Monitoring The Antarctic Ice Sheet From Space, Benjamin Rule Lambert Jun 2008

Monitoring The Antarctic Ice Sheet From Space, Benjamin Rule Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

The Antarctic ice sheet is a geophysically - and in an age of growing concern about global warming, geopolitically - important portion of Earth. The composition and dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet influence global climate patterns, global sea level and the planet's radiation budget. Recent evidence also suggests that the long term stability of portions of the ice sheet may be in jeopardy. In this thesis I use data from three Ku-band space-borne scatterometers to monitor changes in the backscatter signature of the Antarctic ice sheet from 1978 through 2007. Significant changes in backscatter, which result from geophysical changes …

Quasi Index Matching For Minimum Reflectance At A Dielectric-Conductor Interface For Obliquely Incident P- And S-Polarized Light, R. M.A. Azzam, A. Alsamman Jun 2008

Quasi Index Matching For Minimum Reflectance At A Dielectric-Conductor Interface For Obliquely Incident P- And S-Polarized Light, R. M.A. Azzam, A. Alsamman

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Conditions for reducing the reflectance of a dielectric-conductor interface for p- and s-polarized light to a minimum at any angle of incidence ϕ are determined. The refractive indices of a transparent immersion medium (liquid) that achieve minimum reflectance at normal incidence, ϕ=0, and at ϕ=45° are independent of polarization. These indices provide sufficient data to determine the real and imaginary parts of the complex refractive index of an absorbing substrate. Reflection at a dielectric-Au interface at 500 nm wavelength is considered as an example. It is shown that the lowest possible reflectance is attained for p …

Material Flow Behavior In Friction Stir Welding, Brian C. Liechty Jun 2008

Material Flow Behavior In Friction Stir Welding, Brian C. Liechty

Theses and Dissertations

Material flow in friction stir welding is largely uncharacterized due to the difficulty in material flow measurement and visualization in metals. This study investigates plasticine for use as an analog for modeling material flow in friction stir welding (FSW) of metals. Qualitative comparisons between welded plasticine and metal sections exhibit many similarities. The transient temperature response of the plasticine also shows the same qualitative behavior as welds conducted in metal. To quantify its similarity to metal, the plasticine is further analyzed through compression tests to characterize its strain, strain-rate, and temperature sensitivities. A detailed analysis is presented which defines the …

Developing A Decision Model For Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (Jieddo) Proposal Selection, Lyle M. Dawley, Lenore A. Marentee, Alice Marie Long Jun 2008

Developing A Decision Model For Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (Jieddo) Proposal Selection, Lyle M. Dawley, Lenore A. Marentee, Alice Marie Long

Theses and Dissertations

This research uses decision analysis to develop a structured, repeatable and most importantly defensible decision model for the evaluation of proposed IED defeat solutions submitted to the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO). Additive value models using Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) are examined as possible methodologies. VFT is determined to be the "best fit" for JIEDDO's decision situation in which proposals are submitted continuously and must be scored independently of previous proposals. VFT is first used to determine desirable qualities in IED defeat options, and then to generate a hierarchal value model to evaluate these qualities …

Heat Transfer Due To Unsteady Effects As Investigated In A High-Speed, Full-Scale, Fully-Cooled Turbine Vane And Rotor Stage, Jonathan R. Mason Jun 2008

Heat Transfer Due To Unsteady Effects As Investigated In A High-Speed, Full-Scale, Fully-Cooled Turbine Vane And Rotor Stage, Jonathan R. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of film cooling on a gas turbine engine’s high‐pressure turbine section. The focus for this effort was in the tip/shroud region of a rotor stage and a high pressure turbine vane. A primary goal was to understand the unsteady flow effects. Attempts were also made to characterize the effects as caused by the fully‐cooled rotor stage. Data for this investigation was taken at the U.S. Air Force’s Turbine Research Facility (TRF), a transient blowdown facility with instrumentation fitted to a full‐scale, high‐speed, fully‐cooled vane and rotor stage of proprietary design. Measurements of pressure, …

Fuel Composition Analysis Of Endothermically Heated Jp-8 Fuel For Use In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Eric A. Nagley Jun 2008

Fuel Composition Analysis Of Endothermically Heated Jp-8 Fuel For Use In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Eric A. Nagley

Theses and Dissertations

Waste heat from a pulse detonation engine (PDE) was extracted via zeolite catalyst coated concentric tube-counter flow heat exchangers to produce supercritical pyrolytic conditions for JP-8 fuel. A sampling system and method were developed that enabled samples of reacted fuel to be extracted during steady state operation. Samples were taken over a range of heat exchanger exit temperatures from 820 K (1016° F) to 940 K (1232° F). Offline analysis of liquid and vapor fuel samples indicated fuel decomposition via typical pyrolytic reaction pathways. The liquid analysis showed conversion of parent fuel components with formation of unsaturates (aromatics and alkenes) …

A Grounded Agent Model Of The Consumer Technology Adoption Process, Brent Alan Zenobia Jun 2008

A Grounded Agent Model Of The Consumer Technology Adoption Process, Brent Alan Zenobia

Dissertations and Theses

Adoption is one of the most important concepts in the diffusion of innovations (DOI) literature, yet certain aspects of it are poorly understood. In particular, causal adoption process theory (CAPT) has been stagnant for decades and seldom subjected to critical scrutiny. In consequence, DOI research is unstable – different studies identify different factors as important.

This dissertation introduces grounded agent modeling, a hybrid methodology drawing on existing software engineering and social science techniques to construct a step-by-step explanation of how consumers make technology adoption decisions. Inductive case studies, grounded theory, and sequence analysis are used to investigate transportation mode adoption …

Trade-Off Between Sample Size And Accuracy: Case Of Measurements Under Interval Uncertainty, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson Jun 2008

Trade-Off Between Sample Size And Accuracy: Case Of Measurements Under Interval Uncertainty, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we are not satisfied with the accuracy of the existing measurements. There are two possible ways to improve the measurement accuracy:

first, instead of a single measurement, we can make repeated measurements; the additional information coming from these additional measurements can improve the accuracy of the result of this series of measurements;

second, we can replace the current measuring instrument with a more accurate one; correspondingly, we can use a more accurate (and more expensive) measurement procedure provided by a measuring lab -- e.g., a procedure that includes the use of a higher quality reagent.
