Stability Of Fully Nonlinear Stokes Waves On Deep Water: Part 1. Perturbation Theory, Shahrdad Sajjadi, David L. Ross Apr 2010

Stability Of Fully Nonlinear Stokes Waves On Deep Water: Part 1. Perturbation Theory, Shahrdad Sajjadi, David L. Ross

Publications

We consider a full set of harmonics for the Stokes wave in deep water in the absence of viscosity, and examine the role that higher harmonics play in modifying the classical Benjamin-Feir instability. Using a representation of the wave coefficients due to Wilton, a perturbation analysis shows that the Stokes wave may become unbounded due to interactions between the Nth harmonic of the primary wave train and a set of harmonics of a disturbance. If the frequency of the nth harmonic is denoted Ꙍn = Ꙍ(1 ± ꭉ) then instability will occur if

Processor Allocator For Chip Multiprocessors, Dawid Maksymilian Zydek

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Chip MultiProcessor (CMP) architectures consisting of many cores connected through Network-on-Chip (NoC) are becoming main computing platforms for research and computer centers, and in the future for commercial solutions. In order to effectively use CMPs, operating system is an important factor and it should support a multiuser environment in which many parallel jobs are executed simultaneously. It is done by the processor management system of the operating system, which consists of two components: Job Scheduler (JS) and Processor Allocator (PA). The JS is responsible for job scheduling that deals with selection of the next job to be executed, while the …

Estimation And Management Of Observation Time For Low Earth Orbit Satellite, Serdar Cagirdar Apr 2010

Estimation And Management Of Observation Time For Low Earth Orbit Satellite, Serdar Cagirdar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, time to observation for a generic low Earth orbit satellite after being tasked for reconnaissance of a particular surface target is investigated. A closed-form Keplerian propagation of the nominal orbit is used as the process for computing a solution to the time to observation for both scanning and staring sensors. Orbital maneuvers to reach the target sooner than the nominal trajectory are also considered. In this way time to observation is managed. Lambert's problem, which is used to determine an orbit of a satellite from two position vectors and the time of flight between them, is used …

Cyber This, Cyber That...So What?, Eric D. Trias, Bryan Bell Apr 2010

Cyber This, Cyber That...So What?, Eric D. Trias, Bryan Bell

Faculty Publications

This article endorses the idea that cyber operations may be conducted in all war-fighting domains: air, space, cyberspace, land, and sea. In addition, despite the immaturity of cyberspace operational doctrines, the doctrines from air and space remain relevant and applicable to the cyberspace domain. Cyber operations are just another set of tools in the commander's toolbox. Although cyber operations have distinct ways of achieving effects, from an Air Force perspective they are similar too the air and space operations that support air and space (and cyberspace) functions. Known and established cyber operations provide war fighters with viable options to kinetic …

Harmonic Distortion State Estimation Using An Evolutionary Strategy, Elcio F. De Arruda, Nelson Kagan, Paulo F. Ribeiro Apr 2010

Harmonic Distortion State Estimation Using An Evolutionary Strategy, Elcio F. De Arruda, Nelson Kagan, Paulo F. Ribeiro

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

This paper presents a new methodology to estimate harmonic distortions in a power system, based on measurements of a limited number of given sites. The algorithm utilizes evolutionary strategies (ES), a development branch of evolutionary algorithms. The main advantage in using such a technique relies upon its modeling facilities as well as its potential to solve fairly complex problems. The problem-solving algorithm herein proposed makes use of data from various power-quality (PQ) meters, which can either be synchronized by high technology global positioning system devices or by using information from a fundamental frequency load flow. This second approach makes the …

Combining Molecular And Imaging Biomarkers To Enhance Maldi Biomarker Analysis, Ayyappa Chowdary Vadlamudi Apr 2010

