Robust Analysis Of Electromagnetic Responses Of Resonant Structures Using Early-Time And Low-Frequency Data, James Frye, Jr.

All Dissertations

The rapid increase of affordable computing resources combined with the continued development and refinement of computational electromagnetic (CEM) methods has yielded a wide range of accurate and well-verified EM modeling tools; however, improvements are required to keep pace with the current and future requirements of EM systems. One such need is the development of robust, computationally-efficient methods which provide one the means to understand complex resonant systems through the by analyzing EM responses. The characteristics of resonant systems often make the determination of a wideband response with CEM methods computationally very intensive. Also, a numerical solution may not directly provide …

Development Of Advanced Finite Element Material Models For Cable Barrier Wire Rope, John D. Reid, Karla A. Lechtenberg, Cody S. Stolle

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

An improved LS-DYNA model of ¾-in. (19-mm) diameter 3x7 wire rope commonly used in roadside cable guardrail installations has been developed. A Belytschko-Schwer beam element was selected along with material *MAT_166. Numerical noise was reduced using part stiffness damping with a coefficient of 2%, and frequency range damping with a coefficient of 12%. The optimum element length based on timestep, accuracy, and computational cost was determined to be between 0.4 and 0.8 in. (10-20 mm). Dynamic component tests were conducted on wire rope to determine material properties. These tests were simulated and the results compared to the physical tests. The …

Friction Measurement In Precision Glass Molding, Peiman Mosaddegh

All Dissertations

Extensive growth of state-of-the-art technologies has created a demand for high quality lenses and has driven the industry toward an inexpensive process for manufacturing of aspheric glass lenses called Precision Glass Molding (PGM). Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been used to predict the right mold geometry. Having a realistic simulation to predict mold geometry depends on the correct model of material behavior and friction coefficient at elevated temperature.
Finding the static and dynamic coefficient of friction experimentally between two flat surfaces at elevated temperature is the subject of this research. The equipment used in this study was originally designed for …

Asynchronous Mips Processors: Educational Simulations, Robert L. Webb Aug 2010

Asynchronous Mips Processors: Educational Simulations, Robert L. Webb

Master's Theses

The system clock has been omnipresent in most mainstream chip designs. While simplifying many design problems the clock has caused the problems of clock skew, high power consumption, electromagnetic interference, and worst-case performance. In recent years, as the timing constraints of synchronous designs have been squeezed ever tighter, the efficiencies of asynchronous designs have become more attractive. By removing the clock, these issues can be mitigated. How- ever, asynchronous designs are generally more complex and difficult to debug. In this paper I discuss the advantages of asynchronous processors and the specifics of some asynchronous designs, outline the roadblocks to asynchronous …

Pre-Swing Deficits In Forward Propulsion, Swing Initiation And Power Generation By Individual Muscles In Hemiparetic Walking, Carrie L. Peterson, Allison Kinney, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Clinical studies of hemiparetic walking have shown pre-swing abnormalities in the paretic leg suggesting that paretic muscle contributions to important biomechanical walking subtasks are different than those of non-disabled individuals. Three-dimensional forward dynamics simulations of two representative hemiparetic subjects with different levels of walking function classified by self-selected walking speed (i.e., limited community=0.4–0.8 m/s and community walkers=>0.8 m/s) and a speed-matched control were generated to quantify individual muscle contributions to forward propulsion, swing initiation and power generation during the pre-swing phase (i.e., double support phase proceeding toe-off). Simulation analyses identified decreased paretic soleus and gastrocnemius contributions to forward propulsion …

Relationships Between Muscle Contributions To Walking Subtasks And Functional Walking Status In Persons With Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Allison Kinney, Carrie L. Peterson, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune Aug 2010

Relationships Between Muscle Contributions To Walking Subtasks And Functional Walking Status In Persons With Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Allison Kinney, Carrie L. Peterson, Steven A. Kautz, Richard R. Neptune

