A Cartilage Growth Mixture Model With Collagen Remodeling: Validation Protocols, Stephen M. Klisch, Anna Asanbaeva, Sevan R. Oungoulian, Koichi Masuda, Eugene J.-Ma. Thonar, Andrew Davol, Robert L. Sah Jun 2008

A Cartilage Growth Mixture Model With Collagen Remodeling: Validation Protocols, Stephen M. Klisch, Anna Asanbaeva, Sevan R. Oungoulian, Koichi Masuda, Eugene J.-Ma. Thonar, Andrew Davol, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

A cartilage growth mixture (CGM) model is proposed to address limitations of a model used in a previous study. New stress constitutive equations for the solid matrix are derived and collagen (COL) remodeling is incorporated into the CGM model by allowing the intrinsic COL material constants to evolve during growth. An analytical validation protocol based on experimental data from a recent in vitro growth study is developed. Available data included measurements of tissue volume, biochemical composition, and tensile modulus for bovine calf articular cartilage (AC) explants harvested at three depths and incubated for 13 days in 20% fetal borine serum …

Techniques For Developing Large Scale Fuzzy Logic Systems, Jon C. Ervin, Sema E. Alptekin Jun 2008

Techniques For Developing Large Scale Fuzzy Logic Systems, Jon C. Ervin, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

In this paper, we describe various techniques used to make Intuitionistic Fuzzy Logic Systems amenable to operating on applications with large numbers of inputs. A rule reduction technique known as Combs method is combined with an automated tuning process based on Particle Swarm Optimization. A second stage of tuning on rule weights results in improved performance and further reduction in the size of the rule-base. The entire process has been developed to operate within the Matlab software environment. The technique is tested against the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Database. The use of these tools shows great promise in significantly expanding the …

Accuracy Of Global Microirrigation Distribution Uniformity Estimates, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt, Franklin Gaudi, Sierra Layous Jun 2008

Accuracy Of Global Microirrigation Distribution Uniformity Estimates, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt, Franklin Gaudi, Sierra Layous

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Emitter pressures and flow rates were systematically and extensively sampled in one drip and one microspray field. The data distributions are presented. The accuracy of rapid (limited samples) evaluation pressure sampling procedures was found to be quite good if the pressure distribution was systematic, but erroneous if the pressure distribution throughout a field was random. A simple mathematical combination of two nonuniformity components (due to pressure differences, and other causes of flow variation) provided a better estimate of overall system distribution uniformity than more complex mathematics.

A New Pruning Algorithm For Neural Network Dimension Analysis, Devin Sabo, Xiao-Hua Yu Jun 2008

A New Pruning Algorithm For Neural Network Dimension Analysis, Devin Sabo, Xiao-Hua Yu

Electrical Engineering

The choice of network dimension is a fundamental issue in neural network applications. An optimal neural network topology not only reduces the computational complexity, but also improves its generalization capacity. In this research, a new pruning algorithm based on cross validation and sensitivity analysis is developed and compared with three existing pruning algorithms on various pattern classification problems. Computer simulation results show the network size can be significantly reduced using this new algorithm while the neural network still maintains satisfactory generalization accuracy.

Gaussian Process Metamodeling Applied To A Circulation Control Wing, Scott Turner, Tyler Ball, David D. Marshall Jun 2008

Gaussian Process Metamodeling Applied To A Circulation Control Wing, Scott Turner, Tyler Ball, David D. Marshall

Aerospace Engineering

Metamodeling fluid systems is an efficient way to do complex analysis on multivariate problems and can allow for time savings in an optimization setting. Gaussian process metamodels provide a flexibility in modeling that can be extended to both experimental and deterministic experiments. This paper specifically addresses such models applied to computational fluid dynamics analysis of a D circulation control wing. The framework for a generalized approach is first overviewed and then applied to the analysis of the aerodnamics. The Gaussian process regression was essential for both simplifying the calculations required for balanced field length computation and for analysis of complex …

Conversion To Groundwater Pumping With Drip/Micro Irrigation Systems, Charles M. Burt, Monte Soto Jun 2008

Conversion To Groundwater Pumping With Drip/Micro Irrigation Systems, Charles M. Burt, Monte Soto

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Twenty one irrigation districts in the Central Valley reported “conversion acres”. Conversion acres are those on which farmers used only groundwater for drip/micro irrigation although surface irrigation water was available.

The twenty one districts include about 2 million acres of irrigated area. Approximately 3.6% of that acreage (73,000 acres) has been “converted” to groundwater when farmers switched to drip/micro. Fourteen of these districts anticipate more conversion in the future. ITRC thinks that the conversion will be more rapid and greater than district personnel suspect.

