a better understanding of the effects of this and other treatments involves creating a computer simulation. Theory suggests that bone tissue structure and density are directly related to the manner in which the tissue is loaded. Remodeling is the process in which bone tissue is resorbed in areas of low stress distributions, and generated in areas of high stress distributions. Previous studies have utilized numerical methods and finite element methods to predict bone structure …

Control Of Longitudinal Pitch Rate As Aircraft Center Of Gravity Changes, John Andres Cadwell Jr. Dec 2010

Control Of Longitudinal Pitch Rate As Aircraft Center Of Gravity Changes, John Andres Cadwell Jr.

Master's Theses

In order for an aircraft to remain in stable flight, the center of gravity (CG) of an aircraft must be located in front of the center of lift (CL). As the center of gravity moves rearward, pitch stability decreases and the sensitivity to control input increases. This increase in sensitivity is known as pitch gain variance. Minimizing the pitch gain variance results in an aircraft with consistent handling characteristics across a broad range of center of gravity locations.

This thesis focuses on the development and testing of an open loop computer simulation model and a closed loop control system to …

To this end, previously developed models to assess flows and vascular branching were used to assess the normal and remodeled microcirculatory networks. The analysis revealed that the average individual vessel flow rates for vessels of similar caliber and total volumetric flow rates in the networks do not change for vessels of the same caliber after remodeling. Connectivity changes and average diameters primarily change in the larger arterioles after remodeling. A few correlations could be made between …

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Wastewater Treatment Pond Algae With Wastewater Sludge, Daniel Eric Heimel Dec 2010

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Wastewater Treatment Pond Algae With Wastewater Sludge, Daniel Eric Heimel

Master's Theses

Microalgae harvested from wastewater treatment ponds can be anaerobically digested to produce biogas, a renewable fuel resource. However, past experiments have shown some limitations of algae digestion. Algal cell walls are thought to be resistant to digestion, and the high protein content of algae can lead to ammonia toxicity in digesters. Co-digestion of algae with substrates containing higher C:N ratios (e.g., waste paper) can be used to maintain non-inhibitory ammonia concentrations and increase methane production. However, high carbon waste co-substrates have become costly or are not readily available in many communities. Although domestic wastewater sludge has only a marginally higher …

Pickling Behavior Of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel In Sulfuric And Hydrochloric Acid Solutions, W Homjabok, S Permpoon, G Lothongkum

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Oxide scales as well as a Cr-depleted layer, which grows between the oxide scale and base metal, are formed on AISI 304 stainless steel surface during high temperature processing. Pickling is an important process which includes mechanical and chemical operations to remove oxide scales, Cr-depleted layers, and to recover the surface passivity. The multi-step pickling is commonly used because of its higher efficiency than a single step pickling. In this study, the multi-step pickling of AISI 304 stainless steel in HCl solution was investigated instead of H2SO4 solution for the first step of pickling. HF+HNO3 mixed acid is traditionally used …

Oxidation Of Cyclohexane And Ethylbenzene By Hydrogen Peroxide Over Co-Substituted Heteropolytungstate Catalyst, W Kanjina, W Trakarnpruk Dec 2010

Oxidation Of Cyclohexane And Ethylbenzene By Hydrogen Peroxide Over Co-Substituted Heteropolytungstate Catalyst, W Kanjina, W Trakarnpruk

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The tetrabutylammonium salt of Co-substituted heteropolytungstate, [(n-C4H9)4N]4 HPW11Co(H2O)O39.3H2O was synthesized and characterized. It was shown to be an active catalyst for the oxidation of cyclohexane and ethylbenzene. The oxidation reactions were performed using green oxidant hydrogen peroxide and acetonitrile as solvent. The major products of the oxidation of cyclohexane were cyclohexanone (K) and cyclohexanol (A). High selectivity towards K-A oil was achieved. At longer time cyclohexanol was converted to cyclohexanone. Ethylbenzene was also selectively oxidized to acetophenone. These oxidation reactions appear to be radical processes since they were totally inhibited in the presence of radical scavenger.

Versatile Route For Preparation Of Polydiacetylene/Zno Nanocomposites And Their Colorimetric Response To Ph And Ethanol, N Rungruangviriya, N Traiphol

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This contribution presents a simple method to prepare polydiacetylene(PDA)/ZnO nanocomposites, which can be utilized as active materials in sensing technology. The ZnO nanoparticles, which constitute of Zn-OH2 + , Zn-OH and Zn-O- groups at their surfaces, function as nano-substrates for self-assembling of diacetylene monomers, 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (PCDA), in aqueous medium. Photopolymerization of the assemblies yields poly(PCDA)/ZnO nanocomposites with core-shell structure. Strong interactions between the active groups at ZnO surface and carboxylic head groups of poly(PCDA) promote chain ordering and reduce segmental dynamics of poly(PCDA) in the nanocomposites. The existence of strong interfacial interaction drastically affects the colorimetric response behavior of …
