Application Of Design Of Experiments To Flight Test: A Case Study, Aaron A. Tucker, Gregory T. Hutto, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modern flight test tends to be a complex, expensive undertaking so any increases in efficiency would result in considerable savings. Design of experiments is a statistical methodology which enables a highly efficient investigation where only the samples needed are collected and analyzed. the application of design of experiments to the design of flight test can result in a significant increase in test efficiency. Increased information is garnered from the data collected while the number of data points required to understand the system is reduced. in this effort, an actual flight test program serves as a case study to compare and …

Other Nanotechnology Publications

In this letter, we demonstrate a gate-all-around single-wall carbon nanotube field-effect transistor. This is the first successful experimental implementation of an off-chip gate and gate-dielectric assembly with subsequent deposition on a suitable substrate. The fabrication process and device measurements are discussed in the letter. We also argue in how far charges in the gate oxide are responsible for the observed nonideal device performance.

Carbon Nanotubes For High-Performance Electronics - Progress And Prospect, Joerg Appenzeller Feb 2008

Carbon Nanotubes For High-Performance Electronics - Progress And Prospect, Joerg Appenzeller

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Carbon nanotube devices offer intrinsic advantages for high-performance logic device applications. The ultrasmall body of a carbon nanotube-the tube diameter-is the key feature that should allow aggressive channel length scaling, while the intrinsic transport properties of the nanotube ensure at the same time high on-currents. in addition, the narrowness of the tube is critical to implementation of novel device concepts like the tunneling transistor. By understanding the unique capabilities of carbon nanotubes and using them in unconventional designs, novel nanoelectronic applications may become feasible. However, much better control of materials quality must be obtained, and new fabrication processes must be …

Simulation Analysis Of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems With Diversity Reception, Sai Sravan Bharadwaj Karri

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

With the rapid increase in the utility of voice and data services, there is a demand for higher data rates and reliability in wireless communications. A wireless communication channel is prone to degrading effects such as multi-path fading, ISI etc. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a candidate for the 4^{th} generation wireless systems, mitigates these effects and supports higher data rates. The performance analysis of a complex system like OFDM,is a challenging task where analytical methods become cumbersome to be used. Simulation based approaches provide a fair estimate of the performance in such cases. In this thesis, the performance of an …

Estimating Maximum Radiated Emissions From Printed Circuit Boards With An Attached Cable, Shaowei Deng, Todd H. Hubing, Daryl G. Beetner Feb 2008

Estimating Maximum Radiated Emissions From Printed Circuit Boards With An Attached Cable, Shaowei Deng, Todd H. Hubing, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The common-mode current induced on cables attached to printed circuit boards can be a significant source of radiated emissions. Previous studies have shown that coupling from electric and magnetic field sources on circuit boards can be effectively modeled by placing equivalent voltage sources between the board and the cable. The amplitude of these equivalent sources can be estimated by using closed-form equations; however, estimates of the radiated emissions from these board-cable geometries have required full-wave simulations, and full-wave simulation results depend on the exact cable length and placement, which are not normally fixed during radiated emissions testing. This paper develops …

Extending Voltage Range And Reducing Torque Ripple Of Five-Phase Motor Drives With Added Voltage Harmonics, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine, Shuai Lu, Chris M. Hutson Feb 2008

Extending Voltage Range And Reducing Torque Ripple Of Five-Phase Motor Drives With Added Voltage Harmonics, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine, Shuai Lu, Chris M. Hutson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As multi-phase (defined as greater than three-phase) drives become more popular and practical, new research in this area investigates potential advantages including lower torque ripple and better power density. The added dimensions of a multi-phase machine leads to a completely different operating nature than standard three-phase machines. It can be shown physically and mathematically that certain harmonics do not contribute to torque production and therefore the torque is not directly tied to the current wave-shape. This paper utilizes this property to demonstrate a substantial increase in voltage range and a reduction in torque ripple through the use of added voltage …

Fault-Tolerant Optimal Neurocontrol For A Static Synchronous Series Compensator Connected To A Power Network, Wei Qiao, Ronald G. Harley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a novel fault-tolerant optimal neurocontrol scheme (FTONC) for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) connected to a multimachine benchmark power system. The dual heuristic programming technique and radial basis function neural networks are used to design a nonlinear optimal neurocontroller (NONC) for the external control of the SSSC. Compared to the conventional external linear controller, the NONC improves the damping performance of the SSSC. The internal control of the SSSC is achieved by a conventional linear controller. A sensor evaluation and (missing sensor) restoration scheme (SERS) is designed by using the autoassociative neural networks and particle swarm …

Projected Cross Point -- A New Average Current-Mode Control Approach, Kai-Tak Wan, Mehdi Ferdowsi Feb 2008