The dominant factor that influences the conversion was the lack of flexible water delivery service to …

Magnetic Drug Targeting: Development Of A Novel Drug Delivery System For Prostate Cancer Therapy, Maham Rahimi

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been attracting a great amount of attention because of their numerous applications including contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic targeted drug carriers, and hyperthermia treatments for cancer. However, complications, including aggregation of MNPs, have limited their use in drug delivery applications. To overcome these limitations, several methods have been developed to coat magnetic particles. One method includes coating them with polymers to produce polymer/MNPs for increasing the MNP dispersion and stability. This method also increases the efficiency of loading and releasing drugs to specific locations for the treatment of various diseases including prostate cancer. …

Frequency Domain Analysis And Design Of Iterative Learning Control For Systems With Stochastic Disturbances, Douglas A. Bristow Jun 2008

Frequency Domain Analysis And Design Of Iterative Learning Control For Systems With Stochastic Disturbances, Douglas A. Bristow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work we examine the performance of iterative learning control (ILC) for systems with non-repeating disturbances and random noise. Single-input, single- output linear time-invariant systems and iteration-invariant learning filters are considered. We find that a tradeoff exists between the convergence rate and converged error spectrum. Optimal filter designs, which are dependant on the disturbance and noise spectra, are developed. We also present simple design guidelines for the case when explicit models of disturbance and noise spectra are not available. A numerical design example is presented.

Strength Of Arc-Spot Welds Made In Single And Multiple Steel Sheets, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling Jun 2008

Strength Of Arc-Spot Welds Made In Single And Multiple Steel Sheets, Gregory L. Snow, W. Samuel Easterling

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The objective of this research was to establish a relationship between arc spot weld shear strength and the arc time used to form the weld. Lap shear tests were performed on both 3/4 in. and 5/8 in. nominal diameter welds. Each weld was formed in one-, two-, or four-layers of sheet steel ranging from 22 gauge (0.028 in.) to 16 gauge (.057 in.). Three distinct time series were tested for each unique weld size, thickness of sheet steel and layer configuration. The first of these series were the full-time welds. The two remaining series, 2/3-time and 1/3-time welds, had arc …

Practical Issues Of Power Control In Ieee 802.11 Wireless Devices, Karol Kowalik, Marek Bykowski, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis Jun 2008

Practical Issues Of Power Control In Ieee 802.11 Wireless Devices, Karol Kowalik, Marek Bykowski, Brian Keegan, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Power control techniques for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have already gained much attention. Such techniques are particularly attractive because they can improve various aspects of wireless network operations such as interference mitigation, spatial reuse in dense wireless deployments, topology control, and link quality enhancement. However, until recently implementing such advanced power control using off-the-shelf wireless devices was not considered possible. For example, Abdesslem et al. [1] stated that “many novel power control solutions cannot be efficiently implemented over existing IEEE 802.11 cards”. However, in this paper we demonstrate that power control is now feasible and can be implemented in current …

Dsp-Based Pso Implementation For Online Optimization Of Power System Stabilizers, Parviz Palangpour, Pinaki Mitra, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Real-time implementations of controllers require optimization algorithms which can be performed quickly. In this paper, a digital signal processor (DSP) implementation of particle swarm optimization (PSO) is presented. PSO is used to optimize the parameters of two stabilizers used in a power system. The controllers and PSO are both implemented on a single DSP in a hardware-in-loop configuration. Results showing the performance and feasibility for real-time implementations of PSO are presented.

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots: A Lyapunov Function Based Approach, S. A. Panimadai Ramaswamy, S. N. Balakrishnan Jun 2008

Formation Control Of Car-Like Mobile Robots: A Lyapunov Function Based Approach, S. A. Panimadai Ramaswamy, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In literature leader - follower strategy has been used extensively for formation control of car-like mobile robots with the control law being derived from the kinematics. This paper takes it a step further and a nonlinear control law is derived using Lyapunov analysis for formation control of car-like mobile robots using robot dynamics. Controller is split into two parts. The first part is the development of a velocity controller for the follower from the error kinematics (linear and angular). The second part involves the use of the dynamics of the robot in the development of a torque controller for both …

Weighting Matrix Design For Robust Monotonic Convergence In Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow Jun 2008

Weighting Matrix Design For Robust Monotonic Convergence In Norm Optimal Iterative Learning Control, Douglas A. Bristow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we examine the robustness of norm optimal ILC with quadratic cost criterion for discrete-time, linear time-invariant, single-input single-output systems. A bounded multiplicative uncertainty model is used to describe the uncertain system and a sufficient condition for robust monotonic convergence is developed. We find that, for sufficiently large uncertainty, the performance weighting can not be selected arbitrarily large, and thus overall performance is limited. To maximize available performance, a time-frequency design methodology is presented to shape the weighting matrix based on the initial tracking error. The design is applied to a nanopositioning system and simulation results are presented.

