Encapsulation And Extended Release Of Anti-Cancer Anastrozole By Stealth Nanoparticles, Kumkum Sarkar, Hu Yang Jun 2008

Encapsulation And Extended Release Of Anti-Cancer Anastrozole By Stealth Nanoparticles, Kumkum Sarkar, Hu Yang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To improve delivery efficiency of anastrozole, we applied dendrimer-based stealth nanoparticles to encapsulate anastrozole to formulate stealth anastrozole nanoparticles. This work demonstrated that stealth nanoparticles composed of a PAMAM dendrimers core and a PEG layer could encapsulate anastrozole, hence causing improved water solubility of anastrozole. Anastrozole encapsulation depended on concentration of stealth nanoparticles and generation of dendrimer. The extended release of anastrozole was achieved. We envisioned that this highly structurally adaptable stealth nanoparticle could be further biofunctionalized to construct a targeted therapeutic delivery system for breast cancer treatment.

Artificial Immune System Based Dstatcom Control For An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device which is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, these power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which causes the degradation of the entire system performance. This paper presents the application of DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulsed loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial …

Kinabo, John Patrick Hogan, Eliot A. Atekwana, Mohamed G. Abdel Salam, Motsoptse P. Modisi

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Digital Elevation Models (DEM) extracted from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data and high-resolution aeromagnetic data are used to characterize the growth and propagation of faults associated with the early stages of continental extension in the Okavango Rift Zone (ORZ), northwest Botswana. Significant differences in the height of fault scarps and the throws across the faults in the basement indicate extended fault histories accompanied by sediment accumulation within the rift graben. Faults in the center of the rift either lack topographic expressions or are interpreted to have become inactive, or have large throws and small scarp heights indicating waning …

Contributions To Foundation Engineering In Geotechnique, Rodrigo Salgado, G. T. Houlsby, D. N. Cathie

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Many of the important developments in the field of foundation engineering have been addressed in Géotechnique papers over the past 60 years. This paper briefly reviews some of these developments and related articles, particularly with respect to shallow and deep foundations. In the early days of Géotechnique, the power to perform sophisticated numerical analyses did not exist. Papers tended to focus on the solution of problems using simple models in which soil was modelled either as linear elastic or as perfectly plastic. Engineers sought simple closed-form analytical solutions for boundary-value problems. With the development of more powerful analytical, computational …

Vehicle-Vehicle Channel Models For The 5 Ghz Band, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak Jun 2008

Vehicle-Vehicle Channel Models For The 5 Ghz Band, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we describe the results of a channel measurement and modeling campaign for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel in the 5-GHz band. We describe measurements and results for delay spread, amplitude statistics, and correlations for multiple V2V environments. We also discuss considerations used in developing statistical channel models for these environments and provide some sample results. Several statistical channel models are presented, and using simulation results, we elucidate tradeoffs between model implementation complexity and fidelity. The channel models presented should be useful for system designers in future V2V communication systems.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Mapping of corn plant population can provide useful information for making field management decisions. This research focused on using low cost infra-red sensors to count plants. The voltage output data from the sensors were processed using an algorithm developed to extract plant populations. Preliminary investigations were conducted using sensors mounted on a stationary track for laboratory testing and on a row crop tractor for field testing. Repeated measurements were taken on a manually counted corn row. Visual inspection of the data from the field test indicated the potential to identify corn stalks based on approximate physical widths of the stalks. …

Effects Of Ambient Velocity Shear On Nonlinear Internal Wave Associated Mixing At The Columbia River Plume Front, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay Jun 2008

Effects Of Ambient Velocity Shear On Nonlinear Internal Wave Associated Mixing At The Columbia River Plume Front, Jiayi Pan, David A. Jay

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) are frequently observed propagating away from Columbia River tidal plume fronts. They are generated because of the deceleration of the frontal bulge. During the River Influences on Shelf Ecosystems project cruises, the velocity, density structure and acoustic backscatter of the plume fronts and frontal NLIWs were observed using a towed vehicle, vessel-mounted instrumentation, and a vessel X band radar. These observations indicate that in the presence of strong ambient velocity shear, the NLIWs with maximum amplitudes occur well below the density interface and at a depth deeper than in the absence of shear. This deepening …

Our transportation system is a key ingredient in the economy, quality of life and urban fabric of the Portland metropolitan area. It has been stated in the past that it is not possible to manage our transportation system tomorrow unless we understand how it is performing today. In this spirit, the Portland State University Center for Transportation Studies has been working with regional and statewide partners to develop new capabilities to measure, monitor and track the performance of the transportation system in real time and using archived data sources. We believe that it is possible to leverage these disparate data …

A Survey Of Satellite Communications System Vulnerabilities, Jessica A. Steinberger Jun 2008

A Survey Of Satellite Communications System Vulnerabilities, Jessica A. Steinberger

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. military’s increasing reliance on commercial and military communications satellites to enable widely-dispersed, mobile forces to communicate makes these space assets increasingly vulnerable to attack by adversaries. Attacks on these satellites could cause military communications to become unavailable at critical moments during a conflict. This research dissected a typical satellite communications system in order to provide an understanding of the possible attacker entry points into the system, to determine the vulnerabilities associated with each of these access points, and to analyze the possible impacts of these vulnerabilities to U.S. military operations. By understanding these vulnerabilities of U.S. communications satellite …

Articular Cartilage Tensile Integrity: Modulation By Matrix Depletion Is Maturation-Dependent, Anna Asanbaeva, Johnny Tam, Barbara L. Schumacher, Stephen M. Klisch, Koichi Masuda, Robert L. Sah Jun 2008

