Design And Optimization Of Input Shapers For Liquid Slosh Suppression, Ameen Aboel Hassan
Design And Optimization Of Input Shapers For Liquid Slosh Suppression, Ameen Aboel Hassan
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The need for fast maneuvering and accurate positioning of flexible structures poses a control challenge. The flexibility inherent in these lightly damped systems creates large residual vibrations in response to fast disturbances. Several control approaches have been proposed to tackle this class of problems, of which the input shaping technique seems quite appealing. While input shaping has been widely investigated to attenuate residual vibrations in flexible structures, less attention was granted to expand its viability in further applications. It is therefore the aim of this work to develop a methodology for applying input shaping techniques to suppress sloshing effects in …
The Influence Of Climate On Root Depth: A Carbon Cost-Benefit Analysis, Andrew J. Guswa
The Influence Of Climate On Root Depth: A Carbon Cost-Benefit Analysis, Andrew J. Guswa
Engineering: Faculty Publications
The depth of the active root zone identifies the portion of the subsurface that exchanges soil water with the atmosphere. The depth of this zone is determined by a number of factors, and this work focuses on the drivers related to water and climate. An analytical expression for a water-optimal root depth is developed by equating the marginal carbon cost and benefit of deeper roots. Soil-moisture dynamics are driven by stochastic rainfall, and the predicted root depth is a function climate, soil, and vegetation characteristics. Consistent with results from the field, deep roots coincide with environments for which precipitation and …

Leg Sympathetic Response To Noxious Skin Stimuli Is Similar In High And Low Level Human Spinal Cord Injury, M. Kevin Garrison, Alexander V. Ng, Brian D. Schmit
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Objective
To determine if sympathetically mediated vasoconstriction in the lower extremities is injury level dependent. Although sympathetic responses have been measured in the limbs of people with high and low level SCI using blood flow measurements, including Doppler ultrasound and venous plethysmography, a direct comparison between injury levels has not been made.
Methods
Volunteers with chronic SCI were grouped according to injury level. Above T6: high level (HL, n = 7), and T6 and below: low level (LL, n = 6). All subjects had complete motor and sensory loss. Leg arterial flows were recorded by venous occlusion plethysmography, and continuous …