Optimal Neuro-Controller Synthesis For Variable-Time Impulse Driven Systems, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan Jun 2008

Optimal Neuro-Controller Synthesis For Variable-Time Impulse Driven Systems, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper develops a systematic scheme to solve for the optimal controls of variable time impulsive systems. First, the optimality conditions for variable time impulse driven systems are derived using the calculus of variation. After wards, a neural network based adaptive critic method is proposed to numerically solve the two-point boundary value problems formulated based on the optimality conditions derived. Finally, two examples - one linear and one nonlinear - are presented to illustrate the conditions derived and to show the power of the neural network based adaptive critic method proposed.

Agarose And Methylcellulose Hydrogel Blends For Nerve Regeneration Applications, Benton C. Martin, Eric J. Minner, Sherri L. Wiseman, Rebecca L. Klank, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trauma sustained to the central nervous system is a debilitating problem for thousands of people worldwide. Neuronal regeneration within the central nervous system is hindered by several factors, making a multi-faceted approach necessary. Two factors contributing to injury are the irregular geometry of injured sites and the absence of tissue to hold potential nerve guides and drug therapies. Biocompatible hydrogels, injectable at room temperature, that rapidly solidify at physiological temperatures (37°C) are beneficial materials that could hold nerve guidance channels in place and be loaded with therapeutic agents to aid wound healing. Our studies have shown that thermo reversible methylcellulose …

Divide And Conquer Evolutionary Tsp Solution For Vehicle Path Planning, Ryan J. Meuth, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of robotic area coverage is applicable to many domains, such as search, agriculture, cleaning, and machine tooling. The robotic area coverage task is concerned with moving a vehicle with an effector, or sensor, through the task space such that the sensor passes over every point in the space. For covering complex areas, back and forth paths are inadequate. This paper presents a real-time path planning architecture consisting of layers of a clustering method to divide and conquer the problem combined with a two layered, global and local optimization method. This architecture is able to optimize the execution of …

Optimal Control Of Electrodynamic Tethers, Robert E. Stevens Jun 2008

Optimal Control Of Electrodynamic Tethers, Robert E. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

Low thrust propulsion systems such as electrodynamic tethers offer a fuel-efficient means to maneuver satellites to new orbits, however they can only perform such maneuvers when they are continuously operated for a long time. Such long-term maneuvers occur over many orbits often rendering short time scale trajectory optimization methods ineffective. An approach to multi-revolution, long time scale optimal control of an electrodynamic tether is investigated for a tethered satellite system in Low Earth Orbit with atmospheric drag. Control is assumed to be periodic over several orbits since under the assumptions of a nearly circular orbit, periodic control yields the only …

The Impact Of Heat Release In Turbine Film Cooling, Dave S. Evans Jun 2008

The Impact Of Heat Release In Turbine Film Cooling, Dave S. Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The Ultra Compact Combustor is a design that integrates a turbine vane into the combustor flow path. Because of the high fuel-to-air ratio and short combustor flow path, a significant potential exists for unburned fuel to enter the turbine. Using contemporary turbine cooling vane designs, the injection of oxygen-rich turbine cooling air into a combustor flow containing unburned fuel could result in heat release in the turbine and a large decrease in cooling effectiveness. The current study explores the interaction of cooling flow from typical cooling holes with the exhaust of a fuel-rich well-stirred-reactor operating at high temperatures over a …

Creep-Rupture And Fatigue Behavior Of A Notched Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Barth H. Boyer Jun 2008

Creep-Rupture And Fatigue Behavior Of A Notched Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Barth H. Boyer

Theses and Dissertations

The inherent resistance to oxidation of oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites makes them ideal for aerospace applications that require high temperature and long life under corrosive environments. The ceramic matrix composite (CMC) of interest in the study is the Nextel™720/Alumina (N720/A) which is comprised of an 8-harness satin weave of Nextel™ fibers embedded in an alumina matrix. One of the top applications for N720/A is in the combustion section of a turbine engine. This will require mounting and shaping the material with rivets and possibly sharp edges thereby introducing geometry based stress concentration factors. Sullivan’s research concentrated on the effects of …

Vibration Analysis Of Commercial Thermal Barrier Coatings, Lindell E. Pearson Jun 2008