Combining Molecular And Imaging Biomarkers To Enhance Maldi Biomarker Analysis, Ayyappa Chowdary Vadlamudi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a three-step method to predict prostate cancer (PCa) regions on biopsy tissue samples based on high confident, low resolution PCa regions marked by a pathologist. First, a prediction model is designed to predict PCa regions using matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) tissue imaging data from one prostate tissue slice. Second, a texture analysis technique is applied to a high magnification optical image for the same purpose from an adjacent tissue slice. Finally, those two results are fused to obtain the PCa regions that will assist MALDI imaging biomarker analysis. Experiments show that the texture analysis based …

Managing Media Rich Geo-Spatial Annotations For A Map-Based Mobile Application Using Clustering, Khasfariyati Razikin, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Yin-Leng Theng, Thi Nhu Quynh Kim, Kalyani Chatterjea, Chew-Hung Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the prevalence of mobile devices that are equipped with wireless Internet capabilities and Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality, the creation and access of user-generated content are extended to users on the go. Such content are tied to real world objects, in the form of geospatial annotations, and it is only natural that these annotations are visualized using a map-based approach. However, viewing maps that are filled with annotations could hinder the serendipitous discovery of data, especially on the small screens of mobile devices. This calls for a need to manage the annotations. In this paper, we introduce a mobile …

Pagesense: Style-Wise Web Page Advertising, Lusong Li, Tao Mei, Xiang Niu, Chong-Wah Ngo Apr 2010

Pagesense: Style-Wise Web Page Advertising, Lusong Li, Tao Mei, Xiang Niu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents an innovative style-wise advertising platform for web page. Web page “style” mainly refers to visual effects, such as color and layout. Unlike the most popular ad-network such as Google AdSense which needs publishers to change the original structure of their pages and define the position and style of the embedded ads manually, stylewise page advertising aims to automatically deliver styleconsistent ads at proper positions within the web page, without breaking the layout of the original page. Our system is motivated from the fact that almost 90% web pages contain blank regions without any content. Given a web …

Continuous Spatial Assignment Of Moving Users, Hou U Leong, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Nikos Mamoulis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consider a set of servers and a set of users, where each server has a coverage region (i.e., an area of service) and a capacity (i.e., a maximum number of users it can serve). Our task is to assign every user to one server subject to the coverage and capacity constraints. To offer the highest quality of service, we wish to minimize the average distance between users and their assigned server. This is an instance of a well-studied problem in operations research, termed optimal assignment. Even though there exist several solutions for the static case (where user locations are fixed), …

Uncertainty In Indirect Land Use Change Emissions In The Life Cycle Of Biofuels: Implications For Legislation, Adam Liska Mar 2010

Uncertainty In Indirect Land Use Change Emissions In The Life Cycle Of Biofuels: Implications For Legislation, Adam Liska

Adam Liska Papers

Current EPA life cycle analysis (LCA) of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from corn-ethanol will be the foundation for regulations for advanced biofuels. It appears regulatory policies that include emissions from indirect land use change (and other indirect emissions) in the biofuel life cycle are moving faster than the underlying science; there is no comparable scientific study that approaches the complexity in methods currently used by the EPA. There is substantial uncertainty in quantifying direct and indirect emissions from fuels, as evidenced by conflicting results from state and federal regulators and from within the scientific community. If indirect emissions from land …

Dsfs: Decentralized Security For Large Parallel File Systems, Zhongying Niu, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang, Dongliang Lei, Anli Chen Mar 2010

Dsfs: Decentralized Security For Large Parallel File Systems, Zhongying Niu, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Dan Feng, Tianming Yang, Dongliang Lei, Anli Chen

School of Computing: Technical Reports

This paper describes DSFS, a decentralized security system for large parallel file system. DSFS stores global access control lists (ACLs) in a centralized decisionmaking server and pushes pre-authorization lists (PALs) into storage devices. Thus DSFS allows users to flexibly set any access control policy for the global ACL or even change the global ACL system without having to upgrade the security code in their storage devices. With pre-authorization lists, DSFS enables a networkattached storage device to immediately authorize I/O, instead of demanding a client to acquire an authorization from a centralized authorization server at a crucial time. The client needs …