A Reservation-Based Extended Transaction Protocol, Wenbing Zhao, Louise E. Moser, P. Michale Melliar-Smith
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
With the advent of the new generation of Internet-based technology, in particular, web services, the automation of business activities that are distributed across multiple enterprises becomes possible. Business activities are different from traditional transactions in that they are typically asynchronous, loosely coupled, and long running. Therefore, extended transaction protocols are needed to coordinate business activities that span multiple enterprises. Existing extended transaction protocols typically rely on compensating transactions to handle exceptional conditions. In this paper, we identify a number of issues with compensation-based extended transaction protocols and describe a reservation-based extended transaction protocol that addresses those issues. Moreover, we define …
Development Of A Three Dimensional Prolapse Model To Simulate Physiological Haemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Development Of A Three Dimensional Prolapse Model To Simulate Physiological Haemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Conference Papers
Coronary stent implantation can improve blood flow in an artery that has been narrowed by the build up of arterial plaque. However, the haemodynamic effect of stent placement is unclear and may influence arterial restenosis (re-blockage). The degree of tissue prolapse between stent struts may be an important factor in predicting the restenosis rate of a stent due to the haemodynamic influence of the protruding tissue. In this paper a mathematical model has been developed to numerically predict the tissue prolapse for an artery implanted with a coronary stent. The prolapse model has been applied to the Gianturco-Roubin II (GR-II) …
Integrating Temporal Difference Methods And Self‐Organizing Neural Networks For Reinforcement Learning With Delayed Evaluative Feedback, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ning Lu, Dan Xiao
Integrating Temporal Difference Methods And Self‐Organizing Neural Networks For Reinforcement Learning With Delayed Evaluative Feedback, Ah-Hwee Tan, Ning Lu, Dan Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a neural architecture for learning category nodes encoding mappings across multimodal patterns involving sensory inputs, actions, and rewards. By integrating adaptive resonance theory (ART) and temporal difference (TD) methods, the proposed neural model, called TD fusion architecture for learning, cognition, and navigation (TD-FALCON), enables an autonomous agent to adapt and function in a dynamic environment with immediate as well as delayed evaluative feedback (reinforcement) signals. TD-FALCON learns the value functions of the state-action space estimated through on-policy and off-policy TD learning methods, specifically state-action-reward-state-action (SARSA) and Q-learning. The learned value functions are then used to determine the …
Multimodal News Story Clustering With Pairwise Visual Near-Duplicate Constraint, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann
Multimodal News Story Clustering With Pairwise Visual Near-Duplicate Constraint, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Alexander G. Hauptmann
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Story clustering is a critical step for news retrieval, topic mining, and summarization. Nonetheless, the task remains highly challenging owing to the fact that news topics exhibit clusters of varying densities, shapes, and sizes. Traditional algorithms are found to be ineffective in mining these types of clusters. This paper offers a new perspective by exploring the pairwise visual cues deriving from near-duplicate keyframes (NDK) for constraint-based clustering. We propose a constraint-driven co-clustering algorithm (CCC), which utilizes the near-duplicate constraints built on top of text, to mine topic-related stories and the outliers. With CCC, the duality between stories and their underlying …
Electromagnetic Considerations For Communicating On Correlated Mimo Channels With Covariance Information, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace
Electromagnetic Considerations For Communicating On Correlated Mimo Channels With Covariance Information, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace
Faculty Publications
Previous results for correlated block-fading MIMO channels with covariance information indicate guaranteed capacity growth with additional transmit elements and that in rapidly fading channels, vanishing element spacing maximizes capacity. However, because prior analysis neglects antenna electromagnetic coupling, the observations are not necessarily valid for small inter-element spacing. This work applies radiated power considerations to the analysis to demonstrate that additional elements do not always increase capacity and that vanishing element spacing is not optimal. An effective gain metric is introduced that quantifies the performance increase with additional transmitters in the presence of transmit correlation and mutual coupling. Performance simulations using …

The growing importance of polarimetric radiometers has led to the need for a detailed theory for Stokes antenna temperatures. In this paper, we provide a full Stokes vector formulation of an antenna temperature that accounts for the entire antenna pattern, which includes polarization mixing in the main-beam and sidelobe effects. To derive the Stokes antenna temperatures, we follow the conventional methods in the Earth remote sensing literature while relying on a coherency algebra approach from radio astronomy. Connections and parallels to the conventional approaches are noted along the way. We also introduce generalizations of beam efficiency and cross polarization for …

A Systematic Approach For Securing Our Space Assets, Heather Yates, Michael R. Grimaila
Faculty Publications
We are surrounded by the use of space assets, but for the most part are unaware of their impact on our lives. On a daily basis, space assets contribute to our well-being and others around the world. Space activities have enhanced security, monitored the environment, improved and increased information growth and flow, created economic growth, and changed the way people around the world live and work.[1] Since the 1991 Gulf War, we have also come to understand how much the US military depends on space. Military forces use satellite information for communications, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, warning, weather, navigation, and timing. …

Power dissipation has become a major obstacle in performance scaling of modern integrated circuits and has spurred the search for devices operating at lower voltage swing. In this letter, we study p-i-n band-to-band tunneling field effect transistors taking semiconducting carbon nanotubes as the channel material. The on current of these devices is mainly limited by the tunneling barrier properties, and phonon-scattering has only a moderate effect. We show, however, that the off current is limited by phonon absorption assisted tunneling, and thus is strongly temperature dependent. Subthreshold swings below the 60 mV/decade conventional limit can be readily achieved even at …

Magnetism Of Laalo3/Srtio3 Superlattices, Karolina Janicka, Julian P. Velev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
First-principles electronic structure calculations are performed to elucidate magnetic properties of LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 heterostructures. We find that TiO2-terminated interfaces are n-type conducting which is consistent with experimental observations. In a (LaAlO3 ) 3 / (SrTiO3)3 superlattice, this interface is magnetic with a magnetic moment on the Ti3+ atom of 0.2 μB, as revealed by the spin-polarized calculations within the local density approximation (LDA). For thicker SrTiO3 layers the magnetic moment decreases and eventually disappears because the electron gas spreads over more than one unit cell, making the …