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Walking speed is commonly used to predict stroke severity and assess functional walking status (i.e., household, limited community and community walking status) post-stroke. The underlying mechanisms that limit walking speed (and functional walking status by extension) need to be understood to improve post-stroke rehabilitation. Previous experimental studies have shown correlations between paretic plantarflexor output during the pre-swing phase and walking speed and suggest that the paretic hip flexors can compensate in some hemiparetic subjects. Modeling and simulation studies of healthy walking have shown that the ankle plantarflexors, soleus (SOL) and gastrocnemius (GAS), and uniarticular hip flexors (IL) are essential contributors …

Evaluation Of Ethanol And Water Introduction Via Fumigation On Efficiency And Emissions Of A Compression Ignition Engine Using An Atomization Technique, Grant S. Janousek

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Performance of a diesel engine, equipped for ethanol and water fumigation, was studied. The method implemented allowed for non-destructive introduction of liquids in advance of the turbocharger. Engine torque, speed, emission components, diesel and ethanol fuel rates were recorded and analyzed for each mixture of inputs. Based on the results of the study, thermal efficiency was not significantly different from the baseline diesel performance when using several ethanol and water mixtures. On the other hand, ethanol fumigation caused a significant reduction in NOx emissions and an increase in HC and CO emissions. No significant changes in CO2 or O2 occurred.

Quantification Of 99mTc-Duramycin Uptake Kinetics In The Area-At-Risk After Myocardial Ischemia And Reperfusion, Joseph Capacete

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a condition in which blood supply to the heart is insufficient. MI is associated with two forms of cell death: apoptosis and necrosis. 99mTc-duramycin (99mTc-D) is a novel radiopharmaceutical that detects cell death by recognizing externalized phosphatidylethanolamine. The objective of this study was to develop a compartmental model for 99mTc-D uptake kinetics in normal and infarct myocardium, and utilize this model to compare the uptake kinetics of 99mTc-D in MI with that of another radiopharmaceutical, 99mTc-C2A-GST.

MI was induced in rats which were then injected (i.v.) with 99mTc-D. Rats …

Observer Incorporated Neoclassical Controller Design: A Discrete Perspective, Winston Alexander Baker Aug 2010

Observer Incorporated Neoclassical Controller Design: A Discrete Perspective, Winston Alexander Baker

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Control theory has generally been divided into two categories, modern control and classical control. Modern control uses state feedback to alter the pole locations of a given system. Classical control uses pre-compensation to alter the zeroes of the system and uses output feedback to adjust the poles to bring stability to the system. The drawback is that the application of classical control techniques can be a lengthy, complicated and iterative design process and in the end, classical control techniques still do not give information about the state of the system. Neoclassical control combines classical control techniques with the state feedback …

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The work presented in this thesis describes the specific steps undertaken to design and test two spool type control valves that will be part of Amsted Rail’s innovative vertical hydraulic damper system. The design challenge lies in the requirement that these spool valves must maintain a linear relation between pressure drop, flow rate, and position, during the extension and retraction cycles of the hydraulic damper. To this end, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted on spools having different land geometries in order to acquire the optimum apertures that will produce the desired performance based on simulation data provided by …

Electrorheological Fluid Effect Of Polymer Coated Carbon Nanofibers And/Or Fullerenes In Liquid Crystals, Steven S. French Aug 2010

Electrorheological Fluid Effect Of Polymer Coated Carbon Nanofibers And/Or Fullerenes In Liquid Crystals, Steven S. French

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

An ER fluid is a ‘smart’ visco-elastic material, with flow properties influenced by external electric fields, whereby its viscosity increases within the field and returns to its inherent viscosity without the field present. This unique behavior opens many possibilities for new technologies. The optimization of ER fluid performance depends on the chemical and structural compositions of the particles in suspension and the suspension itself. Recent inclusion of nano-particles within ER fluids has shown a relationship to favorable ER trends. Therefore, this research involved nano-laden ER fluid samples of fullerenes (C60) and/or polymer coated carbon nano-fibers as the dispersed phases. These …

