Application Of Signal Advance Technology To Electrophysiology, Chris M. Hymel Aug 2010

Application Of Signal Advance Technology To Electrophysiology, Chris M. Hymel

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Medical instrumentation used in diagnosis and treatment relies on the accurate detection and processing of various physiological events and signals. While signal detection technology has improved greatly in recent years, there remain inherent delays in signal detection/ processing. These delays may have significant negative clinical consequences during various pathophysiological events. Reducing or eliminating such delays would increase the ability to provide successful early intervention in certain disorders thereby increasing the efficacy of treatment.

In recent years, a physical phenomenon referred to as Negative Group Delay (NGD), demonstrated in simple electronic circuits, has been shown to temporally advance the detection of …

Kalman Filtering With State Constraints: A Survey Of Linear And Nonlinear Algorithms, Daniel J. Simon Aug 2010

Kalman Filtering With State Constraints: A Survey Of Linear And Nonlinear Algorithms, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The Kalman filter is the minimum-variance state estimator for linear dynamic systems with Gaussian noise. Even if the noise is non-Gaussian, the Kalman filter is the best linear estimator. For nonlinear systems it is not possible, in general, to derive the optimal state estimator in closed form, but various modifications of the Kalman filter can be used to estimate the state. These modifications include the extended Kalman filter, the unscented Kalman filter, and the particle filter. Although the Kalman filter and its modifications are powerful tools for state estimation, we might have information about a system that the Kalman filter …

Investigating Pre-Breakdown Currents In Polymer Tantalum Capacitors, Githin Alapatt Aug 2010

Investigating Pre-Breakdown Currents In Polymer Tantalum Capacitors, Githin Alapatt

All Theses

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), a conducting polymer, has been used since
the 1990s for the cathode of tantalum capacitors, which have a tantalum anode, and a layer of
tantalum pentoxide as the dielectric. Such capacitors are referred to as Polymer Ta capacitors.
The first method, an in situ polymerization technique, used to deposit the polymer resulted in
capacitors with a significant leakage current and breakdown voltages near 50 V. The second
method, a pre-polymerization (pre-poly) technique, resulted in capacitors that have a much lower
leakage current and a higher breakdown voltage than the in situ capacitors.
In this thesis, an accurate measurement …

Parametric Instabilities For Vibratory Energy Harvesting Under Harmonic, Time-Varying Frequency, And Random Excitations, Christopher Stabler Aug 2010

Parametric Instabilities For Vibratory Energy Harvesting Under Harmonic, Time-Varying Frequency, And Random Excitations, Christopher Stabler

All Theses

This effort investigates and evaluates the prospect of using parametric instabilities for vibratory energy harvesting. To that end, we consider a parametrically-excited piezoelectric cantilever beam and study its performance as an energy harvester under i) fixed-frequency harmonic excitations, ii) time-varying frequency excitations, and iii) band-limited Gaussian noise. In the case of fixed-frequency excitations, we use the Method of Multiple Scales to obtain approximate analytical expressions for the steady-state response amplitude and instantaneous output power in the vicinity of the first principle parametric resonance. We show that the electromechanical coupling and load resistance play an important role in determining the output …

Electromechanical Modeling And Analysis Of A Self-Excited Micro-Power Generator, Amin Bibo Aug 2010

Electromechanical Modeling And Analysis Of A Self-Excited Micro-Power Generator, Amin Bibo

All Theses

Micro-power generators (MPGs) are compact, scalable, and low-maintenance energy harvesting devices that capture and transform wasted ambient energy into electricity.
Such devices, which are currently being researched as a possible replacement for batteries, can act as a power source to maintain and allow autonomous operations of
remote low-power consumption sensors. This thesis introduces a novel MPG which transforms wind energy into electricity via wind-induced self-excited oscillations
of piezoelectric cantilever beams. The operation concept of the device is simple: similar to music-playing harmonica that create tones via oscillations of reeds when
subjected to air blow, the proposed device uses flow-induced self-excited …

Fuzzy Logic Approach To Stability Control, Jeffery Anderson Aug 2010

Fuzzy Logic Approach To Stability Control, Jeffery Anderson

All Theses

Traditional Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for automobiles is usually accomplished through the use of estimated vehicle dynamics from simplified models. Starting with the conventional two degree-of-freedom vehicle model, one can estimate the vehicle states from the driver steering input. From this estimate, vehicle sideslip angle can be found and this is generally used with a threshold value to initiate a control action. The input/output relationship of the model depends heavily on the accuracy of the parameters used and various means to correct model inaccuracies. Specifically, these models depend on the tire cornering stiffness which is prone to change with age …

The Effects Of Physical Factors On The Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Compounds By Activated Carbons And Activated Carbon Fibers, Hatice Kose Aug 2010

The Effects Of Physical Factors On The Adsorption Of Synthetic Organic Compounds By Activated Carbons And Activated Carbon Fibers, Hatice Kose

All Theses

Activated carbons (ACs) and activated carbon fibers (ACFs) have been extensively used for the removal of synthetic organic compounds (SOCs) that have been found to be toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic or teratogenic. Adsorption of these compounds on ACs and ACFs are controlled by both physical factors and chemical interactions, which depend on the characteristics of the adsorbent (surface area, pore size distribution (PSD), and surface chemistry), the nature of the adsorbate (molecular weight and size, functional groups, polarity, solubility), and the condition of the background solution (pH, temperature, presence of competitive solutes, ionic strength). Since there are several mechanisms that can …

Influence Of Iso-Structural Substitutions On Properties Of Ge(As,Sb)(S,Se) Glasses, Guillaume Guery