Pilot Evaluation Of Energy Savings From Residential Energy Demand Feedback Devices, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Providing instantaneous feedback on household electrical demand has shown the promise to reduce energy consumption by 5-15%. This paper briefly reviews past research and describes a two year pilot evaluation of a low cost residential energy feedback system installed in twenty case study homes in Florida. Although not a statistical sample (the participants were self-selected), the study showed an average 7% reduction in energy use from feedback homes in the second year of monitoring after controlling for weather-related influences. A large identified advantage of the technology is that it provides better guidance on profitable areas to reduce household electrical demand--many …

Development Of Calcium Sulfate – Ggbs – Portland Cement Binders, Brian O'Rourke, Ciaran Mcnally, Mark G. Richardson
Publications
Binders manufactured using a blend of gypsum, ground granulated blast furnace slag and Portland cements are technically viable and possess considerable environmental and economic advantages when compared to binders manufactured using Portland cement alone. As such, the evaluation of binders made from these materials offers a promising research focus in the quest to produce technically sound, environmental and economical binders for specialist uses as an alternative to traditional concrete binders of higher carbon footprint. The aim of the test programme was to investigate the viability of a series of binders designed to fulfil particular user needs while having significantly decreased …
Knowledge-Based Information Resource Management System For Materials Of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor, Sean Hsieh
Knowledge-Based Information Resource Management System For Materials Of Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor, Sean Hsieh
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
In the development of advanced fast reactors, materials and coolant/material interactions pose a critical barrier for higher temperature and longer core life designs. For advanced burner reactors (sodium cooled) such as EBR-II and FFTF, experience has shown that the qualified structural materials and fuel cladding severely limits the economic performance. In other liquid metal cooled reactor concepts, advanced materials and better understanding and control of coolant and materials interactions are necessary for realizing the potentials.
Liquid sodium has been selected as the primary coolant candidate for Gen. IV nuclear energy systems. Global Nuclear Partnership (GNEP) Advanced Burned Reactor (ABR) has …

Multiclass Intermodal Network Model : The Use Of Combined Model On System Evaluations, Yi Deng
Dissertations
United States transportation policy has generally addressed the negative economic and social effects of the standpoint of individual transportation modes and local government involvement. Therefore, there has been an increased focus on the development of intermodal transportation. Integrating the modes and using each of them to its best advantage are strategies to optimize the existing resources and to create new capabilities.
According to the literature review performed in this research, the research in intermodal transportation system evaluation is far from mature. Most transportation performance measurements are focused on one mode rather than a whole network. In practice, the data necessary …
Design And Analysis Of Scalable Scheduling Schemes For High-Speed Input-Queued Packet Switches, Chuan-Bi Lin
Design And Analysis Of Scalable Scheduling Schemes For High-Speed Input-Queued Packet Switches, Chuan-Bi Lin
Dissertations
Single-stage input-queued (IQ) switches are attractive for implementation of high performance routers because they require no speedup in the used memory. It has been shown that IQ switches can provide 100% throughput under admissible traffic when using either maximum-weight matching schemes or iterative maximal-weight matching schemes with a significant speedup. These different approaches require either high computation complexity or high memory costs that can make them infeasible. Therefore, there is a need for low-complexity and fast matching schemes that provide high throughput under several admissible traffic patterns, without recurring to speedup nor multiple iterations. In this thesis. the concept of …

Architecture Design And Performance Analysis Of Practical Buffered-Crossbar Packet Switches, Ziqian Dong
Dissertations
Combined input crosspoint buffered (CICB) packet switches were introduced to relax inputoutput arbitration timing and provide high throughput under admissible traffic. However, the amount of memory required in the crossbar of an N x N switch is N2x k x L, where k is the crosspoint buffer size and needs to be of size RTT in cells, L is the packet size. RTT is the round-trip time which is defined by the distance between line cards and switch fabric. When the switch size is large or RTT is not negligible, the memory amount required makes the implementation …