Projected Cross Point -- A New Average Current-Mode Control Approach, Kai-Tak Wan, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Projected cross point, a new current-mode control technique, is introduced and analyzed in this paper. Despite having an analog nature, the proposed method combines the advantages of both analog and digital control techniques. Unlike the conventional analog control methods, it accurately controls the average value of the inductor current with no need to a current compensator or an external ramp. In addition, while resembling the deadbeat characteristics of digital controllers, projected cross point control does not suffer from computational time delay, limit cycling, and quantization and truncation errors. Dynamic performance of the proposed approach is compared with the existing control …

The suitability of Glass Polyalkenoate Cements (GPCs) for use in orthopaedics is retarded by the presence in the glass phase of aluminum, a neurotoxin. Unfortunately, the aluminum ion plays an integral role in the setting process of GPCs and its absence is likely to hinder cement formation. However, the authors have previously shown that aluminum free GPCs may be formulated based on calcium zinc silicate glasses and these novel materials exhibit significant potential as hard tissue biomaterials. To further improve their potential and given that Strontium (Sr) based drugs have had success in the treatment of osteoporosis, the authors have …

Botsniffer: Detecting Botnet Command And Control Channels In Network Traffic, Guofei Gu, Junjie Zhang, Wenke Lee Feb 2008

Botsniffer: Detecting Botnet Command And Control Channels In Network Traffic, Guofei Gu, Junjie Zhang, Wenke Lee

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Botnets are now recognized as one of the most serious security threats. In contrast to previous malware, botnets have the characteristic of a command and control (C&C) channel. Botnets also often use existing common protocols, e.g., IRC, HTTP, and in protocol-conforming manners. This makes the detection of botnet C&C a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose an approach that uses network-based anomaly detection to identify botnet C&C channels in a local area network without any prior knowledge of signatures or C&C server addresses. This detection approach can identify both the C&C servers and infected hosts in the network. Our …

A Suite Of Robust Controllers For The Manipulation Of Microscale Objects, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani Feb 2008

A Suite Of Robust Controllers For The Manipulation Of Microscale Objects, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A suite of novel robust controllers is introduced for the pickup operation of microscale objects in a microelectromechanical system (MEMS). In MEMS, adhesive, surface tension, friction, and van der Waals forces are dominant. Moreover, these forces are typically unknown. The proposed robust controller overcomes the unknown contact dynamics and ensures its performance in the presence of actuator constraints by assuming that the upper bounds on these forces are known. On the other hand, for the robust adaptive critic-based neural network (NN) controller, the unknown dynamic forces are estimated online. It consists of an action NN for compensating the unknown system …

A New Control Method For Single-Dc-Source Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Converters Using Phase-Shift Modulation, Jingsheng Liao, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi Feb 2008

A New Control Method For Single-Dc-Source Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Converters Using Phase-Shift Modulation, Jingsheng Liao, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multilevel converters have gained popularity in high-power applications due to their low switch voltage stress and modularity. Cascaded H-bridge converters are a promising breed of multilevel converters, which generally require several independent dc sources. Using phase-shift modulation, a new control method for cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters with only one independent dc source per phase is presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional approaches, the proposed method has a wide voltage regulation range over the capacitors replacing the dc sources in the H-bridge converter cells.

Integrating Through-Wafer Interconnects With Active Devices And Circuits, Jim Jozwiak, Richard G. Southwick Iii, Vaughn N. Johnson, William B. Knowlton, Amy J. Moll

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Through wafer interconnects (TWIs) enable vertical stacking of integrated circuit chips in a single package. A complete process to fabricate TWIs has been developed and demonstrated using blank test wafers. The next step in integrating this technology into 3D microelectronic packaging is the demonstration of TWIs on wafers with preexisting microcircuitry. The circuitry must be electrically accessible from the backside of the wafer utilizing the TWIs; the electrical performance of the circuitry must be unchanged as a result of the TWI processing; and the processing must be as cost effective as possible. With these three goals in mind, several options …

A Current-Sensorless Digital Controller For Active Power Factor Correction Control Based On Kalman Filters, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein Feb 2008

A Current-Sensorless Digital Controller For Active Power Factor Correction Control Based On Kalman Filters, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

For low-power AC-DC converters, power factor correction (PFC) can be accomplished simply with certain converters operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). At higher power levels, DCM results in higher losses, so most PFC converters use current feedback to actively track the correct current waveshape. This work presents a way to provide PFC control without the current sensor, by replacing the sensor with a Kalman filter, which is essentially a stochastic observer. Experimental results verify its high power factor and low total harmonic distortion (THD).