All Theses

Chalcogenide glasses possess exceptional infrared transparency, large non-linear refractive indexes and low phonon energies, making them good candidates for infrared optical applications. Previous studies in the Ge-Sb-S glass system have shown an increase in the nonlinear refractive index with an iso-structural substitution of two- coordinated selenium (Se) for sulphur (S) and variation of other physical properties with substitution of other iso-structural species such as three-coordinated arsenic (As) for antimony (Sb). The role of such iso-structural exchange on properties important to the thermo-, visco- and mechanical attributes of glasses in the Ge-As/Sb-S/Se system has not been thoroughly evaluated and form the …

In Vitro Analysis Of Auto-Loom Woven Test Patches For Hernia Repair, Bryant Mersereau Aug 2010

In Vitro Analysis Of Auto-Loom Woven Test Patches For Hernia Repair, Bryant Mersereau

All Theses

Hernias are defects in the layers of the abdominal wall that can cause discomfort or pain and lead to serious health problems if left untreated. A significant portion of the world's population is afflicted by hernia formation, and the cost of treating those affected is in the billions of dollars in the US alone. The current best practices for repairing hernias involve the surgical implantation of polymeric meshes over and around the defect site. The mesh, acting as a synthetic replacement for the damaged abdominal wall layers, provides a barrier to further visceral protrusions through the defect, a support framework …

Catalysis Of Ethanol Synthesis From Syngas, Jia Gao Aug 2010

Catalysis Of Ethanol Synthesis From Syngas, Jia Gao

All Dissertations

Catalytic synthesis of ethanol and other higher alcohols from CO hydrogenation has been a subject of significant research since the 1980s. The focus of this research is to establish a better fundamental insight into heterogeneous catalysis for CO hydrogenation reactions, in an attempt to design the best catalysts for ethanol synthesis.
It has been reported widely that promoted Rh-based catalysts can exhibit high selectivity to C2+ oxygenates during CO hydrogenation. The doubly promoted Rh-La-V/SiO2 catalysts exhibited higher activity and selectivity for ethanol and other C2+ oxygenates than singly promoted catalysts. The better performance appears to be due to a synergistic …

Nonlinear Control And Estimation Techniques With Applications To Vision-Based And Biomedical Systems, Nitendra Nath Aug 2010

Nonlinear Control And Estimation Techniques With Applications To Vision-Based And Biomedical Systems, Nitendra Nath

All Dissertations

This dissertation is divided into four self-contained chapters. In Chapter 1, a new estimator using a single calibrated camera mounted on a moving platform is developed to asymptotically recover the range and the three-dimensional (3D) Euclidean position of a static object feature. The estimator also recovers the constant 3D Euclidean coordinates of the feature relative to the world frame as a byproduct. The position and orientation of the camera is assumed to be measurable unlike existing observers where velocity measurements are assumed to be known. To estimate the unknown range variable, an adaptive least squares estimation strategy is employed based …

Prediction Of Liquid Crystalline Content And Molecular Structures Present In Carbonaceous Pitches, Ward Burgess Aug 2010

Prediction Of Liquid Crystalline Content And Molecular Structures Present In Carbonaceous Pitches, Ward Burgess

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT
Previous research at Clemson has shown that multistage, packed column, supercritical extraction (also called dense-gas extraction, or DGE) of petroleum pitches is a promising technique for the production of carbonaceous precursors that can be processed into a variety of carbon products, including activated carbons and high thermal conductivity carbon fibers. As the existence (or lack thereof) of a liquid crystalline phase, or mesophase, plays a key role in establishing the suitability of a potential precursor material for a given application, we developed the SAFT-LC (liquid crystal) equation of state by combining Maier-Saupe theory for multicomponent mixtures with the SAFT …

Probing The Mechanisms Of Platelet Adhesion To Adsorbed Plasma Proteins, Balakrishnan Sivaraman Aug 2010

Probing The Mechanisms Of Platelet Adhesion To Adsorbed Plasma Proteins, Balakrishnan Sivaraman

All Dissertations

Despite over three decades of research in blood-material interactions, the biomaterials field has been unsuccessful in developing a truly non-thrombogenic biomaterial. This is due to an incomplete understanding of the factors underlying biomaterial-associated thrombosis, especially the mechanisms mediating the interactions of platelets with the adsorbed plasma protein layer(s) on the implant surface. The work presented here is motivated by the primary goal of delineating these mechanisms, and understanding the platelet receptors involved, as well as the domains/amino acid sequences they bind to in the protein molecules.
It is critical to differentiate between the amount and the conformation of the adsorbed …

Protocols For Dynamic Spectrum Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Steven Boyd Aug 2010

Protocols For Dynamic Spectrum Access In Cognitive Radio Networks, Steven Boyd

All Dissertations

Spectrum access protocols permit secondary users to transmit on frequency bands that are not being utilized by the primary owners. A cognitive radio that wishes to transmit in a band must first decide if the band is available (i.e., not being used by the owner) and then it must periodically re-evaluate the band's availability once it begins transmitting in the band to ensure that a signal from a primary owner has not emerged. To accomplish these tasks, spectrum access protocols employ periodic sensing of the channel. Frequent sensing intervals are required to ensure that cognitive radios wishing to access the …

Simulation And Mathematical Modeling To Support Community-Wide Evacuation Decisions For Multiple Population Groups, Jun Duanmu

All Dissertations

Evacuating a large population from an at-risk area has been the subject of extensive research over the past few decades. In order to measure trip completion and total evacuation times accurately, most researchers have implemented some combination of simulation and optimization methods to provide vehicular flow and congestion data. While the general at-risk population comprises the majority of travelers on the road network, there are often specific groups to consider when assessing the ability to evacuate an entire population. In particular, healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals) may require evacuation, and the trip times may become an important health issue for patients …