Thermal Excitation And Piezoresistive Detection Of Cantilever In-Plane Resonance Modes For Sensing Applications, Luke A. Beardslee, Assim M. Addous, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse, Isabelle Dufour, Oliver Brand

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Thermally excited and piezoresistively detected bulk-micromachined cantilevers vibrating in their in-plane flexural resonance mode are presented. By shearing the surrounding fluid rather than exerting normal stress on it, the in-plane mode cantilevers exhibit reduced added fluid mass effects and improved quality factors in a fluid environment. In this letter, different cantilever geometries with in-plane resonance frequencies from 50 kHz to 2.2 MHz have been tested, with quality factors as high as 4200 in air and 67 in water.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce MobiTOP, a Web-based system for organizing and retrieving hierarchical location-based annotations. Each annotation contains multimedia content (such as text, images, video) associated with a location, and users are able to annotate existing annotations to an arbitrary depth, in effect creating a hierarchy. An evaluation was conducted on a group of potential users to ascertain their perceptions of the usability of the application. The results were generally positive and the majority of the participants saw MobiTOP as a useful platform to share location-based information. We conclude with implications of our work and opportunities for future research.

Distributed Route Planning And Scheduling Via Hybrid Conflict Resolution, Ramesh Thangarajoo, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we discuss the problem of route planning and scheduling by a group of agents. Each agent is responsible for designing a route plan and schedule over a geographical network, and the goal is to obtain a conflict-free plan/schedule that optimizes a global objective. We present a hybrid conflict resolution method that involves coalition formation and distributed constraint satisfaction depending on the level of coupling between agents. We show how this approach can be effectively applied to solve a distributed convoy movement planning problem.

Attractive applications are those for emergency repairs where constructability and speed of installation are critical requirements. In this paper, an experimental investigation is first presented that included laboratory testing of scaled reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with four different combinations of laminate lengths and fastener layouts to study …

Hardware Implementation Of Real-Time Operating System’S Thread Context Switch, Deepak Kumar Gauba Aug 2010

Hardware Implementation Of Real-Time Operating System’S Thread Context Switch, Deepak Kumar Gauba

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, embedded real-time applications use multi-threading. The benefits of multi-threading include greater throughput, improved responsiveness, and ease of development and maintenance. However, there are costs and pitfalls associated with multi-threading.

In some of hard real-time applications, with very precise timing requirements, multi-threading itself becomes an overhead cost mainly due to scheduling and contextswitching components of the real-time operating system (RTOS). Different scheduling algorithms have been suggested to improve the overall system performance. However, context-switching still consumes much of the processor’s time and becomes a major overhead cost especially for hard real-time embedded systems.

A typical RTOS context switch consumes 50 …

Energy Harvesting And Mission Effectiveness For Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Mark J. Cutler, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Brian Capozzi

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the feasibility of improving unmanned air vehicle (UAV) mission effectiveness by extracting energy from the atmosphere. Specifically, we consider an aerial surveillance mission in the vicinity of a geographic ridge. Cross winds owing over the ridge produce regions of lift on the windward side that can be exploited to increase mission duration. Mission effectiveness is quantified using the seeability metric. Simulation results are presented for several observation target placements. Results indicate that seeability and imaging persistence can be improved by exploiting ridge lift. Simulations demonstrated that targets at ranges less than four times the ridge height were …

Abnormal blood flow patterns promoting inflammation, cellular proliferation, and thrombosis may be established by local changes in vessel geometry after stent implantation in bifurcation lesions. Our objective was to quantify altered hemodynamics due to main vessel (MV) stenting and subsequent virtual side branch (SB) angioplasty in a coronary bifurcation by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. CFD models were generated from representative vascular dimensions and intravascular ultrasound images. Time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), and fractional flow reserve (FFR) were quantified. None of the luminal surface was exposed to low TAWSS (/cm2) in the nondiseased bifurcation model. …
