Pump Operation With Vfd Controlled Motors, Charles M. Burt Feb 2010

Pump Operation With Vfd Controlled Motors, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

There are numerous reasons to consider using a VFD (variable frequency drive) controller with pumps in irrigation and drainage. These include: 1

1. Proper matching of the pump characteristics with the system. Reasonable engineers and salespersons will almost always overdesign pumps. It is very simple – if the pump is too small, there will be complaints. If, on the other hand, the pump delivers a bit more pressure than needed, there is rarely a complaint. Reasons to overdesign include:

Time-Temperature Curing Relationship Of An Adhesive Binder With Rice Straw, Kevin Ka-Wan Ng Feb 2010

Time-Temperature Curing Relationship Of An Adhesive Binder With Rice Straw, Kevin Ka-Wan Ng

Master's Theses

Rice straw is a global and proliferate agricultural waste whose production grossly outstrips viable uses. Current disposal methods are not sustainable, and more convenient methods – such as incineration – exude poor environmental stewardship. Although the direct use of straw bales in building construction presents a practical and sustainable alternative, engineering challenges associated with using it prevent its wide adoption. The Stak Block – a composite formed from compressed rice straw and a heat-cured adhesive – may overcome challenges associated with straw bale building. However, the times and temperatures needed to cure the binder with straw are not well understood. …

Runtime Constraint Checking Approaches For Ocl, A Critical Comparison, Carmen Avila, Amritam Sarcar, Yoonsik Cheon, Cesar Yeep Feb 2010

Runtime Constraint Checking Approaches For Ocl, A Critical Comparison, Carmen Avila, Amritam Sarcar, Yoonsik Cheon, Cesar Yeep

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

There are many benefits of checking design constraints at runtime---for example, automatic detection of design drift or corrosion. However, there is no comparative analysis of different approaches although such an analysis could provide a sound basis for determining the appropriateness of one approach over the others. In this paper we conduct a comparative analysis and evaluation of different constraint checking approaches possible for the Object Constraint Language (OCL). We compare several approaches including (1) direct translation to implementation languages, (2) use of executable assertion languages, and (3) use of aspect-oriented programming languages. Our comparison includes both quantitative metrics such as …

A Robust Two-Equation Model For Transient-Mixed Flows, Arturo S. León, Mohamed S. Ghidaoui, Arthur R. Schmidt, Marcelo H. García Feb 2010

A Robust Two-Equation Model For Transient-Mixed Flows, Arturo S. León, Mohamed S. Ghidaoui, Arthur R. Schmidt, Marcelo H. García

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A finite volume model was built upon earlier work with the aim of simulating free surface flows, pressurized flows and their simultaneous occurrence (mixed flows) in single-liquid and two-phase flow conditions (entrapment and release of air pockets). The model presented herein is based on a two-governing equation model. Three main contributions are presented herein, namely: (1) the ability of the proposed model to simulate mixed flows without restriction of the flow type in the free surface region (e.g., supercritical flow), (2) extension of our single-phase flow model for simulating the entrapment and release of air pockets, and (3) formulation of …

Instrumentation For Mechanistic Design Implementation, Todd Scholz Feb 2010

Instrumentation For Mechanistic Design Implementation, Todd Scholz

TREC Final Reports

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) Pavement Services Unit is in the process of implementing a new pavement design procedure being developed under the sponsorship of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Fatigue cracking is a key distress mechanism that is predicted as part of the overall process using a theoretical model calibrated to empirical data. Tensile strain at the underside of the hot-mix asphalt pavement layers induced by truck axle loads is, in turn, a key input into the fatigue cracking model. In the new design procedure tensile strain is predicted utilizing a layered elastic analysis …

2010 Spring Engr333 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun Feb 2010

2010 Spring Engr333 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun

ENGR 333

The Spring 2010 ENGR333 project assessed options for the design of a redundant data center for the Calvin campus.

I asked the students “What would it take to build a redundant data center at Calvin that is 30% more energy efficient than the existing data center?”

Note: Because I was on sabbatical in Fall 2009, ENGR333 was moved to Spring 2010.

Customer

The customer for this project was Calvin’s VP for finance Henry DeVries.

Peer Review Of Teaching Project - Castl: Expanding The Sotl Commons Cluster Final Report, Jennifer Meta Robinson, Paul Savory, Gary Poole, Tom Carey, Dan Bernstein

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Reports

In 2006, the Peer Review of Teaching Project at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was selected to join the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Institutional Leadership Program. Our participation in this national leadership program (“Expanding the Teaching Commons: A social and technical infrastructure to promote and support effective learning & student success, through teacher community collaborations to develop, adapt, share and mobilize pedagogical content knowledge, exemplary practices, and shared resources.”) allowed us to engage a broad audience to help define, develop, refine, and share the models and approaches of our project. The combined group effort for …

Large Direct Repeats Flank Genomic Rearrangements Between A New Clinical Isolate Of Francisella Tularensis Subsp. Tularensis A1 And Schu S4, Ufuk Nalbantoglu, Khalid Sayood, Michael P. Dempsey, Peter C. Iwen, Stephen C. Francesconi, Ravi D. Barabote, Gary Xie, Thomas S. Brettin, Steven H. Hinrichs, Paul D. Fey

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Francisella tularensis subspecies tularensis consists of two separate populations A1 and A2. This report describes the complete genome sequence of NE061598, an F. tularensis subspecies tularensis A1 isolated in 1998 from a human with clinical disease in Nebraska, United States of America. The genome sequence was compared to Schu S4, an F. tularensis subspecies tularensis A1a strain originally isolated in Ohio in 1941. It was determined that there were 25 nucleotide polymorphisms (22 SNPs and 3 indels) between Schu S4 and NE061598; two of these polymorphisms were in potential virulence loci. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis demonstrated that NE061598 was an …