Through early exposure to engineering, this program attempts to open the minds of children to future exciting opportunities that are accessible to them if they are appropriately prepared in mathematics and science. The program consists of a two to four hour session in which students, parents, and teachers are walked through a sequence of hands-on activities in various locations within the CEAS building. In addition to immersing the students in engaging activities, time is also invested in helping students understand who engineers are and what engineers do. This includes describing the various engineering disciplines, and their workplaces.

Using Sports Coaching Techniques To Enhance Project Based Learning Instruction, Lizabeth Schlemer, Faith Mimnaugh Mar 2010

Using Sports Coaching Techniques To Enhance Project Based Learning Instruction, Lizabeth Schlemer, Faith Mimnaugh

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

As instructors attempt to apply project based learning as a preferred pedagogy for many aspects of engineering education, countless questions are raised. For instance, how do instructors assess individual performance in a team based environment? How do instructors prepare students for the culminating presentation or report? How do instructors develop the students individually? After reviewing literature on both project based learning and exceptional coaching, we have found that much can be learned from John Wooden, Phil Jackson and other coaches. This paper will organize some of the best practices in sports coaching and draw parallels that will enhance student learning …

Spaghetti Bridges: Build, Load And Repeat, Jeffrey S. Burmeister, Kyle A. Watson Mar 2010

Spaghetti Bridges: Build, Load And Repeat, Jeffrey S. Burmeister, Kyle A. Watson

All Faculty Presentations - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The construction and subsequent loading of a bridge made out of spaghetti has proven to be an effective instructional tool in combining elements of materials science, mechanics (statics) and manufacturing. This paper reports the advantages of requiring the students to repeat their design layout with slightly different manufacturing criteria instead of just completing one design. The use of spaghetti bridges in introduction to engineering courses has been done before; however, only one bridge is typically done per student team. Requiring the students to design more than one bridge and loading each to failure has a greater impact on student learning …

Tuning Of Electrical Properties In Inaln/Gan Hfets And Ba0.5sr0.5tio3/Yig Phase Shifters, Jacob H. Leach Mar 2010

Tuning Of Electrical Properties In Inaln/Gan Hfets And Ba0.5sr0.5tio3/Yig Phase Shifters, Jacob H. Leach

Theses and Dissertations

Engineers know well from an early point in their training the trials and tribulations of having to make design tradeoffs in order to optimize one performance parameter for another. Discovering tradeoff conditions that result in the elimination of a loss associated with the enhancement of some other parameter (an improvement over a typical tradeoff), therefore, ushers in a new paradigm of design in which the constraints which are typical of the task at hand are alleviated. We call such a design paradigm “tuning” as opposed to “trading off”, and this is the central theme of this work. We investigate two …

Preliminary Results Of Combining Low Frequency Low Intensity Ultrasound And Liposomal Drug Delivery To Treat Tumors In Rats, William G. Pitt, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Beverly L. Roeder, David Dickinson, David Warden, Jonathan Hartley, Peter Jones

Faculty Publications

Ultrasound is a convenient trigger for site-specific drug delivery in cancer therapy. Nanosized liposomes formulated from soy phosphatidyl choline, cholesterol, 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[carboxy(polyethylene glycol)-2000] and alpha-tocopherol were loaded with Doxorubicin (Dox)using a pH gradient. The liposomal suspension was infused through the tail vein of BDIX rats possessing bilateral intradermal DHD/K12 tumors on their hind legs. Then 20-kHz ultrasound was applied to only one of the tumors for 15 minutes. This therapy was repeated weekly for 4 weeks. The results showed that in five of sixrats, the tumors regressed to non-measurable size within 4 weeks. A paired comparison of the normalized size of …