Articular Cartilage Tensile Integrity: Modulation By Matrix Depletion Is Maturation-Dependent, Anna Asanbaeva, Johnny Tam, Barbara L. Schumacher, Stephen M. Klisch, Koichi Masuda, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

Articular cartilage function depends on the molecular composition and structure of its extracellular matrix (ECM). The collagen network (CN) provides cartilage with tensile integrity, but must also remodel during growth. Such remodeling may depend on matrix molecules interacting with the CN to modulate the tensile behavior of cartilage. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of increasingly selective matrix depletion on tensile properties of immature and mature articular cartilage, and thereby establish a framework for identifying molecules involved in CN remodeling. Depletion of immature cartilage with guanidine, chondroitinase ABC, chondroitinase AC, and Streptomyces hyaluronidase markedly increased tensile …

The Effect Of Ventilation And Hand Holes On Loss Of Compression Strength In Corrugated Boxes, Jay Singh, Eric Olsen, S. P. Singh, J. Manley, F. Wallace Jun 2008

The Effect Of Ventilation And Hand Holes On Loss Of Compression Strength In Corrugated Boxes, Jay Singh, Eric Olsen, S. P. Singh, J. Manley, F. Wallace

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Corrugated packaging is used to package approximately 90% of all products that reach retail store shelves and aisles in the United States. A large number of these corrugated shippers are used to ship fresh produce and perishables through the cold-chain environment that requires these boxes to have venting to permit air circulation. In addition, corrugated boxes for that are large in size and contain heavier products, may have hand holes to facilitate manual handling. The presence of ventilation and hand holes both cause a loss of material in two or more faces of the box. As a result the compression …

Measurement And Analysis Of Truck Transport Environment In Brazil, Giovani Otavio Rissi, Sher Paul Singh, Gary J. Burgess, Jay A. Singh

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Increasing trade in today’s global economy requires packaging to be designed to contain, protect and deliver products without damage during transportation and handling. Vibration forces that occur during transportation are one of the most significant causes of damage during shipping. The objective of this study was to quantify and analyse the vibration that occurs during truck transport in Brazil. The study was done using two types of trucks: small local trucks for local metropolitan distribution areas and larger tractor-trailers for cross-country transportation. Ten metropolitan areas in different regions of Brazil were selected for 1-day trips representing normal delivery. These trips …

Analyzing Individual Decision Making Versus Group Decision Making For Alternative Selection, Alper Gezeravci Jun 2008

Analyzing Individual Decision Making Versus Group Decision Making For Alternative Selection, Alper Gezeravci

Theses and Dissertations

Many "real world" decisions are made by groups. It is rare that the responsi- bility for a very important decision is given to a single decision maker with complete authority. Group decision making adds both advantages to the process as well as disadvantages. This research examines the question: "Are decisions made by groups really that much different from the decisions made by individuals in the group?" A specific case study involving the selection of the best primary training aircraft type for military pilot training is used to examine this question. Fifteen military pilots with various backgrounds and experience levels participate …

Theses and Dissertations

The capability to rapidly deploy tactical satellites to meet a Joint Force Commander's immediate battlespace requirements is a well-documented joint capability need. Key U.S. strategic documentation cites the need for the capability to maintain persistent surveillance or an "unblinking eye" over battlespace and to rapidly reconstitute critical space capabilities to preserve situational awareness. The warfighter requires a tactical space-based deployment capability which employs a request to launch and operational deployment window of 90 to 120 days. This master's thesis executed two (2) major areas of work: apply, and reinforce the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) mission tasks using the Joint Capabilities …

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites As Lightweight Electronic Enclosures For Satellites' Applications, Benjamin T. Harder Jun 2008

Evaluation Of Nanocomposites As Lightweight Electronic Enclosures For Satellites' Applications, Benjamin T. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

The United States military is exploring the use of nanocomposite materials for satellite structural applications. Current composite spacecraft structures are nonconductive and must have expensive shielding materials applied in order to protect the spacecraft from catastrophic damage that can be caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and/or electrostatic discharge (ESD) which are characteristics of the space environment. Conductive nanocomposites are being developed for spacecraft structures that will provide ESD and EMI shielding protection without the need for expensive secondary shielding materials. This thesis studied one such material consisting of M55J/RS-3 composite combined with nickel nanostrands™. Four different configurations were tested for …

Efficiencies And System Temperature For A Beamforming Array, Karl F. Warnick, Brian D. Jeffs Jun 2008

Efficiencies And System Temperature For A Beamforming Array, Karl F. Warnick, Brian D. Jeffs

Faculty Publications

For an active beamforming array, standard definitions for efficiencies and system temperature are not available. We use noise considerations to generalize the single-antenna conventions for aperture efficiency, spillover efficiency, radiation efficiency, and system temperature to arrays. The treatment leads to a new noise matching efficiency that quantifies the effect of mutual coupling on amplifier noise. Numerical results for a phased array feed indicate that the noise increase caused by mutual coupling can be significant.

Minimizing The Noise Penalty Due To Mutual Coupling For A Receiving Array, Karl F. Warnick, Leonid Belostotski, Peter Russer Jun 2008

Minimizing The Noise Penalty Due To Mutual Coupling For A Receiving Array, Karl F. Warnick, Leonid Belostotski, Peter Russer

Faculty Publications

For phased array receivers, mutual coupling leads to beam-dependent effective impedances at array element ports. Front end amplifiers can be matched for optimal noise performance for one beam steering direction, but noise performance becomes poor at other steering directions. We analyze this noise penalty in terms of beam equivalent noise temperature for various amplifier noise matching conditions, and develop a new matching condition that minimizes the average beam equivalent receiver noise temperature over multiple beams. For non-beamforming applications such as MIMO communications, we show that noise performance for coupled arrays can be quantified using the spectrum of an available receiver …