Vibration Analysis Of Commercial Thermal Barrier Coatings, Lindell E. Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are currently used in turbine engine components to protect substrate material from being exposed to high temperatures and corrosion. These coatings also have the potential to reduce stress in critical engine parts which could increase the life cycle of these parts. The fact that these coatings are already qualified for use in turbine engines makes it worth investigating their damping properties. The problem with TBCs is that they are difficult to characterize as they display nonlinear properties. This research utilizes an experimental and finite element procedure to characterize these coatings. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was …

Forecasting Flying Hour Costs Of The B-1, B-2, And B-52 Bomber Aircraft, Stefanie L. Van Dyk Jun 2008

Forecasting Flying Hour Costs Of The B-1, B-2, And B-52 Bomber Aircraft, Stefanie L. Van Dyk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis both evaluates, and presents improvements to, the current method of forecasting flying costs of Air Force aircraft. It uses depot level repairable (DLR) and consumable (CONS) data for the Air Force's bomber platforms: B-1B, B-2, and B-52H. The current forecasting method assumes a proportional relationship between costs and flying hours such that 1) when no hours are flown costs are zero, and 2) a 1% increase in flying hours will increase costs by 1%. The findings of this research indicate that applying log-linear ordinary least squares regression techniques may be an improved fit of flying cost data over …

Compost For Steep Slope Erosion, Sudhir Palle, Stephen F. Higgins, Theodore Hopwood Ii Jun 2008

Compost For Steep Slope Erosion, Sudhir Palle, Stephen F. Higgins, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study was initiated to develop guidelines for maintenance erosion control measures for steep slopes. The study focused on evaluating and monitoring KY-31 fescue germination rates using two media treatments 1) 100 percent by weight compost and 2) 70 percent compost with 30 percent soil) with different seeding rates on a pilot project to establish vegetation on slopes with grades of 3:1 or steeper.

The pilot program demonstrated that weed infestation and erosion problems on slopes can be minimized by use of properly formulated compost with sufficient seed. It also showed that the seeding rate of 1 lb/1,000 ft2 slope …

Universal Scaling Characteristics Of Stress Overshoot In Startup Shear Of Entangled Polymer Solutions, Sham Ravindranath, Shi-Qing Wang Jun 2008

Universal Scaling Characteristics Of Stress Overshoot In Startup Shear Of Entangled Polymer Solutions, Sham Ravindranath, Shi-Qing Wang

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

We have carried out conventional theological measurements to explore the well-known stress overshoot behavior in startup shear of eight entangled polybutadiene solutions. In the elastic deformation regime with (gamma)over dot tau(R)> 1, we have identified universal scaling features associated with the stress maximum sigma(max) for samples of different levels of entanglements per chain ranging from 27, 40 to 64. Specifically, at the moment t(max) of the peak stress sigma(max) where the applied strain is gamma(max) = (gamma)over dott(max): (a) sigma(max) varies linearly with gamma(max), (b) sigma(max) scales with t(max) as sigma(max)similar to(t(max))-1/2. The combination of (a) and (b) yields a …

Design Of A Linear Time-Varying Cross-Coupled Iterative Learning Controller, K. L. Barton, Douglas A. Bristow, Andrew G. Alleyne Jun 2008

Design Of A Linear Time-Varying Cross-Coupled Iterative Learning Controller, K. L. Barton, Douglas A. Bristow, Andrew G. Alleyne

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In many manufacturing applications contour tracking is more important than individual axis tracking. Many control techniques, including iterative learning control (ILC), target individual axis error. Because individual axis error only indirectly relates to contour error, these approaches may not be very effective for contouring applications. Cross-coupled ILC (CCILC) is a variation on traditional ILC that targets the contour tracking directly. In contour trajectories with rapid changes, high frequency control is necessary in order to meet tracking requirements. This paper presents an improved CCILC that uses a linear time-varying (LTV) filter to provide high frequency control for short durations. The improved …

Prediction Of Fatigue Crack Growth Retardation Due To A Tensile Overload Using Two-Parameter (∆K, Kmax) Approach, Wataru Tsutsui Jun 2008

Prediction Of Fatigue Crack Growth Retardation Due To A Tensile Overload Using Two-Parameter (∆K, Kmax) Approach, Wataru Tsutsui

Masters Theses

A theoretical crack growth study on powder metallurgy aluminum alloys AA5091 and AA8022 was conducted. Specifically, the research focused on the crack growth retardation due to the application of a tensile overload. The tensile overload creates a plastic zone ahead of the propagating crack tip that induces the compressive residual stress after unloading. Such compressive residual stress pushes the crack tip faces against each other, which results in crack growth retardation.

In the study, simulation started from the calculation of the compressive residual stress. The details of the calculation steps are explained in the thesis. Eventually, the stress intensity factor …
